They don’t make comedies like they used to anymore, except when they do: Say hello to “No Hard Feelings,” the late ‘90s/early ‘00s-style sex comedy that just got a raunchy red band trailer on Thursday.
Jennifer Lawrence stars as Maddie, a thirtysomething woman from Montauk, Long Island who’s having serious financial troubles. She’s an Uber driver, but her tow truck driver ex-boyfriend (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) took her car because she wasn’t paying her loan. If she doesn’t have a car, she can’t earn money, and she’ll lose her house. In desperation, she answers a Craigslist ad posted by wealthy helicopter parents (Matthew Broderick and Laura Benanti), who want her to “date” their awkward, virginal 19-year-old son Percy (Andrew Barth Feldman) before he goes off to Princeton in the fall. In exchange, they’ll give her a Buick Regal. Over the course of the summer,...

The reality comedy series “Jury Duty” is an elaborate prank on one normal man, and you’ll want to be in on the joke.
On Tuesday, Amazon released a trailer for the series, which is coming to the free ad-supported service Freevee on April 7. It’s a “docu-comedy” following Ronald Gladden, a solar contractor from San Diego who thinks he’s taking part in a documentary about an American jury trial, from juror selection through verdict. In reality, it’s all fake, every other participant is an actor, and everything that happens is carefully scripted to make him feel like he’s taking crazy pills.
“Jury Duty” was created by “The Office” veterans Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky. “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” and “Who Is America?” producer Todd Schulman is an EP. Cody Heller (“Dummy”) is the showrunner, and Jake Szymanski (“The Package”) is the director.

The creative minds behind The Office set their new docu-style comedy in the courtroom. Amazon Freevee’s Jury Duty, which just released a trailer, focuses on 12 jurors…but only one doesn’t realize he’s not sitting on a real jury.
“Jury Duty originated with a question: Was it possible to make a sitcom like The Office about a trial, populate it with brilliant comedic performers, and put a real person at the center of the show who doesn’t realize he’s surrounded by actors?” said executive producer Todd Schulman (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm). “We honestly had no idea, but when we pitched it to Freevee we pretended like it was a sure thing. Thank God we pulled it off.”
The Office‘s Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky created the series and serve as executive producers. David Bernad (The White Lotus), Ruben Fleischer (Superstore), Nicholas Hatton (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm), Cody Heller...

James Marsden is serving on a jury in his latest TV role. Amazon Freevee has unveiled the trailer and announced the premiere date for the upcoming docu-style comedy Jury Duty. The first four episodes of the series, starring Marsden as an alternate version of himself, will drop on Friday, April 7. Two new episodes will then be released until the finale on April 21. Jury Duty chronicles the inner workings of an American jury trial. The show has a major twist in that one particular juror, Ronald Gladden, a solar contractor from San Diego, CA, is a real-life member of the public, who has no idea he is taking part in a fake trial and is surrounded by actors. Everything that happens, both inside and out of the courtroom, is carefully planned. But as far as Gladden is concerned it’s a real court case. Early on in the show Marsden even...

“Jury Duty,” the upcoming docu-style comedy series starring James Marsden as himself, explores truths stranger than fiction when one unsuspecting juror is put in a courtroom of actors for a fake case and a faker documentary.
Marsden leads the “Truman Show”-style misadventure, playing a version of himself who tries – and fails – to get out of his civic duty when the judge fails to recognize him as a public figure. In the first trailer for the Amazon Freevee series, which dropped Tuesday, other characters are seen pushing the envelope of what’s acceptable behavior in the literal court of law – while real-life juror Ronald Gladden goes about his duty being none the wiser that everything is staged.
Coming from the producers of “The Office,” “The White Lotus” and “Bad Trip,” “Jury Duty” is just the latest comedy series to blend genres of reality and scripted, following in the steps of Sacha Baron Cohen,...

