After the heart-stopping conclusion of The Walking Dead‘s sixth season finale last week, the second season premiere of Fear the Walking Dead might have felt like an episode of The Love Boat by comparison.

Do you guys remember Watcher in the Woods? It was a 1980 teen horror movie that was on Disney Channel a lot back in the day. It was about late-career Bette Davis’s daughter Karen and she got trapped in a mirror or some shit during an eclipse and Bette Davis wandered around the woods with her wrinkles and bug eyes and palpable bitterness and she just frightened a generation of children (including a very young Kyle Richards, who co-starred) with her unexplained menace. That, in a nut shell, is what happened when Ramona Singer went to the Berkshires.Yes, everything on the Real Earthworms of a Live Bait Shack Somewhere Along the Road of Route 118 goes down when the ladies are away from home, so you know it is going to get real when Heather invites everyone to her house in the Berkshires. 17. Home Invasion
The true sense of urgency in “Claimed” is reserved for the scenes with Rick and the gang of would-be-rapists and murderers invading the house. Seith Mann does a stellar job sustaining the tension in these scenes, as Rick tiptoes from room to room in search of either a weapon or an escape route.
16. Living Dead Doll House
“Claimed” features some memorable moments shared between Carl and Michonne who confesses bits and pieces of her former life to Carl, such as the former existence of her then-three-year-old son, Andre Anthony. There’s plenty of tension to be found in the house-clearing scenes as well, most notably the images of a family, laid out post-execution style in a pristine child’s bedroom. It’s also worth noting that the painting Michonne finds in the house, is a portrait of Mary, who we later meet at Terminus.

The Walking Dead, after focusing solely on Rick (Andrew Lincoln) Carl (Chandler Riggs) and Michonne (Danai Gurira) last week, caught up with a number of other former prison inhabitants in Sunday’s “Inmates.”
'The Walking Dead' Recap
Beth’s (Emily Kinney) voice narrates the beginning of the episode as she and Daryl (Norman Reedus) sprint away from the zombie-infested prison. She’s reading a journal entry of hers from the early days at the prison, when they were all filled with optimism. As she speaks of hope, a new life and a new permanent home, in the present, she and Daryl are winded on their backs in a field after barely escaping the prison with their lives.
Beth wants to do what her father would have done, search for more survivors at her own peril. Though Daryl is initially hesitant, he agrees to help her try to pick up some tracks.

The Walking Dead has received criticism and a plethora of groans for its dependence on heavy character development, which is usually accompanied with a tragically beautiful indie soundtrack or Beth's singing.
In season four, The Governor is re-introduced. The episode, "Live Bait," seemed more like a music video featuring solo artist, Philip Blake. I don't even recall any walkers in that episode, I just remember thinking, "Is this the part where The Governor is redeemed? He is going to start a new life and abandon his psycho alter-ego?" It was a very evocative episode, even though it failed to have us at the edges of our seats.

The Walking Dead returned on Sunday night with “After,” an episode that offered insight into the relationships between Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Carl (Chandler Riggs), and Michonne (Danai Gurira) and her faith in the aftermath of the Governor’s destruction of the prison.
'The Walking Dead' Recap
Watching the zombies overtaking the prison, Michonne takes a couple down before catching sight of zombie Hershel. Unsettled, Michonne forces herself to ram her sword through his head. Odd List Den Of Geek 20 Dec 2013 - 07:00
As nominated by Den of Geek writers, here are our favourite individual TV episodes of 2013…

So broad was the range of nominations, we've bumped up the top ten to a top fifteen this year, and included a bonus extra list at the end of every programme that appeared on the writers' lists of personal favourites.

There is an embarrassment of horror riches on TV these days. In some ways, that makes it easier to choose ten best episodes, because you have a ton of options to choose from. In other ways, it makes it more difficult because there are so many options to choose from, and you have to sift through the bad (like Under the Dome and the disappointing final season of Dexter) to get to the good. Last year a fair amount of series made my list; this year, I limited it to an episode or two. Sometimes that is because I thought a season as a whole was not worthy of being “best of;” sometimes it is because the whole season was good, but there was one or two episodes that really stood out.

