Lonely Amanda Shuffleup imagined her best friend Rudger three months, three weeks, and three days ago. They made a promise to each other that no matter what happens, they'll never disappear, protect each other, and never cry. The two spend their days flying through the sky on the back of a giant sparrow, visiting the chatty squirrel, admiring the ocean whale (that's a whale made of ocean), and trying not to get caught by a giant snow beast when drifting through a winter wonderland.
To Amanda's mother, it's nothing more than imaginative play, but for Amanda and Rudger, each adventure brings a fully realized world to life. Her creative mind makes Rudger a special imaginary friend, one that makes him the target for an evil adult who can see Imaginaries named Mr. Bunting, a Hawaiian shirt-clad creep who physically eats imaginary friends to maintain a connection with his longtime imaginary...

With the release of films like John Krasinski’s If, Blumhouse’s Imaginary, and even Ale de Jong’s 1991 comedy Drop Dead Fred, the power of imagination flows strongly throughout Hollywood. While each of the films mentioned above brings something different to the table, Yoshiyuki Momose’s latest animated feature, The Imaginary, hits differently. Studio Ponoc is proud to present The Imaginary trailer today, previewing an upcoming animated film to boggle the senses, stir emotions, and remind you of friends long forgotten.
Studio Ponoc‘s The Imaginary portrays the depths of humanity and creativity through the eyes of young Amanda and her imaginary companion, Rudger, a boy no one can see imagined by Amanda to share her thrilling make-believe adventures. But when Rudger, suddenly alone, arrives at The Town of Imaginaries, where forgotten Imaginaries live and find work, he faces a mysterious threat. Indie musical “Heart Strings” will have its Los Angeles premiere June 30 at American Cinematheque’s Loz Feliz Theater. Director Ate de Jong (“Drop Dead Fred”) co-wrote the film with Steven Gaydos, Variety executive VP, Global Content, who is also co-producing.
“It’s a great honor to screen at the American Cinematheque. And especially to play the film at their Los Feliz location where ‘Heart Strings’ first began as a screenplay decades ago when I lived there after working on a Roger Corman film in Georgia,” Gaydos said. “Fans of 1970s American indie cinema might be surprised to find that Ate de Jong has just made an audience-engaging film with the subversive spirit and maverick attitude of that time. It only took 50 years to get the job done, which I hope makes Francis Coppola feel better about ‘Megalopolis!’”

During her acting career, Carrie Fisher has delivered some of the most memorable performances that have forever etched her name in the minds of the viewers. Though she has worked in numerous films in her astounding film career, her most remarkable performance was that of Princess Leia Organa in George Lucas’ Star Wars franchise.
Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia Organa in Episode IV. Credits: Lucasfilm Ltd.
The character was everything that the audience wanted in a leading franchise, and she always jumped into action as she was a valuable member of the Rebel Alliance. Despite being a fan-favorite character, Fisher despised working in A New Hope, especially because there was one dialogue that did not sit well with the sequence. The line felt so bizarre to her that she decided to become a writer after delivering the out-of-place dialogue.

Paramount Pictures didn’t have a bad 2023 but had put a lot of hopes on the latest in the Mission: Impossible franchise to push them towards a great year. After Tom Cruise soared with Top Gun: Maverick, they had hoped fans would flock to theaters once again to see him in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning: Part One. Off that’s a long title. It underperformed, so the next film will get a new name. What can fans look forward to on Paramount’s 2024 release schedule?

When two stories with similar premises debut around the same time, awkwardness is natural. We're about to have the latest case of this in 2024.
On one hand, "If" (short for "Imaginary Friend"). He may not be Reed Richards in "Fantastic Four" as some had anticipated, but John Krasinski has leveraged his success directing "A Quiet Place" and its sequel. Now, with "If," he's pivoting away from horror to a family-friendly comedy. "If" is about a young girl named Bea (Cailey Fleming) who can see people's imaginary friends. She then discovers her middle-aged neighbor (Ryan Reynolds) has the same power. "If" is set for release in May 2024.
Even as Krasinski flexes his directorial skills in a different genre, a horror film about imaginary friends is releasing a couple of months earlier on March 8. "Imaginary," the latest jump scare monster movie from Blumhouse, follows a mother, Jessica (DeWanda Wise), and her stepdaughter...

Not only do Blumhouse productions tend to have such low budgets that it’s difficult for them to fail, but the company also makes so much content that you never go too long without seeing a new release from them. So if one disappoints, they have another chance to impress soon after. The Exorcist: Believer wasn’t well-received? That’s okay, Five Nights at Freddy’s is right around the corner. Night Swim didn’t live up to the success they had with M3GAN last year? Well, let’s see how Imaginary does on March 8th. With the release of Imaginary just one month away, a new poster for the film has arrived online and can be seen at the bottom of this article.
Imaginary is the latest team-up between Blumhouse and director Jeff Wadlow – who had previously collaborated on the 2018 film Truth or Dare and the 2020 horror version of Fantasy Island.

