Ralph Fiennes is best known for playing Voldemort in the Harry Potter movies, although that a little reductive when it comes to an actor of his reputation: he's been nominated for an Oscar three times, for Schindler's List, The English Patient and last year's Conclave. He also starred in a movie called The Return, about the final chapters of The Odyssey where Odysseus returns home from a long journey to find everything much changed. And for that role, he apparently needed to get shredded to hell and back, as various images floating around X attest:

Oof. Beginnings of months are difficult in terms of how many titles on any streaming service we are forced to say goodbye to. Each month, Netflix brings in many new items, meaning some older ones have to leave. Some months are worse than others.
May isn't worse than other months unless you are a fan of a couple of franchises. If you love Spider-Man, we have bad news for you. If you are addicted to watching Thomas & Friends, we have more bad news.
Perhaps the worst part is that a lot of comedies are saying goodbye. Wedding Crashers, the Fockers films, and a couple of the Friday flicks are going away. So are some Oscar-worthy films, such as Schindler's List and Whiplash.
A large number of titles are leaving Netflix this week (April 26 through May 2)
The weird 1978 version of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is also leaving.

The Andor panel at Star Wars Celebration 2025 in Japan included several cast and crew members on stage, including Diego Luna. However, the real surprise came later.
The attendees got to see the second season's first episode before its official release on Disney+. Some of the fans who were present at the viewing and others who got an opportunity at an early screening shared their opinions on social media.
Jason Concepcio wrote, "Andor Season 2 is outrageously good."
Star Wars Holocron gave a more detailed breakdown after watching all 12 episodes of season 2. "This season is more mature and relevant than any other Star Wars project," they said. "The show explores difficult topics never explored before in Star Wars, and handles them with incredible grace and thoughtfulness." They also added what the Andor cast and crew have been saying for a while: Season 2 changes our perspective on Rogue One and A New Hope.

If you're ever having a bad day or feeling like you're not good enough, remember that Steven Spielberg has made some pretty bad movies. That's not to disparage the Beard. He's an iconic director and a huge reason for Hollywood's astronomical success in the 1970s, '80s, and '90s. Indeed, he belongs on the Mount Rushmore of great filmmakers -- but he's far from perfect. Yes, even Steven freaking Spielberg is not immune from making a bad call now and again. Somehow, every time he seemingly hits a low point, like immediately after 1990's "Hook," he bounces back with a vengeance, namely the one-two punch of "Jurassic Park" and Best Picture winner "Schindler's List."
He's not the only one. James Cameron, Ron Howard, Peter Jackson, and George Lucas proudly stand atop this list of 15 great movie directors who made terrible films. As you keep reading, remember that we do...

Marvin Levy, who spent five-plus decades handling public relations for Steven Spielberg and his films en route to becoming the only publicist to receive an Oscar, died Monday, an Amblin representative announced. He was 96.
Levy worked for MGM in New York and for Columbia Pictures in Hollywood, where he began his relationship with Spielberg on Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977). The soft-spoken executive became a “Spielberg Whisperer,” offering counsel to the filmmaker.
In introducing Levy at the Governors Awards in November 2018, Tom Hanks noted that the publicist also advised Spielberg on films including E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (1982), best picture winner Schindler’s List (1993), Saving Private Ryan (1998) and Lincoln (2012).
“Now, all those movies are pretty damn good, but I don’t think any of us in this room would have bothered seeing them without the efforts of Marvin Levy,” a cheeky Hanks said before the publicist came to the stage to accept his Oscar.

“Marvin’s passing is a huge loss for me and our industry writ large. When it came to handling the press, he had no peer.”
Spielberg continued, “To the media-and the world of exhibition, Marvin was the face of Amblin. We were opposite ends of the movie-making process. Every time I reached the end of production on a film, Marvin’s work had only begun. Through countless films, tv series, Amblin events, awards campaigns and our public relations strategy—this is where Marvin came alive.

