Narrowing down any kind of list of music videos usually means separating the meaningful expressions of musical ideas from the flashy gimmicks. The best ones that you’ll see below manage to work in tandem with the songs, each elevating the other. Sometimes, this might mean that a great song has a leg up — it’s hard not to be wowed by something paired with a song that means a lot to you or has been stuck in your head for months.
But it works the other way, too. It’s easily as possible for a track that may not have clicked the first few listens to suddenly come alive with the right visual pairing.
Some of these will be easier to match to this calendar year than others, but each of them take a distinct stylistic approach to the songs they complement. Whether simple, elaborate, or in that area in between,...

MaryAnn’s quick take… A hilarious ode to talentless passion. James Franco gives the bizarre Tommy Wiseau depth without solving his mystery, but skips a deserved zing at Hollywood. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
I don’t think you need to have seen the 2003 cult film The Room to appreciate The Disaster Artist, director and star James Franco’s hilarious ode to the talentless passion that birthed it. But I was glad that I had finally seen it for the first time just before I attended a screening of Artist. Because I’m not sure that I would have believed Artist’s depiction of the astonishing awfulness of The Room — Franco reproduces essential scenes from the film in all their crummy glory — if I hadn’t already witnessed the horror for myself.

The Johnstons are the world’s largest known family living with achondroplasia, the most common form of dwarfism, but they never let their size define them.

Khloe Kardashian is getting real.
The 32-year-old reality star opened up about everything from marriage, to body image, to Caitlyn Jenner and sister Kim Kardashian's robbery in the latest issue of Es Magazine -- where she also shows off her fit physique in a Good American jacket and curiously, no pants.
Watch: 'Kuwtk': Kim Kardashian Struggles With Return to Public Life as Kanye West's Unpredictable Behavior Continues
If her lack of clothing says anything about her interview, however, it's that she's not hiding anything -- even when it comes to Kim's scary Paris robbery.
Es Magazine
"I get really angry when people blame her for her robbery -- I think that is the most irresponsible accusation," Khloe told the magazine. "I don't care how little or how much you have, nobody deserves to be violated and robbed and assaulted and traumatized. I got very frustrated with that and [the suggestion that] 'Oh, this was scripted'...

Jeffrey MacDonald has fought a nearly 40-year fight against his murder convictions in the slayings of his wife and two young daughters, in 1970. But he hasn’t been alone in his claims of innocence, which will go before an appeals court later this month.
MacDonald’s wife, Kathryn, has worked alongside Jeff’s friends to advocate for his exoneration. She runs a website about the case. The case was featured on Monday night’s season finale of People Magazine Investigates, on Investigation Discovery.

Is this truly the end?
The title card reading "The End" would seem to indicate without a doubt that, yes, the two part finale event comprised of Penny Dreadful Season 3 Episode 8 and Penny Dreadful Season 3 Episode 9 was actually the series finale.
As disappointing and downright traumatizing as that would be, I have to admit that these two hours did nicely tie up nearly every plot point in the series. It felt very series finale-ish.

First, the elephant in the room (review) – Vanessa died. Voluntarily. At Ethan's hand. It was heartbreaking and tear-jerking, but ultimately, it made sense.
We'd already seen Vanessa reckon with what she was. We'd already seen her come to terms with the fact that she could never be a "normal" woman. Nor did she want to be, any longer.

‘Tis better to have loved and lost…? If that’s what you’re selling, Once Upon a Time‘s Regina probably isn’t buying, not so soon after burying another great love.

In 1960, Jean-Luc Godard’s first feature film, Breathless, would make him an icon of French cinema, inaugurating a career that has consistently expanded society’s definitions and expectations of cinema. That film alone would have reason enough to consider him an important filmmaker, but Godard went on to direct fourteen more features through 1967, culminating with his attack on bourgeois culture, Weekend.
Following this extraordinary run of films, Godard found himself at a moment of great change. His romantic and artistic partnership with Anna Karina had ended, to be replaced with a new (but short-lived) marriage to Anne Wiazemsky, who would serve as a bridge to the current youth culture. Godard’s politics had also changed considerably since the 1950s. His conservatism, a relic of his parents’s politics, had been replaced with an interest in Maoism and an increasing distaste for anything evoking America. (Classic Hollywood cinema initially got a pass,...

The last few years have not been easy for Dr. Jennifer Arnold and her husband Bill Klein, stars of TLC's hit reality show The Little Couple.
After getting the good news that they were able to adopt their daughter Zoey, 3, from an orphanage in India, they soon received the very bad news that Arnold was diagnosed with a rare type of cancer.
The couple are now opening up to People about the difficulties they faced dealing with cancer and introducing Zoey into their lives – a transition that did not go as smoothly as they'd hoped.

It's going to take a while before this feels normal, isn't it? Friday (September 28) marked a new time period premiere for "The Amazing Race," which kicked off its 25th installment far from the Sunday 8 p.m. home in which viewers have become accustomed to football/golf/basketball delays throughout the year. That means that instead of having Sunday come to an abrupt end in the late afternoon as I wait for "The Amazing Race" to start, a normal Friday workday just never ends. So... Yay! Friday's "Amazing Race" premiere had the disadvantage of following a very good "Survivor" launch on Wednesday. I say it every year, but there's just not enough time in a single hour to properly introduce a full assortment of reality show contestants and also deliver satisfactory and fun challenges. So Wednesday's "Survivor" got to be 90 minutes and, perhaps as a result, I finished the premiere with...