Dumb And Dumber’s Peter Farrelly’s latest film is Ricky Stanicky for Amazon Prime Video. Here’s the trailer and some details…
The Farrelly Brothers will forever be synonymous with slapstick, gross-out comedies like Dumb and Dumber and There’s Something About Mary, both of which are, gag for gag, among the funniest films of the 1990s.
Apart from belated sequel Dumb and Dumber To in 2014, the brothers have concentrated on solo projects. In recent years, Peter Farrelly has directed acclaimed 2018 film Green Book, while Bobby directed underrated 2023 comedy Champions.
Peter’s latest film is Ricky Stanicky, a comedy which sounds a bit like Drop Dead Fred or Ted. The synopsis reads as follows:

You’d have to forgive Laura Franco (Melissa Barrera) for being a little out of sorts these days. In short order, she’s been: diagnosed with cancer, dumped by her douchebag boyfriend, undergone radical treatment, moved back into her childhood home, realized said douchebag boyfriend has also absconded with the musical they wrote together (and given away the part literally made for her!), and discovered that the monster she thought she imagined in her youth is still very much alive and very much living in her closet (and played by the charming Tommy Dewey).
Filmmaker Caroline Lindy makes her feature directorial debut with “Your Monster,” but it’s a story she’s told before, both in life and on the screen.
Lindy’s passion for and connection to the material is obvious (how could it not be?), as is her desire to twist a sad story into something fresh and often funny.

After playing ahead of Five Nights at Freddy’s and teasing its arrival with an adorable motion poster, the trailer for Lionsgate and Blumhouse’s Imaginary is finally here. And it dares to tap into the concept of childhood innocence and imaginary friends, “Are they really figments of childhood imagination or is something more terrifying lying just beneath?”
Get ready to meet Chauncey. He’s not imaginary… and he’s not your friend, either.
The trailer has shades of Little Monsters, Drop Dead Fred, and Child’s Play.
DeWanda Wise (Jurassic World Dominion) will both star in and produce Imaginary, which is scheduled for theatrical release on March 8, 2024.
In the original horror movie, “Jessica moves back into her childhood home with her family. Her youngest stepdaughter Alice develops an eerie attachment to a stuffed bear named Chauncey she finds in the basement. Alice starts playing games with Chauncey that begin playful and become increasingly sinister.

John Krasinski is following up on his acclaimed horror directing with a partly animated family film that aims to emulate the child-like wonder of past Steven Spielberg movies. Krasinski is currently working on If, which stands for “Imaginary Friends.” If has already compiled a list of impressive actors lending their voices to the fantasy comedy. Notably, for fans of The Office, the animated movie will be reuniting Krasinski with his former Dunder-Mifflin boss, Steve Carell. The movie has already assembled Krasinski’s spouse, Emily Blunt, as well as Matt Damon, John Stewart, Maya Rudolph, Sam Rockwell, Sebastian Maniscalco, Christopher Meloni, Richard Jenkins, Awkwafina and Vince Vaughn.
Collider recently sat down with Krasinski as he promotes the fourth and final season of his hit action-spy series, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, which will be premiering on Prime Video on June 30. Krasinski discussed with Collider about his excitement to work with Ryan Reynolds,...

After working together on the 2018 film Truth or Dare and the 2020 horror version of Fantasy Island, director Jeff Wadlow and Blumhouse Productions are now collaborating on another horror project called Imaginary. Deadline reports that Lionsgate has acquired the worldwide rights to the film.
Wadlow has written the screenplay for Imaginary with Greg Erb, Jason Oremland, and Bryce McGuire, crafting the following story: A young woman returns to her childhood home only to discover that the imaginary friend she left behind is very real and very unhappy she left.
So it sounds sort of like a horrific take on the 1991 comedy Drop Dead Fred.
Lionsgate and Blumhouse are hoping to get Imaginary into production in the spring, so Wadlow is currently working to assemble the cast for the film. Lionsgate and Blumhouse are co-financing the project, with Lionsgate planning to present Imaginary to potential buyers at the European Film Market later this month.

At an emotional opening night event in a packed Doelen Grand Hall, Vanja Kaludjercic, festival director of the International Film Festival Rotterdam, expressed “her sense of relief and her gratitude” at being able finally to welcome guests “after a three-year wait”. These, she acknowledged, were “three years that actually changed the world as we knew [it]; three years that took a toll on all of us.

