It can be such a beautiful happening when the natural forces of humanity and the wild kingdom can get together and establish a sense of harmony in motion pictures. Also, it can be a compelling yet regrettable conflict as well when man and beast decide to collide in the interest of big screen entertainment. Whatever the case may be certainly does not matter because the concept of beasts of all species (rather it be of the four-legged or two-legged variety) collectively clashing or cooperating sends a special message about triumph, tragedy and just plain tenderness.
In Beast of Burden: Top 10 Human-Animal Combinations in the Movies we will look at some of the best selections where man and animal co-exist whether it be in calmness or chaos. There is no doubt that one can come up with numerous top ten lists detailing their ideal man-animal themes in cinema. The struggle for...

Shortly before Peter Benchley's book went to press, he still hadn't decided on a title. It was a thriller about a murderous great white shark, and three men's quest to kill it. He went through a long list of potential ideas before eventually settling on a single syllable that later entered into our mythology and culture: Jaws.
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the book, Ballantine books has put out a special edition, featuring excerpts from Benchley's archives and his own book about the making of the bestseller and the subsequent Spielberg movie.
Courtesy of Ballantine, below you'll find the long list of alternative titles that Benchley considered, along with some of his handwritten notes from the time. While some are pretty chilling ("What Have We Done?"), we're not sure that a book and movie called Phosphorescence or Squam would have had quite the same impact.
What's your favorite alternative title to Jaws?...

Choosing my favourite horror films of all time is like choosing between my children – not that I have children, but if I did, I am sure I would categorize them quite like my DVD collection. As with all lists, this is personal and nobody will agree with every choice – and if you do, that would be incredibly disturbing. Also, it was almost impossible for me to rank them in order, but I tried. I based my list taking into consideration three points:
1- Technical accomplishments / artistry and their influence on the genre.
2- How many times I’ve revisited the films and how easily it makes for a repeated viewings.
3- Its story, atmosphere and how much it affected me when I first watched them.
Finally, there are many great films such as The Witchfinder General, The Wickerman and even Hour Of The Wolf that won’t appear here. I...

Peter Benchley spent the last 30 years of his career chasing the great white beast. For a time in the late 1970s and into the ’80s, Benchley wrote about people who were, ironically, stranded on islands or diving for hidden treasure in search of fool’s gold. But he soon returned to his bread and butter — tales of the deep, ripe with familiar-sounding titles like “The Beast,” “Great White” and “Creature.”
Benchley did Ok as far as writers go. Several of his books were spun into movies, and he eventually parlayed his great white fame into a “National Geographic” special as well as a series of non-fiction shark accounts. But, one way or another, Benchley’s fortunes would always be tied to “Jaws.”And you’ve got to imagine that, on some level, it must have been frustrating for Benchley, as if the great white predator he’d once created had...

A&E is loading up on "Sugarloaf."
The network has picked up the hourlong pilot starring Matt Passmore with a 13-episode order.
The Fox TV Studios drama centers on Jim Longworth (Passmore), a brilliant-but-difficult Chicago homicide detective who's wrongfully accused of sleeping with his former captain's wife and forced into exile. Longworth relocates to Sugarloaf, a sleepy Gulf Coast resort town in Florida where life can be less beautiful than it first seems.
Kiele Sanchez and Carlos Gomez co-star. Production is set to begin in Miami this winter for a summer premiere.
"Sugarloaf" was one of two drama pilots that A&E picked up last fall, along with "The Quickening," which starred Radha Mitchell as a bipolar homicide detective. The network passed on "Quickening" this month.
"We have only one spot for the summer, and when we screened 'Sugarloaf' we knew this is the one," A&E senior...

A&E has greenlighted "Sugarloaf," an hourlong pilot starring Matt Passmore.
The cable network also has tapped Jeffrey Nordling, John Heard and Michael Arden to co-star opposite Radha Mitchell in its other drama pilot, "The Quickening."
"Sugarloaf," from Fox TV Studios, centers on Jim Longworth (Passmore), an ex-Chicago cop who gets kicked off the force after being shot by his ex-captain, who wrongfully accused him in having an affair with his wife. After receiving a payout, Longworth, an observant detective with a sly sense of humor, moves to a small Florida town and joins the state police.
Clifton Campbell wrote "Sugarloaf" and is executive producing the pilot with Gary Randall. Peter O'Fallon is directing.
A&E had been high on the project for a while but didn't want to commit to a production order until it found the right lead actor.

In her first U.S. series role, Radha Mitchell has signed to topline A&E's drama pilot "The Quickening."
The project, from Fox TV Studios, centers on Maggie Bird (Mitchell), a homicide detective assigned to a desk job after it is discovered that she suffers from a bipolar disorder.
"Her illness makes her brilliant as a detective but makes her personal life hell," A&E senior vp drama programming Tana Nugent Jamieson said. "So she is teetering on and off her medications."
Filming on the pilot, written by Jennifer Salt ("Nip/Tuck"), will start next month in Los Angeles.
While she began her career on TV series in her native Australia, including a stint on the hit "Neighbours," Mitchell has been firmly planted in features since moving to Hollywood. She has appeared in only one U.S. TV project, NBC's 2001 miniseries "Uprising."
The actress, who is onscreen in "Surrogates," is...

Kind of a forgettable week for DVD shopping, with the exception of a couple of cool TV and Blu-ray releases. Big name titles hitting store shelves include Disney's Race to Witch Mountain starring The Rock, catfight thriller Obsessed starring Ali Larter and Beyonce Knowles, plus The Soloist starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jamie Foxx. There's also the indie Michael Chabon adaptation The Mysteries of Pittsburgh and low budget action/sci-fi flick Mutant Chronicles, plus the Lindsay Lohan direct-to-dvd comedy Labor Pains. Uhh... yeah. Save your money for the dry Kiwi comedy of Flight of the Conchords: Season 2 or the trippy outrageousness of Tim & Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! Season 3, plus Big Trouble in Little China on Blu-ray. Race to Witch Mountain [1] (DVD, Blu-ray [2]) Obsessed [3] (DVD, Blu-ray [4]) The Soloist [5] (DVD, Blu-ray [6]) The Mysteries of Pittsburgh [7] (DVD, Blu-ray [8]) Mutant Chronicles [9] (DVD, Blu-ray [10]) Delgo [11] Labor Pains [12] (DVD, Blu-ray [13]) Fragments [14] The Chaos Experiment [15] You Must Remember This...
