This year, the Oscar season prayer has a name, and it is “Sinners.”
With “Sinners,” writer-director Ryan Coogler, one of Hollywood’s most quietly seismic forces, steps into a genre long neglected by the Academy, and once again, reshapes the game. A slow-burn psychological horror film, “Sinners” is not just a pivot for Coogler — rather, it’s a proclamation.
For more than a decade, Coogler has been Hollywood’s quiet revolutionary — symbolizing, for the Black community, a figure akin to our very own Christopher Nolan. From chronicling the final hours of Oscar Grant’s life in “Fruitvale Station,” to reviving the “Rocky” franchise with “Creed,” to breaking barriers with the cultural juggernaut “Black Panther,” Coogler fuses personal and political storytelling with mass appeal like few others.
Now comes “Sinners,” a certified box-office hit and critical darling that stands to redefine both Coogler’s career and the Academy’s stale boundaries around horror.

Jessica Mei Li is wreaking Havoc — literally. Whew. And that was violent, huh? If you’re here, I’m gonna go ahead and assume you’ve already watched Netflix’s latest gut-punch action flick, Havoc, where Jessica Mei Li and Tom Hardy tear up the screen like it’s nobody’s business.
Now, you’re probably wondering: why am I writing about Jessie Mei Li? What went down behind the scenes? And most importantly, who really deserves the credit for her absolute takeover?
Quick rundown: She first made waves leading Netflix’s fantasy hit Shadow and Bone — but Havoc? This was her first real foray into blockbuster chaos. And she crushed it. The thing is, Jessie’s kind of shy by nature. When Shadow and Bone dropped and catapulted her into the spotlight, she was admittedly overwhelmed. But fast forward to today, and it’s pure ‘Veni, Vidi, Vici’ energy.

Nothing is more terrifying than the dingy basement of a big, old house. Think about films like The Conjuring, The Silence Of The Lambs, Barbarian, the list goes on. In her new film, Fréwaka, writer and director Aislinn Clarke adds to that expanding canon with a heart-wrenching folk horror nightmare told almost entirely in the Irish language.
In our exclusive clip from the film, we have a tease at what lurks in this particularly nasty basement…
But first, read the film’s full synopsis:
Irish folkloric terror awaits in this remarkably atmospheric bone-chiller about a care worker who, after suffering a personal tragedy, leaves her Dublin home for a remote assignment in the north country to look after an elderly shut-in… Deep inside her new abode, she finds a portal to something far more sinister.

Movie trilogies hold a special place in cinematic history, don’t they? There’s something magical about a story told perfectly across three films. When filmmakers nail this delicate balance, they create something truly special that resonates with audiences for generations.

It’s like the Goldilocks of film franchises – not too short, not too long, but just right. Let there be no doubt: Ryan Coogler's "Sinners" is a critical and commercial smash. The wildly inventive horror film currently holds a 98% Fresh rating at review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, and grossed an impressive $45.6 million at the domestic box office during its first weekend of release — that's the biggest opening for an original movie since Jordan Peele's "Us" took in $71 million in the pre-pandemic year of 2019.
And yet "Sinners" most remarkable achievement thus far might be the A grade it received from moviegoers polled by CinemaScore. This is a terrific rating for any movie, one that augurs well for its box office performance going forward. But it's especially notable because no horror film in the 46-year history of the market research company has ever scored higher than an A-. In other words, as far as 2025 moviegoers are concerned, "Sinners" is the best horror movie of just about the last half-century.

With a $48 million domestic opening weekend, Warner Bros.’ “Sinners” has set a new mark for the best box office launch for an original film since the pandemic. But that figure only scratches the surface of how historic the critical and audience acclaim has been for Ryan Coogler’s genre-blending horror tale, and why the R-rated film’s theatrical outlook is looking so bright.
On Rotten Tomatoes, “Sinners” — which takes place in 1930s Mississippi and follows a pair of gangster twins (Michael B. Jordan) who open a juke joint, only to have its grand opening crashed by vampires — has earned a fantastic 98% critics and 97% audience score, the highest Rt scores for a studio wide release since Universal/DreamWorks’ “The Wild Robot” last September. “Sinners” also earned an A on CinemaScore, marking the first time in 39 years that a horror film has earned a grade that high from the audience poll that...