*there are spoilers here. Director: Ernest R. Dickerson. Writers: Robert Kirkman and Seth Hoffman. Cast: Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Steven Yeun, Lauren Cohan, Chandler Riggs and Danai Gurira. The mid-season finale for "The Walking Dead," titled "Too Far Gone," blew one watcher's expectations away. A conflict was coming as set up in previous Governor (David Morrissey) focused episodes: "Live Bait" and "Dead Weight." That contest involved ownership of the prison. Here, the climax of seven episodes came to a head and some characters did not survive. Herschel's (Scott Wilson) time was limited and so was the Governor's. These two characters and several more minor characters breathed their last, in this exciting showing. Plot elements were action focused, which narrowed the story but spread out the survivors. Where does that leave Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and everyone now? Many of "The Walking Dead" fans might be asking these types of questions. This episode effectively created a.

The Walking Dead, Season 4, Episode 8: “Too Far Gone”

I rarely bring up the Walking Dead comic book within my reviews, but this week I deem it necessary. That said, I won’t spoil any future events from the comic series; instead I will point out a few differences between the original source material and the television show, in order to prove a point.

The Walking Dead season 4 brings heavy action with its midseason finale “Too Far Gone”. Updated: Yeah, it’s a little slow. Normally that’s a deal-breaker. If I have to choose between character development or story momentum, I’ll take “stuff happening.” This season I finally quit HBO’s Boardwalk Empire after the sad-trombone conclusion of too many sluggish episodes that left me shouting at the TV: “Don’t just end! Give me a reason to watch next week!”
Yet what happened this fall on The Walking Dead has been pretty remarkable. The show’s latest showrunner Scott Gimple has taken a series that’s been a rather disposable fun pulp-viewing experience for the...

Review Ron Hogan 25 Nov 2013 - 06:39
Spoilers ahead in Ron's latest review of The Walking Dead as the Governor is back in full force...
This review contains spoilers.
4.7 Dead Weight
The Walking Dead routinely indulges in a game of “What would you do...” with its viewers. Specifically, what would you do to survive in a post-apocalyptic scenario? What would you do if you knew one of the people in your group killed two sick, dying folks who might have been spreading plague around? What would you do if you found two women and a little girl hiding in an apartment building? What would you do to keep your loved ones safe? What would you do to keep yourself safe?
Given the past actions of Philip Blake, The Governor, Brian, whatever you want to call him, we know what he'll do to keep his family safe, and that's pretty much anything.

The Walking Dead, Season 4, Episode 7: “Dead Weight”
Directed by Jeremy Podeswa
Written by Curtis Gwinn
Airs Sundays at 9pm Et on AMC
The penultimate episode of The Walking Dead season 4 proves that zombies have a limit when it comes to serving as entertainment for show-runners who continue lurching slowly down a path already worn out.
This week on The Walking Dead, Martinez sums up the theme of season four when saying, “There are some things you don’t come back from. You either live with them, or you don’t.” As hard as the writers try, season four can’t help but recycle ideas from the past – as if the writing staff themselves, are caught in a viscous cycle, desperately trying to find a way out. Scott M. Gimple and his team have no doubt done a fabulous job establishing characters (both new and old), introducing a new threat,...

A quick review of tonight's "The Walking Dead" coming up just as soon as I can't tell if you're winking or blinking... Last week, I wrote that my opinion of "Live Bait" would ultimately depend on what the show did with the Governor afterwards. By the end of "Dead Weight," I had my answer, and it wasn't a good one. Basically, we spent last week watching a catatonic Governor not to build him up into more nuanced and possibly sympathetic character, but to restore him to being the same erratic, homicidal whackjob he was when last he was here. I get...

After the surprising and somewhat disturbing turn "The Walking Dead" made in last week's "Live Bait," the AMC series had much poorer execution in delivering the transformation of the Governor 2.0. Mr. Brian Harriet is no more, once again reverting to his murderous, the-ends-justify-the-means Woodbury mentality when he comes across Martinez's new camp.
It's establishing from the opening scene in "Dead Weight" that the Governor does not consider himself to be a good man. The title becomes literal as he, seemingly unwittingly, weeds out the dead weight from Martinez's camp. Starting with Martinez himself and then offing good-hearted Pete ("Dollhouse's" Enver Gjokaj), the Governor starts to turn this group of survivors into the same Woodbury-style camp he previously ruled.
The message to be taken here seems to be that people can't really change. Just like Rick was forced to relapse into his leadership role, the Governor finds himself pulled back...

The Walking Dead is an immensely popular series. So popular, in fact, that there is a network-sponsored talk show devoted to discussion of each episode alongside podcasts which analyse every minute detail of the show. There are websites and fansites and forums. The show is utterly huge, and not without reason – for the most part, The Walking Dead presents high-quality and engaging content to viewers. Yes, for the most part, it’s a great show.
But it’s not always great. Live Bait, the sixth episode of the fourth season, was probably one of the least compelling outings of the entire show thus far. Lacking every member of the main cast, the episode follows the Governor from his final scene in Season 3. As the Governor was not the most well-received character with the audience in the first place, an episode that is one hiatus and half a season away from...

