Thandie Newton Was Once Terrified That Tom Cruise Got Too Into Their ‘Mission Impossible’ Love Scene
Tom Cruise brought on board actor Thandie Newton for his iconic Mission Impossible franchise. Although a huge role for Newton, there were a few moments on set that left the actor either upset or confused. One of those moments involved a love scene that Newton was concerned Cruise was too excited about.

Newton once confided that Cruise’s ex-wife Kidman played a significant part in Newton’s Mission Impossible 2 role. Newton previously worked with Kidman in the 1991 feature Flirting, and seemed to develop a bit of a bond with Kidman afterwards. Because of that bond, Kidman would eventually suggest Newton for a role in Cruise’s action hit franchise.
“I knew Tom Cruise already of course, and Nicole said he should cast me. And I think [director] John Woo’s a genius,” Newton once told Telegraph.

Monday night on “American Song Contest,” Jewel was eliminated after failing to earn enough votes from the viewers and the national jury. The four-time Grammy nominee and recent “The Masked Singer” winner performed her uplifting original song “The Story” last week on NBC’s reality TV show, but it failed to connect with viewers. Heads up: even though she’s saying goodbye for now, Jewel still has a shot of returning to the program as a wildcard. How does it work?
As revealed in earlier weeks, there will be two “redemption” artists invited back to the show during the Semi-Finals round. “Show ’em love by streaming their music,” host Snoop Dogg said last week, implying the two eliminated acts who earn the most downloads will be the ones that return.
Jewel is in good company. One week ago, Macy Gray was eliminated from “American Song Contest” following her performance of her original tune “Every Night.

During Week 3 of “American Song Contest,” the jury of 56 industry professionals ranked the 12 original songs from first to last, with Tenneesee’s Tyler Braden advancing to the semi-finals thanks to his tune “Seventeen.” The most famous singer on the docket was Alaska’s Jewel, a four-time Grammy nominee and recent “The Masked Singer” winner. However, her uplifting song “The Story” (watch above) failed to connect with the jury, coming in ninth place in their rankings. Don’t give up, Jewel fans — she’s not out of the competition just yet.

During the third week of NBC’s “American Song Contest,” the national jury was tasked with ranking 12 original songs (as opposed to 11) from first to last. At the end of the April 4 episode, hosts Kelly Clarkson and Snoop Dogg announced the results: Tennessee country singer Tyler Braden was ranked the highest by the jury of 56 industry professionals, so he moved on to the semi-finals. Tyler’s original song, “Seventeen,” was a soft, reflective melody about a couple looking back on their lives. Watch the performance above.
The fate of the other 11 participants now rests in the hands of You at home. Your voting results will be tabulated alongside the jury rankings — it’s a complicated process — to determine which three acts will join Tyler in the semi-finalists. Here they all are in order of the jury rankings:

Thandie Newton has become an on-screen staple over the years: from her debut in “Flirting” in 1991, a role opposite Tom Cruise in “Mission: Impossible II” in, a part in the Oscar-winning “Crash,” and most recently HBO’s “Westworld.” But Newton is setting the record straight — her name is Thandiwe, not Thandie.
The actress revealed the correct spelling of her name in a recent interview with “British Vogue.” Her parents named her Thandiwe, which means “beloved” in Shona, the language of her mother’s people..
But when Newton got a bit older and attended a Catholic primary school, the W of her name was quickly phased out in an effort to assimilate to the culture of the school. “We may as well have been the first Black people anyone had ever seen,” Newton said. The actress also revealed that it was at this school where she was once excluded from a...

Thandiwe Newton has been credited as Thandie Newton over three decades, but not anymore. As part of her British Vogue cover story, Newton announced she is reclaiming the original spelling of her name, Thandiwe, in Hollywood and will be credited as such in all of her future film and television projects. Thandiwe means “beloved” in Shona. The only reason Thandiwe got switched to Thandie in the first place is because the “W” was “carelessly missed out from her first credit.” Newton said of name reclamation, “That’s my name. It’s always been my name. I’m taking back what’s mine.”
Elsewhere in the British Vogue cover story, Newton reflected on the Australian director John Duigan making her darken her skin while she was auditioning for her debut role in “Flirting” opposite Nicole Kidman. Newton remembered Duigan asking her, “Can you be a bit darker? Be darker by Monday,...

