Seven years ago, Jordan Peele surprised his fans with his directorial debut in the horror genre, Get Out. Peele was a familiar face to American TV audiences who enjoyed his sketch comedy series Key & Peele, which he starred alongside Keegan-Michael Key. However, the horror film from the director did have some influence from comedy in it.

The inspiration for the story of a Black man uncovering the secrets of his White girlfriend’s family came from Eddie Murphy’s 1983 stand-up special. Murphy’s one funny joke about a Hollywood movie trope was turned into the theme of a full-fledged horror film by Peele.

After years of dwelling in development hell, Eddie Murphy has finally returned to his iconic cop character, Axel Foley, in the new Netflix sequel Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. When Murphy broke out with both 48 Hrs and the 1984 original, he became a powerhouse as a comedic actor with a penchant for crossing over into action. However, he was never quite fully seen as an action star like Bruce Willis was when he overshadowed his career in Moonlighting with the movie Die Hard. In the ’90s, Murphy tried to take a swing at a more serious tone with the action vehicle Metro from 1997. And we take a look at this less-talked-about film movie his filmography on this entry of Revisited.

Eddie Murphy has made sure to don some of the most fan-favorite roles throughout his star-studded career, with his iconic Beverly Hills Cop role of Axel Foley ranking as one of his best ones to date. Even then, despite holding some really significant titles to his role like Coming to America and Trading Places, the actor holds some serious regrets about the roles he turned down.

Axel Foley is back for another onscreen mission, and he brought another nostalgic figure we never thought we’d see again.
In celebration of Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, Netflix has teamed up with early aughts ringtone icon Crazy Frog for a music video that pits him against the titular detective reprised by Eddie Murphy.
The pairing might appear random, given that Crazy Frog was a Swedish CGI-animated Eurodance character created in 2003, nearly a decade after Beverly Hills Cop III was released in 1994. But the character created by Erik Wernquist noted in the description of the YouTube video that he and Axel F “have been an iconic duo since 2005.”
Crazy Frog previously released a cover of ‘Axel F’, the original 1984 movie’s electronic theme song by German musician Harold Faltermeyer, which reached the top of the charts across most of Europe in 2005. His latest video offers a whole new remix of the track.

Hollywood star Eddie Murphy, who recently reprised his role as Axel Foley in the fourth installment in the Beverly Hills Cop film series, had a childhood marked by the tragic death of his father, who passed away when he was just 8 years old.

The actor has admitted that while he didn’t remember much about his father, Charles Edward Murphy, he was aware of the circumstances surrounding his death, attributing it to what he described as the ‘Murphy charm.’

At long last, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, the fourth film in the franchise (and the first in thirty years) is out, with it streaming on Netflix. Eddie Murphy’s career has had more ups and downs than an elevator, but his resurgence as a straight-to-streaming movie star in the past few years has given him the juice to revisit some of the biggest hits of his past. Three years ago, there was “Coming 2 America” on Prime Video. Now, 30 years after “Beverly Hills Cop III,” he’s back again with “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,” which is streaming on Netflix.
The fourth movie brings motor-mouthed Motor City cop Axel Foley back to La La Land to rescue his daughter, Jane (Taylour Paige), with his new partner, Beverly Hills detective Bobby Abbott (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), who’s also Jane’s ex-boyfriend. Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Paul Reiser, and Bronson Pinchot all reprise their long-ago roles, with Kevin Bacon joining the lineup as a police captain. “Axel F” isn’t going to win any Oscars, but it does deserve...

“Beverly Hills Cop” and its young exuberant star Eddie Murphy were dominant forces on the cultural landscape as soon as the action comedy opened Dec. 5, 1984 on 1,532 screens, earning over $15 million in its first five days of release. “Beverly Hills Cop” garnered nearly $235 million domestically and another $81.6 million internationally.
The comedy even earned an Oscar nomination for its screenplay while Murphy hit superstar status thanks to his dazzling comedic turn as Axel Foley, a freewheeling Detroit cop who is the ultimate fish out of water when a murder investigation leads him to the by-the-book Beverly Hills police department. And the soundtrack album featuring the film’s composer Harold Faltermeyer’s hit “Axel F,” as well as the Pointer Sisters‘ “Neutron Dance” and Glenn Frey’s “The Heat is On,” hit No. 1 on the Billboard chart.