Easter weekend is a triumphant one for Warner Bros., as “A Minecraft Movie” continues its torrid pace with a third No. 1 at the box office while Ryan Coogler’s original horror film “Sinners” is off to a promising start with historic levels of critical and audience acclaim on its side.
Saturday industry estimates have “Minecraft” earning $45 million in its third weekend, dropping just 43% as its domestic total reaches a remarkable $348 million. Taking advantage of school spring breaks, the Legendary co-production has kept kids coming out to scream “chicken jockey” at the screen and is estimated to have a domestic total of $348 million by Sunday with a $1 billion global total guaranteed.
“Sinners,” meanwhile, has earned $19 million from 3,308 locations on Friday and is currently projected for a $41 million opening. That’s a solid start for the reported $90 million net budget production, though it will need to leg out considerably to turn a theatrical profit for Warner Bros.

Back when flip phones ruled and crime shows were everywhere, Monk stood out like a sore thumb, one that had to be washed 27 times. Adrian Monk wasn’t your typical detective. He was a genius with germ issues, a human magnifying glass with 312 phobias, and the reason millions of us developed an odd respect for hand wipes. Tony Shalhoub made Monk iconic, but the rest of the gang, Natalie, Stottlemeyer, Randy, and even Sharona, brought their own brand of chaos, charm, and comedy.
For eight glorious seasons, they solved murders, wrestled personal baggage, and somehow made Ocd oddly heartwarming. After the show wrapped in 2009, fans waited years for a comeback. Then boom, 2023’s Mr. Monk’s Last Case dropped like a nostalgic mic, reuniting the core crew. It reminded us just how much we missed this quirky crime-solving family. ABC's The Rookie just delivered one of the most shocking episodes of Season 7 thus far, complete with a major death that brings an ongoing storyline to a close and an emotional case for Celina (Lisseth Chavez) revolving around her dead sister. In the middle of it all, however, was a sequence inspired heavily by a classic thriller, the latest in the show's trend of paying homage to beloved films. During a larger discussion with Collider'sTherese Lacson about Episode 14, titled "Mad About Murder," showrunner Alexi Hawley broke down how the series honored 1991's The Silence of the Lambs with Celina's search for a missing pregnant woman named Aria (Julia Rose). He also discussed his mindset behind organically weaving references to movies into the world of John Nolan (Nathan Fillion) and his team.
Season 7, Episode 14 sees Celina racing to stop a true-crime podcaster who is covering the abduction and murder of her sister as her latest case.

There’s something about Edward Norton that sets him apart. He doesn’t just play a character—he disappears into it. Every performance feels raw, lived-in, and totally believable, like he’s not acting at all. Whether he’s a troubled narrator, a reformed neo-Nazi, or a genius with a secret, Norton brings layers and intensity that few actors can match. He’s built a career on complexity, always choosing roles that leave a mark. Honestly, he’s not just part of modern cinema—he’s helped shape it.
Blowing up in the late 90s with a string of Oscar-worthy performances, Norton quickly became the guy directors had to work with. He’s teamed up with visionaries like David Fincher, Tony Kaye, and Wes Anderson, shared the screen with legends like Brad Pitt and Anthony Hopkins, and delivered some of the most iconic performances that created a shift in the world of filmmaking.

One of the hardest aspects for any talent turning down a project is watching it flourish beyond their wildest expectations without them. Michelle Pfeiffer turned down the role of Clarice Starling in "The Silence of the Lambs," and the film went on to win five Academy Awards, with one of those going to lead actress Jodie Foster. There are also nuclear-level missed opportunities like Matt Damon and James Cameron's "Avatar," where he not only turned down the role that Sam Worthington eventually played, but a 10 percent margin of the profits. But then you have cases like "The Matrix," where all of the possible casting outcomes open up a multiversal rift where the film takes on a completely different stature in each of them.
Lana and Lily Wachowski's 1999 sci-fi mind-bender was not only a critical and box office sensation, but ultimately went on to become one of the most influential films ever made.

Nicolas Cage has described his Bad Lieutenant co-star Val Kilmer as a “genius actor” in a written tribute following news of his death at age 65.
“I always liked Val and am sad to hear of his passing,” Cage said in a statement sent to Deadline. “I thought he was a genius actor. I enjoyed working with him on Bad Lieutenant, and I admired his commitment and sense of humor. He should have won the Oscar for The Doors.”
The Doors — Oliver Stone’s biopic of 60s rocker Jim Morrison — was one of Kilmer’s defining roles. The film has gone on to become a cult classic, but in 1991, the year of its release, it didn’t land a single Oscar nom. That year, the Best Actor Oscar was won by Anthony Hopkins for Jonathan Demme’s classic horror The Silence of the Lambs.

