The 1990s were the heyday for kid-led sports movies, with films like "The Big Green," "The Sandlot," "Little Giants," "Ladybugs," "Air Bud," "Little Big League," "Angels in the Outfield," and "Rookie of the Year" becoming household favorites, but only one* became a certified cultural phenomenon. Disney's "The Mighty Ducks" spawned a trilogy of films, an animated television series, a live-action sequel television series, and a real-life National Hockey League hockey team. The feature writing debut of Steve Brill, "The Mighty Ducks" nabbed Stephen...

A lot of the movies I loved when I was a kid were not cartoons. Disney staples like Goofy Movie, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, and Toy Story were all significant parts of my life that came out right when I was the target audience. Any claim to the contrary is a lie. However, I also enjoyed live-action fares like Sandlot, A Summer Story, The Big Green, Heavyweights, and other children’s entertainment that didn’t need talking animals or IPs attached to them. Recently, I’ve been thinking a lot about how movies like this no longer exist. A few minutes into Space Jam: A New Legacy, I realized how much I enjoyed

Evelyn Sakash, an Emmy-winning production designer, was found dead at her New York City home on Tuesday. She was 66.
According to the Associated Press, Sakash was “known to be a hoarder” and was found under a pile of garbage. The cause of death is currently unknown, but will be determined by the New York City medical examiner’s office.
Sakash was found by her sister and a cleaning crew, who were hired to clear out Sakash’s home and look for her. She had previously been reported missing and was last seen alive on Sept. 30, 2020.
Sakash was a production designer and art director, having worked on films like 1990’s “Mermaids” and 2014’s “Still Alice.” In 2003, Sakash took home a Daytime Emmy for art direction for the children’s series “Between the Lions.” According to Sakash’s IMDb page, she first worked as an art director on two episodes of the...

Get this: a new series based on an existing film franchise is hitting a streaming service this month. Shocking, right? With the streaming wars in full effect and beloved, existing intellectual property coveted by media conglomerates more than ever, it’s safe to assume that reboots, reimaginings, and retreads will be hitting Netflix, HBO Max, and Disney+ until the end of time. Everything old is new again. And again. And again. And again.
Disney deciding to dust off The Mighty Ducks franchise is not the least bit surprising. If anything, it’s surprising that a reboot has taken this long. Perhaps the most well-remembered of the ‘90s underdog sports movies geared at kids, The Mighty Ducks followed a familiar format of a disinterested coach (played by Emilio Estevez) leading a group of ragtag kids that he eventually embraces and teaches to win. Unlike the other movies listed above, the success...

If you grew up during the 90s, you probably have fond memories of Patrick Renna from his role in the 1993 movie, The Sandlot. Now considered a classic, the movie was Renna’s film debut. Two years later, he had a main role in another popular 90s film, The Big Green. However, after a few other appearances many assumed that Renna walked away from the spotlight. That isn’t true though, he has continued to act throughout the years and had recurring roles in shows like The X-Files and Boston Legal. Although he is also working on other ventures now, Patrick’s love

If you’re a Disney Plus subscriber, you probably already know how incredible the service’s selection is after less than a year. Nearly every Marvel Cinematic Universe film is already available, and every Star Wars movie and plenty of shows based on the franchise are able to be viewed right now, too. This is all before counting how many of Disney’s very own animated classics exist alongside dozens of popular shows from The Disney Channel. It’s honestly staggering how much content can be watched, but it never stops the company from pouring even more new stuff onto the platform all throughout each month.
This month is no different, of course. A live recording of the wildly famous musical Hamilton has been staying steady on the charts since its release at the start of July, while 90s films like The Big Green and The Mighty Ducks have injected...

July has been off to a great start for Disney Plus, especially with awesome new additions like The Mighty Ducks, The Big Green, and Race to Witch Mountain to get the nostalgia train running. With so many excellent shows and movies already available on the service, it’s always just icing on the cake to get big content drops throughout the month, and that’s exactly what today is bringing.
In fact, included in today’s releases is a special film many have been waiting to see finally join the platform, so you’ll want to load up the app and check it out. Of course, we’re talking about Solo: A Star Wars Story, which focuses on the early life of everyone’s favorite smuggler, Han Solo.

With so many streaming platforms to choose from and all of them having such exceptional collections of content, deciding which ones to subscribe to can be difficult at times. Sure, Netflix is the most popular, but it’s also now losing a lot of fan-favorite Disney and Marvel movies to Disney’s own fairly new service, Disney Plus.
For big fans of the Mouse House’s content, the platform has rapidly become a no-brainer and July’s offerings have been wonderful so far, with such classics as The Mighty Ducks and The Big Green, the often overlooked Race to Witch Mountain, and a recorded version of the revered musical Hamilton.
Speaking of which, after debuting on Friday, Hamilton has made its way comfortably to the very top of Disney Plus’ trending chart with no signs of giving up its spot anytime too soon. This fantastic performance with the principal cast...