It's been nearly 30 years since we last saw Axel Foley, the wisecracking Detroit cop played by Eddie Murphy, bring his street smarts to the posh streets of Beverly Hills. Now Netflix has revived the beloved franchise with the new film 'Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,' reuniting Murphy with original cast members Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Bronson Pinchot, and Paul Reiser.
This time around, Detective Foley heads back to Beverly Hills to save his estranged daughter and district attorney (played by Taylour Paige) from potential danger while investigating a murder. Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Paige’s cop ex-boyfriend, who joins in the mayhem as Foley and his pals uncover a conspiracy involving drug cartels.
How does the film stack up against the other movies in the Beverly Hills Cop franchise? Not bad, according to early IMDb user voting. Two days after premiering on Netflix, the fourth film has 15K votes with a respectable 6.7 average IMDb rating. That rating puts it above previous sequels ‘Beverly Hills Cop II’ (1987) at 6.5/10 stars and 134K votes, and 1994’s maligned ‘Beverly Hills Cop III,’ which sits at 5.5 with 90K votes. Unsurprisingly, the iconic original ‘Beverly Hills Cop’—directed by Martin Brest in 1984—has the highest score, with an impressive 7.4 rating with 209K votes.
If all this talk of Eddie Murphy and ‘80s buddy cop movies has you feeling nostalgic, IMDb spoke with the cast and crew of ’Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F’ to get their favorite films from the ‘80s and their must-see Murphy flicks. However, following the release of Murphy’s fourth installment in the franchise, Molloy dropped shocking revelations that are sure to spark controversies among the fandom.

The box-office success of Top Gun: Maverick and the recent Bad Boys sequels have proven that there’s undoubtedly a market for belated revivals of Jerry Bruckheimer-produced blockbusters. So it was simply only a matter of time before Eddie Murphy dusted off Axel Foley’s Detroit Lions jacket for another installment in the 40-year-old Beverly Hills Cop franchise.
Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F finds Foley once again journeying to Los Angeles, this time to help his lawyer daughter crack a dangerous case involving corrupt cops.

Although some younger audiences may not realize it, Eddie Murphy has been one of the biggest, most famous movie stars on the planet for more than 40 years. Part of the gap of knowledge for Gen Z might be the reality that Murphy stepped away from the limelight aside from a couple of notable titles that went straight to streaming over the last few years, such as the Amazon Original film "Coming 2 America," over the last decade. But Murphy is roaring back on screen this week with a vengeance by returning to one of his most recognizable and beloved characters in the new Netflix action comedy "Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F." With his return to this now-40-year-old character in mind, it's worth looking at the whole "Beverly Hills Cop" series. The 1984 original is one of the seminal action comedies ever made, but how does the rest of the franchise hold up?...

Axel F director Mark Molloy reveals that producer Jerry Bruckheimer has never seen Beverly Hills Cop III: “I didn’t do it, so you don’t need to see it.”
Barely doubling its sizeable $70m budget, Beverly Hills Cop III's box office takings suggested that audiences had thoroughly checked out of the franchise by 1994. And among the people who didn’t show up to watch the cop comedy thriller we can count Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the first two films in the series.

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F’s Mark Molloy is now the latest in a long line of filmmakers who Jerry Bruckheimer has recruited from the world of advertising.
Having written or directed at least four commercials for Apple, the humble Australian filmmaker won’t allow himself to say that he followed in the same footsteps as fellow Bruckheimer discoveries Tony Scott and Michael Bay, but in his ongoing effort to change up the status quo, the celebrated producer has frequently found new talent through commercials and music videos. First released in 1984, Martin Brest’s “Beverly Hills Cop” was one of the defining movies of its decade, and a huge stepping stone (along with “48 Hrs.” and “Trading Places”) toward stardom for Eddie Murphy. It not only spawned two sequels over the next decade, but set a template for action comedies that persists today. “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” marks the overdue fourth installment in the franchise and introduces with it a director to watch: Mark Molloy.
After beginning his career as a director of commercials for brands like Nike, Google and Apple, Molloy makes his feature debut with “Axel F,” which drew heavily from the first two “Beverly Hills Cop” films while pushing forward the story of its eponymous detective, now father to an equally-driven but estranged daughter (played by “Zola” breakout Taylour Paige).

This interview contains spoilers for "Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F."
It's been thirty years since the atrocious "Beverly Hills Cop III" seemingly killed the franchise for good, and longtime fans of the franchise can breathe a sigh of relief: The bad taste left in our mouths from that movie has finally been washed away. The brand new and long-gestating "Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F" may not be able to live up to the towering classic status of the first two films, but it's lightyears ahead of the third movie. Murphy feels like he still has a handle on this character and brings him into the modern world while still retaining some of what we love about him. That's a tricky balance to pull off without falling back too many times on the same exact lines we've seen before, and director Mark Molloy was instrumental in helping Murphy strike that balance.

