Bethesda’s Starfield was supposed to be its crowning achievement in 2023. After the acquisition from Microsoft, it’s the first game from the developers that is exclusive to the Xbox (for now). However, it fell short of many expectations, leaving a void for fans of games set in space.
To make up for the lackluster performance of the Xbox exclusive, fans have been looking for other titles with a similar setting and vibe. Well, these gamers found refuge in a game that was released a little before Starfield but offered players a much better experience, one that is now improved further.

The pun-packed, Arnie-starring original that strayed wildly from Stephen King’s book is one trashy 80s sci-fi romp that could actually benefit from a remake
Why bother remaking much-loved 80s and 90s science fiction movies? Frankly it never ends well. Len Wiseman’s 2012 reworking of Total Recall, with a baffled-looking Colin Farrell taking over from Arnold Schwarzenegger as the amnesiac dreamer of futuristic secret agent dreams, struggled to capture the bombast of the superbly trashy Paul Verhoeven original, and never even made it to mutant-heavy Mars. The maverick Dutch director’s 1987 version of RoboCop is a gloriously effective corporate satire masquerading as an all-guns-blazing actioner, but its 2014 remake from José Padilha (despite a stellar cast) seemed to smooth off all those rough, wonderfully stop-motion fuelled sci-fi edges and somehow lose something in the process.
How, then, should we greet the news that another of Arnie’s nutty sci-fi romps, 1987’s The Running Man,...

Arnold Schwarzenegger has accomplished a fair bit in his life. The man came over from Austria having served in the army, claimed the Mr. Olympia title a full seven times, then launched one of the most successful Hollywood careers in the history of the industry, before becoming governor of California and finding time to marry a Kennedy in the process. But surely what he's really concerned with are his Rotten Tomato scores.
Having recently starred in his own Netflix series, "Fubar," recounted his remarkable life in the streamer's "Arnold" documentary, and whipped Jake from State Farm into shape for a Super Bowl commercial, the Austrian Oak is now gearing up for his Christmas comedy with "Reacher" star Alan Ritchson. But between all this stuff, you've got to imagine that Arnie was eager to hurry back to his trailer and pore over the pages of Rt, desperately scouring for the latest...

Before his mid-career upswing — starting either with “The Lobster” or “The Beguiled” and running through recent scorchers like “After Yang” and “The Banshees of Inisherin” — it’s worth remembering that Colin Farrell used to make bad movies, too. Now, his hot streak includes an Oscar nomination and a successful blockbuster franchise (soon with its own TV spinoff), but back then, for every “New World” and “In Bruges,” there was a “London Boulevard” and “Dead Man Down.” “Disappointing” may be a better descriptor of his star-forming era, with the “Total Recall” and “Fright Night” reboots, as well as earlier flops like “Alexander,” “The Recruit,” and “S.W.A.T.” But no matter how you remember them (if you remember them), Farrell’s early career offered uncertain quality. Of course, TV fans needn’t be reminded that Farrell’s charming Irish talents have gone to waste in projects unworthy of his efforts. We shan’t...

One of the biggest sleeper hits this year has definitely been IFC/Shudder’s Late Night With the Devil. Despite having a tiny budget and a very limited release window in theaters, the movie has still managed to gross a pretty amazing $6.2 million (and counting) at the box office. One day, it even managed to make an unholy $666,666, which, to be sure, is the kind of headline you just can’t make up. Star David Dastmalchian is a legend in the horror/ sci-fi community and seems on the verge of true leading-man status. While, throughout his career, he’s shared the screen with many iconic stars, it turns out there was one name in the cast list that impressed him more than any other.
“I’m been in movies with some very cool people, Harrison Ford to name one,” said Dastmalchian. “But, being in a film where Michael Ironside is...

Visual effects veteran Tim McGovern, who received a Special Achievement Oscar for the VFX in the 1990 sci-fi classic “Total Recall,” has died, his wife Reena NeGandhi announced Saturday on social media. He was 68.
The VFX innovator served as CGI director on Paul Verhoeven’s “Total Recall,” which starred Arnold Schwarzenegger and was based on Philip K. Sharon Stone has been associated with some of the sexiest moments in screen history, with hormones practically radiating off the screen in “Basic Instinct” and “Total Recall.” But there’s one occasion where chemistry with her costar did not come across, and on Louis Theroux’s podcast she revealed late producer Robert Evans’ coercive suggestion to correct that.
Evans, who died at 89 in 2019, suggested that she have sex with her “Sliver” costar Billy Baldwin. Then, surely, they’d have true chemistry.

