You can’t blame Bill Pullman for feeling hesitant about taking on the lead role in Lifetime’s two-part limited series Murdaugh Murders: The Movie.
It’s not that the SAG-nominated actor was worried about going dark — he’d done so not long ago, and brilliantly, in USA’s The Sinner — he simply just wasn’t aware of the tragic story of South Carolina lawyer Alex Murdaugh, who was convicted in 2023 of murdering his wife and son.
“I didn’t know about him!” Pullman revealed during the THR Frontrunners Lifetime Showcase held June 6 at San Vicente Bungalows in Los Angeles. “Then I asked the people in my life about the case, and they said, ‘Oh, I hate that guy!’ I thought, ‘Ok this is a nonstarter.'”

For only the second time in its 15 year history there is no actor among the honorees for this year’s select group receiving the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences Governors Awards. The AMPAS Board Of Governors have chosen to give Academy Honorary Awards to music legend Quincy Jones and veteran Casting Director Juliet Taylor, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award to British writer/director Richard Curtis, and the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award to producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli. The awards ceremony, always a highlight in the very long Oscar season will take place on Sunday November 17, 2024 at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Ovation Hollywood.

Tom Hanks is known as the ‘Dad of Hollywood’ due to his penchant for choosing good-guy roles in his movies. The actor has worked with acclaimed directors such as Steven Spielberg, Clint Eastwood, Robert Zemeckis, and more in his extensive filmography. He even won the Oscar twice in a row for his performances in Philadelphia and Forrest Gump.
Having established himself as a legendary actor in Hollywood history, Hanks has extensive knowledge in performing and even gave a small exercise for this generation’s most beloved ‘Tom’, Tom Holland. The Spider-Man: Homecoming star was given an exercise that tested his skills by the veteran actor while on The Graham Norton Show.

While Tom Hanks is renowned for his iconic acting skills as one of the best veteran actors in the entire entertainment industry, he is also quite famous for the powerful relationship he shares with his current wife, Rita Wilson.
If anything, their 30+ years of being in love have transformed them into being regarded as one of Hollywood’s most beloved power couples of all time.

But while fans know the duo for what they are today, not many know how it all started. Ironically enough, the beginning of this pair’s legendary friendship before they fell in love has something very close to do with one of Hanks’ best qualities.
In fact, the actor even sported this quality in Forrest Gump and transformed it into one of his most celebrated masterpieces: His storytelling skills!

Dirty Dancing is one of those movies that actually move people to write “most iconic movie couples” lists; not that we’re speaking from experience, of course. The sheer tension and dynamic between Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey gave an entire generation their idea of the perfect couple energy, and they looked stunning together.
9. Meg Ryan & Tom Hanks in Sleepless in Seattle (1993)
The touching and infinitely warm story told by Sleepless in Seattle captivated viewers around the world, but it was the chemistry between Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan that really made it so great. The two stars famously have an amazing relationship and worked together on many movies, fueling fans’ hopes; albeit, they were just friends.

The Star Wars franchise is known for its iconic characters, epic battles, and intricate storylines. But what if we told you that Tom Hanks and his son Colin Hanks almost had a place in that galaxy far, far away?
As the star-studded universe of Star Wars continues to draw in audiences through its galactic tales, isn’t it intriguing to imagine Tom Hanks, the embodiment of American cinema charm, donned the robes of Qui-Gon Jinn? Well, rumors have long circulated that the actor was considered for the role of Qui-Gon Jinn in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, before Liam Neeson eventually got the role.

And to add an even more interesting twist to the story, his son auditioned for the role of Anakin Skywalker in the prequel trilogy.

Very few directors have ever had the kind of run Rob Reiner did as a director between 1984 and 1992. Think about it. This is Spinal Tap, The Sure Thing, Stand By Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, Misery and A Few Good Men. Surely, that run alone would be enough to solidify him as one of the greatest Hollywood directors of all time? Those movies are so good it almost doesn’t matter how much money-losing crap he puts out now…and there is a lot of it… and North isn’t even the worst of it! So how did this man go from making a few great movies that defined and elevated our pop culture on so many different levels to suddenly pumping out nothing but heartless, soulless political flicks (did anyone see Lbj?) and rom-coms that are neither romantic nor comedic?

