Doctor Who gained widespread recognition, majorly for its unique storytelling, bringing a fresh perspective on regeneration, and influencing a generation of viewers since the 1960s. The show features an intriguing concept of the Doctor’s regeneration, which allows the character to transform into a new form with a different personality.

It’s my obligatory caveat that I am not a Doctor Who “fan,” per se. I’m much more Who-curious.
While I was traumatized by Tom Baker’s Doctor in childhood, I’ve happily sampled the introduction of each new Doctor since the Christopher Eccleston reboot in 2005. After two or three episodes, I tend to tune out, checking back in at key or particularly acclaimed installments. For those keeping score, David Tennant’s Doctor was the one I watched the most of in total, though I stuck with Matt Smith for the longest in the beginning (Karen Gillan’s Amy Pond was responsible for a lot of that). Peter Capaldi, probably the Doctor I was most excited for based on previous credits, did the least for me.
Draw your own conclusions.

Since 1963, the British sci-fi series Doctor Who has captivated fans across the world. There have been 39 seasons (and counting!), but that’s where things get a bit wibbly wobbly, timey wimey, to borrow a phrase from The Doctor. The show follows the Doctor, a time lord who travels across space and time in the Tardis (Time and Relative Dimension in Space), which looks like a police box and is bigger on the inside, with a companion (or several). When the Doctor is fatally wounded, he or she regenerates, changing the physical form and allowing for new leads over the years. Doctor Who returns for its 14th season since the show was revived in 2005 on May 10, and not only will it be the first full season with Ncuti Gatwa—who has already won us over with one full Christmas special following a surprise appearance in the last of ...

This week's episode of the Empire Podcast sees Chris Hewitt, Helen O'Hara and James Dyer cram into the podbooth just minutes after returning to London from a live show in Norwich, which was part of the pod's March tour. And, despite their exhaustion, they throw themselves into a fun episode that involves a deep dive into the filmographies of every actor who's played The Doctor in Doctor Who, an in-depth discussion of the upcoming Oscars that takes up pretty much the entire movie news section, and reviews of Damsel, Ricky Stanicky, and Origin.
Guest-wise, it's another belter, as Chris has lovely chats with the wonderful Robin Wright, star of Damsel and Helen's personal fave, The Princess Bride (25:02 - 39:43 approx.), before welcoming back the magnificent DeWanda Wise, star of this week's horror film, Imaginary (1:02:11 - 1:21:17 approx). The international scope and grueling human cost of the global refugee crisis lends itself to contemporary epic filmmaking of a particularly sober stripe, as seen mostly recently in Agnieszka Holland’s “Green Border” and Matteo Garrone’s Oscar-nominated “Io Capitano.” Shorn of their ripped-from-the-headlines urgency, such stories of humans crossing vast distances and facing hostile odds in pursuit of a better life are as old as time itself. A muscular, assured debut feature from U.S. producer-turned-director Brandt Andersen, “The Strangers’ Case” stresses the sprawling scale of the situation with a chaptered structure that pivots between multiple involved parties in the refugee’s journey, from warmongers to traffickers to rescuers to the displaced victims themselves.
That wide span, however, prevents a particularly penetrating look at any individual experience of the crisis. Brandt draws his characters in broad, flat strokes that serve the architecture of the narrative — and its cumulative, practically...

A year ago, we heard that Jeffrey Reddick, whose horror credits include Final Destination, Final Destination 2, Tamara, Day of the Dead 2008, Dead Awake, and Don’t Look Back, was teaming up with fellow genre regulars Felissa Rose (Sleepaway Camp) and Dave Sheridan (Victor Crowley) to produce the slasher New Fears Eve. That project is now making its way through post-production – and as we head into the holiday weekend, a poster for New Fears Eve has arrived online! Wahey, it’s Christmas. Time to celebrate by ranking television designed to air when everyone is drunk or angry or asleep or all three. This is exactly what Jesus would have wanted.
The Doctor Who Festive Specials have been part of the BBC’s Christmas and New Year’s Day line-up since 2005 – times when there’s something of a captive audience who might not normally watch the show. Unlike the 1965 Christmas Day episode, the hope is that they’ll attract a broader audience. Some episodes are more forgiving for casual viewers than others. Some episodes will garner the ultimate praise from your father-in-law: complete silence for the duration followed by ‘That was rather good’. Some episodes make absolutely no sense to anyone who only watches at Christmas.
Including Chris Chibnall’s three New Year specials (but not ‘Spyfall’ because it’s a series opener rather than a one-off special episode) brings us to 17 stories,...