In the late eighties/ early nineties, shortly after they did Predator together, Arnold Schwarzenegger, John McTiernan and writer Shane Black were all set to team on a big-budget movie adaptation of the DC comic book Sgt. Before praising the 2024 Oscars and their approach to sex, we need to acknowledge one truth. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences completely ignored one of the best movies of the year, and a movie that features one of the most frank and vulnerable sexual scenes committed to film. It, of course, involves a bathtub, where one man’s desire for another becomes clear in a way that not even he had heretofore acknowledged.
What? No, not Saltburn. I said a good movie, not a loud nothing that approaches sex like a 12-year-old who just learned a few rude words.
I’m referring to the beautiful Andrew Haigh film All of Us Strangers, which received no Oscar attention, not even for its outstanding leads Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal. Since he made his Hollywood debut in the 2000 Vietnam War drama "Tigerland," Colin Farrell's career has had some downs and some ups. All in all, though, he's largely outgrown his 2000s playboy reputation and is deservedly recognized as one of the best movie stars we've got. Farrell's got the eloquent soul of an artist, the way only an Irishman does.
After Farrell's earlier and fruitless efforts to be an action hero, he's learned to not let his occasional franchise gigs distract him from more personal work. Not all his work is on film either. In 2024, he'll be returning to television with two crime drama roles.

After Farrell's earlier and fruitless efforts to be an action hero, he's learned to not let his occasional franchise gigs distract him from more personal work. Not all his work is on film either. In 2024, he'll be returning to television with two crime drama roles.

Many first spied Sharon Stone when she made her wordless big-screen debut in 1980, billed as Pretty Girl on the Train, in Woody Allen’s “Stardust Memories.” She does leave an impression while blowing a kiss from behind a train window. As Stone has said, “I gave it my best shot to melt that sucker.”
She would come to define a ‘90s brand of sex symbol, one who was more in control of her fate in films and not afraid to enjoy sex as well as dabbling in lethal behavior. Her signature performance remains 1992’s “Basic Instinct,” as a bisexual psychopath with likely murderous intent. It is hard not to acknowledge that the quality of her films has been up and down, resulting in nine Razzie nominations, including three wins. But she compensated when she poured her soul into Ginger McKenna, a booze-addicted, me-first ex-hooker married to Robert De Niro’s...

John Wick regular Ian McShane has been quite frank about spin-off Ballerina and its reshoots. “They’ve got to make it better,” he says.
The great Ian McShane is currently on the promo tour for his latest film, the drama-thriller American Star, in which he plays an ageing hitman – we’ve seen it, and we really rather liked it.
On BBC One magazine programme The One Show, meanwhile, McShane has talked with remarkable frankness about the forthcoming Ballerina – a spin-off from the John Wick action series in which he’s regularly appeared. In the wake of recent reports that the film is to be delayed until June 2025 – a full year – to allow for new action sequences to be shot, McShane offered his own perspective on the production.
According to him, the film isn’t undergoing reshoots, but entirely new scenes. He also confirmed that Chad Stahelski, director of the mainline John Wick films,...

When "Star Trek" first aired in the late 1960s, it wasn't an overwhelmingly popular hit. When the show was canceled in 1969, it was put into eternal syndication, and it wouldn't be until the mid-1970s that Trekkies would begin to appear in earnest. "Star Trek" conventions started to pop up in hotel ballrooms across the nation, and "Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry would occasionally appear at said conventions to discuss his creation with his many fans.
It was during these conversations, really, that Roddenberry began to mentally highlight the messages he put into "Star Trek." Fans, he saw, were responding to Trek's depiction of a world without war and money, a world where diplomacy and exploration took precedence over conquest and acquisition. Many loved the show's diversity.
When it came time to create "Star Trek: The Next Generation" in 1986, it appeared Roddenberry was eager to shift Trek's themes into overdrive. "Next...

In November of 1993, writer/director John Lafia (Child’s Play 2) unleashed Cujo Cocaine Bear (great punk band name) upon the world with Man’s Best Friend. In the movie, a Tibetan Mastiff named Max 3000 is released from a genetic research facility by a reporter named Lori (Breakfast Club’s Ally Sheedy) while trying to expose a company for their cruel experiments on animals. We eventually learn that while Max might look like the best boy ever, he has a lot more in common with Wesley Snipes’ Simon Phoenix character from Demolition Man than he does Lassie.
While in the lab’s care, Max has been experimented on and genetically enhanced with the DNA of a slew of dangerous animals. For example, if threatened he can camouflage himself with the colors of your garage and hide there like a chameleon before deciding to pop out and bite your dick off. He has super strength,...