With a long weekend now upon us, folks are no doubt going to be seeking out fresh content to dig into and though today – and the next few days – are actually a bit light on new movies and TV shows when it comes to the major streaming services, there’s still some stuff worth checking out.
Of course, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime and HBO Max, in particular, just delivered massive drops to their subscribers on the first of the month, with each platform bringing a ton – and we do mean a ton – of new arrivals. So, it’s understandable that July 3rd, 4th and 5th may be a bit on the light side.
But again, there’s enough here that you should find something to satisfy you. And if you don’t, well, like we just said, July 1st brought with it more than enough to keep you busy.

Streaming services have been doing an excellent job of keeping everyone busy as we all continue quarantining, and Disney Plus has been no exception. June was a particularly strong month for the platform with the additions of huge titles like Tarzan, Tarzan 2 and Avengers: Infinity War.
Meanwhile, July is already shaping up to be fantastic, too, with upcoming drops like the musical Hamilton, animated film Ice Age: Collision Course and classic sports movies like The Mighty Ducks and The Big Green. Of course, when Disney Plus giveth, Disney Plus taketh away, and the start of July means we’ve lost a few awesome films as well that some fans are sure to miss.
One of the biggest losses is Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Johnny Depp reprises his signature role as Jack Sparrow in this fourth installment of the popular franchise that acts as a standalone followup to 2007’s At World’s End.

The movies and shows releasing on streaming platforms lately have been top-tier. Netflix has been getting huge hits like E.T. the Extraterrestrial and The Silence of the Lambs, Hulu scored wonderful titles like A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood and I Am Legend, and Disney Plus has been building and completing its Marvel movie collection. There’s certainly plenty of enrapturing content to watch regardless of what streaming service you regularly use, but Disney’s platform in particular is shaping up to have an exceptional July.

July is shaping up to be an excellent month for every streaming platform. Tons of popular films and shows will be making their way to each service to help mitigate the boredom caused by social distancing, and some of the best of them are coming to Disney Plus on July 3rd. Even better, many of the offerings are classics that will excite those who are seeking out nostalgic experiences.
First of all, any 90s kid is going to be ecstatic to see the arrival of The Big Green and The Mighty Ducks. These two childhood favorites rank among the most popular movies of that decade, and you’d be hard-pressed to find someone around 30-years-old who didn’t watch them as a kid. Both are your typical sports-based films about a failing team who gets a boost from a coach who is willing to push them to be their best,...

Despite only launching in November, Disney Plus has already brought in nearly 55 million subscribers, who’ve been enjoying all of their content hailing from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Star Wars franchise, Pixar, almost their entire back catalogue of animated films and much, much more.
However, it’s fair to say that when it comes to original material, Disney Plus hasn’t been bringing us very much. Sure, The Mandalorian was a major hit, but apart from that, none of their in-house projects have really stirred up any buzz. Unless, of course, you want to count Artemis Fowl, which has been making waves for all the wrong reasons.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like things will be improving on that front anytime soon, either. The Mouse House has just announced what’s headed our way in July and as you can see below, the list is lacking when it comes to buzzy original titles.

I did a double take when I saw the headline myself. Despite only launching a week ago, a not inconsiderable number of titles will be leaving HBO Max at the end of June. Logically, distribution contracts that were already running out weren’t going to stop running out just because Warner launched their new service, so you best get on these quick.
Here’s the list of all the movies leaving HBO Max on June 30th:
The Abyss
Akeelah and the Bee
American Wedding
An Ideal Husband
Arthur
Asylum
The Beverly Hillbillies
The Big Green
Blindspotting