Producers of the indie film musical “Americana Dream” have tapped Nashville-based music artists Mary Sarah and Sam Varga to play the story’s central couple, Billie Carton and Lucky Fontana.
Sarah and Varga nabbed the leading roles after an extensive nationwide search for singer-songwriters to act in the original musical written and directed by Ate de Jong and co-written by Variety’s Steven Gaydos.
“Americana Dream” takes viewers behind the scenes of the film’s titular reality TV music competition program, where Lucky and Billie transition from imposters willing to do anything for money and fame, to a real couple, willing to sacrifice their dreams of success for real love and their real music.
Sarah was a finalist on season 10 of NBC’s “The Voice” and is set to star in Justin Ward’s upcoming film comedy “Paradise: The Movie.” Sarah recorded her first album “Bridges,” when she was only...

From princesses addicted to smart magic to wolf dogs wary of fake legends, putting a new spin on old tales was the prevailing theme at Ventana Sur’s New Spanish Animation showcase on Monday.
A collaboration between Spanish animation festival Weird Market, Ventana Sur’s Animation! and Spanish film agency Icaa, the best-of-Spain online showcase included two series, three feature projects and a work-in-progress.
Standout projects included “Masked Cinderella” a 26-part series in the mold of “Teen Titans” which reimagines the fairy tale universe for a superhero savvy, smart device-loving six to 12- year-old audience.
Former Imira Entertainment founder, Myriam Ballesteros is directing the 22-minute episode series, a co-production between her company, Mb Productions and the animation producer/distributor Mondo TV Iberoamérica.

Today marks the birthday of Fred MacMurray. Writer Joe Elliott provides a fitting tribute to the late actor.
By Joe Elliott
Classic Hollywood actor Fred MacMurray is probably best remembered today as the easy-going father in the popular, long-running 1960s family sit-com “My Three Sons.” As the head of the growing Douglas clan, the pipe-smoking, sweater-clad MacMurray each week dispensed his gentle blend of wisdom and humor to the delight of American television audiences. One might have thought this was the kind of role MacMurray had always played. Not so, a fact that was first brought home to me by my mother. I recall as a kid hearing her say she didn’t much care for him. Not like Fred MacMurray??? “But why?” I asked. “Because of the jerks he played in the movies,” she told me. It wasn’t until much later that I discovered what she meant. As many CinemaRetro readers will know,...

Marge Champion, a dancer and actress known for “Show Boat” and “Give a Girl a Break,” as well the model used by Walt Disney animators for the dancing in “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” has died. She was 101.
Champion died Wednesday in Los Angeles while quarantined with her son Gregg Champion, who confirmed her death to the New York Times.
At 14, Champion, born Marjorie Celeste Belcher, was hired as a model by Walt Disney Studios, dancing the part of Snow White so that animators could model her movements and enhance the realism of what would be Disney’s first animated feature film. Disney would later use her as a model for the Blue Fairy in “Pinocchio” (1940) and the hippo with twinkle toes in “Fantasia” (1940).
You can see a video of Belcher dancing to one of the songs from “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” below alongside the final footage of the film.

"When death comes, as it does for us all... Life is changed, not ended... They are never truly gone, for the spirit remains." A very unique short film to watch - now available online. Fred, stylized as f r e d, is a short film written and directed by British filmmaker Alexander Jeremy. It premiered at a few festivals last year and won an award for a spontaneous musical dance sequence. A woman struggles to come to terms with the loss of her fiancé, but below the surface, a darker story lurks. "Almost two years ago one of my best mates passed away. I decided to make a short film and dedicate it to him." Starring Samuel Woodhams as Fred, plus Susie Kimnell, Shaun Prendergast, & Nathan Gordon. "We are proud that we made something that is original, bold and unique," Jeremy states. And it certainly is. "Give yourself a half-hour and sink in.

J.K. Rowling might have hundreds of millions of dollars and be one of the most beloved authors in the world, but I don’t envy her for having to follow-up the Harry Potter series. Since that finished, her literary output has been consciously separate from it, going so far as to publish under the pen-name Robert Galbraith and release mystery books targeted at adults without fantastical elements.
But now she’s just announced a new story: The Ickabog. This was first written back in the mid-2000s while she was working on the final Harry Potter books, though is not a part of the Wizarding World. Her original plan was to publish it after The Deathly Hallows, but she instead shelved it and decided to shift her focus. In a series of tweets, she revealed the existence of the story, that the only people to have ever heard it are...