King Charles III’s Christmas Day message topped Ncuti Gatwa’s debut in Doctor Who, dominating the UK ratings charts on December 25.
The King’s Christmas Broadcast, which is the monarch’s annual address to the British people, took over 6.5 million viewers, according to official data from overnights.tv. The bulk of viewing (5.2 million) was on BBC1, with BBC2, ITV, ITV3, Sky News and Gb News and ITV1’s +1 channel also contributing to the total. Including viewing across the day, the total was around 7.5 million, with BBC1 pulling in 5.9 million.
Combined, the live viewing total was more than a Strictly Come Dancing Christmas special, which was second with 5.4 million on BBC1 and the heavily-anticipated Doctor Who special, which took 4.5 million as The Doctor regenerated as Sex Education and Barbie star Gatwa. The 14th season of Doctor Who was this week confirmed to launch on BBC1 in the UK and on...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the Doctor Who 2023 Holiday Special “The Church on Ruby Road.”] “Once upon a time, late on Christmas Eve, a stranger came to the church on Ruby Road. She carried in her arms the most precious gift of all: a newborn child, a baby girl. Just before midnight, she left her daughter on the steps of the church. The child was taken in, and they named her Ruby after the place where she was found. As for the mother, she was never seen again. No one ever knew her name, until that night, a time traveler came to call, a traveler known as The Doctor.” With that, Doctor Who introduces us to Ruby as a baby, then shows her later as a young adult (Millie Gibson), having been adopted by Clara (Michelle Greenidge) and still knowing nothing about her parents. At one point in the special, The Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa, already fantastic...

The Doctor we viewers meet as hero of the latest “Doctor Who” Christmas special is unlike any other we’ve met in the 60-year history of the character.
He’s suave in a non-geeky way. He can command a dance floor. He can actually sing. And he’s a Black man.
After watching Ncuti Gatwa’s impressive debut as the first Black, male incarnation of the Time Lord hero at the center of the BBC’s venerated science fiction franchise, this Black male TV critic is fascinated and hopeful at the possibilities that lie ahead.
But I’ve also got a few other fervent hopes — deep wishes that have been rolling around my mind ever since I first stumbled on The Doctor as a fan in my childhood, watching Tom Baker as the Fourth Doctor, ambling about like a shock-haired, spacefaring, time traveling version of Gene Wilder, in reruns which...

Sixty years is but the blink of an eye for a time-traveler like The Doctor. But for a television series, a Diamond Anniversary is an extremely rare and impressive occurrence.
BBC’s Doctor Who recently celebrated such a milestone with three one-hour specials which, for the first time, streamed globally on Disney+.
Russell T Davies, fresh from his success on ’80s AIDS miniseries It’s a Sin, returned to the show he brought back so successfully to the BBC in 2005. Bolstering his team are returning producers Julie Gardner and Phil Collinson, as well as Jane Tranter, the woman who was instrumental in bringing back Doctor Who in 2005. Bad Wolf, the company founded by Tranter and Gardner in 2015, currently produces the show with BBC Studios.
Another big returning name return was David Tennant, who played the 10th Doctor from 2005 to 2010 and who also returned for the show’s 50th anniversary in 2013. Beloved by fans and audiences alike,...

Christopher Eccleston, who left Doctor Who after one season as The Doctor in 2005, has become much more vocal about his decision to leave the fan-favorite show in the decades since the end of his brief (but beloved) tenure. Speaking to a crowd of Doctor Who fans gathered at the For the Love of Sci-Fi convention in Manchester, England earlier this month, Eccleston was brutally honest about what it would take for him to return as the Doctor: “Sack Russell T Davies, sack Jane Tranter, sack Phil Collinson, sack Julie Gardner, and I’ll come back. Can you arrange that?” All four creatives are of course back at the helm of the show, with Davies once again serving as showrunner and working with Bad Wolf, the production company founded by Gardner and Tranter.

If you’d polled a million Doctor Who fans last week asking them to predict what would happen in “Wild Blue Yonder” – the second of three 60th anniversary specials – not a single one of them would have come close to guessing what that wild ride of an episode entailed. This leaves us wondering: what on earth have they got lined up for “The Giggle”, the third and final episode?
Some things we’ve known for a while: David Tennant and Catherine Tate will be back as the fourteenth Doctor and Donna Noble, Neil Patrick Harris will play The Toymaker – a Who villain that we haven’t seen on TV since the sixties – and Jemma Redgrave is back as Unit boss Kate Lethbridge-Stewart.
Pretty much everything else we know has been gleaned from cryptic glimpses in teasers and trailers – so let’s put all the evidence we have so far together:...

