Trailblazer. Icon. Turtle. These are just a few of the words one could use to describe Venus de Milo, a character largely forgotten by pop culture despite being entirely unforgettable.

A joyless exercise in IP mining, “Cheaper by the Dozen” is all the more depressing for its glimpses of unfulfilled potential.
No one really needed to follow up a 2005 sequel of a 2003 remake of a 1950 adaptation of a 1948 autobiographical novel. But if you’re going to attempt to bring this story into the present day, you couldn’t ask for a better team than director Gail Lerner and writers Kenya Barris and Jenifer Rice-Genzuk Henry (“Grown-ish”). And who wouldn’t want to see a charmingly practical Gabrielle Union reign over lots of cute kids and a loving — if lackluster — husband played by Zach Braff?
Other than Braff, who isn’t actually supposed to be playing lackluster, it’s hard to say where everything went wrong. Lerner, Barris, and Henry all work primarily in TV, but that shouldn’t have been an unscalable obstacle. Barris co-wrote 2017’s raucous “Girls Trip,” and...

After turning the Gossip Girl books into a TV phenomenon, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are bringing another young adult series to The CW with Sweet Valley, based on the Sweet Valley High books and the television series. “Sweet Valley is the town everyone dreams of growing up in. And there’s no better example of that promise than Elizabeth Wakefield. But when her missing twin sister Jessica miraculously returns, it reignites a lifelong rivalry,” reads Deadline’s series description. “It falls to new girl Enid Ruiz to discover that someone (or something) is pulling all the strings, but can she convince the twins that putting their personal war aside is the only way to drag Sweet Valley’s dark roots into the California sunshine?” First published in 1981 by author Francine Pascal, the series consisted of 181 books over a 20-year run. The books made the leap to the small screen...

There are layers in the subversive storytelling of “Promising Young Woman.” While on the Filmmaker Toolkit podcast, director Emerald Fennell talked about how, like her protagonist Cassie (Carey Mulligan), she made specific choices to guide the viewer through her black comedy to its unexpected ending.
That applied to the film’s careful use of color, and Fennell’s collaboration with costume designer Nancy Steiner and production designer Michael Perry (who joins Fennell on the second half of the podcast). The DGA-nominated director also made it clear these were also colors and images she personally liked.
“I like ‘Sweet Valley High,’” Fennell said. “I like Paris Hilton, and I like Britney [Spears, making reference to older music videos], and I like pink. I think we still have a very specific idea of how serious things look, how serious people look, how they dress, how serious movies look — you know, wet streets, cigarette smoke, sort of a blue filter...

On today’s Crew Call before Oscar nominations drop on Monday, March 15, we speak with Promising Young Woman director/writer/producer Emerald Fennell and the pic’s production designer Michael Perry on how they created the candy-colored, retro world for Carey Mulligan’s avenging femme Cassie who targets a former medical school male colleague years after he sexually abused her best friend, Nina.
Fennell was drawn to work with Perry given his work on her favorite 1990s teen TV series Sweet Valley High as well as his work on It Follows.
“I saw It Follows, its beauty and cleverness and visual wit just blew me away. Considering that movie was even on a tighter budget than ours was, it looked completely unique in a complete female (way),” Fennell tells Deadline.

It started with a single scene. Filmmaker Emerald Fennell claims to be a “bit of an amnesiac” when it comes to parsing out the origins of her biggest ideas, but she does remember the first moment in which her candy-colored, pitch-black revenge thriller “Promising Young Woman” presented itself to her. It’s a scene that still exists in the film’s finished form, a first feature that Fennell is pleased as punch to report is very close to the big, wild idea she started pitching back in the spring of 2017.
“What usually happens with me is a scene comes into my head first, and for me it was the scene with Cassie on the bed,” Fennell said in a recent interview with IndieWire. “It was this idea of a woman lying on the bed, drunk, somebody taking her pants down and her saying, ‘What are you doing? What are you doing?...

Ben Higgins' quest to be loved enters its second set of dates with a few of the women emerging as contenders or pretenders, while the rest blend together like a casting call for Sweet Valley High. Seriously, there's more blonde hair in this Bachelor field than a Hitler Youth poster.
Ben has narrowed his field of potential wifemates to 17, but his confidence had to take a hit with the voluntary departure of fourth-Lauren Lb, aka "Pound." Sure, she told him the process was overwhelming her, but in reality, he has to wonder if she was just the latest to come down with a wicked case of unlovabenitis.

Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s The Office gave us so much, not least its intermittently excellent Us remake and the many other sitcoms it inspired. Its hand-held single camera style and wryly observed mundanity became so seminal that for a period in 2009, it was technically illegal to launch a new Us sitcom that didn’t emulate them.

