David E. Diano, a veteran camera operator with credits including Tombstone, The Fast and the Furious, Wedding Crashers and Spider-Man 3, has died. He was 71.
Diano died Jan. 22 at Huntington Hospital in Pasadena of coronary issues after a battle with prostate cancer, his wife, still photographer Gemma Lamana, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Diano served as president of the Society of Camera Operators from 2003-04 before deciding not to run for a second term.
“To write that David was a one-of-a-kind friend to those of us who worked with him would be an understatement,” Soc historical chair Michael Frediani said in a statement. “His kindness, artistry and boyish smile endeared him to countess friends and fellow industry colleagues — and that is what set him apart from many,”
Diano shot 17 movies for cinematographer William Fraker, a six-time Oscar nominee, from 1983-2002. Those films included War Games (1983), Murphy’s Romance (1985), Baby Boom (1987), Memoirs of an Invisible Man...

Actor Charlize Theron got her first major film role when she was just 19-years-old. But she credited her own naivete as a youth for nabbing her the breakthrough feature.

Apart from her ability, Theron had a good amount of luck on her side when she was cast in 2 Days in the Valley. But fortune didn’t always smile down on the Oscar-winner. Before acting, Theron pursued a modeling career. In the end, however, she felt she was too tall to succeed in the industry.
“I was too tall, too big, too late for the supermodel look of the 80s. Kate Moss and all the tiny, grungy girls had just become fashionable, and I didn’t fit the bill,.” she once told HuffPost.

With its list of new releases for June 2023, Prime is bringing a handful of Amazon Originals and many recent movie hits to the fold.
It’s actually quite a busy month for non-American programming in Amazon Originals department. Shows and movies like Deadloch, My Fault, and Medellín all originate from outside the U.S. and U.K. For the American and British crowd, however, the streamer is debuting two big tentpoles.
The first is I’m a Virgo on June 23. Acclaimed director Boots Riley’s TV followup to Sorry to Bother You will tale the surreal and satirical tale of a giant in Oakland. That will be followed by the more conventional (assumedly) fourth season of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan on June 30.
The real fireworks this month come from a ludicrously deep bench of library TV and movie titles. Give them a look for yourself below but if we were to highlight just a few,...

There are really only two ways to become a successful action star. You can either come up through the ranks of the stunt world and hone your acting chops along the way, or start out as an actor first and mold yourself into a formidable fighter that's believable onscreen. Charlize Theron has done the latter, going from ingénue roles like "2 Days in the Valley" to an award-winning performance in "Monster" to instantly iconic action roles in "Mad Max: Fury Road" and "Atomic Blonde." Theron has clearly caught the bug for close combat brawls and complex fight choreography, and with the sequels "The Old Guard 2" and "Atomic Blonde 2" on the way, audiences are going to be watching her kicking, punching, and shooting her way through Hollywood for the foreseeable future.

How can Amazon Prime Video followup the first season finale of its biggest series ever in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power? The answer lies in its list of new releases for November 2022.
Understandably, Prime Video is probably pretty tired and won’t be opting for any more Middle-earth spectacle for awhile. In its place, however, are a couple of still intriguing Amazon Original series. British Western drama series The English is set to arrive on Nov. 11 to both Prime Video and BBC Two. Emily Blunt stars as a woman who heads to the American West in 1890 looking for revenge on the man she sees as responsible for the death of her son. Cool! Speaking of the English, the James Corden-starring Mammals also premieres on Nov. 11.

August 7, 2019, will mark the 44th birthday of Charlize Theron, an actress who has made huge transformations throughout her career. Success came pretty quickly for the South African born actress. After one uncredited role in a horror film, Theron burst onto movie screens in the film “2 Days in the Valley.” That film launched her into a series of roles usually as the wife or girlfriend and ones that capitalized on her stunning beauty. That all changed in 2003 when she took on the role of Aileen Wuornos, a Florida prostitute who became a serial killer and was put to death for her crimes. The film won Theron the Oscar as Best Actress and took her from pretty face to serious actress.