Even if you don’t immediately recognize the name Frances Sternhagen, there’s still a good chance that you’ve seen her acting in something at some point over the decades. Sternhagen has stage and screen credits going back decades, and over that time she racked up Emmy nominations and Tony wins. Sadly, it’s being reported today that she passed away of natural causes this past Monday, at the age of 93.
Sternhagen earned her first screen credit on the TV show Producers’ Showcase in 1955, and went on to work on 75 other projects, including the Burt Reynolds comedy Starting Over, the Sean Connery sci-fi classic Outland, Independence Day – the 1983 drama, not the alien invasion movie; Dudley Moore’s Romantic Comedy, the John Lithgow / Morgan Freeman drama Resting Place, the Michael J. Frances Sternhagen, a Tony-winning actress with many decades on the stage and screen, died Monday of natural causes in New Rochelle, N.Y.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the first Doctor Who 60th anniversary special “The Star Beast.”] “Why did this face come back?” Though that question is asked throughout “The Star Beast,” it goes unanswered thus far. But Doctor Who’s very fun, delightful, nostalgia-filled, cinematic, and, at times, funny first 60th anniversary special, featuring brilliant performances by David Tennant and Catherine Tate as The Doctor and Donna Noble again does solve one major problem. At times, it feels like Tennant and Tate never left and The Doctor and Donna never parted — especially during a moment involving his sonic screwdriver (used in impressive ways). As Donna says near the end, “it’s like the old days.” But there’s the matter of aliens running around and, as The Doctor and Donna recap somewhat awkwardly for viewers to open the episode, the fact that she saved the universe by taking the power of a ...

This was a deliberate choice by showrunner Russell T Davies. Speaking in the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine, Davies revealed his dream that the second special would air with no previews whatsoever:

The new season, which will feature Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor, will premiere in 2024. Plus, there’s a new trailer. These three specials reunite the Doctor with Donna Temple-Noble as they come face-to-face with their most terrifying villain yet: the Toymaker (Neil Patrick Harris). In addition to Tennant and Tate, returning for these episodes are Jacqueline King as Sylvia Noble, Karl Collins as Shaun Temple, and Jemma Redgrave as ...

The BBC firmly switched the hype for the 60th anniversary Doctor Who specials up a few dozen notches on Saturday when it aired a brand-new two-minute trailer for the episodes just before Strictly Come Dancing. And if – like the new Strictly cast – the trailers were being marked by Craig Revel-Horwood, it might even have earned a rare use of his 10 paddle:
What a belter that was. Explosions! Potty-mouthed Donna Noble! A helicopter flying The Doctor over the swanky new Unit HQ in London! Kate! David Tennant acting his socks off, and also getting walloped by Donna’s mum Sylvia! A two-second glimpse of Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor!
And – finally – confirmation that Neil Patrick Harris will be recreating the Toymaker (formerly known as Celestial), a truly terrifying villain who first appeared back in the sixties, and who makes people his playthings by trapping them in twisted games and making them fight for their freedom.

Warning: contains spoilers for Sex Education seasons 1-4
The first series of Netflix teen drama Sex Education came out so long ago – in January 2019, pre-Covid, aka The Before Times – that it’s hard to remember a baby Otis and Eric turning up at their first day of sixth form. But even on day one, Ncuti Gatwa as Eric foreshadowed just how big a journey the characters would go on throughout the show’s four series, telling Otis (Asa Butterfield): “We shall transform from lowly caterpillars into… awesome killer whales?”
Back then, Eric was one of the only two gay people in his year, and he was constantly bullied, literally being pushed up against the lockers and called a “f**” in the first episode, as if the show was trying to win a full house in Stereotypical High School Drama Bingo. Later in the series, he’s the victim of a drive-by gay bashing,...

In order to play the role of Nebula, the murderous mostly-android character in James Gunn's "Guardians of the Galaxy" movies, actress Karen Gillan had to undergo a lengthy and uncomfortable makeup process. According to makeup artist David White, Gillan's facial prosthesis was constructed of five specially fitted plates that would be glued to her over the course of about four and a half hours. She also had to wear incredibly thick contact lenses to black out her eyes and, to accommodate the cranial appliances, shave her head. Gillan shaved and remained bald throughout the shooting schedules of each of her Marvel Cinematic Universe appearances.
This meant that she was without hair throughout most of 2013, when the first "Guardians" movie was being filmed. One can find photos of that film's premiere, and see that her hair was still growing out.

As kids and adults alike, millions of people dream of becoming movie stars. For some actors who make it, though, success on the big screen isn’t everything it’s built up to be. And while most still choose to stay, some stars leave Hollywood to pursue other careers. One such example is Charlie Korsmo, who played the son of Robin Williams’ character in Hook.
Korsmo’s face may be familiar to those who grew up in the 90s. The child star also appeared in movies like Dick Tracy. However, the actor’s career in Hollywood was short-lived, retiring from acting at a young age. Instead, Korsmo pursued a career in academia and is now a successful law professor.