HBO Max, WarnerMedia’s long-awaited streaming service, launches Wednesday with hundreds of titles, including beloved TV series, blockbuster film franchises and some originals created specifically for the new platform.
And while we’re willing to bet you’ve heard classics like “Friends” and “The Big Bang Theory” are among the offerings that will be available at launch, we’re also pretty sure you don’t know how many other shows and movies you’ll have access to on Day 1.
And, as a bonus surprise, HBO announced all eight “Harry Potter” films as well as “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” will be available on launch day.
Well, don’t worry, because TheWrap has rounded up a list of the biggest films and TV series will be streaming on HBO Max at launch so that you can decide if it’s worth the $14.99/month price tag, which is bumped down to...

Well here we are. April is going to be a fairly sedentary and isolating month for a lot of people. At least we now thankfully have some guidance as to our entertainment options as HBO has released its new streaming releases for April 2020.
HBO’s original series premieres are pretty busy this month. The fourth season of Issa Rae’s excellent comedy Insecure arrives on April 12. That’s preceded by the fascinating docuseries Atlanta’s Missing and Murdered: The Lost Children and followed by book adaptation I Know This Much is True.
On the film side of things there are a few exciting options. Good Boys arrives on April 4, It: Chapter Two on April 11, and Stuber on April 18. Some older movies arriving on April 1 are Team America: World Police, Die Hard, and Slumdog Millionaire.
Here is everything else coming to HBO Now and HBO Go in April 2020 via HBO PR.

Patrick Schwarzenegger has a process for reading scripts. On his first time through, he’s just trying to get a sense of the story. Then he goes back and re-reads it through the eyes of the characters. On his third pass, he tries to put everything together thematically.
Even with such a specific methodology, Schwarzenegger, the 26-year-old son of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver, says he was initially caught off guard by the premise of “Daniel Isn’t Real,” about a young man named Luke (Miles Robbins) with an imaginary friend who goads him into committing violent acts. “When I first read the script, I was a little bit, like, ‘Whoa! What the f— is going on?,’” Schwarzenegger says. “And then, as I read it more, I got really interested. It brought up current issues — mental health and how pertinent it is today with young men, and the idea of toxic masculinity.

Rik Mayall wasn’t just a comedy genius, he was at the fundamental core of British comedy from the 80s’ until his untimely death. ‘Al Pacino: The Movies Behind The Man’ author and broadcaster, Mark Searby sheds light into the creative work of the man in his new book ‘Rik Mayall: Comedy Genius’.
With a career born from frustrations, opinions and political strains of the working class in the 1980s, Mayall and a motley crew of young fresh talent led the uprising of alternative comedy. Taking a lead from Punk music, they took no prisoners. It was politically incorrect, anarchic and stuck two fingers up to the establishment and furthermore, it stood for something. In its new form, Mayall and his compadres had made comedy into a vessel to speak freely and represent the feelings of a fresh, passionate and raw new generation, something that has since been remixed...

Veteran Dutch director Ate de Jong is set to shoot “My Best Friend Anne Frank,” the true story of the teenage diarist’s best friend, who also was sent to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp but survived and is still alive today.
The story, based on the memoirs of Frank’s friend Hannah Goslar, is told from her perspective. The best friends, shy Hannah and precocious Anne, are separated in 1942, but meet again in 1945 in the concentration camp, where Hannah risks her life to try to save Anne.
The film, budgeted at $3.4 million, is set to start shooting late this year, continuing into early next year, with a release in 2020, the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II.
De Jong’s credits as a producer or director include “Left Luggage,” “Enigma,” “All Men Are Mortal,” “Drop Dead Fred” and “Love Is Thicker Than Water.” The script is by Marian Batavier.

MaryAnn’s quick take… This would-be modern Romeo-and-Juliet tale is little more than a pile-on of class stereotypes, contrived dialogue, and one whopper of a coincidence. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Arthur (Johnny Flynn) hails from a family of miners in Wales, and now works as a bike messenger in London. Vida (Lydia Wilson: Star Trek Beyond) is a cellist who makes no money from her music, but that’s okay because her rich parents have bought her an amazing apartment in trendy East London. Now, Johnny is moving into that flat with Vida, and the two families are about to culture-clash.
From the directing team of Emily Harris and Ate de Jong (he’s best known for the 1991 cult film Drop Dead Fred), Love Is Thicker Than Water wants to be a modern Romeo-and-Juliet tale.