Not Just a Goof made me realize I’m a sucker for a good oral history of great films and television series. You know the kind—the ones The Hollywood Reporter writes about The West Wing, Schindler’s List, and The Office—pulling back the curtain on all the juicy rumors and offering insight into cultural touchstones of Americana.
One of my favorite writers, Bilge Ebiri, wrote a fascinating history of the misunderstood animated film The Emperor’s New Groove for Vulture—a must-read for any cinephile or toon-head. That’s precisely the feeling I had while watching Not Just a Goof, a heartwarming and captivating true story about those who loved their craft.
Yes, it is a glimpse of a craft that has been taken over by a digital footprint that lacks character and skill.

Liam Neeson James Bond ( Photo Credit – YouTube )
Liam Neeson once revealed that a heartfelt ultimatum from his late wife, Natasha Richardson, was the only reason he never seriously sought for the James Bond role in GoldenEye (1995). Though, Neeson made it clear that he never received an official offer for the role. He did express interest when approached informally by the franchise’s producer, Barbara Broccoli, following his acclaimed performance in Schindler’s List.
In a candid conversation with Rolling Stone published at the time, the then-70-year-old actor explained that Broccoli had contacted him a few times to gauge his interest in the coveted role. Neeson admitted he had been open to the idea, having just gained significant recognition in Hollywood. However, while filming Nell in the Carolinas, his then-girlfriend and soon-to-be wife Richardson made her stance unmistakably clear. She told him flat-out, “If you play James Bond, we’re not getting married.

The Naked Gun Official Trailer Is The Single Most Important Trailer Of The Year (And Maybe All-Time)

To kickstart their very Mission: Impossible focused CinemaCon presentation, Paramount first debuted the official trailer for their upcoming action-comedy The Naked Gun, a movie they are cheekily describing as "The single most important Naked Gun movie since the other Naked Gun movies."
It's a short teaser, featuring leading man Liam Neeson, as he intervenes during a bank heist, but you're going to have to just watch it to believe it. We also learn that he's playing Frank Drebin Jr., the son of Leslie Nielsen's Lt. Frank Drebin, who the film will honor and it seems like they'll do it in typical Naked Gun fashion.
The film will provide some much-needed humor to an action-packed summer, opening in the wake of Marvel Studios' The Fantastic Four: First Steps and opposite the animated sequel The Bad Guys 2 and the body horror film Together. It's likely Fantastic Four will repeat as the box office champ,...

In a decade that saw some of the most unforgettable biopics of all time, Frank Marshall’s filmAlive often finds itself slipping through the cracks of recognition. While its competitors like Schindler’s List and Braveheart were basking in widespread acclaim and box office glory, Alive quietly earned its place as one of the most realistic and emotionally devastating portrayals of survival in cinema.
Yet, despite its quiet presence, it remains an underappreciated masterpiece, often overshadowed by its bigger biographical peers. Unlike the biopics from the same era, Alive is a slow-burning exploration of survival, focused more on the drawn-out reality than on heroic dramatics. But what it may lack in grandness, it more than makes up for in its intimate depiction of one of the most extraordinary survival stories in modern history.

There was never a point after the blockbuster triumph of "Jaws" when it could be said Steven Spielberg needed a hit, but in 1992, coming off a string of critical and commercial disappointments in "Empire of the Sun," "Always," and "Hook," his future as a filmmaker did look a bit cloudy. His last two certified box office smashes at this point were "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" and "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade," and while both were the work of an energized director, he clearly had loftier ambitions. And when the critics failed to realize he'd made a stone-cold masterpiece in "Empire of the Sun," he had cause to wonder if they were going to irrationally hold his unprecedented rush of success against him forever.
We know how this played out. Spielberg eventually reinvented the blockbuster with "Jurassic Park," and finally, in the eyes of critics, proved himself...