It's not uncommon for aspiring actors to start young, but there wasn't any time wasted when it came to queer icon Jodie Foster. She started in commercials as young as three and made her television debut as early as six in an episode of "Mayberry R.F.D." Long before she played the vulnerable defendant in "The Accused" or faced off against Hannibal Lecter in "The Silence of the Lambs," the child prodigy slowly made her way into film with roles in "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore" and "Freaky Friday." By the time she was 12, Foster was not only working on her second Martin Scorsese picture with "Taxi Driver," but it was also the role that led her first of five Oscar nominations — and two wins.
In the interim before her big breaks, however, Foster was kept super busy when it came to guest appearances on a plethora of television shows. She...

Cannibalism is one of the most taboo plot devices that a movie (or any work of fiction) can possibly feature. It's no surprise, then, that many films which feature cannibalism in some capacity fall into the horror genre, such as The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), Cannibal Holocaust (1980), and The Silence of the Lambs (1991). Nevertheless, many filmmakers have used cannibalism for more than just shock value, with recent films like Raw (2016), Bones and All (2022), and Society of the Snow (2023) even humanizing people who engage in cannibalism.
And then there's Peter Greenaway'sThe Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989). While the film doesn't feature any cannibalism until its disturbing ending, it is unique in that it features cannibalism in a rather heroic manner. This ending, combined with the film's expressionistic visual style and gruesome violence, has led to a multitude of interpretations regarding the film's themes, including as a political allegory and as a coming-of-age story.

This ending, combined with the film's expressionistic visual style and gruesome violence, has led to a multitude of interpretations regarding the film's themes, including as a political allegory and as a coming-of-age story.

The Critic only aired for two seasons in the 1990s, but three decades later, many fans still remember the series fondly. If there are enough of them interested, they could soon be getting good news with one of the creators of the show teasing a revival.
An animated sitcom, The Critic was created by Simpsons vets Al Jean and Mike Reiss. In a recent post on X, Jean shared an image of The Critic along with a message stating, "Just curious ... how many would like to see [The Critic], with [Jon Lovitz] return[?]" This is certainly not an official announcement that a revival is happening, but Jean seems to be hinting that it could be in the works. Perhaps Jean is testing the fan reactions to see how much interest there would be in a revival before fully committing to the idea. In two days' time, the post has garnered 15.2K likes.

Though The Silence of the Lambs is a landmark film — the first horror film to win a Best Picture Oscar — the film also represents a seismic shift in policing, realistically depicting modern FBI investigatory methods. This movie was only possible due to the work of a pioneering FBI agent named John Douglas, who struggled to sort and classify the patterns and tendencies of convicted killers. The FBI team he joined, which became known as "profilers," ambitiously sought to predict which personalities were the most likely to commit heinous acts of violence. Culminating in what is possibly the creepiest road trip in history, Douglas picked the brain of every scumbag in prison, helping shape such fictional sociopaths as Hannibal Lecter and Buffalo Bill.
Agent Douglas devised the system alongside fellow Behavioral Science Unit agent Robert Ressler in the mid-'70s at FBI HQ in Quantico, Virginia. Their research would build a...

Sir Anthony Hopkins is a prolific actor and has proven his mettle as a performer with his various stage and screen endeavors. His most iconic role remains the cannibalistic psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal Lecter in the Best Picture-winning horror film The Silence of the Lambs. Hopkins won his first Oscar for the film, despite limited screen time.
Hopkins’ performance was nothing short of legendary and he is often synonymous with Dr. Hannibal Lecter. Years later, Mads Mikkelsen took on the role in the NBC procedural TV series Hannibal. Mikkelsen mentioned that it was impossible to do what Hopkins did in the films, and he had to find a new way to portray the character.

Better Call Saul and The Mandalorian star Giancarlo Esposito is known for playing villainous roles to perfection, but he still has yet to reach the "deepest, darkest" part of himself to play a character. One role that would allow him to go to that level is Hannibal Lecter, the fictional cannibal portrayed by Anthony Hopkins in The Silence of the Lambs.
In a new interview with Empire, Esposito was asked about previous comments he'd made in 2019 about how he'd "fight to the death to play Hannibal Lecter." It's a feeling that still holds true for Esposito, who has since gotten to meet Hopkins personally. While the two didn't speak about the Hannibal character, Esposito feels that Hopkins would approve of him taking on that role. It may not be a project that's actually in the works, though Esposito clarified he's up for it it he were to get the opportunity.

