Worthwhile jazz concert tape
My review was written in January 1991 after watching the show on Kultur video cassette.
Taped in 1982 in concert at the Smithsonian, this document of the late jazz great Art Blakey is a must for collectors due to its vintage performance by the Marsalis brothers.
Wynton, since lionized as a leader in jazz in his own right, is in particularly fine form here, displaying uncharacteristically fiery chops that recall the young Freddie Hubbard in Blakey's '60s band. He also excels in a lengthy solo on Kurt Weill's "My Ship" though his a capella coda to this song strays from jazz to mere technical pyrotechnics.
Blakey is relatively subdued here, letting his young sidemen shine. An interesting brief interview with Blakey recalls his early career.
Tape is notable for varied camerawork and presenting the four extended performances without interruption. End credits curiously misidentify the axes wielded by the saxophone players.
