Patricia Clarkson and Stanley Tucci share more in common than critical accolades and impressive resumes. Both actors enjoyed professional breakthroughs somewhat later in life, after struggling through their 20s and early 30s. Each credits the Steven Bochco series "Murder One" as a major turning point in their careers. And both share similar perspectives on their craft and the business -- not to mention a wicked sense of humor.Clarkson and Tucci have teamed up before in projects Tucci has co-written and directed, beginning with the 2000 film "Joe Gould's Secret." In 2007, the pair played a married couple estranged by tragedy who repeatedly pretend to meet for the first time in "Blind Date," inspired by a film from the late Dutch director Theo van Gogh. This month, the duo will reteam as a far more lighthearted couple in "Easy A," a smart new comedy from director Will Gluck and writer Bert V. Royal.

One of the most noticeable things about Patricia Clarkson and Stanley Tucci is that they’re both excellent at what they do. You might also realize that, while each has been working steadily since the mid-80s, you’ll be hard-pressed to find either as the leading lady or man in the movies they’ve done.
Such was the case until about two years ago, when they starred together in Blind Date, a loose remake of the 1996 Theo van Gogh film of the same name. Janna (Clarkson) and Don (Tucci, who also directs), trying to find their way back from the long-ago death of their daughter (who, somewhat strangely, provides narration), decide to go on a series of blind dates to figure out how or even if — they can mend their marriage. They switch off placing personal ads and meet up for date after date, pretending to be people they’re not.

Public Enemies (Universal) Johnny Depp portrays legendary Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger in co- writer/director Michael Mann’s take on America’s first “Public Enemy Number One.” Like many big studio releases today, Public Enemies has it all: A-list talent before and behind the camera, but lacks a heart or soul that allows its audience to connect with it. Film plays out like a “true crime” TV show with re-enactments of famous events cast with top actors and shot by the best technicians in the business, with little, if any, character or story development to hold it together in between. A real disappointment from one of our finest filmmakers and finest actors. The lone standout: the great character actor Stephen Lang as a hard-eyed lawman who’s seen a lot, but manages to retain a tiny piece of his heart. For a better take on the same subject,...

I don't even want to think about what it portends that a film as good as Stanley Tucci's Blind Date has had to wait almost two years for distribution. It's not a healthy sign, to be sure. Oh, who am I kidding? The bottom has dropped out of the market for serious films, independent or otherwise. Bread and circuses -- audiences just want diversion. they want mindless entertainment that doesn't force them to think -- about their own lives or the world at large. The only place to consistently find quality original drama these days is on cable TV. Part of what was originally intended to be a trio of American films based on films by the late Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh (the first was Steve Buscemi's Interview; the third one wasn't made), Blind Date premiered at Sundance '08 and has...

This week, contrasting approaches to filmmaking bring about balance and equilibrium. Experimentalism (Sally Potter's "Rage" and Michael Almereyda's "Paradise") collides head on with tried and tested formulas (the Clive Owen starrer "The Boys Are Back" and a remake of "Fame").

Blind Date is a new comedy/drama feature from actor/director Stanley Tucci, starring Tucci, Patricia Clarkson and Thijs Römer. "...'Don' (Tucci) and his wife 'Janna' (Patricia Clarkson) meet every night in the same shabby nightclub where Don performs a magic act. Don and Janna's relationship has been on the verge of collapse since the death of their daughter, and they're trying to reconnect with each other through role playing, so each evening they pretend they're meeting for the first time on a blind date after discovering one another through personal ads. Sometimes they assume characters that are openly confrontational, while other times they try to bring a sweetness and intimacy back into their lives. More often than not their struggle to reclaim the love they knew ends in confusion and frustration..." Blind Date was adapted by Tucci and screenwriter David Schechter from filmmaker Theo Van Gogh's 1996 film of the same name,...

It's been a while, but if you have a good memory, you might remember that I quite like The Tooch... Stanley Tucci. He whipped up magic as Puck in Midsummer Night's Dream, but more importantly, he's the man behind Big Night -- one of the best foodie films Hollywood has seen. (Of course, he's also heading back to food with the upcoming Julie & Julia, but that's not the same.)
Now Variety reports that Tucci is gearing up to film a comedic drama called The Hunter, and he's grabbed Pierce Brosnan, Patricia Clarkson, and Julianne Moore to star. Written by The Tooch himself, the film is a coming-of-age story set in the aristocracy of New York's Upper Westchester County. Brosnan will play a middle-aged man clinging to the memories of his "once-charmed life and world." The Whit Stillman fan in me wants Chris Eigeman in a role like that, but I can dig Brosnan,...