Sharon Stone was one of the most influential actresses in Hollywood. Throughout her lengthy career, she has starred in many different, deeply impactful roles, that have helped her establish herself as a truly talented actress. These characters have also had a serious cultural significance, that has helped in her getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct
Interestingly enough, despite having more than a few accolades under her name and respect in the industry, she has only been nominated for an Academy Award once in her career. It would seem that the actress also had to fight, tooth and nail, for the mention. Stone revealed that she was told some extremely harsh predictions by the Oscars.

Helldivers 2 is not an official Starship Troopers game, though it’s easy to see why so many people are mistaking it for one. Like Starship Troopers, Helldivers 2 features a group of overly patriotic soldiers using massive sci-fi weapons to battle hordes of bug-like alien creatures. More than just a cute series of stylistic coincidences, Helldivers developer Arrowhead Game Studios has gone out of its way to invite and celebrate Starship Troopers‘ influence on their projects. Helldivers’ debut trailer is even a thinly veiled parody of/tribute to Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 sci-fi action film and (to a slightly lesser degree) the book that the movie is based on.
The fact that there is a major 2024 video game that has people fondly recalling Starship Troopers without ever actually naming that movie is pretty wild. After all, Starship Troopers was eviscerated by most critics and audiences at the time of its release and for many years after.

Dave Bautista is set to team up with Samuel L. Jackson for the upcoming action-adventure film “Afterburn” for Black Bear, Endurance Media, Dogbone Entertainment and Original Films, the companies announced Tuesday.
“Afterburn” will be directed by veteran stunt coordinator and rising director J.J. Perry, who recently wrapped the Bautista thriller “The Killer’s Game” for Lionsgate.
The screenplay is based on the graphic novel “Afterburn,” set ten years after a massive solar flare destroyed technology across the globe.
Bautista stars as Jake, a treasure hunter who gets hired to recover the Mona Lisa before a dangerous warlord can steal it for himself. Jackson has been cast in an unspecified role. Filming is slated to begin this April in Europe.

Zombies often take the horror-comedy to a new level. In their shambling quest to mine humor from the most horrific circumstances, zombie comedies invert the apocalyptic nihilism that an outbreak of the undead tends to elicit. They also subvert the expectations of zombie horror, frequently going meta to poke fun at some of the most time honored tropes.
Because it’s Monday, we could all use a laugh or three. So, this week’s streaming picks are dedicated to zombie comedies that aim not for the jugular (or brain) but your funny bone.

You do not hire Jason Statham to read love poems onscreen, or to weep gently at the sight of nuzzling puppies, or to gaze thoughtfully at a particularly breathtaking sunset. You hire the Derbyshire native to kick ass and take names, with the “names” part being optional. The cinematic missing link between Bruce Willis and Charles Bronson, Statham has been keeping a certain type of genre film alive for close to two decades. He’s not the last action hero standing — his Hobbs & Shaw partner Dwayne Johnson continues to flirt with big,...

It almost goes without saying a lot of the time, but it’s never a surprise when a filmmaker isn’t a fan of someone else remaking their work. Obviously, some of that is tied to the ego, as creative folks don’t want other people tinkering with their art. But in the case of Paul Verhoeven, when he’s talking about two high-profile remakes of his films, “Total Recall” and “RoboCop,” his issues are less about the idea of someone else taking a shot at the same subject matter and more about people missing the point.

As far as late ‘80s and early ‘90s sci-fi goes, it’s tough to top RoboCop and Total Recall, two wildly astute takes on what the current climate was and what we could expect in the future from major corporations and technology. Not surprisingly, studios felt the need to give “updates” to both in the 21st century. For the most part, both failed. But that’s not just us saying so, as original RoboCop and Total Recall director Paul Verhoeven has chimed in with his takes on both.
Regarding Robocop, Verhoeven took issue with the 2014 movie, which starred Joel Kinnaman – who himself knew his version was far removed from the 1987 original – over its lack of subtleties and nuances, in addition to how the filmmakers tried to develop the central character. “The problem there, I felt, was that he was really aware that he lost all his legs and arms. He...

RoboCop and Total Recall director Paul Verhoeven says he’d make another sci-fi film in the vein of those classics if it were offered. “I haven’t seen it,” he said.
RoboCop, Total Recall and Starship Troopers, released in 1987, 1990 and 1997 respectively, are among the greatest sci-fi films ever made. Darkly, violently satirical and loaded with sly humour, they carry all the manic energy of the director behind them – Dutch filmmaker Paul Verhoeven.
By the millennium, however, the independent studio system that gave Verhoeven the latitude to make those films had gone, and 2000’s Hollow Man – an invisible Kevin Bacon thriller even Verhoeven admitted he was disappointed with – marked the end of his movie-making period in America. After that, Verhoeven made smaller-scale but no less edgy films like Black Book, Elle and the saucy nun drama, Benedetta.

