Technically, it's an alternate universe. In the real world, Kawamori had very publicly moved on from Macross, and he and Studio Nue were engaged in other projects. Big West and Bandai wanted something to celebrate 10 years of the franchise, though, and created the Macross II OAV without Kawamori's input. Once Kawamori came back to doing Macross productions with both "Macross 7" and "Macross Plus" in 1994, it became apparent that there was going to be a massive continuity problem as both Macross 7 explicitly and Macross II obliquely seemed to point towards a central mystery of the first Macross series: The identity and origins of the "Supervision Army" that the Zentradi were fighting, and from whence the Macross itself came. To resolve the situation, Kawamori and Big West agreed to place the events of Macross II in an alternate universe that followed from another, unseen (except in the Macross universe) fictional version of "Macross: Do You Remember Love."
