A bio-series about iconic ranchera singer Chavela Vargas starring “La Reina del Sur” lead Kate del Castillo is in the works. Colombia’s Caracol Televisión and indie Miracol Media are co-producing “Chavela,” which will trace the tumultuous life and career of the legendary singer.
Del Castillo will transform into Vargas, the mythical woman in the red poncho, who boldly rejected the conventions of her time, paving the way for a unique and groundbreaking journey in the landscape of Mexican popular music.
Her internal battle with personal demons, heartbreak, and alcoholism propelled her to become a trailblazer, stepping onto the stage to sing Mexican songs in a jorongo, the traditional Mexican poncho, and pants. With a guitar pressed against her heart, a tequila in hand, and a pistol holstered on her belt, she mesmerized audiences, captivating both men and women alike.

Penélope Cruz first met Pedro Almodóvar when she was cast in his 1997 film, “Live Flesh.” Almodóvar had originally wanted her to star in “Kika,” but Cruz was too young for the role. The director promised her he would write a character for another movie, and he did. It would mark the beginning of their many collaborations, the most recent of which is “Parallel Mothers.”
“He told me about it 18-20 years ago when we were doing press for ‘All About My Mother,'” but he never talked about it again,” Cruz says. When the pandemic hit, the actress got a call from Almodóvar, who said he was writing the story for her. Almodóvar didn’t recall their earlier conversation, but Cruz did. “I don’t forget anything he shares with me,” she laughs.
Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast recently spoke with Cruz about “Parallel Mothers,” working with Almodóvar and much more.

The 33rd entry in an on-going series of audiovisual essays by Cristina Álvarez López and Adrian Martin. Mubi's retrospective, The Art of Transgression: The Cinema of Almodóvar, is showing August 18 – October 19, 2019 in the United Kingdom.Artistic and media representations of every kind take pride of place in the films of Pedro Almodóvar. All such vignettes mirror the main action and comment on it in various ways. But Almodóvar juices an even greater value from them: he generates a plot from their gradually knit or unfolded interconnection, as the years of the story pass and the various pieces fall into place. Kika (1993) is an extreme entry in this auteur’s filmography, an outrageous satire that temporarily abandoned the sentimental vein in his work. For that very reason, it reveals the formalist aspect of his storytelling structures all the more clearly. The Flower of My Secret (1995) took another path: its rich...

If you're bored with your new choices on Netflix, thought we'd give a shout out to a few options for only 99¢ on iTunes at the moment. Stronger, with Jake Gyllenhaal (who won our Bronze for Best Actor for last season) is their movie of the week. But in their often changing "Movies You Might Have Missed" section, also 99¢, they're currently offering five Pedro Almodóvar movies, Meryl Streep in She-Devil (which the Month of Meryl column hits next Thursday), the Glenn Close classic Fatal Attraction, David Fincher's Se7en, and, um, a Chinese remake of the unimprovable 90s romcom My Best Friend's Wedding... but at least it stars Shu Qi so it *might* be worth 99¢
And still more streaming options if you're not in the mood for Dwayne Johnson's Rampage this weekend or you've already see the delightful / problematic / futureOscarnominee Isle of Dogs. Amazon Prime has added a 55 wide movie...

Above: Spanish poster for Pepi, Luci, Bom (Pedro Almodóvar, Spain, 1980). Artist: Ceesepe. Is there a contemporary filmmaker with a more vivid graphic sensibility than Pedro Almodóvar? His always distinctive films, with their bold colors, deliberate blocking and impeccable set design, often look like cartoons or magazine spreads come to life. Following suit, the posters for his films have always been a testament to his aesthetic, whether in his scrappy underground days or his far more polished later years. With his 20th feature film, Julieta, opening December 21, and a Museum of Modern Art retrospective beginning in New York next Tuesday, I thought it was high time I featured the best artwork of Almodóvar’s 40 year career.Any cinephile in their twenties might be forgiven for thinking that Almodóvar is the most establishment of arthouse directors: perennially fêted by Cannes and the New York Film Festival, winner of two Oscars, and, since the late 1990s,...

Back in 1990, Pedro Almodóvar was coming off a string of critical and commercial darlings thanks to “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown” and “Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!,” two female-charged stories with distinct comedic voices. Producer Scott Rudin, meanwhile, was shepherding Paul Rudnick’s script about a singing nun into production, changing drafts numerous times and trying and failing to land Bette Midler as a star. Shockingly, Rudin almost landed Almodóvar as the director of “Sister Act,” but the director’s own self-doubt and skepticism of Hollywood turned him away.

Manuel here. A new Pedro Almodóvar film is always cause for celebration. Yes, even when his last one (I'm So Excited) left many of us cold. Initially titled Silencio, the film is now called Julieta, making it only the second time he's named a film after its heroine. Let's hope Julieta makes for a more pleasant and engaging character than Kika, though.
The trailer is wonderfully oblique, with very little dialogue, so those of you who would otherwise need English subtitles can still bask in the visual sumptuousness of Jean-Claude Larrieu's photography. The D.P. is one of many newcomers to the Almodóvar family: both of his leading ladies, Emma Suárez and Adriana Ugarte (sharing the title role) are making their Almodrama debuts. But don't worry, actress Rossy de Palma and composer Alberto Iglesias are also onboard, giving Julieta the feel of vintage Pedro. Indeed, the visuals and what...

