Photo: Cannes Film Festival This morning the Cannes Film Festival announced the line-up for the 64th edition of the fest, which will run from May 11-22. Before getting to the films, managing director of the festival, Thierry Fremaux, announced that 1715 films were submitted for consideration, representing 33 countries. Of those films 19 were included in competition, and of those 19, four were directed by female directors, a record for the fest.
As for the films included in the festival, the competition looks fierce. Just a few names you might recognize among the competition crowd include Terrence Malick, Pedro Almodovar, Takashi Miike, Nicolas Winding Refn, Lars Von Trier and Lynne Ramsay. Beyond that many of the names are new to me, but that's the number one reason I go to Cannes, the international flavor of this festival surpasses any of the major fests you'll find in North America.

On a friend’s unfashionable laptop, when DearCinema.com went live, little did I know that my life was about to change! Something that I thought I was doing in my free time, the little that I got from my hectic job, is going to drive me crazy to leave everything behind to start on a journey where no roadmap can be of any help. A road filled with doubts and discoveries, excitement and agonies, apprehensions and re-affirmed faith!
I still wonder why on earth there wasn’t already a DearCinema.com! Had there been one, life would have been much different.
I guess, there come moments of truths in everyone’s life, when one has to get out of the comfort of lies that we weave around ourselves. I was quite a well-to-do, reasonably successful, television journalist and producer, when I suddenly started missing a life I had left behind in a small,...

Here we are, the final installment of my 2011 preview and I have 36 new films to discuss, which means in the last four days I have brought you information on 133 different films opening (or expected to open) in 2011. I'd say that's one hell of a comprehensive preview.
Today's installment brings you a look at potential Oscar contenders and a dozen foreign language films I decided to single out. But before we get too far, let me remind you of the previous installments should you want to start at the beginning: Tuesday, January 4: 25 Most Anticipated Movies of 2011 Wednesday, January 5: Curiosities, Quirky, Unconventional and Bizarre Movies Thursday, January 6: Blockbusters and Popcorn Features Today, January 7: Foreign Language and Oscar Hopefuls First we'll begin with the Oscar Contenders. Below I've listed 39 films I feel will mark the start of the Oscar conversation for the new year. Fifteen of these films I've...

What's the best way to go about previewing 2011? A most anticipated list? An Oscar hopeful list? A prediction of what films will most likely be atop the yearly box-office? What?
I created a massive list of films coming in 2011 with the intention of doing what I did last year when I previewed 50 films in two parts. Only this year I was wrestling with over 100 movies and then I was bumping up against the problem of whether I should work with just the films I am personally anticipating or preview the films most people will be talking about?
Personally I'm not anticipating films such as Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger or Transformers: Dark of the Moon, but can you really write an article about the films of 2011 and not mention these movies? Therefore, I figured I'd just make a few categories and then open the doors for comments and your lists of most anticipated films.
