UK director Gurinder Chadha has revealed how she has struggled to set up her own take on Charles Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol, as part of the oral evidence she has given during the first session of the UK Parliament’s cross-party Culture, Media and Sport (Cms) Committee today, January 23.

The filmmakers behind Freaky Tales are talking about the experience of working with late actor Angus Cloud in one of his final roles.
The Euphoria actor, who died at age 25 in July, is posthumously onscreen at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival in the Anna Boden- and Ryan Fleck-directed feature, which premiered on Jan. 18 in Park City, Utah.
Freaky Tales, which defies traditional genre definitions, has punk rockers fighting neo-Nazis, rap battles featuring real-life pop star Normani, Pedro Pascal as a soon-to-retire fixer, and an entire plot centered on Golden State Warrior All-Star Sleepy Floyd’s performance in the 1987 playoff game against the “showtime”-era Lakers. The film, told in four interweaving chapters, is set in 1987 in Cloud’s native Oakland.
“He’s got the Bay Area accent. It’s important that we had some people that talked that way [in the movie],” Fleck told THR prior to the festival. Boden added, “We...

Sydney Sweeney recently got candid about what she and her Euphoria castmembers went through following the unexpected and tragic death of their co-star, Angus Cloud, in July after an accidental overdose.
In a recent cover story for Glamour U.K., Sweeney opened up about the loss and her career in general, which skyrocketed following her Emmy-nominated roles in The White Lotus and Euphoria.
“[My co-stars and I] were constantly on the phone with each other crying, because it was just such a shock,” she told the publication about when the news broke. “I don’t think it’ll truly feel real or hit me until we’re filming, and I won’t see Angus on set.”
She continued, “[At least] when we are filming, all of our eyes are on each other, and we’re there for each other, just in a different way than we’re able to when we’re all in very separate places in the world.

Adam Sandler long ago perfected the art of working with his friends. So what’s next? Now, he’s taking that same approach of working with people he already knows and loves to generate a platform, through his Happy Madison production shingle and streaming giant Netflix, for his own daughters Sunny and Sadie Sandler to shine.
Is it still nepotism if it’s this blatant? Probably — but in an added twist, Sandler’s choice to bolster his daughters comes with a pleasant surprise: it works, and well.
Directed by Sammi Cohen, this new entry in the Sandler-family-business model, “You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah” is an endearing take on the coming-of-age tween film, with a heavy dose of religion — in the best way. Sunny Sandler stars as Stacy, a sweet 13-year-old who dreams of a blow-out bash bat mitzvah, one heavy on the New York City influences and Lmfao bangers,...

In Elle‘s September profile of Zendaya, Levinson shared that he sees the HBO drama’s subsequent chapter as a film noir that will “explore what it means to be an individual with principles in a corrupt world,” all told through Rue’s perspective.

A lot of people loved Angus Cloud, the star of Euphoria who abruptly died today at the age of 25, for his voice — that syrupy laconic drawl that sounded like a podcast at .5x speed. But I loved him for his eyes, these wet Easter-egg blue pools of emotion rimmed with dusky lashes, the kind that grandmas say are wasted on boys, the kind that not even the most talented beauty vlogger could ever hope to recreate. The second he fixed those eyes on the troubled Rue (Zendaya) in their first scenes together,...

Exclusive: Mvd Entertainment Group has acquired worldwide rights to the autobiographical coming-of-age comedy 5-25-77, from writer-director Patrick Read Johnson (Spaced Invaders), slating it for release in North American theaters this fall, with an unveiling on digital and VOD to follow.
The film’s title stems from the 1977 release date of George Lucas’ original Star Wars film—which today celebrates its 45th anniversary. Well, folks. "Euphoria" season 2 has finally come to a close, and with it, all the wonderfully excessive weekly tweeting about the show. The title is a metaphor. The criminal justice system in America is a black hole consuming everything in its path but, unlike in general relativity where an event horizon shields the act from outside observation, we are helplessly watching as it happens. It’s what makes the conceit behind Sergio De La Pava’s novel so intriguing and why director Chase Palmer and his co-writer David Matthews’ adaptation, Naked Singularity, leaves a lot to be desired. While the concept remains sound as the backdrop for a frustrated public defender choosing the riskier road less traveled to make his mark and a difference when every other version of himself would balk, it has us believing the surreal visual anomalies sprinkled amidst the heist have purpose beyond superficial thematic reinforcement.
My assumption is that the blurring of lines between the climactic robbery and the collapse of the star that is the American courts,...