Liam Neeson has appeared in over 100 feature films since making his big-screen debut 47 years ago in an adaptation of John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress." He spent the 1980s making his bones via supporting performances in high-profile movies like "Excalibur," "The Bounty," "The Dead Pool," but it was his lively portrayal of a hell-raising hill person in the Patrick Swayze revenge vehicle "Next of Kin" that made Hollywood perk up and take notice. The following year, Sam Raimi cast Neeson as Peyton Westlake aka Darkman, but it wasn't until Steven Spielberg entrusted the Irish actor with the title role in "Schindler's List" that he was off and running as a movie star.
When Neeson surprised moviegoers in 2008 by thriving as an action star in "Taken," he leaned heavily into the bit. Two sequels followed, as did "The A-Team," "Unknown," "Non-Stop," and "Run All Night." For more serious-minded fans of Neeson's work,...

Martin Short said his popular character Jiminy Glick, the entertainment journalist blowhard known for syaing whatever is on his mind and derailinghis interviews with Hollywood A-listers, was always completely improvised — except for the time he made exception for a segment with Stephen Spielberg.
“They didn’t have a clue,” Short said of his improvisational nature with his roster of celebrity guests. If you grew up watching movies in the mid-2000s, chances are you think of Liam Neeson as some sort of perpetually grizzled action hero engaged in a never-ending quest for vengeance. It's no secret that the Irish star has spent the latter part of his career fronting a series of middling actioners that, if you removed the names and flimsy plots, would basically all be the same film. (We've even ranked the 10 best "old man Liam Neeson action films" right here.)
It all began with 2008's "Taken," which began Neeson's action star makeover and was actually a pretty good movie that set a precedent for similar films moving forward. March 17 is...you guessed it, St. Patrick's Day. The day when Americans celebrate their Irish heritage. Yeah, it might be an important day elsewhere in the world, but Ireland does not celebrate in the same way.
That is fine because the great island has given us a lot of acting talent for a total population of just around seven million. The great actors per capita for the Irish are likely better than nearly any other populace. That means the culture is ripe to produce excellence.
Of course, not every wonderful actor from the Irish island (we are including Northern Ireland here as part of the complete island) has a film featured on Netflix. Several do, however. In fact, the actors below have more than one film streaming on Netflix, so there is a lot to watch on St. Patrick's Day.

When the trailer for "Taken" first started making the rounds in 2008, no one thought it was terribly out of character for Liam Neeson to star in a straight-ahead action flick. With films like "Darkman," "Rob Roy" and "Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace" on his resume, the 1993 Best Actor nominee for "Schindler's List" certainly seemed comfortable making genre movies. The surprise was the five years that led up to it. After failing to snag a well-deserved second Best Actor nomination for "Kinsey" in 2004, he segued to supporting parts in "Kingdom of Heaven," "Batman Begins" and "Breakfast on Pluto," which suggested he was either getting passed over for lead roles, didn't fit the star type for whatever was being offered, or entering the character actor phase of his career.
After the moody Western "Seraphim Falls" failed to catch on with moviegoers (despite the intriguing pairing of Neeson and Pierce Brosnan), next up was "Taken.

Amazon has taken creative control of the James Bond franchise, wresting control from the Broccoli family, the family that has overseen the 007 movies for decades. There is some speculation as to what this means for the franchise, as many presume that Amazon, following the current filmmaking trends, will try to launch an expansive, multimedia cinematic universe. Some fear the onslaught of tiring over-commercialization that will no doubt be attached to Ian Fleming's noted spy, but others may be excited that a new James Bond movie is coming at all.
The last Bond film, "No Time to Die," was released in 2021, and it brought the five-film Daniel Craig cycle to a definitive end. This means the next film will have to recast 007 with a new actor, and speculating which actor could potentially play James Bond -- in any generation, really -- is a speculative sport played by cineastes everywhere.