In the 1980s and ’90s, Paul Verhoeven became synonymous with high profile science fiction films that combined cutting social satire with Hollywood spectacle. From his cyborg police saga “RoboCop” to his Arnold Schwarzenegger-led Philip K. Dick adaptation “Total Recall” to his misunderstood fascism satire “Starship Troopers,” the Dutch filmmaker made many of the genre’s most recognizable classics. But in the 21st century, Verhoeven has largely steered clear of genre fare. The director has primarily worked in Europe, helming unclassifiable thrillers such as 2016’s “Elle” and 2021’s “Benedetta” that are more grounded in reality than his past works. (Though anyone who has seen them can attest that the “Basic Instinct” director’s fascination with depicting sex on screen clearly has not faded.)
But as the 85-year-old director prepares to shoot his next project, he revealed that he hasn’t entirely said goodbye to genre films. In a new interview published on Metrograph.

Ensign Sonya Gomez (Lycia Naff) is probably best known to Trekkies as the character who spilled a cup of hot chocolate on Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) in the second season "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Q Who." In the episode's cold open, Ensign Gomez ordered a cup of her preferred beverage from a food replicator, and was careful to say "please." Lieutenant La Forge (LeVar Burton) pointed out that one needn't say "please" and "thank you" to computers. Gomez then, possessed of nervous chatter, began to tell Laforge about how excited she was to be on the Enterprise. As she exited to put her drink down, she bumped into the captain coming the other way, spilling chocolate all over them both.
Ensign Gomez only appeared on "Next Generation" one other time, in "Samaritan Snare," but was given less to do. Regardless, she stood out. Most Trekkies remember Gomez well...

Rick and Morty season 7 episodes are getting too weird to explain. Dead bodies turning into spaghetti, a universe full of vacuum cleaners, and now Morty turning into a kuato are some of the crazy stuff going on in this universe of Rick and Morty. Episode 7, titled Wet Kuat American Summer, which is a parody of one of the most popular sci-fi movies, “Total Recall,” is all about Summer using an attribute slider to upgrade her physical strength, but everything goes wrong when Morty pokes his nose into it.
Spoilers Ahead
How Did Morty Turn Into A Kuato?
Episode 7 kicked off with Summer doing all the chores for Rick in his lab to get the attribute slider for a birthday party where she would flex her skills. As per the deal, Rick handed her the slider, which enhanced Summer’s physical strength, making her a muscular woman. Seeing Summer get the super strength,...

This post contains spoilers for the latest episode of "Rick and Morty."
Season 7 of "Rick and Morty" was overdue for a Summer-centric episode, and last night's "Wet Kuat Amortican Summer" finally gave it to us. The episode starts off as a standard storyline about Summer trying out a new sci-fi gadget to become popular with her classmates, but it almost immediately ditches the high school stuff for something much darker and cooler. When Morty and Summer get into a fight at a party, the two end up infused together, with Summer mostly the same but Morty stuck as a small deformed mutant attached to Summer's stomach. In other words, he's a kuato, a creature named after the deformed mutant character in the 1990 sci-fi flick "Total Recall."
But despite how this all sounds, the episode is not primarily a parody of "Total Recall." As it turns out, kuatos are surprisingly common...

After eight live-action Spider-Man movies, the most recent of which made unbelievable profits, the webhead is well and truly established as an icon of the superhero genre. We all know how things started, with Sam Raimi's 2002 "Spider-Man" giving us our first proper live-action Spidey film. But things could have looked very different if James Cameron's Spider-Man movie ever got made.
There's been a lot written about the director's ill-fated "Spider-Man," which would have been a much more adult, R-rated experience than Raimi's effort. The script was peppered with profanity and featured a love scene between Peter Parker and Mary Jane, who were supposed to be played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Nikki Cox respectively. Cameron was working on the project after the now-shuttered Carolco, which produced multiple blockbusters including Cameron's own "Terminator 2: Judgement Day," acquired the rights to Spider-Man in 1990. Actress Sharon Stone has revealed that back in 2001 when she was suffering from brain hemorrhage, the doctors thought she was faking the whole incident. During her 2001 incident, the actress was diagnosed with 1 per cent chance of survival, which led her to quit Hollywood.