It’s Darren’s (Kelly McCormack) second foray into the “paid dating” scene and her experience is already drastically different than the first. That one had her going dress shopping with an older gentleman treating her to the clothes for her trouble. This one is at a fancy restaurant with a man (Colm Feore’s Gordon) who seems to know someone at every table on the way to hers. Where the first came with an inherent awkwardness from both parties, Gordon is nothing but confident in what this situation is and who else knows it. Is it enough for Darren to drop her guard? Not initially. The more he provokes her to take control of their date being that she’s the in-demand commodity, however, the more she willingly complies.

Exclusive: Hulu is doubling down on Margaret Atwood adaptations with a TV version of her book Maddaddam in the works.

HBO Max is set to enter into its second month of existence. And you know what that means: it’s Christmas in July!
HBO Max’s list of new releases for July 2020 is highlighted by one prominent Christmas movie: last year’s Emilia Clarke-starring Last Christmas. But the real cause for Christmas in July is all the exciting animated DC content coming our way on the first of the month. July 1 sees the arrival of just about every animated Batman project ever created. July 1 also features the arrival of just about every Justice League animated series ever created as well.
If that weren’t enough, July 1 is also when every live-action Superman movie (save for Man of Steel) makes it streaming debut. July is starting to look like a month where HBO Max establishes its real potential and geek culture bonafides…despite an at-times difficult rollout.

When HBO Max launched last month, DC fans hoped it would be the premiere place to go to watch all their favorite DC content. While the streaming service did have an impressive array of films and TV shows available on launch, there were a lot of notable missing titles, too, due to pre-existing licenses getting in the way. As time goes on, though, more DC properties will end up on the site. Case in point: this July will see a whole heap of superhero content go up on HBO Max.

Blinded by the Light is directed by famed Indian/British director Gurinder Chadha – a sizeable and much-needed voice in British Cinema who has been a devotee of crafting and spreading stories of minorities since the early days of her work with the BFI in the 1990s. Blinded by the Light is directed by famed Indian/British director Gurinder Chadha – a sizeable and much-needed voice in British Cinema who has been a devotee of crafting and spreading stories of minorities since the early days of her work with the BFI in the 1990s. Things might be getting a little meta this season.
One of the new residents introduced on Code Black Season 3 Episode 1 is filming a documentary ... something along the lines of what Ryan McGarry made about the Los Angeles County Hospital ER.
But he's not the only newbie, and boy did they have a hell of a first day.
Pepper definitely had it the worst. Who gets accidentally dosed with fentanyl on their first day?! I hope her insurance and sick time kicks in right away.
Despite her being, well, unconscious for most of the hour, we learned a surprising amount about the new female resident. In addition to being a little meek and self-doubting, her real name is Andrea and she had throat cancer as a kid.

Most movies have a long journey to movie theaters, but “5-25-77” has a longer one than most. As the title might suggest, it’s a coming-of-age picture about the release of the original “Star Wars,” based in part on the experiences of writer-director Patrick Read Johnson, who was one of the first people outside the creators to see “Star Wars,” before going on to write or direct movies including “Dragonheart,” “Baby’s Day Out” and “Angus.”
Johnson began developing the project in 1999 after teaming up with original “Star Wars” producer Gary Kurtz, and began shooting the low-budget project, about an aspiring filmmaker in the run up to the release of George Lucas’ film, in 2004, with production continuing on-and-off until 2006 (though pick-ups have been done more recently too).

The first volleys of the Battle of Culloden have yet to be fired, but that didn’t stop Outlander from dealing one of its main characters a bloody death in Saturday’s season finale.
Dougal MacKenzie, Jamie’s headstrong and bloodthirsty uncle, met his end when Fraser himself (with a little help from Claire) pushed a blade into his chest. Dougal’s death came after he’d walked in on the Frasers talking about poisoning Prince Charles, aka the only way they could think of stopping the carnage Claire knew would happen if the skirmish against the British took place.