In addition to Shakira Barrera as new wrestler Yolanda and Horatio Sanz's strip club owner Ray (should we start taking bets on whether he'll screw them over in Vegas down the line?) is the tragic character of Cupcake, played by Patrick Renna.
The Britannica superfan, hopeless romantic, and borderline stalker is first introduced in the penultimate episode, "Rosalie." At the end of “The Sandlot,” the narrator explains how each of the kids ended up as each one fades from the screen. Some moved away, Benny the Jet made it to the big leagues, and Squints married Wendy Peffercorn. Earlier, TheWrap explored why some movies will be remembered but “The Sandlot” will never die. But 25 years later, we’ll explore where the film’s actors actually ended up.
Tom Guiry – Scotty Smalls
After making his film debut with “The Sandlot,” Tom Guiry continued to pursue acting and landed roles in “Mystic River,” “The Revenant” and “Black Hawk Down.” He most recently starred in “Wonder Wheel” and “Sollers Point.”
Mike Vitar – Benny “The Jet” Rodriguez
Mike Vitar continued his reputation as a sporty, teen heartthrob by appearing in both “Mighty Ducks” sequels “D2” and “D3.” His last acting role was in 1997 for a show called “Chicago Hope,” at which point he retired and became a firefighter. But in 2015, Vitar was charged with assault and reached a plea deal to avoid time behind bars in 2017.
Chauncey Leopardi – Squints
Leopardi spoke with TheWrap and says he’s keeping busy with a family and some businesses, as well as appearing at events for “The Sandlot” whenever he can. As an actor he’s also starred in “Freaks and Geeks,” “Gilmore Girls” and most recently “Coldwater” in 2013.
Patrick Renna – Ham
Originally from Boston, Patrick Renna still acts. Outside of “The Sandlot,” he had a memorable leading role in “The Big Green” while still young. More recently, he starred in episodes of “Boston Legal,” “Judging Amy” and 2016’s “Fear, Inc.”
Marty York – Yeah-Yeah
In addition to seriously bulking up, Marty York appeared in episodes of “Boy Meets World” and “The Eric Andre Show.”
Brandon Quintin Adams – Kenny DeNunez
Brandon Quintin Adams, also just Brandon Adams, had small roles in other ’90s hits “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” “Sister-Sister” and “Moesha.” He also did a voice for “Kingdom Hearts 2” and has recorded music as a rapper under the name B. Lee.
Grant Gelt – Bertram Grover Weeks
Grant Gelt had a few acting roles after “The Sandlot,” including “Boy Meets World” and “Hey Arnold!,” but he now works as a music manager.
Victor Dimattia – Timmy Timmons
Victor Dimattia went on two direct two short films and appeared in the 2018 indie “Get Married Or Die.”
Shane Obedzinski – Tommy “Repeat” Timmons
Unlike his onscreen counterpart, Shane Obedzinski didn’t directly follow in the footsteps of his onscreen brother. After leaving acting, he opened a pizza shop in Florida, but was glad to join in for the 20th anniversary festivities.
Marley Shelton – Wendy Peffercorn
Marley Shelton, who played the lifeguard all the boys are gaga over in “The Sandlot” Wendy Peffercorn, has starred in “Sin City,” “Planet Terror,” “Never Been Kissed,” “Death Proof,” “Scream 4” and more. She currently stars on the series “Rise” and will next be seen in Dwayne Johnson’s “Rampage.”
Denis Leary – Bill, Scott’s Stepdad
Taking a role as a fairly straight-laced, if imposing stepdad was a departure for the firebrand comedian back in 1993, but he would eventually move into far more dramatic roles on “Rescue Me” and more. And thankfully, he’s still a fan of “The Sandlot.”
Karen Allen – Scott’s Mom
Following “The Sandlot,” Karen Allen would reprise her more famous role as Marion in “Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull.” She most recently starred in “Year by the Sea” in 2016.
James Earl Jones – Mr. Mertle
It’s like he never really left!

Having fulfilled the role of lovable losers for decades now, the Chicago Cubs have a lot of goodwill in their first World Series appearance since 1945. (They also have a one-game deficit to overcome, but let’s try not to think about that.) Among their celebrity fans is Daniel Stern, whom you might recognize as Phil Brickman from “Rookie of the Year” — a standout from the mid-’90s halcyon days of kids’ sports movies (see also: “Little Big League,” “Air Bud,” “Little Giants,” “The Big Green”) that he also directed.

It doesn’t feel like there are nearly as many sports comedies geared towards kids as there were in the 90s. The decade brought hits such as The Mighty Ducks, The Sandlot, Angels in the Outfield, The Big Green, Space Jam, Cool Runnings and more. But one of my favorites as a child of that time […]

We're celebrating 50 brilliant UK independent bookshops. If your favourite is missing, please add it to the list below...
In Neil Gaiman’s preface to Shelf Life: Fantastic Stories Celebrating Bookstores, he describes four bookshops from his childhood. One was a travelling school shop, one a local store staffed by a helpful hippy where he’d pick up 25p Tom Disch novels, another was a bus ride away and owned by a Grinch who’d glower at schoolchildren customers, and the last was a now-defunct Soho sci-fi and fantasy treasure trove. Four individual shops run by booksellers with distinct personalities and idiosyncratic tastes. All of which made Gaiman what he is.
That’s the joy of independent bookshops. Their personalities shape those of the people who visit them. They’re not homogenous. Their stock tends to reflect their passions rather than the year's best-performing unit-shifters. And their...