Eddie Murphy is back as Axel Foley to help celebrate the 4th of July holiday. He is returning to one of his most legendary roles in Mark Molloy’s Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, which is playing exclusively on Netflix. The previous entry in the Beverly Hills Cop franchise, Beverly Hills Cop III, was released in 1994 and received mixed reviews. In the latest chapter of the Axel Foley saga, Detroit’s finest ditches the rickety rides of Wonder World to return to the streets of Beverly Hills after his daughter, Jane Saunders, is threatened.

Actors almost never become movie stars overnight. Even the born-to-dazzle likes of Cary Grant, Marilyn Monroe, and Paul Newman needed a bit of runway to soar to that rarified Hollywood air. Eddie Murphy, however, needed just one moment in his first movie to become a generational showbiz phenomenon.
That moment arrived 38 minutes into Walter Hill's 1982 action-comedy hit "48 Hrs.," when Murphy's furloughed criminal Reggie Hammond convinces Nick Nolte's Detective Jack Cates to let him shakedown a redneck bar's racist patrons for information on the whereabouts of a cop killer. Reggie, tired of Cates insistence that it takes "bullls*** and experience" to successfully interrogate suspects, invites the officer to "Come on in and experience some of my bulls***." Armed with nothing but Cates' shield and his mouth, Reggie bullies cows a saloon full of hostile white folks into terrified silence.

It’s been over 30 years since Eddie Murphy’s intrepid Detroit detective, Axel Foley, last graced movie screens in Beverly Hills Cop III. A much-loved franchise from the 1980s, the films followed the fish-out-of-water Axel as he traded the gritty streets of Detroit for sun-drenched Southern California, blazing his own trail to solve crimes and throwing more than a few spanners in the works of the fancy Beverly Hills Police Department along the way.
Now in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, Murphy returns once again as the wisecracking yet dedicated cop, this time bringing his rebellious energy to help his estranged lawyer daughter Jane. When masked intruders dangle her from a parking structure, Axel jumps on a plane and dusts off the signature Lions windbreaker that made him an icon to find out who’s behind the threats. Back in the golden fold are some familiar franchise faces like...

After the 1994 Beverly Hills Cop III, it seemed as if Eddie Murphy was done with the franchise. Within years, he trash-talked the ending. The franchise and character that helped make him a superstar needed him. Yet, with box office sensations and Oscar nominations on the horizon, Murphy entered a new era. Now, forty years after his first leading role, Murphy returns in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. However, could the comedy actor ever really come home again?

However, Billy (Judge Reinhold) calls Axel about a case involving Jane (Taylour Paige)- Axel’s daughter. By the time Axel gets to Beverly Hills, Billy has gone missing. Nostalgia, when it comes to reviving an old movie series, can be axiomatic. Every so often you see a genuine great piece of nostalgia — like “Creed” or the 2009 “Star Trek” reboot or the 2014 “Godzilla.” But then there’s the kind of nostalgia represented by “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F.” Plotted like a generic police-corruption thriller, lit with cruddy efficiency, pausing every 10 minutes or so for a “light” moment, the movie is no “Beverly Hills Cop.” But it’s better than the ballistic noise orgy that was “Beverly Hills Cop II” (1986) or the clunky retro mess of “Beverly Hills Cop III” (1994), so I guess we should be grateful. And I suspect that a lot of viewers who grew up in the ’80s will be.
Let’s be clear, though, about the level of nostalgia this movie is aiming for. “Axel F.” is studded with moments that are designed to be time-machine triggers,...

Eddie Murphy was only 23 when "Beverly Hills Cop" arrived in theaters in 1984, and the action comedy helped make him a superstar. Murphy's raw talent was already apparent thanks to his work on "Saturday Night Live," a show he joined when he as 19. His feature debut in Walter Hill's 1982 flick "48 Hrs." took him even further, as did his follow-up movie, 1983's "Trading Places". But "Beverly Hills Cop," directed by Martin Brest, helped solidify that Murphy was the real deal; a bonafide movie star. It was a mega-hit, and almost immediately made trash-talking Detroit cop Axel Foley an iconic character. Murphy was so cool, so confident, so suave that he took the character to extreme heights, taking a high concept pitch — what if a tough city cop ended up in posh Beverly Hills? — and creating movie magic in the process. Like Eddie Murphy, Axel Foley was young, hip, and in-demand.