ABC, CBS, NBC & Fox Extend Pilot Cast Options; ‘Jury Duty’ Releases Actors But Remains In Contention
Back in May and June, the broadcast networks made decisions on their pilots that had been grounded by the coronavirus pandemic. Some projects went straight to series, some pilots were rolled, some were passed on, and the rest got commitments to film in 2020 when safety conditions allow. Because pilot cast options traditionally expire on June 30, the options on the actors from pilots earmarked for production were extended through September 30.
Three months later, only one pilot from that list has been shot, as far as I know: NBC’s comedy Night School. The networks were faced with the same dilemma and, overwhelmingly, asked the studios to extend the options on the pilots. I hear the length of the extensions vary project by project, with most actors secured through June 2021, and some pilots going for a hold through December 2020.
The only pilot whose cast was not extended further is CBS comedy Jury Duty,...

Hawaii Five-0 may be about to wrap up its 10 season run but one cast member has already lined up their return to the small screen.
Meaghan Rath has been added to the cast of CBS comedy pilot Jury Duty, which comes from 9Jkl co-creator Dana Klein and writer Stephanie Darrow.
Rath will appear opposite the previously cast Jack Cutmore-Scott for the potential series which follows a group of jurors being sequestered together until they reach a verdict.
Unfortunately for them, they can't even agree on what to eat. It's a convincing hook for a series, but it doesn't scream longevity.
According to Deadline, Rath is playing Jen, a "sarcastic, adorably neurotic and a little controlling" book editor.
Rath has been a part of the Hawaii Five-0 cast for three seasons, but CBS recently announced the series would wrap up after 10 seasons this April.

“Jury Duty” follows a group of jurors who are all sequestered together until they can agree on a verdict, though they can’t even agree on lunch. Rath will star as Jen, described as sarcastic, adorably neurotic, and a little controlling. Jen is a successful book editor who is high maintenance, but thinks she’s low maintenance. She feels like the last single girl in the world because all of her friends are married with kids.

Hey, "Bull" fans. It is with great sorrow that we must inform you guys of some bad news in this article. Your favorite drama is apparently on a bit of a hiatus. So, CBS will not be airing the next, new episode 11 of Bull's current season 4 tonight, December 23, 2019. That's right, guys. It sucks, but not as much as it could suck. You see, Bull's break is way more shorter than a lot of other shows we had to report on. You guys can expect to see the brand new episode 11 hit the airwaves on Monday night, January 6, 2020 in its usual 9 pm central standard time slot on CBS of course. So, you will certainly want to write that really important date down somewhere. What will CBS air in place of "Bull" while it's away? Well, they're not really going to replace Bull, but rather they will just air repeat episodes of Bull.

Not even past presidents can avoid being called in for jury duty.
Former President Barack Obama honored his civic obligations in Chicago on Wednesday morning, reporting for jury duty at the Windy City’s Daley Center with his Secret Service detail in tow.
Earlier, Obama was seen leaving his home in Chicago’s Kenwood neighborhood with a motorcade of black SUVs, CNN reported. After he arrived at the Daley Center, Obama shook hands with fellow would-be jurors and autographed copies of his books.
The former president was ultimately dismissed without having to serve on a jury, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Buyers return to Cannes like swallows to the Capistranos, but this year they’ll find a hostile landscape. Too many buyers, too few titles, and streaming-service disruptors are driving up prices all the while, making North American prebuys increasingly necessary.
That’s hazardous terrain: Witness the Weinstein Company’s $6 million bid for transgender drama “3 Generations” (aka “After Ray”). Two years later, after a title change and poor reviews on and off the festival circuit, the drama starring Elle Fanning and Susan Sarandon finally received a May 5 release. Total domestic gross to date: $46,421.
That was in 2015, the last year that TWC held its then-annual dog-and-pony show for buyers and press at the Majestic Hotel. This year, like the last, they’ll hold court on their yacht, which also serves as their offices — still tony, but on a budget; it’s a lot less expensive than that prime Croissette real estate. Meanwhile,...