But Pedro Almodóvar has never made a bad film as such. There have been some that didn’t quite come off, some that were a bit same-old-same-old – Kika, Bad Education – but nothing shameful.

There are many things that make Steven Spielberg's 'E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial' -- thirty years old this year -- a magical masterpiece: a sensitive script, fantastic special effects (it's often easy to forget the title star is a mechanical puppet), John Williams' uplifting score. But one of the most over-looked aspects is the cast.
Eschewing big name stars and established child actors, Spielberg discovered a raft of talent, young and old, that do much to make 'E.T.' such an emotional experience. Here are their 'E.T.' stories and what happened next....
E.T. is 30 years old - hard to believe, but true
Henry Thomas (Elliott Taylor)
That was then: "I used to think 'If I mess this up, what's going to happen?'" recalls Henry Thomas about his days as the lead in 'E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial'. "'Are they going fire me? I'm nine years old.

With his selection as jury member for the coming Cannes film festival recently announced, it's about time we acknowledged Gaultier's work on such films as The Fifth Element and The Skin I Live In
For as long as movies have been made, costume designers have been indispensible to creating a film's look and defining characters. Yet prior to this year, the last costume designer to sit on the Cannes jury was the spectacular Eiko Ishioka, who made her mark on films such as The Cell and Immortals, way back in 1996.
Who better, then, to thaw the 16 year fashion chill at Cannes than Jean Paul Gaultier? The designer's selection as a jury member for this year's film festival not only serves as a reminder of what Gauilter himself has offered cinema over the years but also draws attention to a relationship between fashion and film that is as old as the medium itself.

Cine Latino covers, well, all things relating to Latino culture and the movies, every Friday. Pedro Almodóvar’s The Skin I Live In continues to make headlines, having just recently won the BAFTA award for Film Not in the English Language and receiving 16 Goya Award nominations. News of Almodóvar’s latest film project was confirmed on Monday by his brother and longtime producer Agustín Almodóvar. The project, tentatively called Brief Lovers, is a comedy a la Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (1988), a genre Almodóvar last visited in 1993 with Kika. Filming is scheduled to begin this summer and rumor has it Javier Cámara will take the lead role. Cámara previously worked with Almodóvar in Talk to Her (2002) and...

Pedro Almodóvar's upcoming The Skin I Live In, which debuted to mixed response at Cannes and stars Antonio Banderas and Elena Anaya, follows a haunted plastic surgeon as he experiments with synthetic skin on a mysterious woman (the trailer is posted below). This film marks a reunion between Banderas and Almodóvar. The actor made his breakthrough in Almodóvar’s films in the 1980s, but last worked with the Spanish director in 1990’s Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!, and despite being offered a part in 1991’s Kika, he embarked on a Hollywood career. Banderas tells The New Yorker's Richard Brody that his reunion with Almodovar was as dramatic and tense as their films: He had created me. I was in a way his thing. He saw ...

Although Tron (1982) is often cited as the first use of computer animation in mainstream film, there is far more to its significance than what we see on screen. As an artistic influence on everything from fashion to music, Tron has created a cultural cosmos we now term its ‘legacy’. All this thanks to a 29 year baby boomer who dared to dream idealistic…
Creator and director of the original Tron, Steven Lisberger, freely admits that his film, the very idea in fact, was born out of hippie ideology; the creation of unity between the analogue and digital world:
We were idealistic. The Gen-Xers are much more realistic, but at the same time my generation is certainly guilty of being too unrealistic. We dreamt so big and we failed to follow through. But the challenge is for the Gen-Xers to be realistic but to not give up totally on idealism.

Your cinematic birthdays for December 1st. This post is dedicated to frequent reader/commenter Chris Na Taraja who celebrates the big 4-0 today. Happy Birthday, Chris!
1521 Takeda Shingen, Japanese warlord who Kagemusha tried to impersonate. Oopsie. I've actually never seen that Akira Kurosawa picture. How quickly should I rent it?
1913 Mary Martin, broadway star of Peter Pan, The Sound of Music and South Pacific fame. Those famous roles hit silver screens, but without Mary
1935 Woody Allen, legend (abundant posts)
1940 Richard Pryor, influential comedian
1945 Bette Midler the divine. In a fit of complete absence of budgeting sense I nearly purchased a flight to Vegas and a concert ticket last month. Just because. I've never seen her perform on stage but I did used to love her in the movies. Particularly: The Rose, Beaches (so underrated... weepies can't get no respect) and Big Business
1951 Treat Williams enduring B lister. Among the highlights: Hair,...

Penélope Cruz became an actor because of Pedro Almodóvar—twice. The first time was in 1990, when Cruz was a young girl growing up in Alcobendas, just outside of Madrid, and happened upon the director's "Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!," a wacky love story about a former porn star and her kidnapper. She was already a fan of Almodóvar's offbeat sensibilities, but this one had a profound effect on her. "That was the day I decided to look for an agent," Cruz reveals. Her Reign in SpainCruz was only 14 when she attended a cattle call held by agent Katrina Bayonas and found herself armed with sides from "Casablanca," along with 300 other people. Bayonas wouldn't even see her. "She sent me away. She said, 'You are too young. Come back next year,' " Cruz recalls. "I came back three days later, and she said it again. I said, 'I am not too young.
