Screen’s chief critic and reviews editor Fionnuala Halligan dissects this year’s Competition films.
Welcome to the “huge party” of Cannes 70. If the Official Selection this year is a “lab”, the formula isn’t quite complete - Thierry Fremaux announced 18 films which will compete for the Palme D’Or today, implying that three have yet to arrive (he also hinted that a glaring absence, that of a film from China for the second consecutive year, may yet be rectified; nothing was said however about the absence of a major Hollywood studio thus far).

Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival is the kind of brainy, science-based sci-fi you’d expect from such a visionary (strange comment in concept, but sensical once you’ve screened his alien drama). Like good, thought-provoking sci-fi fodder, Villeneuve launches into realms of political and social satire by way of unexpected means. This is not an invasion film – it’s a study of humanity from the perspective of eyeless beings in a hovering black pod. No big Independence Day action sequences or comedic Paul-like interactions. Villeneuve starts and ends his film with human interaction, because that’s the real focus here. Not slimy extraterrestrials or phaser beams. Just true, behavioral interactions.

The sun sets on Day Two since the world was changed by events in Paris. After the shock, the grief, the anger, the disbelief, France must act, and so must we. But the challenge for France will be the same as that faced by the United States after 9/11: how to face down an enemy that has no scruples — without losing our own. How to vanquish a foe that abides by no rules, who seeks to undermine our core values — without relinquishing those very values ourselves. Technical difficulties tend to intertwine with my work every once and awhile. One of those times is when I had a phone interview with director Michael Bartlett. Bartlett is coming into St. Louis to promote his latest film, Treehouse. I didn’t realize until a few hours prior to the interview that Bartlett was the co-director of The Zombie Diaries and Zombie Diaries 2. Prior to calling Bartlett, I did some research – as I usually do – and got my questions ready. Typically, when I do interviews, I try to be more conversational than just ask questions. It seems to flow better for both myself and the subject of the interview. I’m also always interested in what got said subject into creating something in the genre as well as their background with the genre.
After I prepped “guideline” questions, I called Bartlett and proceeded to have about an hour long conversation with him.

Last year, James put together a comprehensive guide, of every piece of Halloween programming and horror movie that would air during the month of October. When I asked him if we were doing the same again this year, he acted like I was an idiot. Why wouldn’t we? With that knowledge in my head, I decided we would expand a little bit this year, and throw together a comprehensive DVD & Blu-ray buyer’s guide for the months of September and October. There are some really great horror releases between now and the end of October. Some studios wasted their opportunity to rope in the rabid genre fans. Fox, for example, except for a new Wrong Turn film, and a few catalog releases making their Blu-ray debuts(Exorcist sequels), has a calendar filled with nonsensical re-releases of titles that are already widely available, and at cheap prices.

1976 saw the publication of John Brosnan’s excellent book The Horror People. Written during the summer of 1975, it makes interesting reading 40 years down the line. Those who feature prominently in the book – Peter Cushing, Vincent Price, Jack Arnold, Michael Carreras, Sam Arkoff, Roy Ward Baker, Freddie Francis, Robert Bloch, Richard Matheson and Milton Subotsky – were still alive, as were Ralph Bates, Mario Bava, Jimmy Carreras, John Carradine, Dan Curtis, John Gilling, Robert Fuest, Michael Gough, Val Guest, Ray Milland, Robert Quarry and Michael Ripper, all of whom were given a mention. Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney Junior, Michael Reeves and James H Nicholson were not long dead. Hammer, Amicus and American International Pictures were still in existence. George A Romero had yet to achieve his prominence and Stephen King wasn’t even heard of!

