House of Cards will air on UKTV's Drama from Saturday (July 12) - but the star of this four-part serial is not Kevin Spacey's ruthless Us official Frank Underwood, but rather Tory chief whip Francis Urquhart, played with charming malevolence by Ian Richardson.
Adapted by Andrew Davies - writer of Mr Selfridge, Pride and Prejudice and many more - from Michael Dobbs's original novel, the UK iteration of House of Cards was a smash hit on both sides of the Atlantic. Scoring BAFTA and Emmy wins in the early '90s, it went on to inspire the acclaimed Netflix series.
"I feel flattered that Netflix chose to reconstruct it," says Davies. "And I'm delighted that ours has been rediscovered, and that it's going to be shown again on Drama."
Francis vs. Frank
But how does the original House of Cards compare to its modern counterpart? Though in many ways a...

It's been a while since I've checked in with the hair-gel abusing, giant-chinned, pout-osauras rex monsters that are the Made in Chelsea cast. There has been an extraordinary amount of chitter-chatter in the Digital Spy office and my Twitter timeline about this week's episode, so I decided to give Cheska, Binky, Spencer, Foo-Foo, Dipsy and Po another visit.
I wouldn't want to miss out would I? Yah.
Diving into the Made in Chelsea world midway through its fifth series was a bit like when you catch a foreign soap opera on your hotel TV when you're on holiday in Spain or France. Except with worse acting. I wasn't entirely sure what was going on and at times, a Sign Zone-esque person in the bottom corner of the screen would have been useful. They could translate the hair-flicks, the yahs and the undramatic pauses into intelligible English for anyone who didn't...

Emily Watson's raw performances have made her one of Britain's most spellbinding actors. Now she's playing a woman running for prime minister – against her husband. She talks to Carole Cadwalladr about marriage, sexuality and the joy of viscose blouses
The plots of TV dramas are often so preposterous and far-fetched. And then sometimes they're not. The latest three-parter from the BBC, The Politician's Husband, stars David Tennant and Emily Watson as two senior politicians who are married to one another and whose domestic life starts to unravel when the husband's career begins to be eclipsed by that of his more talented wife. If this is a fantasy (and none too flattering) version of Ed Balls and Yvette Cooper's lives, then at least they can be happy with the cast.
It's a mark of how much the star of TV drama has risen that an actor of Emily Watson's stature is involved.

Brave is set to win the box office this weekend, surprising no one. It will be Pixar's 13 consecutive number one opening, raking in $65 million, easily beating Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter which will open in third with $20 million, behind Madagascar 3.
The case that led to the Chief of the Boat on the U.S.S. Florida, a nuclear submarine, being removed from duty involved the gay hazing of a sailor. Once the sailor related to his mates that he had been held at knife point in Diego Garcia and nearly raped, they hazed him with gay slurs and the nickname "Brokeback." The Chief of the Boat is responsible for maintaining discipline...

David Tennant and Emily Watson have signed up to star in new BBC Two drama The Politician's Husband. The three-part serial is written by Paula Milne (White Heat) and has been described as a "bookend" to her award-winning 1995 drama The Politician's Wife. Former Doctor Who star Tennant will play Aiden Hoynes, a senior cabinet minister and political rising star, while Watson - who recently won a BAFTA for her role in ITV's Appropriate Adult - will play his wife and fellow politician Freya Gardner. The Politician's Husband - directed by Boardwalk Empire's Simon Cellan Jones - will explore the complexities of a political marriage and the consequences when (more)...
