Can an old-fashioned monster movie still work in the 1980s? The dedicated cast for this overachieving chiller takes its story of ‘Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers’ in directions most punk-era horrors do not.

Stuart Gordon’s debut feature, Re-Animator, isn’t just one of the best horror movies of the 1980s, but also one of the few rare perfect horror comedies ever made. Alongside Evil Dead 2, the original Re-Animator essentially helped invent the splatstick subgenre and announced Gordon as one of the most exciting voices in horror, plus, it turned genre royalty Jeffrey Combs and Barbara Crampton into stars overnight. There’s almost no way it could be outdone in its sequel, 1990’s Bride of Re-Animator, though it’s not for lack of trying.
Brian Yuzna, producer of the first film, stepped into the director’s chair for the follow-up, which finds med student Dan Cain (Bruce Abbott) and Dr. Herbert West (Jeffrey Combs) escaping to Peru months after the bloody and tragic events of Re-Animator. They continue to conduct their reanimation experiments on soldiers injured and killed in the midst of a bloody civil war,...

Vengeance is mine, sayeth the Lord – and many horror films to boot. Payback has always been a constant theme, whether it’s a sinister spirit avenging murder, or a maniacal parent repaying camp counselors for not watching her handicapped child. The meteoric rise in popularity of video games and personal computers at the turn of the 80’s, married with ancient evil, brought a modern edge to this shopworn trope. A sympathetic tale of comeuppance, Evilspeak (1981) serves up its revenge under the computer screen’s warm glow.
Released by Moreno Films, first in Japan in August of ’81 and February of ’82 in North America, Evilspeak nearly made back its 1,000,000 Us budget opening weekend stateside. A few good reviews trickled in, comparing it favorably to the high school horrorfest Carrie (1976). Regardless of comparisons, it stands as a unique antique of a burgeoning time in technology and a potent payback tale.

With WolfCop out now on disc, Ryan takes a look at how werewolf myths have faded in and out of cinema history...
It might seem strange, from our interconnected, know-it-all 21st century perspective, that people really did once believe that werewolves existed. Legends of wolf-men date back to antiquity, but really began to bite into society’s fear centres in Europe of the Middle Ages.
Take, for example, Peter Stumpp, a 16th century man whose strange story was related in a pamphlet published shortly after his death. A resident of a small town in Cologne, Stumpp claimed to have been given a belt of wolf skin by the Devil, which when worn, gave him the ability to transform into a wolf. In this form, Stumpp said he’d killed and eaten a dozen or so people over the course of 25 years - crimes described in grisly detail in that old pamphlet.

Film-maker behind Pineapple Express in talks to shoot Abi Morgan adaptation of Laura Ingalls Wilder's books
David Gordon Green is in talks to direct a big-screen transfer for the American children's literary classic Little House on the Prairie, reports Deadline. The film adaptations's screenplay would be delivered by Britain's Abi Morgan, screenwriter on Phyllida Lloyd's The Iron Lady and Steve McQueen's Shame.
Gordon, who has graduated (some might say regressed) from small-town indie dramas such as George Washington and All the Real Girls to Hollywood stoner comedies such as Pineapple Express and Your Highness, is said to be at an early stage of negotiation. There are, as yet, no casting or other details.
Laura Ingalls Wilder published eight semi-autobiographical books in the Little House on the Prairie series between 1932 and 1943. They tell the story of a frontier family battling to make its way in the wilds of...

When Lucio Fulci concluded The Beyond with the words "And you will face the sea of darkness, and all therein that may be explored", he might as well have been referring to the banner year of 1981.
Whatever your genre poison, 1981 delivered it in spades. Elsewhere, Satan's son reared his ugly head for a final conflict while David Cronenberg explored factions of warring psychics with Scanners. After investigations from the Us Secret Service and the FBI, a man in Southern California was charged for stealing a copy of a movie and spreading it on the internet. What movie? "The Love Guru." Jack Yates of Porter Ranch, California, faces some harsh penalties after attempting to shift blame to others. Lying, allegedly, to the FBI could earn Yates up to five years in prison while the movie piracy itself carries the potential of a fine and up to one year in prison. Yates was an employee at Los Angeles Duplication and Broadcasting, where he was asked to make a copy of "Love Guru" for client Paramount. The studio's intention was to supply the copy to "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" so it could air a clip. The FBI, armed with surveillance footage supplied by Ladb, said Yates made two copies, and video shows him concealing one copy...
