How does Netflix determine which titles leave and which enter its dauntingly large library? Do they carefully analyze viewing statistics and find content that caters to our interests? Or do they simply throw an immense amount of content at the wall and watch what sticks?
The answer is probably a mix of both. Like most entertainment companies, Netflix knows full well the potential of mathematics, but it also respects the creative spirit. As such, some new additions may have been carefully chosen, and others not. In any case, here’s an overview of the 81 new movies and TV shows headed to the platform this coming week.
Let’s begin with the basics. One of the most inoffensive yet well-crafted Hollywood films arriving is Donnie Brasco. Produced in 1997, it stars now-legendary actor Johnny Depp in one of his first lead roles ever, and tells the story of an undercover cop who...

You know, plenty of streaming services would treat the dog days of summer as an excuse to slow down. At Netflix, however, the content buffet is still open, baby. Despite the coronavirus pandemic shutting down all of Hollywood for an extended period of time, Netflix’s new releases for July 2020 are still jam-packed with a host of familiar originals.
The blockbuster this month is probably The Umbrella Academy season 2. The next installment for the Hargreeves family arrives on July 31. And if that’s too long of a wait for you, Netflix gets the month off to a strong start with a string of originals as well. Unsolved Mysteries arrives on July 1, followed by Warrior Nun on July 2, and The Baby-Sitter’s Club on July 3. That’s not even to mentioned the feminist take on Arthurian legend, Cursed, which premiers on July 17.
There are a couple of intriguing original movies to consider this month as well.

Netflix is bulking up its documentary slate with three upcoming shorts that will premiere over the summer. IndieWire is exclusively announcing the streaming service’s upcoming documentary shorts, which will include the Sundance award-winner “John Was Trying to Contact Aliens.”
The 16-minute short, directed by British filmmaker Matthew Killip, focuses on John Shepherd, who has spent three decades trying to contact extraterrestrials from his Michigan home. He uses a enormous store of high-tech equipment to beam a variety of music — reggae, Afrobeat, jazz, and Eastern music — millions of miles into space.
“John Was Trying to Contact Aliens” won the Short Film Jury Award for nonfiction at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. It will be available on Netflix August 20.
In July, Netflix will make available two other short docs: “The Claudia Kishi Club” on July 10 and “The Speed Cubers” on July 29.
“The Claudia Kishi Club” was an official SXSW selection this year.

Millennials haven’t fully ceded their cultural prowess to the zoomers just yet, although their younger counterparts may be too politically engaged to have time to binge watch “Breaking Bad” for a fourth time. Not only has the millennial penchant for nostalgia-watching kept cultural touchstones like “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Wet Hot American Summer” alive in the cultural conversation, but it also continues to influence the kinds of newer projects that get made. That explains Disney’s live-action remakes of “The Lion King” and “Mulan,” but also shows like “BH90210” and “Fuller House.”
Hoping to make a positive entry into the emerging genre of ’90s nostalgia cash grabs is “The Baby-Sitters Club,” a new Netflix show based on the bestselling kids’ book series published by Scholastic from 1986 to 2000. The popular books were previously adapted for TV and film in the 1990s. The new Netflix series released a first trailer today,...

The streaming wars may have recently been kicked up a notch with the addition of new combatants like Disney Plus and HBO Max, but with over 180 million subscribers worldwide, it looks like Netflix‘s position at the top of the tree is virtually unassailable.

Long before there was a sisterhood of traveling pants or 13 reasons why, there was a club…a club of baby-sitters.
Netflix is adapting the beloved and long-running book series The Baby-Sitters Club into a modern iteration aimed at the baby-sitters of today. The 10-episode adaptation will follow the friendship and adventures of five middle school-aged friends as they start a baby-sitting business in Stoneybrook, Connecticut.
The show is produced by original Baby-Sitters Club author Ann M. Martin and Rachel Shukert (Glow) will serve as showrunner. Lucia Aniello, Lucy Kitada, Michael De Luca, Frank Smith and Naia Cucukov are all attached as executive producers.
The series of Baby-Sitters Club novels ran from 1986 through 2000 and sold 176 million copies. The novels were trailblazers in the burgeoning young adult literature scene. A 13-episode TV series adaptation previously aired in 1990 on HBO and Nickelodeon. The franchise also received a movie adaptation in 1995.

Early on in “Snapshots,” an elderly matriarch announces to her visiting daughter and granddaughter that two topics of conversation are forbidden for the weekend: “what-ifs and politics.” It’s as sure a sign as any that those themes — identity politics in particular, with the red-blue kind more implied — will proceed to dominate Melanie Mayron’s earnest, gentle-hearted film, an across-the-generations ode to following your heart and living your truth. If that sounds corny, this reflection on an illicit affair between two young married women, and the familial reverberations it has decades later, isn’t shy of stating its case in bluntly homespun terms: One rather wishes Jan Miller Corran and Katherine Cortez’s evidently heartfelt script placed a little more trust in its actors (and audience) to connect the emotional dots.
As it is, “Snapshots” wallows a little too readily in cliché to be quite as stirring as its story...