With the World Cup taking over our televisions, and kind of our lives, it got us thinking about some of our favorite soccer movies. The big green guy just can't get a break on the big silver screen. After both Ang Lee's 2003 attempt and Louis Leterrier's 2008 reboot failed to ignite much more than a flicker of fan interest, the Hulk finally received some rave reviews for his part in Joss Whedon's ensemble superhero flick "The Avengers" last year. Mark Ruffalo's performance led to inevitable talks about a solo spin-off. However, Marvel's potential plans to attempt yet another Hulk adventure seem to be further off than we thought, even as recent reports have surfaced that detail Marvel's plans for the character throughout Phases 2 and 3. ...

Elmayimbe then says that Avengers 3 will see The big green fella return to Earth, and focus on the comic book storyline World War Hulk We can't be certain that all or any of this is true of course, but Latino Review are right more often that they are wrong and there is no doubt Marvel consider them major annoyances with their constant scoopage, so that's good enough for us. I’ve been going back and forth on just how excited I am for The Avengers, but with images like that it’s hard not to be eager to see how it will turn out.
I’m still not entirely sure how Black Widow and Hawkeye fit in with the group – other than to further raise the Hottest Team of Superheroes in the History of the Nine Worlds quotient – but most...

Another easy breezy call at the top, with the feline family film poised to dominate. Still, questions remain, intrigue can be found, and we owe it to ourselves to break this thing down. Ready? Let's hit it! Laremy predicted the #1 movie correctly 3 Weeks In A Row Puss in Boots Clearly, numbers around the Shrek openings are germane to this conversation. The big green ogre has opened at $12k, 26k, 30k, and $16k per theater, respectively. The progression of the franchise (now downward) is also apparent, but it's also important to note where the series started out.
So $12k per theater is where I like this one, even with the 3-D and IMAX boost. It's getting healthy reviews, plus Brad liked it, which augers well, but parentals wade into new franchises tentatively. The holdover potential is there though, as is the sequel opportunity. You could go as high as $60m if you were feeling bullish,...

It's that time of the year again, when publicists everywhere pitch their most eco-friendly products in the silliest of ways. Let's hope they're at least diluting real environmentalism with reclaimed water.
Happy Earth Day, everyone. If you're running an extension cord to your laptop and working outside, this may be hard to accept, but some hardcore environmentalists think Earth Day is pretty silly--if not damaging--because it lets people get off with dropping a brick in their toilet tank for a few days and flushing away guilt about their wasteful ways for the rest of the year. Figuratively speaking.
And if you're judging by the slew of companies trying to grab Earth Day cred with absurd press releases about how re-using toner cartridges and watching golf-themed TV shows is somehow going to save us from steering our SUVs off the cliffs of oblivion, then Earth Day is the silliest time of the year.

For all you Gerard Butler fans hoping the star of 300 and RocknRolla had grown out of his Ugly Truth/Bounty Hunter romantic rut, we're very sorry. Butler will play a former soccer pro who agrees to coach his son's team and finds himself fending off gorgeous soccer moms. Biel will play his ex-wife who is getting re-married and Thurman will be one of the soccer moms. Gabriele Muccino (The Pursuit of Happyness, Seven Pounds) will direct a script by Robbie Fox (So I Married An Axe Murdered, In the Army Now). Read more after the jump. Variety broke the news [1] of this film, which is being developed by Nu Image/Millennium Films. Butler will also produce along with Jonathan Mostow and others. Whether you call it soccer or football, I think everyone can agree that there haven't been that many movies that would spawn praise equal to that of an inspiring a "Gooooal!" The big green hero's resilience shows that quality counts at the Us box office, but the A-Team plan looks unlikely to come together
Shrek's refusal to buckle under the challenge of four major new releases in the past two weeks underscores the movie's quality, not to mention the power of word of mouth among discerning audiences unmoved by weekly box office hysteria. Universal's comedy Get Him to the Greek arrived in second place, boasting a central role for Russell Brand's scoundrel Aldous Snow, first seen in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. It was a good dent, however it's a tough proposition for British comics to achieve theatrical longevity in the Us (even with Judd Apatow as producer). Time will tell whether audiences here have the taste – and the stamina – for Brand.

There must be something in the water over at Dreamworks Animation. As happened with the studio's How to Train Your Dragon in the spring, Shrek Forever After appears like it has legs and knows how to use them. Who -- besides David Poland -- woulda thunk it?! The big green ogre managed to beat the Four Ogres of the Apocalypse -- better known as the gals from Sex and the City 2 -- over the weekend, meaning Jeffrey Katzenberg is probably having a green-colored cosmopolitan right about now. Mix one up yourself and get ready for some weekend receipts.

Chicago – The laziest big budget film of the year, “Shrek Forever After” is the worst kind of family entertainment in that it relies solely on the goodwill engendered by the hit movies that came before to not only get audience members in seats this weekend but to sell them toys, video games, and tickets to amusement parks.