Robert Downey Jr. in “Oppenheimer” had it easy this year.
He took the early lead in Gold Derby’s official Oscar odds for Best Supporting Actor. He widened that lead in the following months. He then swept the precursor awards. And despite landing in a powerhouse lineup that included Sterling K. Brown in “American Fiction,” Robert De Niro in “Killers of the Flower Moon,” Ryan Gosling in “Barbie” and Mark Ruffalo in “Poor Things,” there was a “near zero” chance of Downey not being called to the stage to accept the Academy Award.
But not every past recipient of the Best Supporting Actor Oscar has cruised to victory like Downey. There have been numerous nail-biters over the years.
I recall one contest in particular from three decades ago. The 1993 fabulous five included first-time nominee Leonardo DiCaprio as the autistic younger brother of Johnny Depp in “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape,” Ralph Fiennes...

Bill Pullman probably isn’t the first actor you’d think would be cast to portray a drug-addicted sociopath who is convicted of killing his wife Maggie and son Paul, as he does playing Alex Murdaugh in the Lifetime two-part docudrama “Murdaugh Murders: The Movie.” This is, after all the same guy who played the heroic President of the U.S. in the 1996 blockbuster “Independence Day,” and his impressive career has found him playing an assortment of characters similarly defined by their inherent decency. This is also a man who has been married for 37 years – to the same woman. Not that Pullman necessarily sees himself as having a brand. “Everybody says, ‘Oh, you do’,” he admits. “But I think I’m available for (the whole of) human behavior. And it’s nice to live on the other side every once in a while.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.

When it comes to complex and challenging roles that require submitting oneself fully to the process, few actors can claim to have achieved what Tom Hanks has. The two-time Oscar winner is synonymous with some of the most iconic characters in films like Forrest Gump, Philadelphia, Cast Away, and many more that have showcased his prowess as a performer.

When searching for powerful and relatable representations of women in film, most people probably don’t turn to the romantic comedy genre first. The leading ladies of romantic comedies typically have a perfect job as a magazine reporter in a stylish big city apartment, where they wake up every morning fresh-faced with a gorgeous hairstyle. A tall and handsome love interest will sneak his way into her life somehow when she least expects it, and they’ll live happily ever after. Unfortunately, life just doesn’t work that way for most women. But that doesn’t mean romantic comedies are unworthy of love from the female film community. They may not be the most prestigious pieces, but hold deep value for women who want to feel uplifted and hopeful when they’re consuming media. Rob Reiner is the multi-hyphenate who has excelled both in front of and behind the camera for over 50 years, starting as an actor before moving into directing. Let’s take a look back at 12 of his greatest films as a director, ranked worst to best.
Reiner was born into the business as the son of performer Estelle Reiner and comedian Carl Reiner, creator of “The Dick Van Dyke Show.” He shot to fame on television with his role as Mike “Meathead” Stivic, the liberal son-in-law to buffoonish bigot Archie Bunker (Carroll O’Connor) on “All in the Family.” The series brought him two Emmys as Best Comedy Supporting Actor (1974 and 1978). His victory, in fact, made the show the first to ever win acting prizes for all four of its leads, with O’Connor and Jean Stapleton prevailing in lead and Sally Struthers in supporting.

It’s an interesting month on HBO and Max this March, as two acclaimed films hit the streamer along with some intriguing original programming.
First up in the movies arena is the streaming debut of Wonka, starring Timothée Chalamet. Oscar nominations were announced in Los Angeles at 5:30 a.m. on Jan. 23. The backlash began by sunrise. Barbie received eight nominations, including for best picture, but where were individual nods for director Greta Gerwig or star Margot Robbie, the A-list architects who constructed a billion-dollar blockbuster out of an $18 plastic doll that was born in 1959? Barbie fans went berserk online, denouncing the Academy for what they saw as a sexist snub. Breathless press coverage of the controversy dominated the news cycle for days, and even Hillary Clinton weighed in to support her shunned sisters.

