Netflix will produce and release 53 Domingos, the new film from Spanish director Cesc Gay, an adaptation of his own award-winning theater play.
The dramedy follows three brothers who meet up to discuss what to do with their octogenarian father who has started behaving oddly. As they debate whether to put him in a nursing home or have him move in with one of them, the polite family meeting descends into an outrageous, out-of-control fight.
Carmen Machi (Piggy), Javier Cámara (Talk to Her) and Javier Gutierrez (Prison 77) star in the film version.
Gay is best known internationally for his 2015 breakout Truman, starring Ricardo Darín and Javier Cámara. His other features include Stories Not to Be Told (2022), En la ciudad (2003), and Nico and Dani (2000).

January 1999. One quarter of a century ago. I attended the Golden Globe Awards for the first time (as an accredited member of the press) — and it was a night that I’ll never forget.
Interestingly enough, the most memorable moment of the night for me wasn’t having Best TV Supporting Actress co-winner Camryn Manheim (“The Practice”) quiz me on lines from 1997’s hit comedy “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion.”
Rather, it was when I was practically escorted out of the backstage press room for expressing my shock when Lauren Bacall announced Jim Carrey as the year’s Best Drama Actor for “The Truman Show,” beating out the likes of Tom Hanks in “Saving Private Ryan,” Ian McKellen in “Gods and Monsters” and Nick Nolte in “Affliction.” (My money had been on McKellen.)

Former studio executive and prolific producer Paula Weinstein is leaving Tribeca Enterprises, where she’s been chief content officer for the past decade, to jump into political work and help “as many voices as possible be heard.”
“I don’t want to sit on the sidelines and rail about everything. I really want to jump in, fully, into the campaigns. Both statewide and national campaigns,” she tells Deadline. “It just feels very much like a moment…between the climate, and book banning and everything else that I don’t need to go into.”
In a memo to staff this morning, Tribeca CEO Jane Rosenthal said Weinstein will “devote her efforts to fighting for the preservation and advancement of human and women’s rights, and most urgently the upcoming elections.” She will also continue to consult for Tribeca. Next summer’s festival, dates just announced, would have been her 12th.

After Jim Carrey became a breakout star on the sketch show In Living Color, he had a string of huge theatrical hits in the mid-’90s, including Ace Ventura, Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber. America clearly loved watching Carrey in comedies, but director Peter Weir saw something more in his performances. And it was Weir’s instinct that led to Carrey’s dramatic breakthrough, The Truman Show. The movie became a huge hit, and Carrey’s performance won him both critical acclaim and a Golden Globe award. When the film originally opened, Weir talked us through his thought process in choosing Carrey for the role. There’s a little moment in The Truman Show which I think about a lot. Truman and his college pals are at a ‘50s-style dance in their tuxes, twisting to a twangy, yee-haw version of T Rex’s ‘20th Century Boy’ which sounds like it was recorded at Sun Records. It is, as a guy who’s very much not Marc Bolan sings, just like rock ‘n’ roll.
But it only clicked the second time I watched the film that it was a snapshot of the weirdness which bubbles underneath the surface of The Truman Show. Jim Carrey’s Truman couldn’t possibly be exposed to actual rock ‘n’ roll in case it fired up a spirit of rebellion and mistrust of authority. The shadowy forces behind his life-as-entertainment couldn’t possibly risk their asset becoming a fan of the Beatles and deciding to turn off his mind, relax and float downstream,...

When the wonderful Ms. Charlaine Harris sat down to scratch out the first lines of Dead Until Dark, the first of The Southern Vampire Mysteries that would go on to become the basis for HBO's series "True Blood," there's no way should could have known it was going to go on to become the mega-hit we know today.
However, that is exactly what happened. The book series is just now wrapping up after 13 novels, but "True Blood," the beloved television version of Sookie Stackhouse's adventures with all types of supernatural creatures, is still going strong. Gary Sinise will be where most people now expect him to be on Memorial Day weekend.
With war veteran Lt. Dan in the Oscar-winning 1994 movie "Forrest Gump" among his most famous roles, the "CSI: NY" star rejoins longtime friend and fellow CBS personality Joe Mantegna ("Criminal Minds") in Washington, D.C., to host PBS' telecast of the National Memorial Day Concert for the seventh consecutive year Sunday (May 27).
"Every year, they have it so well-organized," Sinise tells Zap2it. "Joe and I know our place, and we've been through the staging and the various aspects of it, so we just fall into it and it all comes together in the end."
Among other performers slated to appear in the event on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol: Oscar winner Ellen Burstyn; Vietnam War veteran and four-time Emmy winner Dennis Franz, in his first major television appearance since "NYPD Blue...

In Story 1, a bride dies at her wedding after dead doves fall to the floor. Mac (Gary Sinise) asks if anyone is superstitious here as it's bad luck for birds to fly indoors. Mac: "It could happen to you, you know." Danny: "What marriage?" Mac: "Love." Danny: "Don't even say stuff like that Mac, it's not even funny." Well someone found it funny and appealing since Danny (Carmine Giovinazzo) did find love and marriage, but sadly most of us thought with the wrong woman. Mac notices redness in her eye, caused by external injuries or allergies. She has a slight redness on her skin and Mac thinks she's displaying symptoms of chemical exposure. Mac: "Two dead doves, one dead bride, looks like foul play to me." Ahh so bad you'd think Stella (Melina Kanakaredes) thought of it! Det Kylie Macca (Kelly Hu) returns to investigate the case and has a comment to make,...

The Bad Guy is always the best character in a movie. Hans Gruber, Darth Vader and Gollum are all far more fun than their heroic counterparts, and Anthony Hopkins manages to steal the show in Silence of the Lambs with barely ten minutes of screen time. We all love to hate a villain, and the best baddies are remembered long after they’ve been rightfully dispatched (or not!).
Occasionally, a villain comes along that shocks and horrifies us because they are played by someone we were fooled into thinking was one of us, one of the Good Guys! These baddies are the most effective of all, because they get us where we live. We open our doors to them and invite them in...

Sela Ward didn't have much to go on when she was offered "CSI: NY," but one factor made all the difference: Gary Sinise.
The Emmy winner for both "Sisters" and "Once and Again" returns to series work when she joins the CBS crime drama in its seventh-season premiere Friday, Sept. 24. Replacing Melina Kanakaredes -- who opted out of the show -- Ward is creating a fresh character as forensics detective Jo Danville, giving her lots of interaction with Sinise's alter ego Mac Taylor.
And that's something Ward couldn't resist.
The actress has fond memories of the time she and Sinise shared on the award circuit in the mid-'90s when they were winning honors for cable-movie biographies, she for Lifetime's "Almost Golden: The Jessica Savitch Story" and he for HBO's "Truman."
"We were seated next to each other several times," Ward tells Zap2it, "and I kept thinking, 'This is the neatest guy.

Gary Sinise is in new co-star Sela Ward's company for the upcoming season of "CSI: NY," but it isn't the first time.
With location filming in New York set for next week, production is well under way on the CBS drama's seventh year, which launches in the series' new Friday slot Sept. 24. While investigating a murder inside the crime lab itself, Sinise's Detective Mac Taylor welcomes forensics sleuth Jo Danville (Ward), the replacement for Stella Bonasera with the departure of founding cast member Melina Kanakaredes.
The arrival of "Once and Again" and "Sisters" Emmy winner Ward has given Sinise, who's also a producer on "CSI: NY," a pleasant reunion. "I met her once, back in the '90s, when we were on the award-show circuit," he tells Zap2it. "I was being nominated for (the HBO film) 'Truman,' and she also was in the TV-movie category for...
