The Oscars are almost upon us, and the past few weeks have treated us to the shortlists competing in a number of categories, including Best Animated Feature, Best Visual Effects, Best Documentary, and Best Original Score.
With the nominations announcement creeping ever closer at the start of next month, the Academy have now announced a seventy-five-long list of songs that are eligible in the Best Original Song category.
The list features some absolutely stellar songs that have debuted on the big screen this year, including Adele’s impressive Bond theme, Skyfall.
Tom Hooper’s highly anticipated Les Misérables is also in the running with Suddenly, composed specifically for the film, and it should be great to see how it’s received both by audiences and the Academy in the coming weeks.

There are 75 original songs that qualify for the Oscar this year, but really everyone has been waiting to hear about one.
Adele’s title theme to Skyfall surged to #1 on iTunes just days after debuting in October, but some feared the number by her and Paul Epworth would be ruled ineligible for the Oscar because it incorporates elements of the classic 007 theme, which of course is not original.
But the music branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences decided it was not a significant enough problem to boot it from the potential nominees, and included it without...

I mentioned on today's podcast that my three nominees for Best Original Song for the 2013 Critics' Choice Awards were "100 Black Coffins" from Django Unchained, "Skyfall" from Skyfall and "Ladies of Tampa" from Magic Mike. Of my nominees only "Skyfall" made the official list of nominees, but hopefully the Academy will right a couple of wrongs as both "100 Black Coffins" and Matthew McConaughey's "Ladies of Tampa" are among the 75 songs listed as in contention for a nomination at the 2013 Oscars. The Academy just released the following list of which all voting members of the Music Branch will receive a Reminder List of works submitted in the category and a DVD copy of the song clips. Members will be asked to watch the clips and then vote in the order of their preference for not more than five achievements in the category. The five achievements receiving the highest number of votes...

★★☆☆☆ Short Circuit (1986) is a film which anyone old enough to remember first time round, will look back on with nostalgia as a defining sci-fi movie of the 1980s. However viewed now, the family comedy starring Ally Sheedy, Police Academy's Steve Guttenberg and Fisher Stevens, is likely to leave you distinctly underwhelmed. Struck by lightning during a freak storm, experimental military robot Number 5 (voiced by Tim Blaney), is given a new lease of life. Escaping from the high security military compound where he was created, Number 5 is befriended and given a home by the eccentric Stephanie Speck (Sheedy) who believes him to be an alien.

Outfest is bringing some television to its 30th anniversary iteration. The Los Angeles film festival, which announced a line-up that includes "Keep the Lights On," "How to Survive a Plague" and "Struck By Lightning" earlier this month, announced today that it's adding a screening of a never-before-broadcast episode of ABC's comedy "Happy Endings," to be followed by a Q&A with cast members Adam Pally (who plays Max), Casey Wilson (Penny), Stephen Guarino (Derrick), creator and executive producer David Caspe and executive producer Jonathan Groff. The panel and screening will take place on Saturday, July 22 at 1:00pm at the Director’s Guild of America (DGA 1). Max, the character played by Pally on the series, is widely heralded for going against small-screen expectations in terms of depictions of gay characters. His big romantic moment at the end of February's “The St. Valentine’s...

Emma Watson's "Bling Ring" look has already been spied by the paparazzi (nice lower-back tattoo, EmWats!), but the actress took it upon herself to offer fans an extensive peek at her very un-Hermione-like character, the rebellious Nicki.
The new film -- from director Sofia Coppola -- was inspired by the actual Bling Ring, a group of teenagers who robbed the homes of celebrities. Among the offending teens was Alexis Neiers, a reality television star best known for the E! show "Pretty Wild."
Watson tweeted a pic that shows Nicki in full L.A. regalia: pink jumpsuit, UGGs, and tattoos on her hip and arms. The "Harry Potter" actress wrapped shooting the film on Friday, and had previously expressed great joy at making the drama.
Co-starring Kirsten Dunst, Leslie Mann, Israel Broussard and Gavin Rossdale (!), "The Bling Ring" is due out in theaters next year. Click the link in the...