There are a few valid reasons to make a sequel four decades down the track from an action-comedy blockbuster that left an indelible pop-cultural imprint: 1. A smart script with a completely fresh take on a formulaic genre. 2. Writing that digs into the ways an iconic character known for his rule-breaking irreverence adjusts to the social shifts of a different century. 3. New technology that allows for more explosive thrills. 4. The nostalgia of audiences for whom the original holds enduringly fond memories. 5. Lil Nas X agrees to write and perform a song, spinning rap verses around synthmeister Harold Faltermeyer’s catchy theme tune.
Sauntering along 30 years after the third installment opened to scalding reviews and underwhelming grosses, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F justifies its existence only with points 4 and 5. Which will likely be enough to satisfy diehard fans. Directed with journeyman efficiency by first-timer Mark Molloy and written by a committee that...

A renegade cop who refuses to play by the rules or pay any mind to the ungodly amount of collateral damage he causes in the name of saving Los Angeles from its own systemic rot, Axel Foley makes so much sense as the hero of a Netflix movie that it’s hard to believe the company didn’t invent him itself. Maybe that helps to explain why “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” feels sturdier and more self-possessed than your average straight-to-streaming legacy sequel, including Eddie Murphy’s own “Coming 2 America.” Here is a story of — and about — the diminished but enduring power of a classic brand in modern Hollywood (or at least the greater Hollywood area), and the moral of that story boils down to a simple idea: Familiarity is such a powerful force that it can inspire people to forgive pretty much anything.

When first-time feature filmmaker Mark Molloy got the — admittedly, quite wild — phone call from super-producer Jerry Bruckheimer about the possibility of directing the long-gestating fourth film in the “Beverly Hills Cop” franchise, he didn’t have to do much research. After all, the long-time commercial director was a fan of the Eddie Murphy comedy franchise from way back. Like, watching the original films on VHS on the family farm kinda way back.
There was, however, one piece of legwork he opted not to undertake: Watching the third, much-maligned film in the franchise. Based on how poorly “Beverly Hills Cop III” did when it was released in 1994 (including a franchise-worst box office take of $119 million and roundly negative reviews from critics and Murphy himself), Molloy was hardly the only hardcore Axel Foley fan who skipped the whole thing.

Eddie Murphy thought 'Beverly Hills Cop III' was destined to flop after he read the script. The 63-year-old actor considers the 1994 action-comedy film to be the weakest one in the franchise, and Eddie has now revealed that he actually feared for the movie before it was even released. He told ScreenRant: "This is when you can tell a movie's not going to work: when you have one of those lines that you've seen millions [of times] and hundreds of thousands of movies have said this line. "There was one scene where I had Uncle Dave in the back, and he was dying. I was driving, and I said, 'Don't you die on me, man!' How many times have you seen that in a movie? When somebody's dying, 'Don't you die on me!' "If you in a movie, and you scream, 'Don't you die on me,' that...

It was just, 'Axel's coming back now, and he's on a new mission.' "It was like, 'Okay, now this has happened.' It was just the generic things. “They’re developing it,” star Eddie Murphy says of Beverly Hills 5 – mere days ahead of the release of the fourth film, Axel F.
It’s taken almost 30 years for a fourth Beverly Hills Cop movie to come out, but it sounds as though regular star Eddie Murphy and producer Jerry Bruckheimer are attacking Beverly Hills Cop 5 with a bit more urgency.
Days before the latest film, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F comes out, Murphy has said in an interview with Variety that a script for another sequel is in development, adding, “If it comes together, we’ll be doing another one.”
Separately, Bruckheimer said, “We have a couple of stories in mind” for Beverly Hills Cop 5.
It’s a step forward from the 20th June, when Murphy said “I hope so” when asked about the possibility of another sequel.

Thirty years after Beverly Hills Cop III and 40 years after the franchise made its debut, Eddie Murphy, Judge Reinhold and John Ashton are back for a fourth film.
Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F sees Murphy’s Detective Axel Foley return to Beverly Hills after his daughter’s (played by Taylour Paige) life is threatened, teaming up with her ex-boyfriend (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and his old pals John Taggart (Ashton) and Billy Rosewood (Reinhold).
A fourth film has been in development on and off for decades, but it was never the right script. Reinhold said that when Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the first two films, got involved, he felt like the movie may actually happen this time.
“We wanted to use the first one as a template, to be so lucky to reach that level, so that’s what we were after,” Reinhold told The Hollywood Reporter at the film’s Beverly Hills premiere on Thursday.

In a sneak peek clip for Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, Eddie Murphy’s Axel Foley hijacks a helicopter to escape a deadly threat. As Foley and new partner Bobby Abbott (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) race to the roof, Foley demands that Abbott, a former helicopter pilot, steer the chopper off the platform.
“Faster! Shit, this ain’t Spirit Airlines,” Foley says in the teaser. “Let’s go! Let’s go! This shit is supposed to be like riding a bike! You’re suppose to get right in there and know how to do this shit.

