It’s considered one of the most paused moments in movie history, the scene in Basic Instinct where Sharon Stone – as Catherine Tramell, a revamp on the femme fatale – uncrosses her legs during an interrogation, revealing she has nothing on underneath. It made Sharon Stone and pushed boundaries on what could be shown in mainstream cinema. But today? That moment in the 1992 icy-cold thriller may not even register as risque to many.
Appearing on Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace, Sharon Stone said that Basic Instinct scene pales in comparison to what can be found while flipping through the channels. “You see so little of anything in this film, actually. And now we see men with full frontal nudity on television. But still we look at that film as such a scandalous, controversial moment in filmmaking. And really, it’s quite benign by comparison to almost anything you see now.

After playing exclusively in theaters for a week, specifically attached to prints for Wes Anderson’s “Asteroid City,” the first trailer for “Drive-Away Dolls” has been offered up for online consumption. Anyone checking out Focus Features’ 1950s-set sci-fi comedy in multiplexes this weekend will likely get a theatrical helping of this one too, but you can watch it above instead.
Directed by Ethan Coen, but not alongside Joel Coen, the road-trip crime romp was written by Coen and Tricia Cooke. It stars Margaret Qualley, Geraldine Viswanathan, Beanie Feldstein, Pedro Pascal, Colman Domingo, Bill Camp and (in what seems to be another in a long line of just-for-fun cameos) Matt Damon.
This comedy caper follows Jamie (Qualley), an uninhibited free spirit bemoaning yet another breakup with a girlfriend, and her demure friend Marian (Viswanathan) who desperately needs to loosen up. In search of a fresh start, the two embark on an impromptu road trip to Tallahassee,...

We’ve lost another Hollywood legend. The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that cinematographer Bill Butler, best known for his work on the 1975 Steven Spielberg classic Jaws, has passed away at the age of 101. Butler died on Wednesday evening, according to the American Society of Cinematographers. He would have turned 102 on Friday – today.
Born on April 7, 1921 in Cripple Creek, Colorado, Butler earned his first entertainment industry credit by working as a camera operator on the 1959 film 1001 Arabian Nights. His first cinematographer credit came when his friend, director William Friedkin, hired him to shoot the 1962 TV movie The People vs. Paul Crump. He never attended film school, he just taught himself cinematography by watching movies and referring to the ASC manual. That approach definitely worked out for him. Over the next fifty-four years, he served as the cinematographer on eighty-four more projects, including Jack Nicholson’s Drive, He Said; The Bold Men,...

The legendary, Oscar-nominated cinematographer of Steven Spielberg’s horror classic Jaws, Bill Butler passed away Wednesday at the age of 101 years old, THR reports this morning.
The site notes, “He would have turned 102 on Friday.”
It was back in 1976 that Bill Butler was co-nominated for a “Best Cinematography” statue at that year’s Academy Awards for his work on One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, a film released just one year after Butler served as Cinematographer on the horror classic Jaws.
“His iconic shots included the early dawn attack of the first victim that opens the film, the Vertigo-inspired dolly zoom that accompanies Chief Brody’s shock at witnessing a shark attack from the beach and the extreme close-ups of panicking swimmers,” THR explains, detailing Bill Butler’s integral role in the making of the game-changing summer blockbuster.

Christopher Nolan's 2014 science fiction film "Interstellar" is something of a mixed bag. Set in the near future, when the planet Earth is on the brink of extinction, a group of astronauts pilot a shuttle through a wormhole seeking a viable planet on which to perpetuate the human species. Nolan's vision of the cosmos was striking enough to influence many spacebound dramas thereafter, and black holes have looked different in movies ever since the film's release. Additionally, the technology, the spacesuits, and the spacecraft all look appropriately utilitarian. The tech looks appropriately useable in "Interstellar."
There is, however, a lot of highfalutin talk about the human need to remain connected to a larger, cosmic force, with one astronaut positing that love itself may be the God-like energy that scientifically binds everything together. Nolan -- more often concerned with elaborate sci-fi screenwriting architecture than humanity -- is the wrong kind...

The tagline on the poster for Mel Brooks' celebrated 1974 comedy film "Blazing Saddles" was, "Never give a saga an even break." Not only is that a clever pun, but it reveals the central philosophy of modern pop satire. Anything that takes itself seriously enough the deem itself a "saga" is most assuredly ripe for ribald parody. Brooks would continue to deny even breaks to Alfred Hitchcock ("High Anxiety"), historical epics ("History of the World Part I"), and "Star Wars" ("Spaceballs"). In 1993, Brooks -- reacting to the massive, massive popularity of Kevin Reynolds' 1991 actioner "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" -- elected to make "Robin Hood: Men in Tights," a raunchy, slapstick farce that skewered all things Sherwood.
Many of Brooks' gags in "Men in Tights" were shamelessly recycled from his unsuccessful 1975 sitcom "When Things Were Rotten," starring Dick Gautier as Robin Hood, but he at least did have the good sense to very occasionally skew modern.