Bill Skarsgård’s new film debuted in theaters this weekend to underwhelming box office returns. Skarsgård features opposite Anthony Hopkins in Locked, the psychological thriller following a thief who breaks into a luxury SUV only to realize he’s now become a pawn in a sophisticated game. Locked debuted in roughly 971 theaters across the country this weekend and earned $924,000 at the global box office, giving it a per-theater total of under $1,000. The film failed to crack the top 10 during its first weekend in theaters, finishing at #12 behind Dog Man and Paddington in Peru but ahead of Last Breathand Mufasa: The Lion King. Locked is based on the film 4 x 4 by Mariano Cohn and Gastón Duprat, with Michael Arlen Ross writing the script and David Yarovesky directing.

If you ever need proof that the Academy Awards operate in a strange alternate reality, look no further than the 2019 Oscar nominations. That was the year when Toni Collette delivered what can only be described as an acting masterclass in Hereditary and the Academy responded by giving her performance the same level of recognition they’d give a haunted lampshade. None.

But why? What did Toni Collette ever do to deserve such neglect? Well, besides giving the most unhinged, bone-chilling, emotionally raw performance of the decade, apparently nothing. That’s exactly the problem, the Oscars have always treated horror movies like the weird cousins they only talk to when absolutely necessary.

This post contains spoilers for "The White Lotus" season 3.
Can somebody please give Walton Goggin an award for acting almost entirely with his eyes? He did it on last week's episode of "The White Lotus," when his depressed maybe-hitman Rick sat through a stunningly unexpected monologue from an old buddy played by Sam Rockwell. This week, he's back at it again as the season enters its endgame -- which no doubt will have something to do with the man known as Jim Hollinger. Hollinger makes his entrance in an out-of-focus shot at the end of episode 5, and the hour ends with Goggins' almost imperceptibly shaken look.
The big twist here can be readily inferred, though we'll have to wait until next week for the show to confirm or deny it. Rick previously said that he knew hotel owner Sritala's (Patravadi Mejudhon) husband killed his dad when he was on what...

In the years since Bong Joon Ho made Oscar history with “Parasite”s best picture victory in 2020, the Korean director’s fanbase continued to grow and evolve around the world. And with the recent release of his capitalistic satire “Mickey 17” starring Robert Pattinson, the time feels right to celebrate his genre-defying work over the years.
Opening this Sunday in Los Angeles, the Academy Museum’s “Director’s Inspiration: Bong Joon Ho Exhibit” marks the first exhibit fully dedicated to the beloved director’s filmography. The collection features over 100 original objects from Bong, including the suseok rock from “Parasite,” the original slate used during filming “The Host” and an advertisement for the film club Bong formed while enrolled at Yonsei University, where he screened classics like “Paris, Texas,” “Tokyo Story” and “Raging Bull.”

No one is going to sell you on the overall merits of the 1992 dystopian sci-fi film Freejack, starring the most unlikely trio of Emilio Estevez, Anthony Hopkins, and Mick Jagger. If they try, then they are selling you a bill of goods. But we can sell you on how this movie is one of the most bizarre confluences of three performers ever assembled. Estevez's trajectory was fluctuating after a decade-long run as a celebrated Brat Packer. He was trying to establish dramatic bona fides, only to find more success in the light-hearted The Mighty Ducks franchise. Anthony Hopkins was in a serious slump. He had already agreed to do Freejackbefore he, or any of us, knew how monumental Hannibal Lecter would become in The Silence of the Lambs. He had made a series of pretty bad pictures after The Elephant Man, and Freejack debuted almost a year to the day...

The following contains spoilers for Opus, now playing in theaters. It also contains a mention of suicide.
When it comes to artistic horror, A24 keeps cranking out gems. The studio is known for romance and indie films, as well as action movies like Alex Garland's Civil War and Warfare. But it has created horrors such as Hereditary and Talk to Me.
Not all horror movies involve demons, however. Some are cerebral, grounded stories filled with tension and suspense. Opus is one prime example. It focuses on a musical cult called the Levelists in America that invites a group of people to see how they behave. It quickly turns into a sinister trip that makes a statement about fragile egos, and how journalism can be misused.