The upcoming Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F is being anticipated with anxious eyes as Eddie Murphy returns to his beloved role of Axel Foley, which solidified his status as an A-list star in 1984. It’s seemingly a delicate thing to get right as the nature and quality of Eddie’s movies (and comedy in general) has evolved over time. Even with a director like John Landis, for many, Beverly Hills Cop III just didn’t quite land. While there are a lot of elements in place for this fourth entry, the many stop/starts and years stewing in development hell and a director who hasn’t yet established himself can naturally make fans a bit antsy.

Eddie Murphy is back with a badge for the fourth franchise installment of his beloved series, with “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F.”
The upcoming Netflix film, which teased a first look earlier this year, marks Murphy’s long-rumored reprisal the iconic character Detective Axel Foley. The ’80s-era franchise first began with Foley as a Detroit detective turned temporary L.A. police officer for an uncover mission. Now, after having worked in L.A. sporadically for decades, Foley teams up with his estranged daughter Jane (Taylour Paige) to take down yet another conspiracy.
Along the way, Foley lands a new partner (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and police captain (Kevin Bacon), but his old confidantes, including Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and John Taggart (John Ashton), are still in the mix. Also returning? Franchise co-stars Paul Reiser and Bronson Pinchot.

"This isn't my first time in Beverly Hills..." Ready for a good time in Beverly Hills? Netflix has dropped the full official trailer for Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, the long-awaited next new sequel in the Beverly Hills Cop franchise – which last ended decades ago in 1994 with Beverly Hills Cop III directed by John Landis. This smashing new follow-up (BHC4!) picks up right where things left off with Axel Foley as he returns to his old stomping grounds in SoCal for more mayhem. When his daughter is threatened, he is drawn back to the many opulent environs of Beverly Hills to investigate the untimely demise of a long-time confidant. She & Foley team up with a new partner to turn up the heat & uncover a conspiracy. Eddie Murphy is back as Foley for the fourth time, after first taking on the role in the 1984 comedy classic. "The Godfather Part III," "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines," "Jaws 3-D," "Superman III" ... there are tons of examples of film trilogies that feature a dramatic drop in quality in their third entries. "Beverly Hills Cop III" definitely belongs on that list; the 1994 stinker, directed by John Landis, plopped Eddie Murphy's beloved fish-out-of-water Detroit cop character Axel Foley back in Beverly Hills, but this time, it takes place largely in a ... theme park. Thanks to scripting issues and scheduling problems, the film also broke up the beloved trio of Murphy, John Ashton, and Judge Reinhold, the latter of whom play Taggart and Rosewood, the Beverly Hills police officers who go from being Axel's pesky babysitters in the first movie to lifelong pals and de facto partners in the second. Ashton dodged a bullet by not appearing in the third film at all, and that movie's lousy script didn't do...

If you’re a long-term Eddie Murphy fan, chances are there’s no character of his that you love more than Axel Foley. His Beverly Hills cop is an iconic comedy character, sticking a banana in the tailpipe of your regular strait-laced law enforcement. And this summer, we’ll see Murphy reprising the role in the long-awaited fourth outing, 30 years after the (not-so-beloved) Beverly Hills Cop 3. While the specific release details were being kept under wraps by Netflix, where the film will find its home, they’ve since unveiled an official arrival date for you to mark in your diary.

As Hollywood neared the midpoint of the 1980s, the industry had abandoned the risk-taking ethos of the 1970s and unabashedly embraced formula filmmaking. Stars still mattered, but the pitch was king. Studio executives keen on becoming their generation's Jack Warner, Daryl Zanuck and Louis B. Mayer were through humoring unpredictable auteurs like Martin Scorsese and Hal Ashby. They wanted can't-miss high-concept projects powered by high-wattage stars that could play for months on end in theaters because, despite the skyrocketing value of home video and pay cable channels, theatrical was still king.
"Beverly Hills Cop" traversed a rocky path from inception to production, but producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer doggedly developed and re-developed the project until they paired a 23-year-old comedy superstar with a once-hot director who'd two years prior gotten himself fired off "WarGames." Eddie Murphy’s Axel Foley adventures are coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, as Beverly Hills Cop III gets announced for the format.
2024 is the year that the long-mooted fourth film in the Beverly Hills Cop series finally happens, with Netflix bringing Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F to our screens later this year.
It’s the first time that Eddie Murphy has taken on the lead role since 1994’s ill-fated Beverly Hills Cop III, a film that brought the saga to a shuddering stop when it stumbled at the box office.