Ben Kingsley is set to star in “Death of an Author,” the first adaptation of the upcoming planned “Intrigo” trilogy of novels by international best-selling Swedish author Hakan Nesser. Benno Fürmann (“North Face”) and Tuva Novotny (“Jalla, Jalla”) will co-star alongside Kingsley in the first of three films that will be helmed by “The Girl Who Played with Fire” director Daniel Alfredson.
The titles of the three films will be “Death of an Author,” “Samaria” and “Dear Agnes.” They will be set in an undefined country somewhere in northern Europe, where many of Nesser’s stories have been set. The three films will share the same psychology and narrative structure, with plots that include some sort of escape with dark hidden secrets destined to surface, as well as guilt, revenge and atonement.

Taylor Swift may not have attended the MTV Video Music Awards, but she's still attending to very important matters - namely, jury duty. While serving her civic duty in Nashville, Tennessee, Swift took a selfie with a fellow juror (and fan), who officially had the best time anyone has ever had on jury duty. Twitter user Madison Lewis posted the photo of her mom and Swift beaming, writing, "My mom just casually has jury duty with Taylor Swift!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" And all 16 exclamation points are totally justified in this instance. Lewis tells People that Swift, 26, was very friendly with the fellow jurors - her mom included.

Abe Vigoda, a veteran character actor best known for roles in "The Godfather" and sitcom "Barney Miller," has died. He was 94.
Vigoda, who passed away in New Jersey of natural causes, became known for his signature hangdog appearance, and was the repeated target of death hoaxes frequently touting his demise. That odd occurrence became a running joke throughout the latter half of his career.
The then-middle-aged actor was all but unknown when he landed the role of Tessio in 1972's "The Godfather," a part he reprised as part of a flashback in "The Godfather Part II" in 1974. He went on to appear in film such as "The Don Is Dead," "Newman's Law," "The Cheap Detective," "Joe Versus the Volcano," and "Jury Duty."
But television took up much of the rest of Vigoda's career, where he shone as always-on-the-verge-of-retiring Detective Phil Fish on beloved comedy series "Barney Miller." The character...

This week’s episode of New Girl is pretty much an excuse to let Jake Johnson and Hannah Simone show off their comedic chops, as both actors are never better than when Nick and Cece are angry. And while the hilarious scenes Nick and Cece have together are enough on their own to make this episode an incredibly entertaining installment, the relatability and honesty of the situation they find themselves in solidifies “Jury Duty” New Girl‘s best episode of Season 5 yet. In a way, with Schmidt and Cece getting engaged, New Girl has the opportunity to re-do a lot of the roommate stories

Tina Fey and her trusty ol' improv buddy Amy Poehler hosted "SNL" last weekend for the hell of it. It was great. Probably the best episode of the season. And it got us thinking: How many pricelessly hilarious moments has Tina Fey had? The answer is quite high. So let's simplify and pick Tina Fey's 20 funniest moments. 20. Slurring with Steve Carell in "Date Night" "Date Night" was a surprisingly weird movie, but it featured a couple of great Tina gags: Her rapport with Mark Wahlberg was hilarious, and her exasperated scenes with Steve Carell gave us a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see two comic greats ham it up together. 19. "Meet Your Second Wife" Too real? Maybe. This past weekend, Tina and Amy hosted an "SNL" game show that acquainted us with the mysterious, youth-oriented nature of second wives. 18. Any of her Letterman appearances Tina's camaraderie with David Letterman always provided cool,...

Anyone else starting to see a pattern in these final Sons of Anarchy episodes?
Following Bobby’s unfortunate capture (and loss of an eyeball) in last week’s installment, Tuesday’s hour found Jax & Co. going through very similar motions: Trying and failing to gain the upper hand on an enemy, getting brutally violent when things don’t go according to plan and — after receiving another body part of Bobby’s in a package from Moses Cartwright — silently realizing just how deep this rabbit hole goes.