British actor Thandiwe Newton is reverting to the original Shona spelling of her name, after decades of being known and credited as “Thandie Newton.”
The Emmy-winning “Westworld” actor was born Melanie Thandiwe Newton Parker. “That’s my name. It’s always been my name. I’m taking back what’s mine,” the actor said in an interview with British Vogue. The Vogue article also states that “the W was carelessly missed out from her first credit.”
Newton debuted in 1991 with John Duigan’s “Flirting,” where she played a character named Thandiwe Adjewa. All future credits for her will be with the correct spelling.
The actor is of Shona heritage, from Zimbabwe, on her mother’s side. Thandiwe means “beloved.”
The actor is on the cover of the May issue of British Vogue. She discusses her career in depth with writer Diana Evans.

Audiences have known her as Thandie Newton for over 30 years. Now, the Westworld actress has revealed that is not her real name. Her real name is Thandiwe Newton.
Newton’s full name is Melanie Thandiwe Newton. Thandiwe is pronounced “tan-dee-way” and it means “beloved”. In an interview with British Vogue, she revealed that her name was misspelled in the credits of her first film in 1991, Flirting which co-starred Nicole Kidman and Noah Taylor. As a result, Thandie Newton has stuck for over three decades. It’s not known why she waited so long to revert to the real spelling of her name — but it doesn’t matter. What matters is that we refer to her as Thandiwe Newton from here on out.
“The thing I’m most grateful for in our business right now is being in the company of others who truly see me,” said Newton in the interview with British Vogue.

“Westworld” star Thandie Newton revealed several stories about shocking behavior she’s encountered from Hollywood executives and creatives over the course of her career in a provocative interview with Vulture. The actor cited incidents ranging from press coverage of her alleged sexual assault to what she remembers as a racist encounter with former Sony Pictures head Amy Pascal.
The actor detailed the trauma she experienced at age 16, when she was allegedly groomed and sexually abused by director John Duigan while working on the set of the 1991 movie “Flirting,” when he was 39. The press referred to it as an affair, and this, Newton said, left her re-traumatized.
“If someone brought it up — and of course they’re going to bring it up in a f—ing interview, man — if they spoke about it in a way that’s not sympathetic or they called it an affair, it was insult to injury.

Today marks the 35th anniversary of Lifetime. It is being celebrated with a marathon of signature original movies from the past two decades, like Flirting with Forty, Homeless to Harvard, Steel Magnolias and The Gabby Douglas Story.
Besides a tribute to the network’s past, the marathon is a nod to its future. Last summer, under new A+E Networks CEO Paul Buccieri, Lifetime made a change in its programming strategy, putting emphasis back on original movies and using them as backdoor pilots over traditional series development.
The network signaled its renewed push in original movies last August when it announced a 2019 slate of 75 films.
“It’s gotten so much higher than that,” said Lifetime veteran Tanya Lopez, Evp, Movies, Limited Series & Original Movie Acquisitions. “I wouldn’t say that we’re doubling that but we’re definitely increasing them.” (The count includes both originals and acquisitions.)

Happy 50th birthday to Naomi Watts, born on this day in England. Many of us think of her as an Australian actress since that's where she first emerged but she didn't move there until she was 14. The first two movies I personally saw her in were Flirting (1991) and Tank Girl (1995). Flirting really ought to be enshrined and preserved for eternity since it gave us early looks at four enduring careers. Naomi has a small role but the three principal players are Nicole Kidman, Noah Taylor, and Thandie Newton.
Naomi is so young in this clip of the girls "arriving" to a cross-school dance, that she's almost unrecognizable. She's the one in the pink with her hair up. But it's Nicole and Thandie that the cameras follow...