Everyone’s favorite South African actress Charlize Theron has shown vast range in her 20+ year career. The intense, crazed action of “Mad Max: Fury Road” the foul-mouthed slacker in “Young Adult,” the ditzy blonde on “Arrested Development,” and the literal “Monster” she won an Oscar for all sit side by side on her resume. Theron’s new film “Tully” opening Friday finds her in a role she’s never tackled before, a modern mom in way over her head. So it is we chart Theron’s growth as an actress and producer in a timeline stretching back to her earliest work.
Modeling and Dancing Years
Theron got her start as a model and a dancer, even attending the Joffrey School of Ballet until a knee injury made her rethink her career in America.
“2 Days in the Valley” (1996)
Theron’s first film speaking role was as the sultry Helga Svelgen in the thriller “2 Days in the Valley,” where she starred opposite Teri Hatcher, Jeff Daniels, James Spader and Danny Aiello.
“The Devil’s Advocate” (1997)
Theron had a string of larger projects in the late ’90s where she was attracted to working with interesting directors, be it Taylor Hackford on the Keanu Reeves film “The Devil’s Advocate,” Woody Allen for “Celebrity,” Lasse Hallstrom for “The Cider House Rules” or John Frankenheimer for “The Reindeer Games.”
“The Italian Job” (2003)
One of Theron’s first major action star roles was in “The Italian Job,” a remake of a classic heist caper where she starred opposite Mark Wahlberg and helped to make Mini Coopers awesome.
“Monster” (2003)
Theron went under a complete transformation to play Aileen Wournos, a prostitute turned serial killer. The film she produced along with her production company Denver & Delilah. And her crazed, intense, raw work won her an Oscar.
“North Country” (2005)
In Niki Caro’s drama about one of the first sexual harassment cases in the United States, Theron earned another Oscar nomination playing a woman who leaves her abusive husband and takes a job working in a mine.
“Arrested Development” (2005)
Theron guest starred during the third season of the cult sitcom “Arrested Development” as Rita, a love interest to Michael Bluth. She plays cute on the show, toying with the idea that she might be a British spy investigating the Bluths, until it’s revealed that she’s actually got the intelligence and attention span of a toddler.
“Aeon Flux” (2006)
Theron’s role as an exotic and mysterious assassin with a slick, jet black haircut in “Aeon Flux” didn’t take off as a franchise or at the box office, but it cemented Theron as a capable action star.
“Young Adult” (2011)
After a brief hiatus on the big screen, Theron took a radically different role as foul-mouthed slacker Mavis Gary, who tries to relive her glory days and make it with her high school sweetheart after going through a tough breakup.
“Mad Max: Fury Road” (2015)
The continuation of the “Mad Max” trilogy turned out to be a bait and switch where the film’s real star was Theron as Imperator Furiosa. With one arm, a shaved head and absolute intensity, she anchored one of the best action movies of the decade.
“Atomic Blonde” (2017)
Theron took another punishing role as something of a female John Wick in the stylized action movie “Atomic Blonde,” even doing all of her own stunts in the film.
“Tully” (2018)
“Tully” reunites Theron with her “Young Adult” director and writing combo Jason Reitman and Diablo Cody. In it, she plays a mother of three and a newborn in way over her head who forms a bond with her millennial nanny. Theron gained 50 pounds for the role.