Tyrant takes on a heavy load in “State of Emergency,” and it pays off in a big way. The pilot episode ended with Barry (Adam Rayner) realizing that his trip home was going to be delayed indefinitely, before he even hears the reasons. The series obviously hinges on him staying in town, so that was no big surprise, but watching how it starts to play out will surprise viewers and leave them wanting more.
From the premiere episode, it looked like the difference in ideologies between Barry and his brother, Jamal (Ashraf Barhom), was going to cause a certain amount of strife as the story continues to unfold. In “State of Emergency” it seems like it’s more likely that Jamal’s wife, Leila (Moran Atias), will be the catalyst for their future conflicts – or at least the more immediate ones. In a short flashback, Tyrant reveals that before Barry fled to the United States,...

Big Jim was an awful person before the Dome came down over Chester's Mill and he became even worse after the town was isolated. Throughout all of it, he held strong that he was acting in the town's best interest and perhaps that was a somewhat valid claim even if his actions weren't legal.
In "Exigent Circumstances," that all changed. Without a doubt, Big Jim proved that he's an evil man who is motivated more by self-preservation than the good for the town. But did anyone really ever doubt that?
He killed Dodee! The innocent and lovely Dodee's only mistake was overhearing evidence of Jim's misdeed.
After a season that meandered quite a lot, Under the Dome finally has gotten to a point where everything matters. Whether it's the Dome, the mini-Dome, the Four Hands, Barbie, Julia, Linda, Big Jim, Caroline or even Ben, every move and decision they make matters.

As a part of its plan to commemorate the 12th anniversary of the attacks of September 11, History announced today a new 30-minute commercial-free special to air on its cable and satellite H2 channel. 9/11: Relics From The Wreckage documents the stories of five objects to be placed in the National September 11 Memorial and Museum in NYC. Specifically, the special examines how the pieces were chosen and what they stand for. 9/11: Relics From The Wreckage evolved out of the long-term relationship that parent company A+E Networks has with the Museum. As well as this new special, History also said Friday that it plans to honor next Wednesday’s anniversary with a heavy slate of encore 9/11 related programming such as 102 Minutes That Changed America on History itself and 9/11 State Of Emergency on H2. Animal Planet already revealed earlier this summer that it had acquired the one-hour The Hero Dogs Of 9/11 to air on the anniversary.

Who's the devil in Chester's Mill?
Without a doubt, it's Big Jim. He may believe that he has the town's best interest at heart, but all he really cares about is maintaining and increasing his power position. He's killed people to protect his secret, to take out rivals for control and to frame the his biggest threat.
In "Speak of the Devil," Big Jim's motivations became clear. He's out for himself and that's it. While I do believe he cares about Junior, he's shown in the past that he would ditch his own son in a second if it served his greater purpose. Big Jim is the devil in town. So does that make Barbie the savior?

State of Emergency is a beginner zombie horror film. In fact its probably the lightest approach (outside of horror comedy) Ive seen in the zombie subgenre. Although technically only infected with a biotoxin those infected prey on the uninfected with the same tenacious resolve as the Dawn of the Dead remake and share the same crazed look as those from 28 Days Later. Although we can dub them biotoxin zombies this is only about half a zombie movie.

In a day and age where zombie movies are a dime a dozen, filmmakers have to do something in order to stand out from the crowd. It's not enough to just show the walking dead running or lumbering toward victims and then eating them. There's only so many times you can be shocked by a flesh-eater getting plugged in the head with a rifle. George Romero, Danny Broiled, and countless other directors have already given us those moments hundreds of times over. Unfortunately, State of Emergency is another in a long line of films that brings nothing new to the table at all.
A chemical plant explodes outside a small town. The residents soon show signs of contamination and become ravenous animals with an appetite for flesh. The government closes off the town, leaving any survivors in the area to fend for themselves. Four people holed up in a warehouse...