As soccer great Pelé’s condition has deteriorated, his daughter Kely Nascimento has been sharing the journey with fans via social media.
On Friday, Nascimento posted a photo of herself hugging her 82-year-old father in his hospital bed.
The caption, written in Portuguese, reads: “We continue to be here, in the fight and in faith. One more night together.”
Pelé (real name Edson Arantes do Nascimento) has entered a palliative care unit at a Brazilian hospital, according to reports. He is being treated for colon cancer and a respiratory infection. According to AP this week, his cancer has advanced and he is currently receiving “elevated care” for kidney and heart issues,

The 1982 TV series "Police Squad!," created by the famed Zucker/Abrahams/Zucker (Zaz) comedy team, only lasted six episodes, but it remains one of the best TV shows of all time. In a strange way, its early cancelation was artistically fortuitous. Its small volume allows the show's many fans to savor what was provided. Additionally, the showrunners, fond of repeated jokes and running gags, never had a chance to run their humor into the ground. There's not a lot of "Police Squad!" in terms of raw numbers, but in terms of comedy, it was a feast.
Six years later, Paramount allowed the Zaz team to resurrect their creation on the big screen as a means of introducing the tiny cult series to a larger audiences. David Zucker's "The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!" repeated a lot of the jokes from the series, and brought back star...

Italian actor and director Valeria Golino has been set as jury president for the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival this year.
Golino is known for her work in English-language titles such as Rain Man and Hot Shots! and also directed 2018 Un Certain Regard selection Euphoria. She’ll be joined by U.S. filmmaker Debra Granik, Venezuelan actor Édgar Ramirez, Polish actress Joanna Kulig and French singer-songwriter and actor Benjamin Biolay.
This year’s Un Certain Regard features 20 films, including eight first films and nine from female directors.

On the first of April, /Film reported that the 1991 Jim Abrahams spoof comedy "Hot Shots!" — a parody of "Top Gun" — and its 1993 sequel "Hot Shots! Part Deux" — a parody of "Rambo: First Blood Part II," and many others — would be made available on Disney+. "Hot Shots!" was one of the many films Disney acquired in their 2019 buyout of the 20th Century Fox library, and few films could have been more out-of-sync with Disney's careful managing of their own image. Disney was slick, clean, family-friendly, and earnest. "Hot Shots!" featured a scene wherein Valeria Golino cooks an egg, two...

When Disney bought out Fox for 71.3 billion back in March of 2019, it caused, in addition to a renewed conversation as to the effectiveness of antitrust laws, a spate of cognitive dissonance among film fans. Disney has always been careful of its own branding, often gearing its massive entertainment factory toward the production of colorful, slick, family-friendly entertainments. With the acquisition of Fox, Disney would now own the likes of "Alien," "Die Hard," and "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," films not well-designed for theme park attractions. This author likes to think that Dr. Frank-n-Furter is now part of...

The “Airplane!” school of chock-full-of-jokes conceptual parody, with its fourth-wall-smashing stupido-smart goofiness, had a pretty impressive run. It ruled for several decades, spawning everything from the “Airplane!” creators’ own “Naked Gun” franchise — to me, the media-age Marx Brothers-worthy masterpiece of the form — to the Wayans brothers’ “Scary Movie” franchise to several dozen comedies, from “Hot Shots!” to “National Lampoon’s Loaded Weapon 1” to “Not Another Teen Movie,” that skewered genre after genre after genre with the puckish satiric glee that most of them deserved. But the “Airplane!” school didn’t stick around long enough to mount a full-scale comic attack on the superhero movie. Which is too bad, since it could have been stupendous. What comic-book films, with their authoritarian heroism and CGI bombast, just about cry out for is a parody that’s massively scaled in its high-flying mockery.

A new year means a new start. But in its list of new year releases for January 2021, Hulu is sending a message of…eh, we’ll get the year started in February. Not to be overly rude to the usually sturdy streaming service, but there’s not much going on for Hulu in 2021’s first month.

Hulu is kicking off the new year in style next month, with January set to deliver a ton of fresh titles to the Disney-owned streaming service. There’s a bunch of original content landing throughout the first few weeks of 2021, but probably the highlight is the incredible number of classic movies that are going up on the site on New Year’s Day. Whether you’re in the mood for iconic comedies, dramas, animated efforts or sci-fi flicks, there’s something for you on the way.
There are well over 100 films being added to Hulu’s library on January 1st, so let’s just pick out a few notable titles. The full Austin Powers trilogy is among them, and if you can’t get enough of Mike Myers, the first Shrek likewise becomes available. For dramas, there’s Robert Downey Jr. biopic Chaplin, Johnny Depp vehicle Donnie Brasco and Jim Carrey’s The Truman Show.

In the 1980s, Italian multi-hyphenate Valeria Golino starred in Hollywood films such as “Rain Man,” ”Big Top Pee-wee,” and “Hot Shots!,” before returning to Italy. She’s now at Cannes in Un Certain Regard as a director for the second time with “Euphoria,” about two brothers with opposite characters unexpectedly brought together after their paths had long split.
“Euphoria” revolves around a charismatic gay man. What inspired you?
A dear friend of mine went through a tough time with his brother who was very sick. A story he told me was the seed for the film.
How would you describe the protagonist?
The hero of the movie is a young man who is very shrewd, promiscuous, a coke-head, a liar, and totally amoral, though I never judge him. It’s not a morality tale.
Unlike your previous film, “Miele,” you explore a male universe this time. Was it harder?
No.

Being arrested was the best thing that could have happened to Charlie Sheen - and he's determined to keep on the straight and narrow from now on. The Hot Shots! (1991) star was in court this week and released from probation 71 days early for good behaviour. The judge also wiped out a misdemeanour battery conviction from his record, stemming from an attack on his girlfriend in 1996. And now, speaking for the first time about the incident, Sheen admitted being handed over to the police by his father Martin Sheen was the best thing that could have happened to him. He says, "They say that the longest journey begins with the first step and this first step was taken in a court room almost two years ago. Since that day my life has improved drastically. My career has improved, my relationships and most importantly my health, my family, my friends."...
