Not that long ago, a dark thriller featuring Kevin Spacey as a smooth-talking stranger who arrives in a small town with an apparent vendetta against one of its inhabitants might have been a major movie event. He was, after all, a hugely popular and critically acclaimed actor, known for playing iconic villains from The Usual Suspects and Seven all the way up through House of Cards. His gift for intimate, Shakespearean malice could certainly boost a box-office haul.
But not this time: I saw Spacey’s new film, Peter Five Eight,...

Kevin Spacey will star as The Devil in The Contract, aiming to resurrect his acting career. The Contract, inspired by classic thrillers like Angel Heart, remains mysterious as Spacey takes on the role of Satan in this upcoming project. Spacey has denied sexual misconduct allegations, returning to acting with last year's Control.
Controversial actor Kevin Spacey will star as The Devil himself in the upcoming thriller, The Contract. While it may be questionable PR, Spacey will star as The Devil for Italian filmmaker Massimiliano Caroletti, with the project reportedly the first of three movies in a series (via THR). The two-time Oscar winner continues his attempt to resurrect his acting career after largely staying away from the public eye in the wake of the #MeToo movement and several accusations of sexual misconduct against the actor which were unearthed.

Marmalade is a romantic heist comedy that explores the lengths someone is willing to go for love. The movie pays homage to classic films like Raising Arizona and Bonnie and Clyde while adding its own twist. The director, Keir O'Donnell, carefully crafted the look of the film and chose a talented ensemble cast to bring the characters to life.
Sometimes, true love can lead to dangerous situations, as in Marmalade. The romantic heist comedy revolves around Baron, a mild-mannered postal worker in a small Southern town who falls head over heels for the titular newcomer, only to be drawn into a bank robbery that forces him to question how far he's willing to go for the woman he loves.
Stranger Things vet Joe Keery leads the Marmalade cast alongside Camila Morrone, fresh off her Emmy nomination for Daisy Jones & the Six, and Aldis Hodge. Written and directed by Ambulance's...

Throughout the 96-year history of the Academy Awards, the amount of acting lineups consisting only of first-time nominees has reached 37, or about 10% of the overall total. While that number may not seem high in a general sense, these cases actually outnumber those exclusively involving veteran contenders by a ratio of three to one. However, although this list expanded as recently as 2023, rookie-only acting lineups are gradually becoming less common than veteran-only ones, the amount of which has nearly doubled within the last dozen years.
Whereas 75% of veteran-only acting quintets have involved lead performers rather than supporting ones, almost the exact opposite is true of lineups full of newcomers. For instance, only one existing case of the former kind concerns supporting actresses, whereas the same category has produced 15 rookie-only rosters. The last such group consisted of 2000 winner Angelina Jolie and nominees Toni Collette (“The Sixth Sense”), Catherine Keener (“Being John Malkovich...

Kevin Spacey plays a killer with no moral compass in the official trailer for Peter Five Eight, which marks his first leading role since his career imploded amid allegations of sexual misconduct in 2017.
Spacey’s assassin character, Peter, has a comedic streak as he’s called to a small mountain community to find a seemingly glamorous real estate agent with a dark secret, played by Jet Jandreau.
Peter targets Brenda, played by Rebecca de Mornay, for information at the urging of his powerful and shadowy boss, Mr. Lock, played by Jake Weber. Before long, guns are drawn and fired and car chases abound in the trailer as blood splatters and explosions disturb the sleepy town. Michael Zaiko Hall directs the feature.

Some films deliberately keep key details ambiguous, which can be frustrating but ultimately rewarding for viewers. Films like The Usual Suspects and Y Tu Mamá También use major dramatic reveals to transform viewers' perceptions. Movies like Memento and Frailty hide sinister motivations and twist endings that challenge viewers' understanding.
While many moviegoers anticipate a clear understanding when watching a film, some deliberately keep things confusing until the end. This intentional ambiguity provides a satisfying moment of clarity that lingers beyond the credits, making the movie more intriguing upon a second viewing. Audiences generally expect films to adhere to a basic narrative logic that allows them to connect with the story and characters. However, some movies make risky moves by intentionally obscuring key details for much of the runtime. Rather than spelling everything out upfront, these films indulge in ambiguity, withholding vital context around the plot and motivations.

If executed well, twist endings can result in a fun experience. Having the rug pulled out from under you in a way that sheds new light on the entire film can make you instantly want to watch the rest of the film again. Whether it's "The Usual Suspects," "Fight Club," or "The Sixth Sense," the twist sends a blast of dopamine through your brain that leaves you walking out of the theater on a dizzying high.
Rarer are the twist endings that leave you utterly bereft and devastated, where that hit of dopamine is replaced by crushing defeat. Attempting this kind of ending can be enormously precarious, as you introduce the distinct possibility of completely alienating your audience. Sometimes that's the point, like in Michael Haneke's "Funny Games," but more often than not, you are looking to give the viewers an emotionally cathartic ending that is in keeping with the narrative.