New York — Thanks to the printed word and the moving image, Salman Rushdie has recaptured the worst part of his life and relived one of the best.
Last fall, the 65-year-old author published the best-selling memoir "Joseph Anton" about his years in hiding that followed the 1988 publication of "The Satanic Verses" and the call for his death by Iran's Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. Rushdie is now promoting the film adaptation of his breakthrough novel, "Midnight's Children," winner of the Booker Prize in 1981 and one of the most highly praised works of fiction of its time.
"It was cathartic to write `Joseph Anton,'" Rushdie explained during a recent interview, wearing a gray suit and no tie, sipping coffee at a hotel rooftop garden in midtown Manhattan. "And `Midnight's Children' was the book where I really became a writer."

In his column ‘Rabble Rousing’, Gautam Shiknis Aatreya dwells upon why there are so few biopics in Indian cinema and what prevents filmmakers from attacking the Holy cows?
Contrary to gastronomic lore, you don’t need a strong digestive tract to bite into beef. It takes gonads, especially if it’s a succulent sirloin off Bovinus Divinus. I have marveled at the stories of Howard Hughes, Abe Lincoln, Sienna and a host of other non-Indians – when the makers of those films had the creative freedom and judicial protection to bring...

Deepa Mehta’s cinematic interpretation of Midnight’s Children was adapted in collaboration with the book’s author Salman Rushdie. The film features an ensemble cast of Bollywood actors and actresses and follows the narrative of Rushdie’s book which charts the birth of a newly divided Indian subcontinent through the eyes of a young boy named Saleem Sinai, who is born at the stroke of midnight on Indian independence.
There will a number of sections of the audience who will be interested in watching Midnight’s Children: those who have read and love the book, those with a historical interest in the Indian sub-continent’s history and those who are eager to see some big mainstream Bollywood names who feature in this big international English language film. We will try to cover all those interests as best we can.
First and foremost the film production: Deepa Mehta has created a beautiful and epic film.

It’s Halloween today, so it’s that time of the year again to dust off the masks, don witches hats and brooms, and go our terrorizing the neighbours.
Alternatively, if that isn’t your sort of thing anymore, you could just stay in and watch a horror movie, or play a good old fashioned video game where, for example, you can kill and maim a whole host of innocent (and not so innocent) Npc’s. Hey, why not? It’s your party. There’s been several over-the-top, ultra-violent video games down the years, from Grand Theft Auto to Manhunt, and State of Emergency to Mortal Kombat.
This list contains more blood and guts than your local butchers, without all the mess that comes with it.
Here are 20 Gory Games You Should Be Playing This Halloween.

In the decade that has passed since Grand Theft Auto 3 burst into our living room with its 3D graphics, immersive terrain and fast cars, powerful guns and deadly explosives, it spawned the attempts by several video games to copy the formulae for what was soon to become known as the “sandbox” series.
Some developers, admirably, succeeded in taking elements of Rockstar’s GTA franchise and making more exciting and compelling games out of them by adding their own unique features. Others, however, simply tried to sell a GTA Rip Off, and these titles became known as “Grand Theft Auto Clones”.
Here, What Culture! examines five games similar in style to GTA, and breaks them down into the good and the just plain bad.
The Good 5. State of Emergency (2002)
Released a year after Grand Theft Auto 3, this ultra-violent game was developed by Vis Entertainment and released onto the Playstation 2, Xbox and PC.

Warning: Significant spoilers follow!
Big Finish Productions can never, ever be faulted for a lack of ambition. They took the characters of Jago and Litefoot and made them into a, so far, five season audio series. They look Davros and created a backstory for him. They have several seasons of stories about wars against the Daleks and Cybermen. They even have an ongoing series of stories about political machinations on Gallifrey.
But “Counter-Measures”, their newest series, is perhaps the most ambitious. It follows the story of the Counter-Measures Group, a military organization created in the wake of a Dalek incursion on Earth in 1963; essentially a proto-unit. The origins for this group and their stories happened in the 1988 Doctor Who episode “Remembrance of the Daleks”, where we met Group Captain Gilmore (Simon Williams), Doctor Rachel Jensen (Pamela Salem), and Doctor Allison Williams (Karen Gledhill).