Audiences around the world are familiar with the brilliance of Anthony Hopkins, the actor who immortalized the character of Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs. Reshaping what it means to be a cinematic villain, Hopkins delivered a career-defining performance, eventually winning his first Oscar for Best Actor in 1992. However, in 1993, just two years after playing the iconic villain, Hopkins gave an even better performance in James Ivory's The Remains of the Day. As Mr. Stevens, Hopkins tells a beautiful story of a butler whose life has been defined by a misplaced sense of duty. While Lecter was all about being cunning and charismatic, Stevens was a man trapped in the rigid structure of his own convictions.
Set in 1930s England, when the world was heading for a Second World War, Remains of the Day is a screen adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro's literary masterpiece. It's a poignant...

The year 2024 was a significant one for horror movies, highlighted by a successful awards season and dominance by the genre at the box office. Notably, the Oscars recognized four films within the genre, signaling a growing appreciation for horror’s artistic merit.
The Academy Awards have historically marginalized horror films, with The Silence of the Lambs in 1991 a notable exception. Its “Big Five” sweep — Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, and Adapted Screenplay — remains a unique achievement. However, the recent nominations of films like The Substance and Nosferatu indicate a growing willingness to acknowledge the genre, signaling a potential change in the awards landscape.
The ‘Silence of the Lambs’ cast and production winners hold their Oscars at the 64th Academy Awards in 1992. The film won five Oscars.

A great villain can make or break a film and they have been a staple of storytelling since the dawn of cinema. There have been hundreds of incredible, iconic villains audiences have loved to hate. Some movies are even so rich as to have more than one of these incredible foes.

The 1990s transformed the movie industry. It was the decade in which filmmakers began to push further beyond traditional filmmaking with the help of new technologies, new ways of storytelling, and themes that challenged commonly accepted societal norms.
Independent cinema grew in numbers, special effects became ever so popular, and complex, often controversial subject matter made its mark. The growth of the overall film industry can also be attributed to the new expectations from moviegoers.

Best Actor Oscar Winners List (Photo Credit – Instagram/Wikipedia)
The Academy Awards have long vaunted acting titans, and a rare few male actors have commandeered the Best Actor statuette more than once, with Daniel Day-Lewis scaling the peak thrice. From living legends like Tom Hanks to recent winners such as Adrien Brody, 10 men are trailing Day-Lewis’ record. Here is every name with two or more wins in this hallowed category.
1. Daniel Day-Lewis
Sir Daniel Day-Lewis stands alone with three Best Actor Oscars, a feat no other man has matched. His wins were facilitated thanks to dramatic transformations for My Left Foot, There Will Be Blood, and Lincoln—roles that exhibit him as an unforgettable chameleon. The Irish actor has retired since 2017’s Phantom Thread, but his five nominations out of fewer than a couple dozen movies certainly make us wonder whether Day-Lewis could come back for that gold once again...

In this regard, March 2025 is no exception, albeit this time, we have a few more original films that are certain to entertain viewers. There's the highly anticipated mystery drama directed by Tyler Perry, a heartwarming rom-com about life and work, and, lastly, fans will be able to see Nicole Kidman in another odd role centered on an unconventional thriller.

The cast of "Star Trek: The Original Series" had an endearing ability to laugh at themselves. It wasn't just about the sense of levity that often existed on the bridge of the Starship Enterprise; it was the actors' willingness to be goofy and play broadly for laughs. Even a performer as seemingly stiff as William Shatner could loosen up and act the fool when a scene called for it. This capacity to clown was on full display when the crew traveled back in time to 1986 San Francisco to kidnap a couple of humpback whales in "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home"; watching Spock learn to curse, Bones react in horror to the state of 20th century medicine, and Kirk put the moves on Catherine Hicks' cetologist made us howl because it was so clear the cast was having a wonderful time.

Anora scored five Oscars on Sunday, but one of its wins took many, including Jack Antonoff, by surprise. Demi Moore was the odds-on favorite to win Best Actress, but The Substance star fell to Anora star Mikey Madison. But Madison's victory is not very surprising when you get down to it. Here's how she pulled off the win.
1. The stronger movie prevails over narrative
Anora won five Oscars from six nominations, with four wins for Sean Baker: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Film Editing. The Palme d'Or champ was the Oscar frontrunner for most of the season, with just a short blip after its Golden Globe shutout before it claimed the Producers Guild of America and Directors Guild of America Awards to reassert itself. The Substance had five nominations, a great haul for a body-horror film, and won one, Best Makeup and Hairstyling. It...