In the spirit of Big Brother ’s Sweet 16 season, quite a few milestones were reached on Wednesday’s live finale.
For one, the season ender resulted in a rare Final Two duo that had been planning this moment since the very beginning. Big Brother is a long game — at 97 days, this season clocks in at the longest ever — and with so many variables at play, it’s not often that a Final Two deal is seen through, making Derrick and Cody’s accomplishment even more impressive.
But the 90-minute broadcast was full of much, much more than Derrick’s ultimate victory.

Exclusive: Showtime has picked up Pauly Shore’s revealing road documentary Pauly Shore Stands Alone and slated it to air December 4. The feature-length film directed by and starring Shore tracks the popular ’90s actor and comedian as he embarks on a stand-up tour across the Midwest while grappling with aging, fading fame and his relationship with his mother, Comedy Store founder Mitzi Shore, who has Parkinson’s. Unlike his 2003 directing debut Pauly Shore Is Dead, the new documentary peels back the curtain on the raw, more serious side of Shore’s life on the road. (Watch the trailer above.)

On Wednesday I drew a picture of James Bond on a Banana and posted it online.
Nathaniel R. "Bond on Banana" 2014. Mixed Media on Fruit, 9"x1½"
I have no explanation for this other than the perfect storm / terrible timing of innate online playfulness fused with genuine insanity and egged on by dread over Jury Duty to commence the following morning. Jury Duty is so boring (you just sit in a very official dull room in monotony waiting for your name to be called for 16 hours! I'm still there right now as you read this.) that on Wednesday I felt something akin to complete preemptive desperation to amuse myself. So when The Incredible Suit (whose blog I've always loved) promised he'd review it if someone drew Bond on a Banana, I did.
He kept his promise and I am left frightened at how deeply burrowed Daniel Craig in a blue speedo must be in my psyche.

There is still a lot to come in "Bones" Season 9. Thanks to executive producer Stephen Nathan, we now know a lot of what can be expected. Christopher Pelant will return (even though he's dead). The team will have to face the Ghost Killer, a new foe. Hodgins will find out about his family. A squintern will find romance.
Freddie Prinze Jr. is even coming back!
Keep reading for details on these "Bones" spoilers.
Pelant is back? Really?
It's hard to kill a super villain on TV. Even though the audience saw Christopher Pelant (Andrew Leeds) die on-camera, finally ending the tech genius' murderous reign of terror, he will still be back, according to a report from TVLine.
How does that work? Nathan stayed cryptic on that front. "He'll be back in the flesh, but somewhat ethereal in the show," the "Bones" producer said.
Is this a ghost? A computer-generated hologram?...

Deadline revealed exclusively in August that DreamWorks will remake the Japanese film Japanese film Like Father, Like Son (Soshite Chichi Ni Naru), and for some reason the trades are trumpeting it as a story a month later after the deal closed between the studio and Fuji TV. This is the film that got on the studio’s radar after DreamWorks principal Steven Spielberg saw the Hirozaku Kore-Eda-directed drama when it screened at the Cannes Film Festival in May while he headed the jury. The pic received the Prix du Jury prize there. I had heard originally that Spielberg wanted to direct, but studio insiders denied that last month. In the film, an upper middle class career-oriented couple push their 6-year-old son to succeed in school as hard as they push themselves. They are shocked to discover from the hospital where the baby was born that a mistake was made, and...

Giving a movie the name that it deserves is one of the most crucial stages in the life of a motion picture – can you imagine how many people would have turned up to see 12 Angry Men had it been called Jury Duty? Or what about if Star Wars had ended up as Droids? I made both of those up, of course, but my point stands: a movie lives and dies by its title. Make it too far out or wacky and people will avoid it out of fear. Make it too generic, bland or unforgettable, and you risk people not bothering at all. Many a good movie has flopped due to an ill-judged title, after all.
You’ll notice, then, that pretty much all of the movies considered to be the best or greatest of all-time have one thing in common – brilliant titles. Titles that, when you hear them, you...