On May 5th they isolated the strain of Virus Hc-35, which became known as The Flu. On April 1st President Manson declared a State of Emergency, cleared the protesters from Zapruder Park, and issued orders for the Continuous Curfew. And the deaths came in millions. By June the food had run out, and we began to hunt the neighbors. By July the neighbors had run out, and we stayed confined to the 69th floor. Two days ago we ate Amelie. Now Katya is sitting in the living room, counting the last of the drugs on the table. Enough Neroin and Serafem to last only one person for the rest of the month.
“You know, darling,” I say, “You are very beautiful. I am seriously considering turning you into a lampshade.” Katya’s dark eyes narrow. “Don’t be silly,” she says, “we don’t have electricity.

We’re having a hard time imagining Bill Cosby dropping the F-bomb at all, let alone directing it at someone like Russell Simmons. Come on, it’s Russell Simmons, peaceful yogi billionaire who would never hurt a fly, right? But apparently Cosby and Simmons have been feuding ever since 2009, when Cosby began a campaign called “State of Emergency,” which sought to promote more socially conscious lyrics in rap music. Cosby is holding a grudge against Simmons, who criticized the campaign. Simmons wrote at the time, “Bill Cosby is an example of someone from the older generation who has consistently blamed the poets and asked suffering community members to bare the full burden of guilt for the struggles that they endure. …This is a call-out to all the adults who are judging more and listening less to the beautiful, progressive voices that come from our young people…Bill Cosby just happens be on the front line.

Hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons was ready to end his ongoing war with veteran comedian Bill Cosby, but it seems that the veteran comedian was still holding a grudge. Cosby apparently told Simmons to "Get the f*** out of my face" when the latter tried to apologize to him.
Their feud started a couple of years back when Cosby launched his State of Emergency campaign, calling for the clean up of the lyrics used in hip-hop music.
Simmons, 53, opposed his campaign, telling Global Grind that the older man is an "example of someone from the older generation who has consistently blamed the poets and asked suffering community members to bare the full burden of guilt for the struggles that they endure what they don't understand is that the young people who they criticize did not create their own realities."
But now, Simmons was ready to make amends. He saw the opportunity...

The breaking news email alert came in from CNN: "State of emergency declared in San Bruno, California, after massive gas explosion and fire." Thing is, it came in at 2:54 a.m., nearly 5 hours after the news actual broke, a stark contrast with the coverage of some nutty pastor in Florida's plans to burn the Koran. While the San Bruno fires were raging, guess what the reruns of prime-time cable news show were covering?...

We've got the first of the fall shows either coming back or premiering tonight (mostly on The CW which seems to try and get its properties out of the gate early to draw in viewers before they have to compete with the big boys) but I suspect there are many of you out there far more interested in the fact that the first actual NFL game of the season is on tonight. I don't know about the rest of you, but I've already got my guacamole makings, salsa con queso, and hint of lime chips ready to go and I'm not even a particular fan of either of the teams playing tonight. It's just a nice reminder that we're getting back into the fall TV season so everyone can stop complaining about how there's nothing on TV and start complaining about how everything on TV sucks. I know you've all...

"Please listen to the words. We worked hard, very hard to tell you about the state of emergency. Thank You" - Bill Cosby, from the liner notes in The Cosnarati: State Of Emergency The older demo knows him as Alexander Scott on the TV series I Spy. But most think of Bill Cosby as that iconic TV comedian/actor who played Dr. Heathcliff Huxtable, father of a lovable brood on NBC's top-rated '80s sitcom The Bill Cosby Show. The guy made some of us or our kids laugh food through our noses while selling Jell-o's Pudding Pops, and some bought his comedy albums that are still funny to this day. And what would Saturday mornings have been like in the '70s without his ginormous contribution to kid-pop culture, the cartoon series Fat Albert & the Cosby Kids. Never shy with his opinions...