This Star Trek: Picard article contains spoilers.
With a few episodes yet to go, the third season of Star Trek: Picard has already made good on its promise of a Next Generation sequel, but it’s done even more than we expected, nodding to all of ’90s Star Trek. Not only has the primary conflict been a follow-up to the Dominion War shown in Deep Space Nine, but main cast character Seven of Nine has been given time to wax fondly about her time on the USS Voyager. And even though her reunion with Tuvok turned out to be a ruse by the Changelings, at least we didn’t have to see anyone get their eyeballs ripped out!
So it shouldn’t be much of a surprise that Picard‘s showrunner wants to keep the good times going past the third and final season of Picard. Showrunner Terry Matalas has...

The identity of the newest doctor on "Doctor Who" has been revealed: Ncuti Gatwa. Each time the doctor regenerates, fans question whether the new doctor will be able to follow in the old one's footsteps. But most seem to be celebrating the news of Gatwa's casting.
"This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care," said Gatwa in a statement to BBC. "I will endeavor my utmost to do the same." Gatwa also elaborated on his determination to do justice to the show. "There aren't quite the words to describe how I'm feeling. A mix of deeply honored, beyond excited, and of course, a little bit scared. Unlike the doctor, I may only have one heart but I am giving it all to this show.

Rose Tyler was the first companion of the Doctor after the “Doctor Who” television series returned from nearly a decade-long hiatus. This was also the first time audiences witnessed the possibility of a Doctor being romantically involved with a companion, though this was never clearly fleshed out in the series. So, the topic of today’s discussion is Rose Tyler, and how exactly she has evolved in the “Doctor Who” television series.
Who Is Rose Tyler?
Rose Tyler, portrayed by former pop star Billie Piper, was a companion of Christopher Eccleston’s Ninth and David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor on the “Doctor Who” television series. Rose, a shop assistant, later knighted as Dame Rose of the Powell Estate in her adventures with the Doctor, became his feisty companion that was ready to sacrifice herself for the Doctor and stand up to him when necessary.

Entering into a post-“Money Heist” phase, the Spanish TV fiction industry is immersed in international growth strategies as it promotes at home new and original voices that create TV stories with universal appeal.

The last time Jody Houser and Roberta Ingranata were playing in the Dr. Who sandbox, they were giving us the rather fabulous Missy 4-parter. That is for another day of course, and for now we’ll focus on the classics. This book looks at first glance as the perfect playground for Jody Houser’s writing. She loves her classic Doctor’s, and is the master, no pun intended, of adding new wrinkles to what has come before. Let’s jump in.
The ‘Previously…’ blurb, which all books should have, gives us a nice idea of what’s to come. The Eighth Doctor, the last innocent incarnation before the Time War,...

The Doctor is out. Jodie Whittaker and “Doctor Who” showrunner Chris Chibnall will exit the series in the fall of 2022, BBC confirmed on Thursday.
Whittaker and Chibnall’s farewell will come in a trio of specials that will air as part of the BBC’s Centenary celebrations, and on BBC America in the U.S. The BBC had already previously announced a six-part Season 13 coming in the fall and two specials planned for 2022, but BBC One has now ordered an additional third feature-length adventure to conclude Whittaker and Chibnall’s “Doctor Who” run next year.
Whittaker is the Thirteenth Doctor and the first woman to hold the role, having entered “Doctor Who” when Chibnall took over the show in 2017.
Chibnall was also responsible for bringing in “Doctor Who” cast members Tosin Cole (Ryan), Mandip Gill (Yaz) and Bradley Walsh (Graham), plus Sacha Dhawan as the latest incarnation of The Master...

“Doctor Who” stars Bradley Walsh and Tosin Cole will be leaving the Jodie Whittaker-led series after its upcoming New Year’s Day special, “Revolution of the Daleks,” BBC America revealed in an interview with the cast and showrunner Chris Chibnall Monday.
“Well as the Doctor I will say that the fam as a four is no more,” Whittaker said, when asked about the “rumors flying around” about this being the “end of the fam,” referring to The Doctor (played by Whittaker), Graham O’Brien (Walsh), Ryan Sinclair (Cole) and Yasmin Khan (Mandip Gill).
Per BBC America, the “Doctor Who” holiday special “Revolution of the Daleks” picks up where Season 12 left off, with the 13th Doctor locked away in an alien prison and Yaz, Ryan and Graham far away on Earth and having to carry on with their lives without her. However, they soon discover a disturbing plan forming. A plan which involves a Dalek.
