I believe Jeff Bridges is one of the most charming actors of the last 50 years, and I'm not alone. Pauline Kael went one step further by calling Jeff, in an oft-quoted line, "[maybe] the most natural and least self-conscious screen actor who ever lived." I don't know if Kael harbored any sort of attraction toward Bridges, but I can't claim that my appreciation of him is entirely platonic.
He's not only a fine figure of a leading man (with an even finer head of hair), but he also possesses an easy charisma that has bolstered his screen presence from "The Last Picture Show" in 1971 all the way to "The Old Man," his recent Hulu show. If Bridges has ever given a bad performance, please enlighten me because I have yet to find it among his many credits. Instead of any further hagiography, here is a breakdown of Jeff Bridges' best movies.

Attention all horror fans! If you’re in the mood to celebrate a summer full of screams, Amazon Prime has you covered. The streaming service is adding a ton of genre movies to its selection this month, including supernatural superhero flicks, time traveling psychological thrillers and renowned occult classics.
Below, we take a look at some of the more high profile horror features coming soon to a streaming box near you:
Hellboy (July 23)
Don’t say we didn’t warn you. This year’s much-maligned Hellboy reboot is headed directly to Amazon Prime, less than three months after it unceremoniously left theaters. Maybe streaming from your living room, surrounded by a bunch of friends with a couple of beers in hand is the best possible way to view this. Besides, it’ll be a nice primer on the character before Netflix reboots the series a third time in the near future.

The plot thickens … and at a nice pace too.
Apparently, I’ve just read, that Lightfields is only a five-part series which is annoying (see here) however, it gives me the opportunity to write a proper, in-depth, analysis of every episode. If you haven’t yet read my review for the first episode, here it is: http://whatculture.com/tv/itvs-lightfields-review-episode-1.php
Anway, for the second episode: Firstly, in the 1940s world, not too much is happening except the aftermath of Lucy’s tragic death. Her funeral takes up much of the first quarter of the episode. It’s all pretty slow moving, except the fact that Eve and the American heart-throb, Dwight, are throwing each other a lot of meaningful glares which is …. erm, exciting. However, this is counterbalanced by the 1970s time strand which seems to be moving at lightspeed. So, overall, the episode chugs along nicely,...

It grabs hold of a very special place that we all have [...]...

"White Walls Say Nothing," a new feature length documentary about public art and activism in Buenos Aires, recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to complete shooting, and we've got the exclusive trailer. Here's the official synopsis: Buenos Aires is a complex, chaotic city. It has European style and a Latin American heart. It has oscillated between dictatorship and democracy for over a century, and its citizens have barely known political or economic stability. Throughout Buenos Aires' turbulent history, successive generations of activists and artists have taken to the streets to express themselves, through words and through art. This has given the walls a powerful and symbolic role. They have become the city’s voice. This powerful tradition of expression in public space; of art and activism, has made the streets of Buenos Aires into a riot of colour and communication. Rock of Ages has critics singing his praises, but given that Cruise is one of the hardest-working actors in the business, what are his charges in the court of public opinion?
Tom Cruise has all the qualities of a great movie star, except relaxation. Most of the greats – Bogart, Mitchum, Hanks, Willis – seem so at ease on screen you could balance a golf ball on the end of their nose. Cruise has never once lived up to his name: he guns it, every time. He approaches each role like a Chinese gymnast approaching the bars.
Critics may have pummelled his new eighties-retro musical, Rock of Ages, but they have all been holding up a "10" for Cruise's performance as Stacee Jaxx, a dissipated rock legend attempting a comeback after rumors of Satanic religious activity have driven him from favor.

From stoner to alien to all-American hero, Jeff Bridges immerses himself in every role. Here, his friends, co-stars and directors uncover the man behind the movies
Loyd Catlett
Stand-in, stunt double, assistant and/or actor in all Bridges's films since The Last Picture Show (1971)
I met Jeff on The Last Picture Show, which I had a small part in, and we hit it off really well during the rehearsal period and started hanging out together. He was trying to polish his southern accent for the film, so he was taking his cue from mine. I stayed in Los Angeles after we finished looping, and started pursuing an acting career. One day, while talking with Jeff on the phone, I mentioned that there weren't any parts coming my way; he suggested, since he was going to Europe to start a film, perhaps he could help if I was interested in being a stand-in for him.

In the Alamo programming office, movies are sort of our thing. We watch ‘em, we fight about ‘em, and sometimes we even book ‘em for our theatres. We bring you the greatest and most bizarre movies from the past 100 years, and also highlight some of the greatest achievements in new cinema, too.
It’s a tough job…especially when it comes time to narrow down our favorites at the end of each year. But we do it all for you.
The lists below represent the most powerful and/or entertaining films of 2010, according to Alamo programmers Tim League, Lars Nilsen, Zack Carlson, Henri Mazza, Kayla Williams, Daniel Metz, Bret Neuman, George Bragdon, and Caitlin Stevens. We hope you have some time on your hands, because you’re going to want to read everything.

For years, there was no sign that the public loved Jeff Bridges. Yet he developed into maybe the best mature actor in America
Some of us have revered Jeff Bridges for decades – since his good-natured young studs and chumps: Duane in The Last Picture Show; the boxer who keeps getting knocked out in Fat City; and, with Barry Brown, as drifters and small-time thieves in Bad Company. It was said that Bridges was a natural, the closest we had to a second Robert Mitchum – a world-weary, handsome presence, who declined to fall for the lofty values thrown around in American stories. It was important to Bridges that he didn't seek important parts. He was seldom caught acting or breaking a sweat. He was happy to play off situations and other characters. The films were not all good or demanding, but Bridges was building a consistency all the more admirable in...

As mobile giving explodes, charities from Human Rights Campaign to Mothers Against Drunk Driving are courting young people this holiday season by asking them to make fast, anonymous donations through cell phones. Brian Ries shows how easy it is.
There was a moment in January of 2010, in the dark days following the devastating earthquake that had toppled the buildings of Haiti, when it seemed everyone and their Facebook friends were giving $5 or $10 donations by text messaging "Haiti" or "Yele" to a five-digit shortcode on their mobile phones.
Related story on The Daily Beast: How Cellphones Change Lives
Around $43 million-$45 million of the total funds raised to help the country rebuild came via mobile phone donations, as nearly 40 different campaigns took advantage of a new technology where anyone could send money by billing their gift directly to their wireless bill to charity. It was being called "mobile giving," and as devastating at it was,...

I have a proclivity for zombie stories, I find the commentary on how people would react to a situation in which other humans (often loved ones) will turn on them fascinating, not to mention the myriad of ways the "not infected" will survive and perhaps ultimately rebuild a society once the brain-eating stops. From the interview-style of the novel World War Z to the brilliant comedy of Shaun of the Dead, the creative ways in which the concept of the dead rising to eat the living can be spun has always been appealing to me. So it's not coincidence that I've come across many the zombie-based web series over the years. I in fact wrote about an upcoming one of them just the other day. One of my top five web series of all time continues to be American Heart, a George Romano-esque comedy (yes, it exists) about a group...

Jeff Bridges is arguably the most underrated great American actor since the late Robert Ryan. A performer of incredible range, whose myriad of characterizations over the past 30 years leave the filmgoer with a continued sense of awe and admiration, Bridges' refusal to fit a mold on-screen might be the very thing that has kept him from becoming a conventional movie star. It's also the thing that has kept his work so fascinating, and so brilliant.