After dominating so much of Season three, The Governor was a no show in the first five episodes of The Walking Dead’s fourth season. The last time we saw him, he was mowing down his own followers with a machine gun before escaping with his two favourite henchmen, Martinez, and Shumpert. We all knew he would eventually come back, but some of us were secretly hoping he wouldn’t return so soon. Unfortunately for everyone, he’s back, and this time the writers have dedicated an entire episode to his character. Guest Sean Colletti joins Kate and Ricky to discuss, what might be the most divisive episode of the series yet.

Here's our blow-by-blow recap of "The Walking Dead" Season 4, Episode 406, "Live Bait," which followed the journey of The Governor starting at the end of Season 3 (and before he was standing outside the prison in last week's episode):

Well, well. Maybe ol’ Hershel is right after all and you really can come back from the bad things that happen to you here in the walker-pocalypse. Because of all the gents I expected to remain the epitome of ice-blooded, comrade-killing evil, Philip “The Governor” Blake is it. And yet, there he was, the most sinister guy we’ve yet to encounter on The Walking Dead, broken, abandoned and facedown in the street before the vision of a little girl in a window brought him back to his feet and back to life as a — gulp! — lion-hearted family protector […]

Its nice to see The Governor back. Not because hes a swell guy or anything but because hes at this point the most imposing villain that Rick and his crew have come face to face with. Live Bait is the latest mental rollercoaster in the world of The Walking Dead. And it all opens with a look at the aforementioned Governor. We see some flashback shots that indicate The Governor may have completely destroyed Woodbury. So much for a fine alternative to the prison eh...

It took six episodes, but the Governor finally picked up where he left off at the end of last season. Sorta. (Not counting that quick glimpse at the end of episode 5.) Last night’s “Live Bait” found the eyepatch-wearing baddie without an army (or, er, the two guys he didn’t massacre at the end of last season) and without purpose. Cue: the Governor has become … the walking dead! Well, not literally, but definitely figuratively. After blazing what’s left of Woodbury, the Gov heads off … somewhere. He eventually stumbles across the beautiful Audrey Marie Anderson (“The Unit”, “Arrow”), who is holing up with her gun-toting sister, little daughter, and wheezing pops inside an apartment. They have apparently been there all this time, and don’t even know that you need to shoot the walkers in the head to kill them. Cue: redemption time for the Gov! Long on knowing...

(Spoiler alert: Maybe don’t read this if you still plan to watch Sunday’s “Walking Dead.”) “The Walking Dead” has had two great episodes in a row, and on Sunday the show took a big, welcome turn by focusing for the first time entirely on The Governor. The Governor, now calling himself Brian, is a rich enough character that “Walking Dead” creator Robert Kirkman and Jay Bonansinga have written three novels about him as companions to the show and Kirkman’s excellent comics. Sunday’s episode, “Live Bait,” borrowed heavily from the first of those novels, 2011′s “Rise of The Governor,...

“Live Bait” is such a strange episode to write about simply based on the way it ends. It comes down to it only being half a story. When, last week, we saw a glimpse of the Governor watching the prison, it was a hint that we were finally going to learn what he’d been up to over the last few months. However, the new episode doesn’t manage to catch up to where the rest of the season is chronologically, which means we still don’t know the full story of the Governor post-Season 3. Without knowing where “Live Bait” is leading us, I can’t properly say whether or not the Governor’s storyline is working or not because I just don’t know. This is all backstory for the time being. However, while I may not be able to comment on where this is all going, I can...

Director: Michael Uppendahl. Writers: Robert Kirkman and Nichole Beattie. Cast: David Morrissey, Audrey Marie Anderson, Travis Love, Alanna Masterson and Meyrick Murphy. Everyone's favourite villain is back on "The Walking Dead!" the Governor (David Morrissey) aka Brian Harriet is looking a little grizzled since Seas. 3. In Epis. 6 of Seas. 4, The Governor is looking more like a homeless man than a looming threat. However, this episode, titled "Live Bait," showed that the Governor is more than just a killer. He is also making new friends and reuniting with old ones. What is the Governor up to and what does he have in store for Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and the survivors at the prison? Some of these questions have been touched upon in previous episodes and reviews; in this episode, the Governor is simply getting back on his feet. The episode began with the Governor leaving behind the victims of Woodbury. Martinez...