Warning: This recap contains spoilers for Outlander‘s Season 1 finale.
Deep breaths, everyone.
For months now, Outlander‘s Black Jack Randall, a sadistic Redcoat who makes Jeffrey Dahmer look like a mewling kitten in comparison, has had Jamie Fraser in his sights. In the season finale, Randall slakes his desire by taking command of not only the Scot’s body but also his soul.
I was gonna write, “The latter is harder to watch,” but that’s just not true. Both Jamie’s rape and its psychological aftereffects are horrifying, compelling, awful and expertly acted, and they provoke so many reactions/conversations,...

Taylor Swifts’ relationship status remains to be in a “Blank Space.”
The 1975 singer, Matt Healy, finally set the record straight after months of speculation that the two were involved in a romance.
“It’s bloody fake, it’s all fake, it’s all a farce,” Matt revealed in an interview with Australia’s 2DayFM show Shazam Top 20 with Angus and Ash. “We met each other, we exchanged numbers in the same way that a lot of people in this kind of world do and we spoke occasionally and then she’s the biggest pop star in the world. I’m in Australia, there’s no relationship or anything happening, it’s funny how people really really buy into that.”

The relationship rumors began in November after Taylor attended The 1975 concert at The Palladium in New York City with her BFFs Selena Gomez and Ellie Goulding.

The title of the most episode of "American Horror Story: Freak Show" should tell you two things. One, all those nice ladies who were disappointed by how drunk and uncoordinated Jimmy was at their Tupperware party will meet a grisly end by the time the credits roll. Two, all pretense of subtlety or nuance has gone out the window.
So Fresh, So Clean
The episode kicks off with Dandy (Finn Wittrock) hitting up Maggie Esmeralda (Emma Roberts) for a peek into her crystal ball. There's something different about Dandy; for one thing, he's crying less. He seems so much more alive and charming since he killed his mother and bathed in her blood. When Maggie looks into her crystal ball, we see flashbacks to Dandy doing some fairly grotesque things with corpses, but it's not clear if Maggie sees the same thing. In the beginning of the season, it seemed...

Right after one group of friends signs off, new friends will be introduced ... by a former writer-producer of "Friends," no less.
Immediately following the series finale of CBS' "How I Met Your Mother" Monday (Mar. 31), the network will debut the sitcom "Friends With Better Lives." The premise of longtime acquaintances in amusing situations -- mainly revolving around their differing relationship levels -- may seem familiar, but it's served up by a fresh ensemble cast merging established TV faces and relative newcomers.
Will (played by "Dawson's Creek" alum James Van Der Beek) is struggling to adjust after his recent divorce; Jules (actress-model Brooklyn Decker) is newly engaged to visibly amorous Lowell (Rick Donald); Kate (Zoe Lister-Jones, "Whitney") is a career-driven serial dater; and the married Bobby (Kevin Connolly, "Entourage") and Andi (Majandra Delfino, "Roswell") observe their friends' allegedly better lives somewhat enviously.

When Dawson’s Creek producers were casting about for the right actor to play the WB drama’s verbose, Spielberg-loving lead, not everyone was in agreement that it should go to James Van Der Beek. But Kevin Williamson, the prime-time show’s creator, overlooked worries that his top choice, with just a few theater credits and a movie called Angus to his name, lacked the star power required to carry the role and gave the part to the 20-year-old Connecticut native anyway. By the spring of 1998, mere months after the series’ January 20 debut on the WB (R.I.P.), Van Der Beek was being ogled by millions of girls on the cover of Ym (also R.I.P.) and risking death-by-stampede during simple shopping excursions to the mall. As part of our weeklong look at celebrity culture in the year 1998, Vulture spoke with Van Der Beek, now 36, about his breakout year,...

As Jurassic Park and its sequels arrive on Blu-ray, we caught up with Ariana Richards, who starred as Lex Murphy, about her role in the film…
Having already appeared in films such as Tremors, Spaced Invaders and Timescape, young actress Ariana Richards landed her most prominent role in the 1993 classic, Jurassic Park. While Stan Winston’s realistic dinosaurs were understandably the main draw for audiences, their presence wouldn’t have been the same without a vital, human dimension – and Richards’ performance as Lex Murphy brought a great sense of adventure and fear to a visually stunning movie.
With Jurassic Park out now on Blu-ray, we spoke to Ms Richards about her role in the film, the impact it had on her career, and what it was like to work with Steven Spielberg…
How have you enjoyed revisiting your time making the film as the promotion for this re-release has gone on?...