Liam Neeson is, if nothing else, a very candid interview subject. Sometimes he's candid to a problematic fault. Regardless of how you feel about the man, however, you cannot accuse him of giving canned answers, which is what renders too many interviews unworthy of a reader's time.
With a film acting career that spans over 40 years, stretching back to his portrayal of the knight Gawain in John Boorman's Arthurian "Excalibur," the Irish-born Neeson has put together a career that prompts many questions. He went Hollywood early, and seemed stuck in a rut acting in forgettable films like "Suspect," "Satisfaction," and "The Good Mother." I didn't really take measure of him as a performer until he played Patrick Swayze's vengeful, incredibly lethal hillbilly brother in "Next of Kin." His high-pitched voice and not-entirely-hidden Irish lilt is actually perfect for an Appalachian hill person, and even though the film is just a studio programmer,...

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival and TCM will team up this fall to present a gala evening of excerpts from the scores to “iconic” Jewish-themed films, the organizations announced Wednesday.
The Oct. 20 concert was announced during the closing night of the 2025 Atlanta Jewish Film Festival, via the showing of a video heralding the event featuring TCM’s Ben Mankiewicz, who will host the program this fall. The evening will take place as part of the 25th anniversary season for the film festival; a previous concert of Jewish film music took place 15 years ago during a 10th anniversary celebration.
“I’ve been coming to the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival for years, and I couldn’t be more excited for this extraordinary celebration of film and music,” Mankiewicz said in a statement. “Iconic scores from classic Jewish cinema performed live? That’s a night you don’t want to miss.

It’s a rare type of cinephile who wasn’t introduced to the idea of film as more than just idle entertainment by the ritual of the Academy Awards. And it’s an even rarer type of cinephile who didn’t soon thereafter vehemently reject the Oscars as the ultimate barometer of a film’s artistic worth. Those of us who started off with The Godfather, Schindler’s List, All About Eve, or Casablanca all eventually got around to Out of Africa, Around the World in 80 Days, The Greatest Show on Earth, Cimarron, and Cavalcade.

Ralph Fienneswas disappointed at this year’s Oscars, when his highly acclaimed movie Conclavelost out in several big categories to Emilia Pérez, The Brutalist, and Anora. However, the biggest night of the Hollywood awards season has had a huge effect on the movie’s resurgence on Peacock. After being on the platform for over two months, Conclave has jumped straight back into the number one spot on the streamer’s chart.
While there is little doubt that Fiennes, and other Conclave nominees – including the movie itself in the Best Picture category – would have been happier walking away with a statuette or two, the film’s resurrection on streaming as people flock to check out what the movie is all about is a very welcome consolation prize.

The recent era of Steven Spielberg's career has been punctuated by a turn toward more adult and dramatic films, often centering around real-world political events that serve as a perfect allegory for modern issues. Starting with the immense success of movies like Saving Private Ryan and Schindler's List, his historical films like Bridge of Spies, The Post, and Munich represent a quieter and more contemplative side of one of the best directors of all time.
Arguably Steven Spielberg's best piece of historical fiction came with his fantastic 2012 drama Lincoln, a biopic centering on the 16th President's attempts to simultaneously end the Civil War and pass the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, forcing the end of the Confederacy while also securing the end of slavery in America. Exclusive: I thought I’d seen it all in trade journalism, but the piranha-like frenzy on Kathleen Kennedy and the successor speculation that followed Matt Belloni’s Puck report that Disney was putting her out to pasture is a new one on me. Belloni for years has been beating on Kennedy like she owes him money, and this week he reported Kennedy was retiring. I recall he essentially did the same thing more than a year ago, and yet here she still is, producing The Mandalorian movie and prepping the Shawn Levy-directed Star Wars film that Ryan Gosling is circling, as well as numerous other film and streaming projects with A-list participants.
Still, the trades followed with gusto, dishing speculative reporting on who might succeed Kennedy. The takeaway was chaos and that Kennedy was being pushed. The reality is different and far more orderly.