This is a talk given by French director of photography Caroline Champetier at the La Roche-sur-Yon International Film Festival in October 2012, originally published in two parts on the festival’s site (www.fif-85.com). This translation is being published with their kind permission. This year's festival will take place from October 16-21, Kelly Reichardt will be the guest of honor. Many thanks to Emmanuel Burdeau, programmer of the festival, Jordan Mintzer and Caroline Champetier.
Caroline Champetier: I’ve always tried to take a step back from what I’m doing. The more I work, however, the less I’m able to deal with this exercise. I just finished production on Claude Lanzmann’s The Last of the Unjust and have barely said goodbye to David Teboul, a young director who I worked with on Cinq avenue Marceau (2002), a film I think very highly of and that’s about Yves Saint Laurent’s last collection.

It’s been more than 14 months since Ann Curry’s unceremonious exit from NBC’s Today, and now Matt Lauer is lashing out at the way the situation was handled in the media. The morning show’s longtime anchor hurls some verbal salvos in a new magazine interview. “The way the media treated what happened with Ann Curry was a disappointing learning experience,” he told Esquire. “I was disappointed by the laziness of the media, the willingness to read a rumor, repeat that rumor, and treat it as a fact.” Even though the show’s then-ep Jim Bell defended Curry’s ouster, several outlets cited Lauer as the heavy. And the show’s continued ratings slide even led to NBC brass reaching out to CNN’s Anderson Cooper to replace him during the summer. That came weeks after Lauer reportedly offered to resign amid the Curry fallout. But back to...

Atlanta's six-man metal combo Woe, Is Me (the comma is intentional) is carving a memorable swath across the nation, thanks to their famously manic live shows (with a heavy emphasis on audience participation) and an infectious fusion of bottom-heavy riffs, melodic hardcore, electronic atmospheres and roof-raising anthems. So far this year they've toured with Of Mice and Men; next month they'll be playing Soundwave in Australia, followed by several UK shows with Pierce the Veil; and this summer, they'll be joining the legendary Vans Warped Tour... all of them featuring songs from their latest album Genesi(s).
But before that next avalanche of shows breaks loose, we asked the band to drop by FEARnet and chat about their onstage vibe, the song “Walking Dead,” and their strategy for dealing with the inevitable zombie apocalypse. Like a double-barrel shotgun blast to the chin, True Blood pulled the trigger last night on a new season of supernatural insanity and wasted no time in splattering grey matter all over the country kitchen cabinets.

Nine films are nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards this year, begging the question: who deserved a tenth spot on that list? "Oscars 2012: 10 Spot" answers that question, as the MTV Movies team highlights some of 2011's greatest films and argues why they deserved a nod as the tenth Best Picture nominee.
My colleagues have made wonderful cases for several other qualified Best Picture nominees this year; "50/50," "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" and "Bridesmaids" are definitely deserving of recognition, but none of them top the cinematic achievements of the "Harry Potter" franchise, specifically "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2."
To be clear, I'm lamenting the lack of recognition for the nearly perfect eighth and final Potter film, but we Potter fans cannot deny the fact that the franchise as a whole deserved Best Picture consideration. With "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King...

I have a girl crush on Carey Mulligan.
Of course, this single-sided love affair has been going on since 2009 when she was spotted all over New York City with then boyfriend Shia Labeouf, filming "Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps" and prepping for a very busy awards season following the success of "An Education."
Without sounding like a stalker, I've had a few close calls at meeting her. I've passed her on the street, but was completely unprepared and therefore didn't have the courage to stop her for a chat. I spotted her outside the 2010 National Board of Review Awards. We mingled in the same crowd at Cipriani during "Wall Street 2" after-party, and I once saw her leaving another party with Emilie de Ravin.
I'd assumed all these misses meant our stars were never meant to align and I would have to suffer the fate of never having met one...

It’s a hard job, but someone’s got to do it. With filming of Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises now having moved to Los Angeles, a new batch of photographs showing Anne Hathaway in full Catwoman get-up have appeared online and muggins here drew the short straw and has to write about them.
Woe is me.
So, what do these latest pictures show? Well, a lot more than the official photograph that was released back in August, that’s for sure. Seen here as she scampers around between takes Hathaway’s costume appears to have a few more feline inspired details than could be seen in the earlier image and the combination of tight leather, stilettos and mask certainly ensure that this latest look is in keeping with previous incarnations of the character while also adhering to the more realistic tone of Nolan’s Batman films.

And even though she thought it was funny, she did make sure to fix the situation as soon as possible: “As soon as I was done, I double side-taped, so the rest of the day I had no mix-ups.”
Do you think it was a big deal?

SyFy’s Being Human is an American take on the acclaimed British series of the same name and believe me, when I first heard of this, I was wary about it since I am a huge fan of the original series. For those of you out there who get off on “Woe is me! Lawd what did I’se do to be so black and blue?” black movies have I got a winner for you. On January 4th Lionsgate will release on DVD The Lena Baker Story starring Tichina Arnold (from Martin and Everybody Hates Chris) Beverly Todd and Michael Rooker who is Hollywood’s go-to guy for playing racist Southern rednecks, just like he did recently on AMC’s The Walking Dead.
The film tells the story about Lena Baker, the only woman to be executed in the electric chair in Georgia only to be pardoned 60 years later. The film was made over two years ago and I don’t know of any theatrical showings the film might have had, but the extreme downbeat nature of the story no doubt made it hard for the film to get any kind of domestic theatrical release.

Conspiracy Theory presents a world divided into elites and Joe Sixpacks, where the hidden masters of the universe plot against you and me.
Seeing the invisible is exhausting. -- Aude Amiel (Aude Amiot), Woe is Me (Hélas pour moi) (1993) When Conspiracy Theory with Jesse Ventura premiered last December, it drew 1.6 million viewers, truTV's biggest audience ever for a new series. This comes as little surprise, as the show (all episodes now available online) seems perfectly attuned to a political environment that's spawned the 9/11 Truthers, the Birthers, and the Tea Partiers.