One of my favorite films growing up was Angus, the best John Hughes film that John Hughes never wrote. I'm sure many of you agree. It was a classic outsider teenage comedy, only this outsider had real, physical impediments to overcome, and there were no magical makeover cures. It was about looking within and pulling out that inner confidence beaten back by years of humiliation and fat jokes. It was also about James Van Der Beek getting punched in the face.
Terri, the upcoming indie with John C. Reilly and a very solid performance from Jacob Wysocki in the title role, is the more realistic, less superficial version of Angus. I saw it at Sundance this year, and it is hard to watch. It's painful because it feels almost too real. It takes those humiliations and beats you with them. It gets you inside the mind of an obese sad-sack teenager,...

A few years ago, Star Wars fans waited eagerly for the release of a film about a group of friends who travel cross country trying to acquire a copy of The Phantom Menace before its theatrical release. The movie was Fanboys, a film that spoke to Star Wars fans in a way no other movie had before. Despite some much publicized issues with the script, and some story tweaks and movie studio meddling, the film was released and eventually came to DVD. There was mixed reaction, but fans of Star Wars were thrilled to have a movie that spoke to their love of the franchise.

Weezer fans apparently managed to make convincing arguments to their local concert promoters, as the band has already booked dates on its Memories Tour, which will feature two nights of Weezer in each city. On the first night, the band will play their classic self-titled debut (otherwise known as "The Blue Album") in its entirety, while the second night will feature a run through their cult-classic 1996 follow-up Pinkerton. Of course, both of those albums are particularly brief (they each contain 10 tracks and "Blue" is only 42 minutes long; Pinkerton is an ever more efficient 35 minutes), which means that the band will be filling in the rest of each concert with a set list of hits from other albums (much in the same way Trent Reznor did when he played The Downward Spiral front-to-back during the Nine Inch Nails farewell tour last year).

In a number of ways falling in love with a film is the same as falling in love with a lady. You can’t always chose who you hold a candle for. In fact, a lot of time, the heart dictates the object of its affection in spite of logic or pragmatism. Often the recipient of the heart’s desire isn’t the most obvious choice; they aren’t neccesarily the best looking or the smartest. Yet they always have something else going on, a je ne se quais, a something else you may or may not be able to put your finger on. It may be just a small idiosyncacy like the way she screws up her nose when annoyed or the kooky inflections that pepper her sentences.

A band that started off their mainstream career fighting off allegations of "selling out," Green Day are now at the beginning of a long road of selling their first video game. Like the Beatles, Van Halen, and Aerosmith the boys from Berkeley have to convince gamers that their catalog is worth consuming as an interactive experience.
It's almost a safe bet that the game's track list will be more International Superhits and less Shenanigans but that doesn't mean that some of their deep cuts aren't worthy of being on the disc. Here's ten of the best options:

Being a teenager is hard work. Growing up, and all the tribulations that come along with it, have been the subject of a great many films. The coming of age movie is tricky and, unfortunately, we recently lost John Hughes, one of the men who perfected the art of holding up a mirror to our growing pains. This month marks the DVD and Blu-ray release of one of the best coming of age films in recent memory: Adventureland. It’s so good that I absolutely refuse to summarize the plot in hopes that you’ll watch it. To be honest, I’ve always had two guilty pleasure genres: horror and coming of age. I appreciate the best (American Graffiti and Dazed and Confused) as well as the worst (I Love You Beth Cooper and any American Pie sequel). In the spirit of things, here are five coming of age films...

Yet another movie about "Star Wars," called "77," is being made. But unlike "Fanboys," this is more of a coming-of-age story rather than a hilarious road trip. Today, we have a trailer for it. Check it out below. Plot: Alienated, hopeful-filmmaker Pat Johnson's (John Francis Daley) epic story about growing up in rural Illinois, falling in love, and becoming the first fan of the movie that changed everything. The new movie is written and directed by Patrick Read Johnson, who the movie is about. He previously helmed "Space Invaders" and "Angus," and is credit with providing the story for "Dragonheart." "77" has yet to find a distributor. Trailer: If you cannot see the player, click here.
