- Capt. Picard finds himself shifting continually into the past, future and present and must use that to discover a threat to humanity's existence.
- Past, present and future collide for Captain Picard as he finds himself bouncing around through three different time periods -- the Farpoint mission, the present, and the future in which many changes have affected the Enterprise-D crew. Meanwhile, the mischievous Q is back for his last time trying to help Picard figure out the meaning of a spatial anomaly - or is he only making things worse? You be the judge on this two-hour TV movie which concludes Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987).—Ian Murray Hamilton <ac743@ccn.cs.dal.ca>
- A bewildered Captain Jean-Luc Picard finds himself moving uncontrollably back and forth through time. One minutes he's aboard the Enterprise, the next, he's twenty five years in the future, working on his vineyard in France. Then suddenly he finds himself seven years in the past, being escorted aboard the Enterprise for the first time. While his crew suspects Picard of suffering from a debilitating mental disease, Picard struggles to convince them to investigate a temporal anomaly in the Neutral Zone that he believes to be related to his problem. Picard soon discovers that Q is responsible for his erratic time travels. Caught in a paradox that Q has devised, Picard realizes he must risk his life and the lives of his crew to save humanity.—Robert Lynch <docrlynch@yahoo.com>
- Past, present and future collide for Captain Picard as he finds himself bouncing around through three different time periods -- the Farpoint mission, the present, and the future in which many changes have affected the Enterprise-D crew. In the future he finds himself on a vineyard on Earth with Irudine syndrome and Geordi has come to visit from Risa III. Picard has been retired from Starfleet for 9 years and was last on the enterprise 25 years ago. Geordi has 3 daughters, Bret, Alandra and Sidney and his wife Leah is Director of the Daytrom institute. In the past, he has just taken command of the Enterprise and Tasha Yar (Denise Crosby) has greeted him. In the present, he is recounting his bizarre experiences to Deanna (who is having an affair with Worf)
In the present, Admiral Nakamura (Clyde Kusatsu) tells Picard that 30 Romulan war-birds are headed for the neutral zone. They are headed for the Devron system. Starfleet has picked up a spatial anomaly in the area. Picard is ordered to scan and probe, but not cross the border unless the Romulans do the same. Picard is back at his vineyard and is scared. He insists that Geordi takes him to meet Data, who is a professor at Cambridge.
In past and in his future, Picard hallucinates people laughing at him from the side-lines. In the past, Picard takes command of the Enterprise, Tasha is the security officer. Enterprise receives orders to be deployed to the Neutral zone due to a spatial anomaly detected on the Devron system. Their mission to Farpoint is canceled, but Picard orders Worf to proceed to Farpoint nonetheless.
He is back in the present where Picard realizes he can retain more of his memory every time and Beverly finds that he has accumulated 2 days' worth of memories in the matter of minutes. They all think it is odd that a spatial anomaly from the present would also be detected in the past. They speculate that the same would be found in the future. Present Picard asks Deanna if the Enterprise was ordered to the Devron system when he took over command of the ship. Deanna replies in the negative. This shows that the events in one time-line have no impact on the events in the other 2 time-lines.
Picard wakes up in the future and asks Geordi to be taken to the Neutral zone. But in this time period, Klingons have taken over the Romulan empire and there is no neutral zone. Admiral Riker refuses to help as Klingons have closed their border and there are no reports of any anomaly. Geordi says only medical ships are being let through by the Klingons. Picard calls USS Pasteur, captained by Beverly. They contact Worf, who is a Governor of a Klingon colony near the border, to get them permission to pass the border. It is revealed that Beverly and Picard got married and are now separated/divorced.
In the past, Picard gets to the coordinates where he first encountered Q, but Q is not there. Picard realizes that people laughing at him were at the trial that Q held for him. Picard is back at the trial and Q agrees to answer Yes or No questions from Picard. Q confirms that mankind is on trial again, there is no Romulan plot, and that Q is responsible for Picard shifting through time. Q is not responsible for the spatial anomaly. Q says Mankind is still on trial as the trial never ended. He charges Picard for wasting the last 7 years and not advancing the human mind and knowledge. Q says humanity's fate is sealed and that they will be destroyed., to make room for other more worthy species.
After the trial, Picard is in the present and goes to red alert. At the Neutral zone, they find the Romulans waiting. In the future, Worf gives permission for Beverly's ship to enter the neutral zone, but only if he can come along with Picard and Beverly.
In the past, Enterprise reaches the neutral zone as well. Picard asks Riker (who is still on Farpoint station) to stay put on Farpoint and keep Beverly and Geordi informed of their delay. The present Picard talks to Captain Tomalak (Andreas Katsulas) and agrees to send 1 ship each into the Devron system. In the Devron system they find a large subspace anomaly.
In the past, Picard enters the Devron system and Data finds the same large subspace anomaly. In the future Picard sees no anomaly in the Devron system. Data plans to send a reverse Tachyon pulse to search for anomalies not detectable otherwise. Beverly gives 6 hours since Klingon war-birds are on the way and is angry with Picard when he questions her orders in front of her crew. She doesn't care if Picard was her ex-husband or her ex-captain. Q meets Picard in future in private and asks him to continue looking for the answer
In the present Picard tells Data to use an inverse Tachyon pulse to look inside the anomaly. Data finds that it's a temporal anomaly created by the mixing of time and anti-time which has created a time distortion and sending out waves of temporal energy. Beverly reports that Geordi's optic nerves are growing, and crew are reporting ancient scars being healed. In the past, Picard asks Data to search the anomaly similarly. The anomaly is twice as large in the past. in the future, Klingons attack the USS Pasteur. As shields collapse, the Enterprise Decloaks and destroys the Klingon war-birds. Pasteur has a warp core breach and Riker beams them all out before the ship is destroyed. The Pasteur explodes and Riker orders the Enterprise to bug out, even as Picard begs to stay and find what caused the temporal anomaly. Basically, Picard was responsible for causing the anomaly in the future.
In the present, Geordi's eyes repair, but Alyssa loses her pregnancy. The temporal energy causes organic matter to get younger and the fetuses reverted to a stage where the DNA itself broke down. Q appears and takes Picard 3.5 Bn years ago to earth where life is about to form. He shows that the temporal anomaly fills the entire quadrant of the galaxy, the further back in time the bigger the anomaly. Due to this life never even formed on Earth. Hence future Picard himself was directly responsible for the destruction of humanity.
In the present, Data find 3 different Tachyon pulses converging inside the anomaly. In the future Picard meets Riker. He explains the shooting 3 Tachyon pulses at the same spot in 3 different time periods caused the time anomaly. Data agrees and Riker decides to take the ship back to the Devron system. They find the anomaly which is still small and was formed just 6 hours ago. Picard orders the Tachyon pulses to be stopped in the present and in the past. But the anomaly is unaffected. Data suggests taking the ship inside the anomaly and use the warp engines to create a warp shell, which would separate time and anti-time. But all 3 time periods have to work together on this. All 3 Picards order their ships into the spatial anomaly at the same time.
The past and the present Enterprises are destroyed. The future Picard holds his nerves, and the gambit works. He wakes up in Q's court trial. Q says Humanity has passed the trial. Everything returns to normal. Picard joins a poker game with his senior officers for the first time.