Everyone could use a good cry now and again. And what better way to get those tears flowing than watching a movie?
Variety caught up with this year’s Oscar nominees at the Academy’s annual nominees luncheon at the Beverly Hilton to find out the last time they cried at the movies.
“I cried at ‘Parallel Mothers,’” said “Oppenheimer” star Emily Blunt. “When Penélope [Cruz] breaks down, it’s so beautiful. I am a crier. I can’t bear to see other people cry. If I see someone cry, I will cry immediately.”
Emma Stone recently rewatched “Sleepless in Seattle,” the 1993 romantic comedy starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. “So much of that movie is heartbreaking,” the “Poor Things” star said.
Sterling K. Brown said he was recently caught off guard when he and his youngest son were watching “Matilda.” “It was his first time crying at a movie,” the “American Fiction” star recalled.

Brian McConnachie, the Emmy-winning writer with the offbeat sense of humor who worked on Sctv Network and Saturday Night Live and appeared in Caddyshack and several films for Woody Allen, has died. He was 81.
McConnachie died Friday of complications from Parkinson’s disease in Venice, Florida, Michael Gerber, editor and publisher of The American Bystander, told The Hollywood Reporter. The duo relaunched the humor magazine in 2015 after McConnachie — an original staff member at National Lampoon — originally got it going in 1981.
“Every day, on every page, he has been our North Star,” Gerber said in a statement. “From his days at National Lampoon, Brian was ‘every comedy writer’s favorite comedy writer,’ crafting an unmistakable one-of-a-kind laid-back eccentricity that inspired generations.

With its uniquely ’90s title and concept (thanks to America Online), You’ve Got Mail has now reached the 25-year anniversary mark. It marked the third collaboration between Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, following the acclaimed Sleepless in Seattle, which itself followed the less-acclaimed Joe Versus the Volcano. But, by the time Hanks and Ryan agreed to star in You’ve Got Mail, the chemistry they’d shared in the previous two films had earned them comparisons to some of the great couples from Hollywood’s Golden Age, including the gold standard of Spencer Tracy and Audrey Hepburn. While Hanks might not have thought that was the proper comparison, he couldn’t deny that he and Ryan shared something special on the screen. Hollywood is overflowing with stories about films that took years of blood, sweat and tears to bring to the screen. Brian Helgeland’s Finestkind represents one of the longest kinds.
The Oscar-winning screenwriter of Mystic River and veteran director of such films as Legend, 42, A Knight’s Tale and Payback finished the script when he was 28. He’s now 62. “The joke is that I wrote it before Toby Wallace and Jenna Ortega were born and Ben Foster was 10 years old. It’s very strange, but everything happens for a reason. I just had to wait for this whole cast to grow up so I could cast them,” he explained at the film’s West Hollywood premiere on Tuesday referring to his actors who star opposite Tommy Lee Jones, Ismael Cruz Cordova, Aaron Stanford, Scotty Tovar, Tim Daly, Lolita Davidovich and Clayne Crawford.

Julia Roberts is an icon of the romantic-comedy genre, but there’s one famous rom-com the Oscar-winner happened to turn down: Nora Ephron’s 1998 classic “You’ve Got Mail.” Roberts revealed the scoop during a recent appearance on Bravo’s “Watch What Happens Live.”
Ephron’s film memorably paired Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan in the story of business rivals unaware they are falling in love with each other online. “You’ve Got Mail” marked the third Hanks-Ryan romantic comedy after “Joe Versus the Volcano” (1990) and “Sleepless in Seattle” (1993), the latter title also being directed by Ephron. Had Roberts taken the role, it would’ve extended her 1990s rom-com streak that already included hits like “Pretty Woman” (1990), “Notting Hill” (1999) and “My Best Friend’s Wedding” (1997).
Asked by a fan to name some roles she has turned down in career, Roberts stressed that she does not regret any of her choices. She said any...

At the end of Meg Ryan’s beguiling and grown-up new romantic comedy What Happens Later, a simple dedication card shows on screen that says “For Nora.” And for star, director and co-writer Ryan, that says it all. After an eight-year absence from the screen, Ryan has returned, both in front of and behind the camera, to a genre that made her a huge star thanks also in large part to the late great Nora Ephron, whose trio of collaborations with Ryan — When Harry Met Sally (directed by Rob Reiner), Sleepless in Seattle and You’ve Got Mail — truly defined what a joyful experience a romantic comedy could be when in the right hands.
Ryan clearly learned at the altar of a master, and it is all on display in this lilting, wistful, magical and wise confection, a two-hander about an accidental reunion of two college lovers some 30 years older. They make a new,...