It began at Sundance last year, when Steve Buscemi premiered his remake of the late Dutch director Theo van Gogh's 2003 film Interview--an imminently watchable and extremely well-received 90-minute drama featuring only two people. This year, Buscemi's partner in crime, Stanley Tucci, premieres his own remake, Blind Date--the second part of the duo's planned van Gogh trilogy. Centered on a married couple forced to cope with the death of their...

- This year's Spectrum section has been sectioned off into two: which if you ask me just makes pure logistical sense. Among the list are some regular Sundance faces and notably many first time filmmakers in this non-competitive category. The highly anticipated documentary film from Morgan Spurlock (that's him above on the camel) gets featured in doc section - after taking on McD's this time out he does what the U.S president has failed to do: actually try and find Bin Laden. Another film that will generate smiles is Stephen Walker's Young@Heart - imagine Coldplay sung by your grandma... Sony Pictures Classics picked up those rights a while back. Stacy Peralta goes from extreme sports back ground (Riding Giants) to looking an the gang wars between the blue and red teams in California. In the features section we have director (Xx/Xy) Austin Chick's newest about

- Cannes – In the final film of the trilogy devoted to remaking Theo Van Gogh’s works, director John Turturro is has been tapped to helm 1-900 a remake of the slain Dutchman’s film “06”(1995). Bob Balaban was initially slated for the project. The new project follows two lonely souls who meet through a sex chat line. Typically the digits needed to initiate such a call are “1-900”, hence the title choice. The first pic in the series was a remake of Van Gogh’s Interview, which was directed by and starred Indie vet Steve Buscemi. Buscemi has also worked with Turturro in the Kate Winslet musical romp Romance & Cigarettes, which garnered Turturro a nod at the Venice Film Festival in 2005. Interview co-starred Sienna Miller (Factory Girl) as America’s most popular soap star. The film has its first market screening in Cannes and is expected to be out July 13 by Sony.

- One of the more cerebrally pleasurable films showcased at Sundance (read my review) has just been acquired by Sony Pictures Classics. Michael Barker, Tom Bernard and Dylan Leiner from Sony Pictures Classics acquired the film from Cinemavault Releasing in Canada and Spc is set to release Steve Buscemi's battle of wits between the sexes this coming July. Based on the late director, Theo Van Gogh’s film, Interview is also part of a planned trilogy of Van Gogh remakes - Cinemavault should be shopping Blind Date and 1-900 at Cannes and/or the fall festival season. This is set in present day New York City, Pierre Peters (Buscemi) is a fading political journalist who at one time found success as a highly respected war correspondent. After a falling out with his editor, he is assigned to interview Katya (beautiful Sienna Miller), one of the country’s hottest young actresses.

The one time top 3 script not produced in Hollywood will be distributed by MGM and produced by Sidney Kimmel, John Cameron and Sarah Aubrey. Starring comfort food for the ladies star (and possible upcoming “Half Nelson” Oscar nominee) Ryan Gosling and Emily Mortimer, this is based on the script by Nancy Oliver (feature film writing debut), this tells the offbeat story of Lars (Gosling), a lonely, delusional young man whose life changes dramatically when an Internet friend comes to visit. Trio to remake van Gogh
TORONTO -- Steve Buscemi, Stanley Tucci and Bob Balaban have signed on to direct U.S. remakes of three films by the late Dutch director Theo van Gogh. Van Gogh was murdered in November in Amsterdam by Islamic radical Mohammed Bouyeri, who confessed to the slaying and was jailed for life. Van Gogh's murder followed a televised airing of his short film Submission, which portrayed violence against women in Islamic societies. Van Gogh's final feature 06/05: The Sixth of May has its North American premiere Thursday at the Toronto International Film Festival. As a tribute to the filmmaker, the three U.S. actor-directors have agreed to helm remakes of three of his films -- 06, the 1994 Dutch foreign-language Academy Award submission; Blind Date and Interview.