And they're off! Not long after their wedding and honeymoon, Josiah Duggar and his new bride Lauren Swanson are embarking on a new adventure. No, they're not pregnant — or at least they haven't announced anything just yet, though knowing the Duggars that news may be on the way within the next few months. Instead, they're following in their family tradition of taking an Rv trip together. How fun! The couple packed up everything they needed into an Rv trailer hitched to the back of their black truck, and they hit the road over the weekend. "Life should never be too busy to have fun..." the couple wrote on Instagram — though if we had to guess who did the actual posting, our money would be on Lauren. Ever since they decided to share Si's Instagram account, it seems like she's been the one sharing pics and writing captions. "#firstmarriedrvtrip #bespontaneous #marriedtomybestfriend,...

Last year, Nicole Kidman beat her friend and “Big Little Lies” co-star and co-producer Reese Witherspoon for the Emmy. This year, she could defeat a pal again — but not just any ol’ buddy: her best friend Naomi Watts.

Later this week, fans of Greta Gerwig’s wholly charming brand of cinema are in for a very big treat when her solo directorial debut “Lady Bird” arrives in limited release. Already lauded on the festival circuit and considered something of an Oscar contender in a slew of categories, the film draws much of its inspiration from Gerwig’s own coming-of-age in suburban Sacramento. Featuring Saoirse Ronan as the eponymous Lady Bird (sure, her birth certificate says “Christine,” but the whipsmart high school senior doesn’t have much time for such restrictions), the film follows the restless teen as she comes to grips with the push-pull of home, family, friends, and boys, all as she’s about to go enter full-scale adulthood.

Naomi Watts and Nicole Kidman aren't just fellow Aussie actresses; they're also best friends. The ladies have been close since attending high school at the Phillip Street Theatre in Sydney, and their friendship is evident at movie premieres and award shows to this day. In 1991, they starred together in the Australian independent film Flirting. Of her relationship with Naomi, Nicole has said that they are "very, very good friends and have maintained that through so many things," adding, "I think that's really rare, particularly for actresses, and I take a lot of pride in that." Naomi has also revealed that the two share "naughty wicked senses of humor" and that while they "definitely go to glamorous dinner parties" they can also "sit in a room and motormouth each other." In honor of their decades-long friendship, here are Nicole and Naomi's sweetest photos. Related Stories:Nicole Kidman Makes Out With Bff...

Double win marks the first time two films have shared Australia’s top film prize.Scroll down for full list of winners
Russell Crowe’s The Water Diviner and Jennifer Kent thriller The Babadook have both won the Aacta (Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts) Award for best film, marking the first time that two titles have shared the country’s top film prize.
The event in Sydney, hosted this year by actresses Cate Blanchett and Deborah Mailman, is only the 4th annual Aacta Awards but they were the result of an overhaul of the AFI (Australian Film Institute) Awards, which were established in 1969.
The two winning films could not be more different from each other. Kent’s meticulously crafted low-budget claustrophobic thriller, The Babadook, is about a single mother who battles with her son’s fear of a monster lurking in the house.

Glenn here with a bit of a photography break. I had anticipated catching far more films at Doc NYC, the documentary festival that is wrapping up its season here in New York. One film that I was able to catch, a nominee for Best Documentary at the "Australian Oscars", was Gracie Otto's The Last Impresario. It is a delightfully portrait of the life and career of the so-called most famous man you have never heard of, Michael White, and an entertaining trip down the film and theatre industry's memory lane. Otto discovered White when visiting the Cannes Film Festival and sought to document him, looking at the way he changed London's West End with original productions of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Oh! Calcutta! and many more, before getting into film production with the likes of Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

It's good to be Naomi Watts right now which is something of a surprise since last year it wasn't. But then the blonde Aussie's career has always been like that. Let's investigate.
Naomi Watts photographed by Mark Abrahams for More magazine
In the Posterized series, now beginning a new season so expect one each Friday, we look back at a star's career through their movie posters. Sometimes it's their giant sized faces and sometimes they don't appear on the poster at all. Such are the vagaries of stardom and advertisements.
In Naomi's film debut she didn't even get a name. The then 18 year old actress was billed as "Leo's Girlfriend" I couldn't find a movie poster of that one so we begin five years later when the actress, after a few TV stints debuted properly opposite her best friend Nicole Kidman in Flirting (1991) a terrific Australian coming of age movie you should seek out.

