Exclusive: Belgian distribution and production company Belga Films Group is reuniting with award-winning director Jaco Van Dormael to produce The Magician of Auschwitz, which will be his first English-language feature in 15 years after shooting mainly in French.
Van Dormael will direct from a screenplay adaptation by Jacob Marx Rice of Portuguese journalist and writer José António Dos Santos’ twin novels ‘The Magician of Auschwitz’ and ‘The Birkenau Scrolls’, about a Portuguese soldier, Russian girl and Jewish magician thrown together in the horror of Auschwitz.
Dos Santos drew the novels from authentic manuscripts written by members of the Sonderkommando during the Holocaust and found hidden near death camp crematoria post-liberation. They shed light on the harrowing experiences of the members of special command units composed of prisoners who were forced to help run the gas chambers and crematoria.

“And On The Eighth Day Bava Created Color.” That’s my sentiment with every new quality restoration of a Mario Bava picture. This amazing new disc of Il Maestro’s teeth-clenched Viking epic delivers stunning action scenes and eye-bending widescreen fantasy visuals. Arrow’s Blu-ray is spiked with a new Tim Lucas commentary.

“La La Land” (Lionsgate) more than met its high-end expectations. It scored $855,000 in five theaters with an astounding per theater average of $171,000: beat only by “Grand Budapest Hotel,” opening against far less competition early in the year.
The critically hailed Hollywood musical already won Best Film from the New York Film Critics, and is primed to shine during the ongoing awards season. But part of any major Oscar contender’s profile is its popular reception. And it scored a huge initial audience response this weekend in New York and Los Angeles. Likely to factor in both Sunday’s Critics’ Choice Awards and Monday’s Golden Globes nominations Monday, “La La Land”‘s Oscar momentum just got stronger.
This early December weekend is a dead zone except for just this type of top-of-the-line awards entry. “The Big Short” opened this weekend in 2015 in eight multi-city initial dates and grossed $705,000. “La...

I was watching Gattaca again recently and realized that the Andrew Niccol sci-fi masterpiece deserved its own Fun Facts list. This is one of my favorite movies, and if you haven’t seen it, you’re missing out on something special. This was the first film that Niccol made and for a first-time film project, he completely nailed it. He made a spectacular film, and even with the six films he’s made since, Gattaca is still his best.
A lot of the information here comes from Imdb, and I've included some of my own commentary as well as videos for you to watch. Here are 13 Fun Facts about Gattaca that you may not have known:
Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman started dating during the filming of the movie. They eventually got married, but later divorced in 2005.There was a marketing campaign for the film when it was first released...

Le tout Nouveau Testament
Director: Jaco Van Dormael // Writers: Thomas Gunzig, Jaco Van Dormael
Get ready for some inventive strangeness from Belgian auteur Jaco Van Dormael, who won the Camera d’Or back in 1991 for his inspired debut, Toto, the Hero. But he’s most famous for his lavish 2009 English language production, Mr. Nobody, a sort of philosophical sci-fi extravaganza that starred Jared Leto. The film cost upwards of 33 million euros and was greeted with an incredibly cool reception, not even available for Us audiences until 2013 when Leto’s Oscar campaign for The Dallas Buyers Club was in full force. Now, Van Dormael has scaled it back a bit (he did have a demure 2011 title, Kiss & Cry, which has yet to see any kind of release here) with his latest, Le tout Nouveau Testament (The Brand New Testament), which professes to tell the story of God and his exacerbated relationship...

We're sure when writer/director Jaco Van Dormael first came up with the premise for "Mr. Nobody," his first film since 1996's "The Eighth Day," it seemed like a fresh and original idea. Certainly we were intrigued back in 2009 by the time-spanning tale about a man who wakes up in the year 2092 to find himself 120 years old, the oldest man in the world and the last mortal in a world where nobody dies. But, unfortunately, a number of other films have come along in the interim of the long-delayed film—"The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button," "The Fountain," "Inception,""Cloud Atlas"—that have also flirted with the territory of time, memory, fate, destiny, and love. To be certain, even if those films never existed, it wouldn't make the achingly juvenile "Mr. Nobody" any better, but the fact that they do only makes the flaws in Dormael's film stand out even more.

Blue Is the Warmest Color movie: Julie Maroh discusses Abdellatif Kechiche’s failure to acknowledge her (photo: Léa Seydoux in Blue Is the Warmest Color) [See previous post: "Lesbian Sex Scenes 'Turned into Porn' Complains Blue Is the Warmest Color Author."] In the segment below (translated from the French original found here), Julie Maroh describes her less-than-satisfying professional relationship with Abdellatif Kechiche. I’m not a mind reader, but I do believe that her last couple of sentences carry a heavy dose of irony. (See also “Blue is the Warmest Color release date?“) This finale at Cannes is evidently incredible, breathtaking. … Tonight, I discovered that it was the first time in film history that a "comic strip" [graphic novel] inspired a Palme d’Or winner, and this thought leaves me petrified. … I’d like to thank everyone who was astonished, shocked, disgusted that Kechiche didn’t say a thing about me while accepting the Palme d’Or. I have no doubts that he had good reasons for not having done so,...

Steven Spielberg leads a star-studded Cannes jury, which also includes Lynne Ramsay, Daniel Auteuil and Vidya Balan
Might it be the most star-studded Cannes jury in history? The world's most famous film festival has announced that this year's president, Steven Spielberg, will be joined by a cavalcade of heavyweight figures – including Oscar winners Ang Lee, Christoph Waltz and Nicole Kidman.
The glittering quartet will be joined by Britain's Lynne Ramsay, perhaps with time on her hands after exiting the Natalie Portman indie western Jane's Got a Gun, French cinema icon Daniel Auteuil, Romanian film-maker Cristian Mungiu, Japanese director Naomi Kawase and Bollywood star Vidya Balan.
Mungiu, Ramsay, Auteuil and Kawase are all past Cannes award-winners. Ramsay took a Youth prize in 2002 for her elliptical drama Morvern Callar, while Kawase won the Camera d'Or for Suzaku in 1997 and the Grand Prix in 2007 for The Mourning Forest. Auteuil won the best actor...
