The DC Extended Universe is dead; long live the DC Universe. What has felt like a months-long inevitability has finally turned into reality with the release of "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom," which technically functions as the last chapter of the superhero saga that began a little over 10 years ago with Zack Snyder's "Man of Steel." What comes next will be the beginning of a much different approach, shepherded by DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran. But compared to the slate of high-profile projects that Warner Bros. confidently announced back in 2014, it's obvious that things didn't quite go according to plan -- and if ever there were a fitting eulogy for a franchise with plenty of unexpected highs and lows, well, that would be it.
To state the obvious, it was never the studio's intention to bring things to a conclusion with an "Aquaman" sequel, of all things.

In yet another disturbing incident of an audience member disrupting a public event, a man walked onto the stage at a Forbes panel featuring Machine Gun Kelly, startling the rapper-entrepreneur who quickly rose to his feet and said, “My man, get the f*ck away from me.”
The incident occurred Tuesday at the Forbes Under 30 Summit at the Cleveland Public Auditorium in Cleveland, Ohio. Machine Gun Kelly, aka Colson Baker, was speaking to Forbes Senior Editor Kristin Stoller when, as seen in video of the event (see below), a young man walked onto the stage, startling both Baker and Stoller.
Baker stood up and, facing the intruder, calmly said, “My man, get the f*ck away from me. Yo, what are you doing? What are you doing? This is a bad look. Don’t make me do this.” The intruder was quickly restrained by security guards as the panel livestream briefly cut out.

Update, with additional box office figures: Lea Michele treated the final-night audience of Broadway’s Funny Girl to an extra song Sunday, performing “My Man,” popularized by Fanny Brice in 1921 but not included in the musical’s original score.
Michele performed the song – omitting, as did Barbra Streisand in the 1968 film version, the infamous “he beats me too” introductory verse used by Brice and Billie Holiday – after Sunday’s curtain call. (Watch it below.)
After thanking the audience, cast and crew profusely, Michele said, “If you know me then you will know that this is the hardest song I’ve ever sung and I want to give it to you” just before launching into “My Man.”
Although she didn’t explain the “hardest song” reference, Glee fans will remember that Michele’s character Rachel Berry sang the song in a 2011 episode over a montage of the actor Cory Monteith’s Finn character.

Lea Michele ended her run as the star of Broadway’s Funny Girl on Sunday.
The actress had stepped into the role a year ago, replacing Beanie Feldstein, who had debuted in the title role of Fanny Brice earlier that year.
The revival had launched in April 2022 to mixed reviews, with many arguing that Feldstein failed to fill the big shoes left by Barbra Streisand, who originated the role on Broadway in 1964, earning a Tony nom, and subsequently won an Oscar for her performance in the 1968 film adaptation. Feldstein announced her departure in July 2022. Meanwhile, Tovah Feldshuh took over Jane Lynch’s role as Fanny’s mom.
With Michele on board, producers reportedly were able to recoup capitalization costs, according to The New York Times, with the show boasting almost 600 performances at the August Wilson Theatre in New York.

The scripting was heavy as American Idol entered its fifth week of Season 21 auditions on Sunday, an episode which ended with a cliffhanger that felt a little too produced for my liking.
Fire Wilmore, a 22-year-old single mother from Oklahoma, was the final contestant of the evening, and the show played her up big time. We got her entire backstory about entering into state custody because of her own mother’s drug problems. We heard how desperately she wants to get out of exotic dancing and give a better future to her daughter. We even watched Fire teach her 4-year-old charmer how wishing wells work.

The stuck-in-one-place subgenre of horror is packed with clever concepts and places to be stuck in (from a coffin to a sailboat). #Manhole is the latest entry in this subgenre and it truly is one of these films where, no matter what it is anyone thinks is going on before watching, no one will ever guess what the actual twist is until it arrives. The film is the latest feature from Japanese genre director Kazuyoshi Kumakiri and it opened in Japan just a few weeks before premiering at the 2023 Berlin Film Festival. The title is officially #Manhole with the hash symbol, which makes sense once the film gets going and the social media subplot kicks in. This quick festival review will be spoiler free, as I'd rather everyone go watch this film without knowing anything more before heading in. It is not a spoiler to say that there are twists,...

Leading Japanese indie studio Gaga Corporation is launching suspense thriller “#Manhole” next week at Cannes.
Being directed by Kumakiri Kazuyoshi, from a screenplay by Okada Michitaka (“Masquerade Hotel”), the film depicts a promising young man, with everything going for him, who falls to the bottom of a deep manhole on the eve of his wedding.
Trapped and imagining all sort of horrors, the prospective bridegroom uses his smartphone to reach out to friends, the police and social media. But his predicament becomes worse. And it is far from sure that he makes it to the altar on time.
Production has just begun, and the cast has not yet been disclosed. Gaga will ensure a local release in Japan at a time yet to be finalized. The company also holds all world rights and will begin licensing the picture at the Cannes Market, the rights sales offshoot of the Cannes Film Festival.

Barbra Streisand was all of 21 when she opened on Broadway in 1964 in the role that made her one of the greatest stars: Fanny Brice in the musical “Funny Girl.” And on her 80th birthday April 24, Jonah Hill’s baby sister Beanie Feldstein stars in Streisand’s signature role in the first rialto revival of the bio-musical.
In commemoration of Brice, Streisand and Feldstein here are some fun facts, tidbits and trivia about the musical.
Who was Fanny Brice?
Brice, who was born in 1891, was just 18 when she made her Broadway debut in “Ziegfeld Follies of 1910.” She headlined a series of shows for the next quarter-century with the last being “Ziegfeld Follies of 1936.” She made her film debut in 1928’s “My Man,” appeared as herself in 1936’s “The Great Ziegfeld” and made her last screen appearance in 1945’s “Ziegfeld Follies.” She was best known for playing a mischievous little girl named Baby Snooks.

