Louis Gossett Jr., best known for his acclaimed roles in An Officer and a Gentleman and Roots, has died at 87 years old. He was the first Black man to win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.
Gossett’s first cousin Neal L. Gossett revealed to The Associated Press that the actor died on Thursday night (March 28th) in Santa Monica. No cause of death was given, but Gossett announced that he had prostate cancer in 2010.
Born May 27th, 1936 in Brooklyn, New York, Gossett Jr. began acting in high school and debuted on Broadway when he was just 17 years old. In 1959, he played the role of George Murchison in A Raisin in the Sun, making his feature film debut a few years later in the movie adaptation of the play.
After returning to New York City and becoming a Broadway star, Gossett Jr. landed a breakout TV role in the 1977 ABC miniseries Roots.

Well, this is a bummer. The great Louis Gossett Jr., star of An Officer and a Gentleman, Roots, Diggstown, Jaws 3D, Iron Eagle, and so many more classics, has died at age 87. According to his obit in THR, no cause of death was immediately revealed, but the actor was treated for prostate cancer in 2010, and also battled Covid-19 back in 2020.
If you grew up in the eighties and nineties, Louis Gossett Jr was one of those faces you saw everywhere. He was in high demand as a character actor, winning an Oscar for playing Richard Gere’s tough but compassionate drill instructor in An Officer and a Gentleman. If you haven’t seen that movie in a while or remember it as a sappy romantic drama, I’d urge you to watch it again. It’s actually a pretty gritty, R-rated drama, and it climaxes with a nifty martial arts battle between Gossett and Gere,...

Earlier this week, we caught word that Universal Pictures is moving forward with a new entry in the Jurassic Park / Jurassic World franchise – which is no surprise, since the Jurassics and Fast & Furious are the studio’s two big moneymakers. What’s interesting about this new sequel is the fact that the screenplay is being written by David Koepp, who previously wrote the original Jurassic Park and its follow-up The Lost World: Jurassic Park. Now paleontologist and evolutionary biologist Steve Brusatte has taken to social media to confirm that the project is moving forward – and he knows, because it’s so far along that he has already signed on to be the dinosaur expert consultant on it. That’s a job Brusatte also had on the previous movie, Jurassic World Dominion, where he was consultant alongside paleontologist Jack Horner, who has been a consultant on all six Jurassic movies to date.

Updated, 4:54 Pm: A Chicago-area rapper identified by authorities as a person of interest in the Fourth of July parade shooting has been arrested.
Deadline will not identify him.
One of his music videos, for the song “Toy Soldier,” features crude, stick-figure-like animation of a man firing a long gun at people and later lying face-down in a pool of blood after apparently being shot by police. The accompanying lyric is: “I just want to scream/F*ck this world/Livin’ the dream.”
He also has an IMDb page that lists him as the writer, director, composer, producer and actor in a pair of music videos. In one, he is rapping on a set made to resemble a small classroom. He is seated at a desk and reaches into his backpack; the screen goes dark, and a gunshot-like sound is heard. When the video returns, he is on his knees and falls to the floor.

While the other streaming services set up recurring franchises, Hulu has opted to get a bit more experimental with its original offerings in August 2021.
Hulu’s list of new releases this month is highlighted by three original series concepts with promise. Reservation Dogs premieres on August 9. Co-created by Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok), this story will follow four indigenous teenagers in Oklahoma as they stave off boredom and adulthood. Next up is Nine Perfect Strangers on August 18. This miniseries, based on a book of the same name, is produced by David E. Kelley and features staggering cast of Nicole Kidman, Melissa McCarthy, Luke Evans, Samara Weaving, and more.
Only Murders in the Building is likely the biggest thing to look forward to in August though. Premiering on August 31, this comedy stars Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez as three true crime-obsessed friends who stumble into a true crime of their own.

Rob Reiner’s 1986 film “Stand by Me” remains a touchstone coming-of-age classic 35 years later. While the film served as a breakout vehicle for Wil Wheaton, who starred as 12-year-old aspiring writer Gordie in the adaptation of Stephen King’s 1982 novella “The Body,” it wasn’t without a lot of pain for the actor. In a recent interview with Yahoo! Movies touting the film’s 35th anniversary, Wheaton (now 48) revealed how his difficult experiences as a budding child star in Hollywood, and the emotional torment inflicted by his parents because of it, shaped the role.
“I didn’t want to be an actor when I was a kid. My parents forced me to do it, my mother made me do it. My mother coached me to go into her agency and tell the children’s agent, ‘I want to do what mommy does,’” said Wheaton, whose mother Debra was an actress...