Ralph Fiennes has carved a reputation as one of the greatest actors of a generation, and has been part of both some of the world’s biggest franchises – as M during the last movies of Daniel Craig’s James Bond tenure, and Voldemort in the Harry Potter movies – and quieter independent and intimate movies, such as his newest Oscar contender, Conclave. When you're one of the greatest directors in film history, letting go of a project becomes a common occurrence. This was one of the challenges that Steven Spielberg faced when, after much deliberation, he had to set aside "Rain Man" in favor of another major project in the works. The 1988 movie starring Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise is regarded as one of the finest films in both of their careers — one to which Spielberg dedicated a considerable amount of time before passing it on to another filmmaker. While Barry Levinson was telling the story of Charlie Babbitt (Cruise) reuniting with his estranged and autistic brother, Raymond (Hoffman), Steven Spielberg was off on another whirlwind adventure with one of cinema's most beloved heroes, who this time was bringing his dad.

Most moviegoers have preconceived notions of what makes a World War II film. More often than not, they'd envision a cinematic epic or a tense thriller like Saving Private Ryan or The Guns of Navarone, respectively. Other times, they'd think of a generational period drama not unlike Flags of Our Fathers, Schindler's List, or more recently, Oppenheimer. Generally speaking, audiences and critics expect World War II films to be big. This is what made Hell in the Pacific stand out in one of the most crowded film genres around.
Unlike its more famous wartime contemporaries, John Boorman's World War II film was small in just about every regard. At most, it only had three vast but empty locations. More importantly, it only starred two actors: Lee Marvin and Toshiro Mifune. What's more, the two were stuck on the same island for most of the film. Not only were Marvin and Mifune perfectly cast,...

Universal is shifting its untitled Steven Spielberg event film away from “Avengers: Doomsday” and “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” and straight into the “Scary Movie” reboot’s territory. The untitled Spielberg movie was originally set for a May 15, 2026 theatrical release; the film will now wait nearly another month, releasing wide on Friday, June 12, 2026.
The shift is not all about Spielberg, IndieWire has learned. The June slot was previously occupied by another untiled Universal event film, that one directed by Daniels Kwan and Scheinert. The Daniels film is now undated, but a new release date will be announced shortly. It has a script, a person with knowledge of the situation told IndieWire, but needs a little more time. Internally, the Spielberg shift is being looked at as a win-win for both films.
It’s not like there is no competition set for Spielberg’s new date — it’s just now less of a crossover with potential movie-goers.

The influence of Hayao Miyazaki is something that can’t be measured through words. His projects have helped the anime industry reach a level of success that competes with some of the greatest movies in Hollywood. In fact, even the biggest directors in Hollywood respect Miyazaki and are inspired by the work he has done in his anime movies.
The best example of this is the widely famous director, Steven Spielberg, who is known for his films like Schindler’s List, Jurassic Park, Saving Private Ryan, War of the Worlds, etc. The American filmmaker has been a big fan of Miyazaki and his films, and he never shied away from expressing how much he loved Miyazaki’s films.
In fact, according to him, the greatest car chase ever in history came from a Miyazaki film. The name of the movie was Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro, and it was Miyazaki’s feature directorial debut.

Spoiler alert: The crazy, unpredictable Oscar season? Still crazy. Still unpredictable.
Fresh off a one-two punch weekend where “Anora” cleaned up at the PGA and DGA Awards, the BAFTAs decided to stir the pot with their own take on the race. If history tells us anything, it’s that BAFTA can be either a crystal ball or a red herring.
In 2024, every BAFTA winner (except for visual effects) went on to win the Oscar, making it the most predictive year in recent memory. The year before, however, BAFTA charted its own path — only “Everything Everywhere All at Once” editor Paul Rogers repeated at the Oscars. So, with the final Oscar voting closing on Tuesday, Feb. 18, let’s break down the key takeaways from BAFTA’s curveballs and what they could mean for Hollywood’s biggest night.