A stand-out in virtually every project he’s part of, we’re always ready for another performance from John Hawkes. His latest film, Too Late, finds him as a private investigator in Los Angeles hunting down a missing woman. However, it likely won’t be the story that gets talked about most (at least initially) when it comes to Dennis Hauck’s feature, but rather the structure and exhibition. It’s composed of five acts, each a single, uncut 20-minute-plus shot (roughly the length of an entire projected film reel), and it’s being released in the now-rare, 35mm-exclusive format starting next month.
We said in our review, “A bit reminiscent of John Herzfeld’s Two Days in the Valley, the tale is woven from several different perspectives of an ensemble cast that all come nicely together at the end to complete a compelling puzzle. A seedy Los Angeles-set crime caper filtered through an Elmore Leonard novel is where you might find Dennis Hauck’s debut feature film Too Late. Presented out of sequence as five unbroken twenty minute shots, the film has an undeniable theatrical quality, with each scene feeling like an act of a play being performed out of order. And it’s all shot on 35mm film, giving it that unique grainy texture, all while giving credence to the fact that Hauck is paying tribute to the vintage era of cinema. A bit reminiscent of John Herzfeld’s Two Days in the Valley, the tale is woven from several different perspectives of an ensemble cast that all come nicely together at the end to complete a compelling puzzle. While there is a definite fetishization of Tarantino-style dialogue, characters and even plotting, Too Late does an admirable job of paying homage to this...

He's been racking up the action roles with the Expendables series, The Tomb, Grudge Match and Bullet To The Head. But it's just been revealed that Sylvester Stallone has also found time for a smaller indie project. He's been quietly taking part in an ensemble piece called Reach Me.Sly has already finished shooting, although there are few details on the project as yet. We certainly don't know who he played yet, but the currently sketchy IMDb synopsis describes Reach Me as a film about a group of people who all have a connection to a self-help book written by a reclusive retired football coach. The film is written and directed by John Herzfeld, previously responsible for Two Days In The Valley, 15 Minutes and The Life And Death Of Bobby Z. His friendship with Stallone dates back to at least 1986, when he played Cho in the sort-of classic Cobra. More recently,...

Charlize Theron has revealed she was briefly kicked out of America as her career was taking off - because she was working illegally in Hollywood.
The South African-born actress became an American citizen in 2007 but initially outstayed her welcome in the States when she was struggling to find work after her breakthrough role in Two Days In The Valley.
As her work visa expired, Theron was still fighting for roles in Hollywood - and had just landed a role opposite Al Pacino and Keanu Reeves in 2007 film The Devil's Advocate when immigration officials caught up with her.
She explains, "I had to hold out for two years after playing the femme fatale in Two Days In The Valley because people wanted me to play that role. I think there was a conscious effort on my part to hold back and I didn't work for two years and I waited and really fought for roles in The Devil's Advocate and The Yards, Cider House Rules.
"I went out on auditions and flew myself out (for movies) and almost went to prison and didn't wash my hair to break this idea of what people thought of me. I was deported when I was making Devil's Advocate, but that will be for my book one day."...

South African princess Charlize Theron looks to have found yet another project to add to her increasingly busy schedule. She's recently acquired the screen rights to Christopher Buckley's novel "Florence of Arabia" about a woman who's best friend marries an Middle Eastern prince and ends up being executed for renting Not Without My Daughter. Theron will play a State Dept. employee who feels the punishment exceeded the crime and goes on to fight for women's rights in the male-dominated society. It's a satire. I like Theron quite a bit. Her talented and naked presence in Reindeer Games and Two Days In The Valley helps make both films highly rewatchable. And in addition to this new project she currently has eight other future titles listed on IMDb. My wish though is that she'd focus on one single project... her remake of Chan-wook Park's Sympathy For Lady Vengeance. Park himself says Theron "gets" the character and I...

Charlize Theron was lucky to survive her first film - after Teri Hatcher beat her up. The South African beauty had to act a cat fighting scene with Hatcher in sexy thriller Two Days In The Valley - but director John Herzfeld claims the fighting got too realistic. He recalls, "Teri's first punch clocked Charlize sending her reeling to the floor. We had to bring out the ice to minimize any swelling. Teri was very contrite and apologetic, but there was palpable tension on the set. Their adrenaline went way up which is why that scene is so electric in the movie."...