One of Australia’s most distinguished screenwriters, Cliff Green (Picnic At Hanging Rock) died on Friday following a long illness. He was 85. Here, Mac Gudgeon and Roger Simpson pay tribute to his life and career.
Cliff Green was a pioneer in Australian screenwriting and a central figure in the Australian Writers’ Guild’s (Awg) early development. His television credits include his celebrated quartet, Marion, inspired by his time as a school teacher in the Mallee, and the sprawling adaptations, Power Without Glory and I Can Jump Puddles. His screenplay for Peter Weir’s Picnic At Hanging Rock remains a landmark in Australia’s film renaissance of the 1970s.
Though one of Australia’s most sought-after writers, Cliff never hesitated to give his time to the guild in an era when the organisation, with only two full-time employees, depended entirely on the efforts of its members and the leadership of its most prominent practitioners.

The production company behind two of this month’s biggest reboots, Fantasy Island and The Invisible Man, are reportedly eyeing another blast from the past to modernize for today’s audience. According to our sources – the same ones who said a Swamp Thing movie is in the works, which Bloody Disgusting has since confirmed, and that a Scream reboot is happening, which we now know to be true – a remake of the 1991 film Toy Soldiers is in development, with Blumhouse at the helm.
The talented folks at Blumhouse Productions are known for putting out hit films like Get Out, Upgrade and successfully reigniting the Halloween franchise. Now, it looks like one of their next challenges will be bringing back Toy Soldiers. Jason Blum is set to produce the project, and negotiations are also underway with Queen Latifah to both star in and produce the remake.

The small screen is always an interesting place for sequels to land; much less money usually means a smaller vision, but excitingly it can also provide a different one. I’m a big sucker for “what if?” scenarios and Revenge of the Stepford Wives (1980) builds off the downbeat tone of the 1975 theatrical film The Stepford Wives to arrive at a place of satisfying resolution. Yes, you can take that title literally.
Originally airing Sunday, October 12th as part of NBC’s The Big Event, Revenge duked it out with The ABC Sunday Night Movie while CBS was kissing all the grits with their impenetrable lineup of Alice/The Jeffersons/Trapper John, M.D. That’s all well and good if you were in the mood for snarky comedy and lifesaving surgeons, but if you wanted to see suppressed women get their comeuppance, NBC was where you wanted to lay your bonnet that night.

Eminem‘s daughter Hailie Jade Scott has served as the rapper’s muse throughout much of his career, lighting the inner fire that elevated him from a dishwasher on the outskirts of Detroit to one of the biggest musical forces of a generation. More than just motivation, his daughter has provided lyrical inspiration, and even a guest verse or two over the years. Though relations have occasionally been strained between Eminem and Hailie’s mother, Kim Scott—as evidenced in a number of his songs—his bond with Hailie has never wavered.

Under Siege! Toy Soldiers! Cliffhanger! Speed! And the many other films that owe Die Hard a debt of gratitude...
The release of Die Hard in 1988 inaugurated a new trend in Hollywood action movies in which a new breed of everyman action hero faced off against terrorists in confined location. Between the one-man army action flicks of the eighties and the superheroes of the noughts, the Die Hard model was the action formula of record.
One of the main reasons for this success was that the formula was familiar yet flexible. All you needed was a location, a vaguely everyman hero, and a villain intent on (mostly) financial gain. Although the heyday of these movies was over twenty years ago, their influence endures to this day. Let’s take a look back…

★★★★☆ Something of a forgotten gem, 1993's Matinee sits between Gremlins and Toy Soldiers in director Joe Dante's oeuvre. John Goodman steals the show as Lawrence Woolsey, a cigar-chomping director specialising in William Castle-esque theatrical gimmicks. Under the cloud of the Cuban Missile Crisis, he arrives in Key West, Florida to promote his latest atomic-themed B-movie. On paper, Woolsey is a cynical manipulator, exploiting people's well-founded fears about nuclear apocalypse to make a quick buck, but Goodman brings Woolsey to life with an endearing sincerity.