We revisit Drop Dead Fred, starring the late, great Rik Mayall...
Hey, snotfaces, what do you get when you mix Mary Poppins and Beetlejuice? Look no further than 1991's Drop Dead Fred, a fantasy comedy about an imaginary friend, which turns out to be about a woman's mental breakdown after years and years of emotional abuse.
If you're of a certain age and, much like Phoebe Cates' protagonist Elizabeth at the beginning of the movie, you haven't seen Fred since you were a child, you may remember it as a childhood staple that you were probably a bit young to be watching and for many, it might have been your introduction to Mayall's comic stylings. However, also like Lizzie, Fred's anarchic behaviour has different implications when you meet him again in adulthood.
He first re-emerges after Lizzie has lost the three major totems of adulthood - her marriage,...

If Troma ever remade Drop Dead Fred it would be Liam Regan’s Banjo… so I guess he beat them to it! However, there’s no hard feelings because there’s a cameo from Troma CEO Lloyd Kaufman. In this podcast/interview Nerdly writer and host of the Britflicks podcast, Stuart Wright, talks to Liam about making his first feature film; which tells the story of …“a young man [who] becomes manipulated by his imaginary friend to exact revenge on his tormenting co-workers.”
Check out my review of Banjo right here.

The British Academy Film Awards' decision not to include comedian Rik Mayall and award-winning actor Bob Hoskins in its 'In Memoriam' segment has proved controversial on social media.

Deadly Virtues is a lean beast of a film, and whilst it lacks the visual flair of The Guest or the high suspense of White Settlers, what it contributed to this year’s FILM4 FrightFest home invasion trilogy was an invasive descent into human nature – spiralling into the depths of repression and emotional and physical abuse.
A seemingly simple tale on the surface of one woman forced to play the role of the dutiful and loving wife for the weekend whilst hubby is left maimed and tied up in the bathtub; Deadly Virtues starts out as a run of the mill home invasion film. The tension initially stems from the fear of a nasty little low budget number, although it soon becomes apparent that this is not the path writer Mark Rogers and director Ate de Jong intend to lead us down.

From a range of eras and genres, here's Jenny and Alex's light-hearted pick of 50 great opening title sequences from the movies...
Odd List
We don’t go to the cinema much, because we hate people. We also don’t go because there’s always the risk of accidentally going to see the wrong film. It's not helped by the fact that there's no way of telling until it’s too late, because there are no bloody opening credits on lots of modern films. And by the time you do realise, you’ve eaten all your popcorn and you can’t be bothered to move.
The movies on this list won’t give you that problem. These opening credits are perfect scene setters for the movies that follow, so you won’t have to worry about awkward popcorn wasting moments. It's not a top 50, rather a selection of 50 interesting credits sequences,...

BBC Two will pay tribute to Rik Mayall on Sunday night (June 15).
The comedian - who died aged 56 on Monday (June 9) - will feature in a classic episode of Bottom at 10.30pm, in place of a Qi repeat.
Rik Mayall's 5 best roles: From Young One Rick to Drop Dead Fred
The first series episode 'Gas' originally aired on the channel back in 1991.
'Gas' features Richie (Mayall) and Eddie (Ade Edmondson) being caught for stealing next door's gas supply, before seemingly beating the gas man to death with frying pans.
BBC Two will also broadcast a repeat of Comedy Connections: The Young Ones at 11pm. The special looks back at the classic 1980s sitcom, featuring archive interviews with Mayall.
Rik Mayall 1958-2014 obituary: A true one-off and comedy eccentric

There's something horribly grim about stalking somebody's social media accounts after they've died, but it is fitting of the late Rik Mayall that a glance at what might have been a brief foray into the world of Twitter should provide much amusement.
Assuming it was actually his, Mayall's journey into Twitter lasted a single tweet back in 2010 and it was suitably brash, uncompromising, sweary and laugh-out-loud funny. Exactly like the man who so many TV viewers had grown to love over the last 30 years.
Opening my very own Twitter to stop another bastard from doing it. So fuck off & don't expect to hear from me any time soon. Love Rik x

Mayall grew up in Harlow, Essex, but it was as a drama student at Manchester University where his career began as he forged a long-standing friendship and comedy double act with Ade Edmondson. The duo...

I don’t often do death notices here, mostly because everyone else on Earth will let you know whenever anyone dies. But, today Rik Mayall passed away, and though everyone else on Earth will still probably mention the fact to you, those in the U.S. probably won’t truly appreciate the loss. More importantly, there’s a sense in which I feel that I’ve lost a friend.
Even for those who knew a bit of his work, the majority will wonder about the outpouring of comment circulating the internet, especially when you have things like Ricky Gervais saying -
Rip Rik Mayall. An icon of modern British comedy.

Now, I have to tell you that this tweet originally said – “A godfather of modern comedy.” Who knows what happened there, but the original statement didn’t need to be corrected.
Whether we’re splitting hairs over godfather vs.