Brittany Daniel is kissing and telling! The blonde beauty recently chatted with toofab's Brittany Kyles while promoting the hilarious sequel to "Joe Dirt," "Joe Dirt 2: Beautiful Loser." The comedy takes place right where the first one left off, but now, Joe (David Spade) and Brandy (Brittany) are married and have three beautiful children together. When Joe finds himself unexpectedly transported back in time, he embarks on one ridiculous journey as he tries to get back to Brandy and his family... before it's too late. Check out the video above to see what Daniel's said about reprising her role as Brandy, a possible "Sweet Valley High" reboot and saying goodbye to Bet's "The Game" -- and keep reading for more. While it's been 14 years between "Joe Dirt" and "Joe Dirt 2," Daniel says she's stayed super close with David through the years -- and even considers him one of her best friends.

Talk about some stunning sisters! "Sweet Valley High" alums Brittany Daniel and Cynthia Daniel hit the blue carpet for the premiere of "Joe Dirt 2: Beautiful Loser" in Los Angeles on Wednesday. The twins -- who starred on the beloved series together from 1994-1998 -- looked gorgeous as they posed for pics before heading into the star-studded screening. Brittany, who reprises her role Brandy in the David Spade sequel, stunned in her black halter crop top and a matching high-waisted skirt, while Cynthia looked beautiful wearing a similar baby blue ensemble. While we've rarely seen the 39-year-old actresses at public events together since starring on the show in the '90s, it does sound like the blonde beauties are working on a reboot for the series, which was adapted from Francine Pascal's books of the same name. "There is some talk right now," Brittany told reporters at the premiere.

Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield are coming back. At least they hope to. I can exclusively reveal that Brittany and Cynthia Daniel are developing a reboot of Sweet Valley High, their 1990s television series based on Francine Pascal's book franchise of the same name. "There is some talk right now," Brittany told me last night at the premiere of Joe Dirt 2: Beautiful Loser, a sequel to David Spade's 2001 mullet classic, Joe Dirt. "We're actually going to have some conversations with Francine." The twin sisters, now 39, starred as the Wakefield girls on the show, which ran for four seasons between 1994 and 1997. "That series means so much to my sister and I...

”Animorphs” occupies a very special place in collective 90s kids nostalgia. Along with “Goosebumps,” “Sweet Valley High,” and “The Babysitters Club,” this series of books about five human teenagers and an alien who could turn into a menagerie of animals were devoured religiously in a time before* Harry Potter. *Actually there was some overlap. The covers for “Animorphs” utilized cutting edge 1990s photoshop technology. Which of course means nowadays they are laughably dated and ripe for being mocked by the Internet. As usual, the Internet does not disappoint. #1: Professor Oak is always throwing up obstacles. But McDermitt himself will always give it to you straight, which we learned when he took our EW Pop Culture Personality Test. Watch the video below to find out why he didn't enjoy Pulp Fiction, which TV character he'd date in real life, why he picked up the Sweet Valley High book series when he was young, and why a dog once bit him in the butt.

Twenty years after it first aired in the Us, we celebrate My So-Called Life’s brilliantly written, strongly cast pilot…
From its opening shot, My So-Called Life announces itself as distinct from its glossy Us teen TV peers. Filmed on location using natural lighting and a hand-held camera, the pre-credits sequence is a world away from candy-coloured sets and Malibu beaches. We see two teenage girls messing around on a street, hanging off one another and periodically breaking into fits of laughter. The girls speak directly to camera, addressing an unseen passer-by with a string of goofy tall stories.
One of the actresses - Claire Danes - breaks the chief rule of playing a teenager on American TV by actually being one. The other - A.J Langer - isn’t long out of her teens. With a face free of make-up and as-yet undyed mousy blonde hair, Danes is and looks fifteen,...

Day Two of Ebertfest began early (9 am), with a discussion panel titled “Challenging Stigma Through The Arts”, which focused on Short Term 12 and its depiction of struggling teens. The panelists, a combination of artists, critics, and social work professionals, explored the connection between trauma, expression, and the arts, as well as the progression of the kind of institutions and professionals featured in the film from the ‘80s to now. Brie Larson, the lead of Short Term 12, was particularly eloquent in speaking about her character, her preparation for the film, and the importance of embracing one’s darkness to find strength within perceived weakness. Much of the panel wound up centering on the experiences of the youth outreach professionals and ways of communicating with and helping integrate these young adults into the community. That left half of the panelists out of most of the discussion, which was unfortunate, but...

Brittany Daniel's three year absence from Bet's "The Game" has finally been explained -- and, sadly, it's not a happy reason.
The actress tells People that in the summer of 2011, after experiencing terrible back pain, night sweats and flu-like symptoms, she was diagnosed with stage IV non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
"It happened so suddenly," she says. Soon after her diagnosis, she began chemotherapy and moved into her twin sister (and former "Sweet Valley High" co-star) Cynthia's guest house with her mom.
"There is no way I would have ever gotten through this without my family," she admits. "My family is everything to me and I feel like they saw me through this."
Daniel originally wanted to keep her story private, but now that she's healthy and cancer-free, she hopes her experience might help others. "I want to let people know it is absolutely possible to get through something like this," she says.