Jack Lemmon won for his supporting turn in “Mister Roberts” in 1956 before he took home Best Actor in 1974 for “Save the Tiger.”
Ingrid Bergman won Best Actress in 1945 for “Gaslight” and again in 1957 for “Anastasia” before she took home a supporting award in 1975 for “Murder on the Orient Express.”

Producer Molly Smith confirms that Christopher McQuarrie, best known for writing/ directing the last three Mission: Impossible movies, is involved in Sicario 3. It's not clear in what capacity McQuarrie is working on the third film, but it could be as screenwriter, with the filmmaker having previously written a number of films he has not directed. McQuarrie's impressive career and eye for storytelling suggests he would be a good fit for the gritty world of Sicario.

The parodic film Scary Movie is enjoying renewed success on Netflix, ranking number 10 worldwide and attracting 3.7 million views during the week of October 16-22. The film's slapstick humor and references to popular horror and non-horror movies make it the perfect comedy for late October, and its iconic Ghostface parody has become ingrained in pop culture. While Scary Movie sequels were made, none have achieved the same level of success and cultural impact as the original, highlighting the importance of smart and goofy writing for a potential sequel to work.
The 23-year-old Scream parody film Scary Movie is seeing renewed success on Netflix, just in time for the Halloween season. Released in 2000, the movie is a comedic take on aspects of the horror genre, in particular pulling from Wes Craven's popular slasher franchise. In addition, the film also parodies other popular horror movies at the time, like The Sixth Sense and The Blair Witch Project.

A seemingly innocuous, yet strikingly familiar introduction to this artist – as the man behind The Streets has always been renowned for his informal accessibility. His approachable, even intelligible tonality, the relatable lyricism, which manages to be so real, and yet so poetic at the same time. Scary Movie parodies a wide range of films, including horror, drama, and action genres. The opening installment of Scary Movie, for example, is a Scream parody, featuring a similar mask, plot, and characters. It also mocks Scream's lack of plot. The Matrix, Halloween, The Sixth Sense, The Usual Suspects, The Shining, and The Exorcist are among the other films parodied in Scary Movie.
The Scary Movie franchise has made fun of some iconic films, and its opening 2000 installment kicked things with dozens of parodies in that regard. In 1998, prolific sci-fi novelizer and comic book writer Michael Jan Friedman penned a high-concept crossover novel called "Planet X."
"Planet X" took place in the same universe as "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and detailed historical events on a planet called Xhaldia. It seemed that Xhaldian citizens were suddenly developing eerie extrasensory abilities and mutating into strange, powerful creatures. Captain Picard and the U.S.S. Enterprise were called in to investigate. By a stroke of luck, the Enterprise encounters a rift in space leading to a parallel universe, and onto the Enterprise step the Uncanny X-Men of Marvel Comics fame. The X-Men offer insight into the events on Xhaldia, as it's very similar to what happened on Earth, at least in "X-Men" comics. I assure you, this novel is 100% real.

Before his career came crashing down, Bryan Singer was one of the most successful directors in Hollywood. Having risen through the ranks thanks to his early indie work, Singer was one of the first big directors to emerge from the Sundance Film Festival. His first movie, Public Access, won the Grand Jury Prize, and his follow-up, The Usual Suspects, became a smash hit that made Kevin Spacey a household name. After making an underrated Stephen King adaptation, Apt Pupil, Singer directed 2000’s X-Men. This was arguably the first true Marvel superhero movie and a noted detour from how comic book movies were usually filmed because Singer took the material seriously. The follow-up, X2: X-Men United, was an even bigger smash and helped make Hugh Jackman, who was plucked from obscurity to play Wolverine, one of the biggest stars of his era.
But, behind the scenes, there was a lot of drama surrounding Singer.

Ballerina director Len Wiseman has finished the director's cut, even though production has been paused due to strikes. The film expands the John Wick universe with new characters played by Gabriel Byrne, Catalina Sandino Moreno, and Norman Reedus. Expect memorable action sequences and thrilling fight scenes that make Ballerina its own story within the John Wick universe when it comes to theaters on June 7, 2024.
Ballerina director Len Wiseman offers up a positive update about the John Wick spinoff film in the midst of its current production shutdown. Many Hollywood film and TV projects have halted production due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA's strikes against studios that are part of the AMPTP. Post-production on Ballerina was paused in the wake of the strikes, though it's unclear if the strikes themselves had to do with the decision.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Wiseman gave a positive update on the production of Ballerina.

The Continental is set to spin off the John Wick franchise in big ways. The franchise has come a long way since it debuted in 2014. John Wick reinvigorated the career of star Keanu Reeves. The film's plot involved Reeves’ hit man, the titular John Wick, being unceremoniously forced out of retirement by the reckless act of a gangster’s son. The film was a modest hit financially, grossing $43 million at the domestic box office, along with another 43 million dollars worldwide. A return to the basic plot conventions of a lean and mean revenge thriller combined with excellent camera work and stunt coordination struck a nerve with audiences. Word of mouth propelled John Wick to many must-see lists in 2014.
The rest is history as the action film has spawned three sequels, the most recent of which was John Wick: Chapter 4, which came out on March 24, 2023, and is one of the biggest movies of the year,...