If you're a Hollywood star, your childhood friends usually have a limited number of roles available to play. They can be a loyal sidekick, your crew's comical mascot, or maybe the personal assistant who will eventually take you down in a bloodless celebrity coup. But for a lucky few stars, the people they grew up with became celebrities themselves, with their own fans, their own love interests and their own trending topics. It must be a welcome surprise. After all, it's lonely at the top, but it's a little less lonely when your childhood friends are there, too. In honor...

In the history of indie film, sequels haven’t been very common. If we exclude horror movies, that is. And now documentaries. There’s Clerks II, S. Darko, John Duigan’s Flirting, Wayne Wang’s Blue in the Face, Lars von Trier’s Manderlay, What Becomes of the Broken Hearted? and I guess The Road Warrior (and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome). There tend to be weird circumstances and technicalities for a lot of them, too. One of the purest examples of an indie sequel is, of course, Before Midnight, which is even rarer for being a third part. It’s possibly the most beloved and critically acclaimed film of the year, and it could very well lead a new wave of follow ups to indie favorites and cult classics that aren’t necessarily easily banked genre flicks. Back in May we learned of another indie threequel in the works, Hal Hartley’s Ned Rifle. The...

Naomi Watts is a good actress. There, I’ve got that out of the way. Although originally born in Shoreham, Kent, Watts began her career in 1986 appearing in The Love Alone, before setting on that familiar path of Australia-based actors – soaps. She then went on to supporting roles in films such as Flirting (good film, you should see it) before properly exploding onto the Hollywood scene with David Lynch’s surreal mind-f**k Mulholland Drive.
Since that role, she’s had an up-and-down career, churning out both brilliant films and absolute clunkers. She’s obviously extremely talented – you don’t get Oscar nominations for no reason – but like most actors outside of Daniel Day-Lewis, can occasionally fall foul of poor decision-making or a bad performance. From the advance reviews it appears she’s struck disaster again with Diana. For my money, this is a shame – most of the time, she...

They don't make funny movies any more, right? Wrong. If you're looking for a laugh, then here are some you may have missed...
For this list, blame The Hangover Part III. It was whilst walking out of that film that I got into a chat with someone, who was bemoaning the lack of genuinely funny movie comedies. Certainly, big budget Hollywood comedies have no end of problems right now - with the occasional exception - but I couldn't help thinking of the many neglected gems that had gone through my DVD player over the past decade or so.
As such, I started to put this list together. It's inevitably subjective, as one person's comedy is another person's snore fest. But I've tried to dig out a mix of comedies from the past three decades that have either flown under the radar completely, or...

Washington, Feb 8: Naomi Watts, who had a tough time getting established in Hollywood when she first moved there in the early 90s, has said that her A-list friend Nicole Kidman's words of encouragement helped her to stay motivated.
"She kept saying, 'It's just going to take one thing, one thing, Nay, and you know, if you're in a hit film...then everything changes'," Us magazine quoted her as saying during an interview with CBS' 'Sunday Morning.'
The 44-year-old actress and Kidman, co-starred in Australian indie film 'Flirting' back in 1991, and have remained close friends ever since.
She explained that she first moved.

Nicole Kidman stopped Naomi Watts from giving up her acting dreams. Naomi, 44 and 45-year-old Nicole have been friends since working together on the movie 'Flirting' in 1991 and when Nicole's Hollywood career took off, she urged Naomi not to give up. Speaking on CBS' 'Sunday Morning', Naomi said: 'She kept saying, 'It's just going to take one thing, one thing, Nay, and you know, if you're in a hit film...then everything changes.' 'Oh my God, I mean, I considered myself fairly sensitive, but I don't think a strong person could cope with [rejection] over and over again. There were moments when I was sure I was done. Oh yeah, but I didn't have a plan B really, I didn't.'...