Like a lot of folks, my movie watching is heading more towards a digital future rather than a physical one – and that’s despite my love of Blu-ray and all the cult movies the format has brought us thanks to the likes of Olive Films, Kino Lorber/Scorpion Releasing, Scream Factory, Vinegar Syndrome et al.
Whilst many will decry abandoning discs for digital files there are some bonuses, especially for genre fans here in the UK. The New Xbox One Experience will be with us on November 12, and with it comes the highly-anticipated backwards compatibility update. Come the service’s release, 104 games from the Xbox 360’s vast back catalogue will be available to play on the Xbox One, says Mike Ybarra, Director Of Program Management for Xbox.
Today, I’m happy to unveil to you the first 104 Xbox One Backward Compatibility games. Exclusive: the co-writer and producer of Turner & Hooch explains how it got its infamous ending.
This article contains major spoilers for Turner & Hooch
If you've not seen Turner & Hooch, don't scroll below our spoiler squirrel. Once you're past the picture, we start talking about the ending of the film...
Arriving a couple of months after K-9 at the Us box office was the Tom Hanks-headlined Turner & Hooch. You know the one: Hanks gets paired, reluctantly, with a slobbering dog. Comedy ensues.
Well, almost.
Unlike K-9, Turner & Hooch comes with a harsh ending where the dog in question - that'd be Hooch - bites the bullet. In what's ostensibly a Disney family comedy.
So then: what happened.
Daniel Petrie Jr, one of the writers and producers of the film, told us that "we all did" when we asked him who killed the dog. That is, the filmmakers wanted that ending.

From writing Beverly Hills Cop to directing Toy Soldiers and Dawn Patrol, we have a chat with writer/producer/director Daniel Petrie Jr.
Daniel Petrie Jr comes from a family with movies in its blood.
His father, Daniel Petrie Sr, directed films such as Resurrection, Cocoon: The Return and A Raisin In The Sun. His mother, Dorothea, produced movies, wrote novels and acted. And then his brother, Donald Petrie, directed Cocoon: The Return, Miss Congeniality and Grumpy Old Men.
Yet Daniel Petrie Jr is just as busy. His screenplays include Turner & Hooch and Beverly Hills Cop (for which he earned an Academy Award nomination), whilst his directorial debut was the much-loved (by us especially) Toy Soldiers.
As his new film as director, Dawn Patrol (starring Scott Eastwood) lands on DVD, he spared us some time for a chat about his career. Starting with what he's up to right now.

As we grow older, most of us tend to reminisce about our childhoods, including our favourite toys from those formulative years. While kids today have a lot of options at their fingertips (provided that their parents are willing to spend the required dough), children from previous generations grew up with much simpler inventions, like toy cars and little green army men. It’s the latter we’ll focus on here, because the iconic plastic soldiers are back in digital action, thanks to Signal Studios’ Toy Soldiers: War Chest.
The third game in the popular and critically acclaimed series, War Chest is the first in its lineage to be multiplatform. While its peers were only available on the Xbox 360, through Xbox Live Arcade, this scatterbrained follow-up is available digitally and at retail, for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.

The newest installment of the popular Toy Soldiers franchise is coming to the current-gen platforms, and now Ubisoft has given us an official release date (and it's soon!). Come inside to learn more and watch a new trailer.
Yes gamers Toy Soldiers: War Chest is coming to your Xbox, PS4 and PC’s on August 11, 2015. This has been a very successful action/strategy series using a very god mix of the two and honestly is just a lot of fun to play. Admittedly I got this one on a chance a while ago and was hooked instantly. Signal Studios did a very good job with this one and honestly it’s worth checking out.
But on to the new game Toy Soldiers: War Chest Hall of Fame Edition will have four new licensed armies to add to it.