Marvel’s popular and iconic X-Men movies might’ve looked a lot different if James Cameron followed through on plans to bring the mutants to cinema. But the franchise’s architect Stan Lee directed Cameron’s attention to another superhero in his portfolio.

Before starting the Avatar universe, Cameron was once interested in entering the superhero space with his production company Lightstorm entertainment. The first property he seemed keen on getting his hands on was the X-Men franchise, which would later be inherited by Bryan Singer to direct. According to comic book writer Chris Claremont, Cameron was close to producing a film about Marvel’s mutants. His ex-wife, Kathryn Bigelow, was set to direct.

It can be a tired gimmick at times, but Hollywood will never get sick of hitting us with shocking plot twists. Done wrong, it feels like nothing but a risk that didn't need to be taken, but done right, it can turn a decent film into one that will never be forgotten. For example, The Usual Suspects was a fun mystery thriller, but those last five minutes, when Keyser Söze is revealed, were so effectively shocking that the film became an instant classic.

“Dance First,” a portrait of Irish writer Samuel Beckett starring Gabriel Byrne and directed by Oscar winner James Marsh, will close this year’s San Sebastian Film Festival, playing out of competition.
The closing film screening, on Sept. 30, will mark the film’s world premiere.
Byrne, a memorable lead in “The Usual Suspects” and “Miller’s Crossing” who also won a Golden Globe for his performance in “In Treatment,” plays Beckett. Last week, Kevin Spacey was acquitted of nine sexual assault charges in a courtroom in London, England. Following the verdict, Spacey burst into tears and then thanked the jurors who acquitted Spacey, whose career and life have been paralyzed by sex abuse allegations since 2017 when actor Anthony Rapp accused Spacey of sexually harassing Rapp at a party in 1986 when Rapp was fourteen, and Spacey was twenty-six.
Spacey’s victory in the criminal trial follows his 2022 court victory over Rapp, who filed a $40 million civil lawsuit against Spacey for allegedly molesting Rapp when he was a teenager. In 2019, a potential criminal assault charge against Spacey was dropped by prosecutors in Massachusetts after an accusing witness suddenly refused to testify. If Spacey had been convicted in this case, he could have been sentenced to five years in prison.

While Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One didn’t quite break the bank as predicted, Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie won’t let it slow a good partnership down. The two have collaborated on a number of Cruise’s latest outings, including the last three Mission: Impossible sequels, Top Gun: Maverick and Jack Reacher. McQuarrie gained recognition with his script for The Usual Suspects, which he parlayed into his debut outing as both the writer and director of a violent, crime thriller with a side of dark comedy titled The Way of the Gun back in 2000.
McQuarrie is coming back to his harder-edged roots on a secret project with Cruise that he’s describing as a “gnarly” R-rated film. Back in 2020, McQuarrie hinted to Empire about the project and speaking once again with Empire for his in-depth talk about Dead Reckoning Part One, he confirms the project is still...

Shea Whigham thought his pursuit of Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker would forever be his toughest assignment, but then Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt quickly proved him wrong in Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One.
In Christopher “McQ” McQuarrie’s critically acclaimed seventh chapter of the spy action franchise, Whigham plays Jasper Briggs, a foot soldier for the CIA’s Clandestine Services, and together with his partner Degas (Greg Tarzan Davis), he’s tasked with the tall order of chasing Ethan Hunt around the world. And while his similar role in Todd Phillips’ box office smash hit Joker (2019) would seem like the inspiration for his Mission casting, it was actually his Dod bureaucrat character from the Sam Esmail-directed and Julie Roberts-led Homecoming that piqued McQ’s interest.

Even though the Mission: Impossible franchise is known for setting the bar (sometimes really high up) when it comes to ambitious action sequences, we all draw inspiration from somewhere. Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey gets a thrill by preying on other men, a prosecutor told jurors during his sexual assault trial Friday in a London courtroom.
Spacey is “a man who does not respect personal boundaries or space, a man who it would seem delights in making others feel powerless and uncomfortable — a sexual bully,” Prosecutor Christine Agnew said in her opening statement. “His preferred method of assault is, it appears, to grab aggressively other men in the crotch.”
The four men who have accused Spacey of sexual assault did not know each other, but all “had the misfortune to attract” his attention, she said.
Spacey, 63, has pleaded not guilty to a dozen charges including sexual assault, indecent assault and causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent.

Two-time Oscar winner Kevin Spacey walked into a London courtroom Wednesday to face trial on charges of sexually assaulting four men as long as two decades ago.
The actor was dressed in a dark blue suit, light blue shirt and pink tie as he was called by his full name and asked if he was Kevin Spacey Fowler.

Spacey, 63, has pleaded not guilty to a dozen charges including sexual assault, indecent assault and causing a person to engage in sex activity without consent. He could face a prison sentence if convicted.
Spacey nodded and smiled at potential jurors as Justice Mark Wall told them that they may know Spacey by name or have seen his films.