This year is going to be huge for DC and Warner Bros.
While we’re now less than a month away from “The Batman,” Matt Reeves’ bold new interpretation of the caped crusader (with Robert Pattinson in the cape and cowl), and DC and Warner Bros. want you to know that this is just the opening salvo in a year-long smorgasbord of superhero content. With a new sizzle, we get brand new footage from “Black Adam” (starring Dwayne Johnson) and “The Flash” (with Ezra Miller), alongside a glimpse of Aquaman (Jason Momoa) in his new costume from “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.” My man!
“The Batman,” which also stars Zoë Kravitz, Colin Farrell, Paul Dano and Jeffrey Wright, arrives in theaters March 4. Reeves has described this as “Year 2” of Pattinson’s crusade as Batman, this time going up against the Riddler (Dano) and the Penguin (Farrell) while forming an uneasy alliance with Selena Kyle,...

At the onset of 2020, everything was coming up Becky G. Nearly a decade after she signed a record deal with Sony Music, the now-23-year-old Chicana pop starlet had finally released her full-length debut on Sony Latin, Mala Santa, in October of 2019. A Spanish-language jaunt through pop, reggaeton, and Latin trap, the album was a grab-bag of new songs and earworms that had already circulated heavily across the U.S. and Latin America: take the 2018 feminist anthem “Sin Pijama” with Natti Natasha, and the Bad Bunny-assisted “Mayores.” She dipped her...

“I want to know why all the girl singers crack up. They crack up!” That’s Tony Bennett, in voiceover, musing aloud about the fate of the subject of “Billie,” an absorbing new documentary about master jazz singer Billie Holiday that had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival. Maybe Bennett was also thinking of Judy Garland when he said, almost naively, that as the years progress in these divas’ careers, “something tragic happens. I want to know what that is.”
If you’re inclined to accuse Bennett of sexism for any thoughts about fallen “girl singers,” keep in mind: His Q&a was recorded in the 1970s — as was nearly every other interview in “Billie.” Aside from film clips of the late star herself, the soundtrack for James Erskine’s smart and accessible doc consists almost entirely of previously unheard audio testimony from those who actually knew Holiday,...

It’s a fairly safe assumption that by the time most superstar singers reach their 70s, they’re pretty set in their setlist ways. So there was plenty of reason to suspect that Diana Ross’ performance with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra at the host venue’s official season opener Saturday night would be essentially a reprise of the show she was doing in her Las Vegas residency this past winter, with strings attached. But in this case, the answer to that eternal question of hers — “Do you know where you’re going to?” — was, wonderfully, no.
Saturday’s show turned out to be a true one-off, filled with songs Ross rarely — or never — performs live; only seven of the 16 choices overlapped with the set the Supreme being was doing in Sin City earlier in the year. She’s veteran enough to know that when you score a pickup band as...

Barbra Streisand sat down with Jamie Foxx at Raleigh Studios for a conversation about her Netflix special, “Barbra: The Music… The Mem’ries… The Magic!” on Sunday. The multi-hyphenate also described the prejudice she faced coming from the music industry to the film business.
“When I made ‘Yentl,’ my first directorial job, people were like, ‘You’re going to direct? You mean an actress can direct and be fiscally responsible for the budget?’ It’s interesting, in the music business, there is no gender discrimination,” Streisand recalled. “It’s like if you’re woman or a man, it’s who sells [the] most records. But It’s still a man’s world basically in the movies.”
Streisand also emphasized the importance of doing what you want in the industry. “I started doing TV shows when I was 21 or 22 and I didn’t care about the money. I can’t even tell you what they paid me,...

Ya gotta love passionate fans, but this is ridiculous. Not long after DC fans launched a petition to see a full Zack Snyder director's cut of Justice League, a new group of fans has launched a petition to see a Joss Whedon director's cut of the movie. The petition reads:
Everyone who saw Justice league can attest to the sheer genius that Joss Whedon brought to the movie. If he had been allowed to bring his entire vision to the screen, the movie would have been that much better. Examples of his touches include "Booya" as uttered by cyborg and the now classic line "My man" that has now become a battle cry by fishermen the world over after Aquaman showed he could speak to fish And quip at the same time. Let's make it happen. Join me and together we can see the rest of the mustachioed footage left on the cutting room floor.

Diana Prince and Victor Stone lobby for the lion’s share of the spotlight in today’s all-new promo for Justice League.
Nipping at the heels of The Flash and Aquaman, this latest snippet signals the beginning of Wonder Woman and Cyborg week, which tells us that Warner Bros. is also planning a week-long showcase of Batman (and Superman, perhaps?) in the lead-up to November 17th.
But before the Caped Crusader is ushered into the spotlight, the next seven days are all about Wonder Woman and her cybernetic ally, Victor Stone. Rising from tragedy to become a force for good, Cyborg may be part machine, but he’s all superhero, and it looks certain that Ray Fisher’s costumed crusader will share a special bond with Arthur Curry in a few weeks’ time. “My man!”

Lou Reed: A Life Anthony DeCurtis (Little, Brown and Company)
Lou Reed has to be one of the most audacious and iconic rockers to have committed his dark muses to his music and poetry. And writer/professor Anthony DeCurtis's new must-read bio of Mr. Reed perfectly captures the ethos of this misanthropic rocker. Let's be clear, Lou's outrageous life story is truly stranger than fiction.