It makes sense that Meg Ryan would want to direct a romantic comedy like “What Happens Later” — her performances in “When Harry Met Sally,” “You’ve Got Mail” and others just about define the genre. So she knows a thing or two about capturing that spark between two fledgling lovers.

For more than four decades, Meg Ryan has been a household name, thanks to her roles in iconic films like "When Harry Met Sally," "You've Got Mail," "Sleepless in Seattle," and so many more. Throughout most of that time, she's balanced her career with being a mother. Ryan is mom to son Jack Quaid, whom she shares with ex-husband Dennis Quaid, and daughter Daisy True, whom she adopted in 2006.
Over the years, Ryan has been open about the positive impact her children have had on her life and how they continue to help her become the person she's always wanted to be. In a 2008 interview with InStyle (via Yahoo!), Ryan spoke about how her work as a mother is the most important thing in her life. "But most of all, what I'm ambitious for in the 12 hours a day that I'm awake is my kids' happiness," she said. "I just am.

Meg Ryan is “enchanting.” It’s hard to think of a better word to describe her than the one Nora Ephron used in the “You’ve Got Mail” script — a word repeated four times in the first 30 minutes of the 1998 film.
My ears perk up when Ryan uses it now, nearly 25 years later. We’re sitting across from each other in a suite at the Four Seasons hotel in Beverly Hills, meeting to speak about her new film — her first in eight years. She’s the co-writer, director, executive producer and co-star, alongside David Duchovny, of “What Happens Later,” an enchanting romantic comedy about ex-lovers who find themselves stranded by a snowstorm.
There’s no denying that Ryan, 61, is a movie star. Only, she doesn’t seem to know it: She pulls her overcoat tight around her body to cover up any ostentatiously fancy garments she may have underneath. Throughout our conversation,...

Meg Ryan, 61, was spotted on a night out in New York City after news that her upcoming rom-com’s release date has been pushed back.
In a green dress and Dr. Martens Oxfords, with a stylish messenger bag, Ryan and her friend wandered around the busy Soho neighborhood. The actress looked happy despite how her rom-com’s release date was pushed back another month.
Ryan was recently in the news after fans expressed shock over photos of her at the premiere of Michael J. Fox‘s documentary where she looked utterly unrecognizable.
The film’s production company, Bleecker Street, announced that the premiere of Ryan’s highly anticipated return to rom-coms, What Happens Later, was delayed until after the release of Taylor Swift’s Era Tour concerts movie.
Ryan wanted to avoid competition with Swift’s movie at the box office. Originally scheduled to premiere in theaters on October 13, the...

(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
There are some Cinderella stories in the history of the box office. We can look at something like the ultra-low-budget "Skinamarink" earlier this year, which made more than $2 million after it became a genuine viral conversation starter online. Produced for just $15,000, it's a nice little success story for director Kyle Edward Ball. Such things happen from time to time in defiance of the industry norms. But the biggest Cinderella story of all time, in every sense, happened in 2002 when "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" had a run for the ages on its way to becoming the biggest rom-com ever. Take that, "Runaway Bride."
Even for those who have absolutely no interest in this particular genre, the journey of this movie is unquestionably fascinating.

Korean-Canadian writer-director Celine Song’s tremendous feature debut tells the poignant tale of childhood sweethearts separated by fate and thousands of miles
This supremely confident feature debut from Korean-Canadian writer-director Celine Song is a spine-tingling gem – a tale of not-so-brief encounters between star-crossed souls, played out over a period of 24 years. Combining the aching yearning of Wong Kar-Wai’s In the Mood for Love with the casual intimacy of Richard Linklater’s Before trilogy, it paints a picture of unresolved affection as delicate as it is profound, interweaving timeless themes of fate and providence with more playfully down-to-earth musings on happenstance and shapeshifting identity. The result, which has one foot in South Korea and the other in North America, feels at times like an impossible mashup of Davy Chou’s Return to Seoul and Nora Ephron’s Sleepless in Seattle, shot through with a stoical melancholia that recalls the final...