Prepare for an overload of 80s nostalgia, as Ubisoft has officially revealed an August 11th release date for Toy Soldiers: War Chest. The latest from Signal Studios, it promises to expand upon the popular series in many unexpected but seemingly brilliant ways, while also allowing adult gamers to revisit their childhoods.
Ubisoft promises that Toy Soldiers: War Chest will take things to the next level by offering new takes on its predecessors’ mix of action and tower defence gameplay. In fact, those who purchase the game’s special Hall of Fame Edition will be gifted with four legendary armies, who will undoubtedly shake things up.
They include:
G.I. Joe
Marching into the toy box is a highly trained special mission force, codename: G.I. Joe. Led by brave field commander Duke and armed with an arsenal of weapons, this team works together on the front lines to stop evil in its tracks.

The biggest hardware announcement of Microsoft's presentation at E3 this year was backwards compatibility for Xbox 360 titles on the Xbox One.
What's the catch? Well it doesn't launch in full until this Fall and for the moment only a small handful of titles are playable until then. In fact, the current beta preview includes only one Aaa title - the first "Mass Effect". Microsoft has said that they plan to add more each month, but how many more is unclear at this point.
What is clear is that the current list includes just twenty-one supported games including: A Kingdom of Keflings, A World of Keflings, Alien Hominid, Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, Banjo-Tooie, BattleBlock Theater, Defense Grid: The Awakening, Geometry Wars: Evolved, Hexic HD, Jetpac Refuelled, Kameo, Mass Effect, Perfect Dark, Perfect Dark Zero, Small Arms, Super Meat Boy, Toy Soldiers, Toy Soldiers Cold War, Viva Piñata, Viva Piñata Trouble in Paradise,...

Microsoft has announced that Xbox 360 games, both digital and physical, will be playable on Xbox One. Coming initially to Preview Program members and later this year to the masses, the update will allow for the backwards compatibility of 100 games by holiday 2015. However, the initial list of Xbox 360 games that will be playable on Xbox One is somewhat sparse. Some of the highlights include:
Mass Effect Perfect Dark Zero Super Meat Boy Toy Soldiers Viva Piñata
Some anticipated titles include Red Dead Redemption and Grand Theft Auto IV, but we’ll have to wait a little while for those to make the jump to the new platform. The full list can be found here.

Since the debut announcement of Toy Soldiers: War Chest back in August 2014, Ubisoft and Signal Studios have remained mum on the next entry in the cult-hit franchise. However, with E3 right around the corner, the publisher has debuted a new trailer for the strategy simulator that is sure to please any child of the 1980’s.
Like previous entries in the series, War Chest has players taking command of one of a handful of different small-scale armies. The previously unveiled World War I-based Wilhelm and colorful Starbright brigades dominate the early part of the trailer. The two are eventually joined by the futuristic Phantom group, and the medieval-based Dark Lord, which rounds out the core group of toys.
The big hook for the sequel, though, is the inclusion of licensed toy lines for the first time in franchise history. Calling upon two of the biggest toy lines of the past 50 years,...

And while we’re at it, why not another example of Steven Moffat’s recycling his own ideas — whatever you do, don’t look; the monster in the shadows; the impossible astronaut — and other Doctor Who-ish things: the knocking from outside in a place where nothing’s supposed to be alive; the stranded time-traveler who’s related to someone else in the episode. Ubisoft has announced a new entry in the much beloved Toy Soldiers franchise coming to the PS4 and Xbox One platforms, with War Chest. Come inside to learn more about the return of this series and check out the game's first official trailer!
I'm not entirely familar with the franchise, but it is not to be confused with 3Do's Army Men series. Instead the series plays out with a bigger group of toys, beyond Army Men, and this time includes a Barbie doll like army! The game is very similar to a tower defense title. Today, Ubisoft and Signal Studios took full advantage of the pre-gamescom buzz, by revealing Toy Soldiers: War Chest, a sequel that is noticeably more upbeat than those that came before it. Then again, I can’t remember seeing rainbows, unicorns and childhood toys in any sort of war-themed video game before.
Coming to Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Windows PC in “Early 2015,” War Chest pits four armies against each other in confined, diorama-based warfare. The kicker is that this isn’t a traditional, man-versus-man conflict, but one that involves colourful toys and bubbles instead. That’s just one of the title’s four armies, though, and only two have been revealed so far. The remaining couple will not be detailed until closer to launch.
The game’s debut trailer is certainly an interesting one, which brings back memories of the previous Toy Soldiers games, before ditching tradition for hot pink and happy dances.