This week's The Walking Dead features a very welcome return for one character. Here's Ron's spoiler-filled review...
This review contains spoilers.
4.6 Live Bait
I'm not sure what the purpose is behind having a Governor-centric episode in which Philip actually behaves like a reasonable, decent, kind-hearted person—if a bit damaged—and helps a family get out of their apartment and into the broader world of the zombie apocalypse. Given last week's reveal of his presence hanging outside the prison and the way he seems to have some enmity towards the prison group that toppled his miniature empire as revealed during his chess game talk, it seems like the Governor will continue to be a villain. However, he also risks his life to bring oxygen back to an old man dying of lung cancer, hooks up with a surprisingly clean nurse, and becomes a father...

The Walking Dead, Season 4, Episode 6: “Live Bait”
Directed by Michael Uppendahl
Written by Nichole Beattie
Airs Sundays at 9pm Et on AMC
Anyone who listens to our Walking Dead podcast has heard me comment on how much I would like to see the writers of the Walking Dead take bigger risks. Just last week I mentioned how I’d love to see an entire episode that doesn’t feature Rick and the gang. I also stated how much I’d like to see more flashbacks featured on the show. That said, I also made it very clear, that I wasn’t necessarily happy with the sudden return of The Governor in the final moments of last week’s fifth instalment, “Internment“. The sixth episode of season four titled “Live Bait,” gives me everything I asked for, but there is one problem: it revolves entirely around the one-eyed villain from season three,...

A review of tonight's "The Walking Dead" coming up just as soon as I have enough ammuniition to kill you every day for the next three years... "Live Bait" wasn't a particularly exciting episode of "The Walking Dead," nor an especially subtle one in the way it beat us over the head with the parallels between the Governor's dead little girl and the live one standing in front of him. But it may have been a necessary one, depending on what sort of long-term plans Scott Gimple has for the character. The Governor from the second half of season 3 is...

All season it's been known that the Governor was going to return on "The Walking Dead," but we'd be lying if we said we thought it was going to be like this. Even with Scott Gimple and Robert Kirkman's warnings that the Governor would be a changed man in Season 4, his appearance at the Prison at the end of "Internment" still seemed to be foreboding.
But maybe he won't be the bringer of death and destruction that fans were expecting. "The Walking Dead" has continuously been exploring the idea of change in Season 4, and the Governor's storyline seems to be a part of that. Can someone walk away from evil, from darkness and from the worst parts of themselves in order to live a renewed and good life? Rick is certainly trying, though he's been struggling to find balance with his new peaceful self and the Prison's need for violence.

After five episodes, it looks like the prison group finally has a handle on the new threat. Unfortunately for them, a certain character makes a return when they’re at their weakest. Tonight’s episode of The Walking Dead takes the story in a new direction and you can get a sneak peek before it airs with our preview videos and photo gallery.
“In the highly anticipated new season, we find Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and the group fostering a thriving community in the safe haven of the prison. Sadly, in this brutal world, happiness is short-lived and walkers and outside threats are no match for danger brewing inside the fences. The group’s home and new way of life will be thoroughly tested, and their struggle to survive has never been so perilous. Season 4 also introduces several new characters including Bob Stookey (Lawrence Gilliard Jr., The Wire).”

In last week's episode, Hershel risked his life to keep his sick patients from (a) dying and (b) giving up hope. After what seemed like an eternity, in which both Glenn and Sasha almost died, Daryl's group finally returned to the prison with the medical supplies Hershel needed to save his patients. Rick told Maggie and Hershel what happened with Carol, but put off having that conversation with Daryl. And The Governor was spotted looking at the prison like it was the last parachute in a crashing plane.
In this week's episode, "Live Bait," we learn more about what the Governor has been up to for the past few months and meet several new characters who will probably be dead by mid-season. Read on to find out if this week's episode of The Walking Dead can deliver that mix of sweet zombie action and rich character development we crave.

Given the immense popularity of "The Walking Dead," a spin-off series was only a matter of time. IGN caught up with creator Robert Kirkman, who shed a bit of light on what to expect once it arrives.
Kirkman - who is shepherding the spin-off along with fellow "The Walking Dead" executive producers Gale Anne Hurd and David Alpert - confirmed that the new series will be set in a “different location” and feature “completely different people,” adding, “It definitely won’t be set in Georgia… It’s important to us that this show exists on its own. The spin-off has to be a show worthy of existing, or else we’ve all sold out.”