Chris Colfer, also known as the fashion-smart singing sensation Kurt Hummel on Fox’s “Glee” who razzle-dazzled his way to an Emmy nomination, is about to parlay some of his newfound fame onto the silver screen.
Variety snagged the news that Colfer will write and star in a new comedy titled “Struck by Lightning” for producer David Permut, who has shown a knack for teen silliness with “Charlie Bartlett” and “Youth in Revolt.”
There’s no plot details as of yet, but Colfer’s screenplay is said to be in the spirit of recently-departed high school bard John Hughes. Clearly Colfer took “The Breakfast Club” anthem “Don’t You Forget About Me” literally.
Although this is not the plot (yet), we’d hope the story revolves around an awkward teen who becomes a falsetto-voiced superstar and crime-fighting ninja after he is hit by a lightning bolt. After all, young shinobi...

Get ready to gleek out something fierce. Chris Colfer, better known as Kurt on Glee, is set to star in a film he wrote himself. According to Variety, Colfer plans to shoot Struck By Lightning during Glee’s hiatus next summer, with David Permut (Youth In Revolt) handling the directorial duties. Not bad for a 20-year-old! While a studio has yet to sign up to produce, it’s hard to believe someone won’t snap this up fast. “I was very impressed with how sophisticated Colfer’s writing is,” said Permut, comparing the script to a John Hughes movie. “He may be only 20 but he’s an old soul.” Speaking of “old soul,” we’re guessing Ducky will actually get to sing an Otis Redding song in this Pretty In Pink rather than lip sync. "Glee" star Chris Colfer is set to be "Struck by Lightning" when he makes his movie debut in his own comedy. The Emmy-nominated actor wrote the script for the coming-of-age film himself and has teamed up with "Youth in Revolt" producer David Permut to bring the project to the big screen.
And Permut admits he was blown away by the quality of the screenplay, comparing Colfer's talents to that of late director John Hughes. He tells industry paper Daily Variety, "I was very impressed with how sophisticated (Colfer's) writing is. He may be only 20 but he's an old soul."
The movie will be shopped around studios in the New Year and production is scheduled to begin next summer.
Chris Colfer's "Glee" co-star Lea Michele reportedly will also make big screen debut with "New Year's Eve", a follow-up to romantic comedy "Valentine's Day".

Glee star Chris Colfer is only 20 years old, but he's also that show's indisputable breakout star, and therefore has a lot more power in the movie industry than you or I can ever dream of. So whether or not his script for the teen comedy Struck by Lightning is any good-- and let's give him the benefit of the doubt and assume it is-- it will be going into production next summer, with Colfer also on board to star. According to Variety Youth in Revolt's David Perlmut will be producing the film, which is said to be in the spirit of John Hughes movies (though it's worth noting that's what they say about pretty much every teen movie). They're currently looking for directors and other cast members of the film, which will shoot next year during the Glee hiatus. For Colfer's sake I hope his starring role is something...

"Glee" star Chris Colfer will make his feature-film debut in the near future -- in an indie movie that he also wrote.
Colfer will star in "Struck by Lightning," a coming-of-age comedy that's in the early stages of development. David Permut ("Youth in Revolt," "Face/Off") is producing the movie and is in the process of hiring a director. There's no studio or distributor attached yet, Variety reports.
Colfer, an Emmy nominee this year for playing Kurt on "Glee," also wrote the script for "Struck by Lightning," which Permut describes as John Hughes-esque. Few other details are available -- there's no word, for instance, on whether Colfer will get to showcase his singing in the movie.
Prior to "Glee," Colfer's only other credit was a short film called "Russel Fish: The Sausage and Eggs Incident" that played at a couple of festivals. He also did voice work on "Marmaduke.
