Oi there, listen up! Amazon Prime Video’s list of new releases for June 2024 includes another season of its biggest, bloodiest hit.
The Boys season 4 premieres its first three episodes on Thursday, June 13. Based on the trailers, The Boys is really leaning into the political side of its social satire with a presidential election underway and Homelander on trial for the small matter of killing a guy last season. The season will continue to air on Thursdays, culminating with the finale on July 18.
Amazon is really leaning into its sports offerings this month as well. Fans will get to watch the New York Yankees, the WNBA, and the Nwsl several times throughout June. That’s in addition to a couple of sports docs: Power of the Dream on June 18 and Federer: Twelve Final Days on June 20.
But if you’re looking for something even more explosive than Homelander and Roger Federer,...

Under the non de plume John Le Carre, David Cornwall penned a series of best-selling spy novels including “The Spy Who Came in from the Cold,” “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,” ‘The Little Drummer Girl’’ and “The Russia House,” that are cerebral, unadorned, gritty. The antitheist of Ian Fleming’s suave James Bond. In fact, his most popular character George Smiley just blended into the crowd: “Obscurity was his nature, as well as his profession,” Cornwall described him in “A Murder of Quality.” “The byways of espionage are not populated by the brash and colorful adventure of fiction. A man who, like Smiley, had lived and worked for years among his country’s enemies learns only one prayer; that he may never, never be noticed. Assimilation is his highest aim.”
Before his death at the age of 89 in in December, 2020, Cornwall sat down for a rare interview with award-winning documentarian Errol Morris...

In 2016, John le Carré published a memoir called “The Pigeon Tunnel,” which the late spy novelist — who died in late 2020 — claims had been the working title of nearly all his books at some point. For le Carré, the term describes the passage through which naive birds of sport were forced from their nests, only to emerge as targets for marksmen waiting with rifles poised at a hotel in Monte Carlo. That’s just one of several metaphors Le Carré uses to communicate his cynical worldview in a playful portrait from Errol Morris, whose career-long interest in truth and delusion fits his subject so well, the whole film ultimately feels like a bit of a ploy.
For starters, there was no such person as John le Carré, a pseudonym adopted by David Cornwell, an Oxford-educated ex-spy who turned to literature to process the absurdity of England’s so-called “intelligence” industry, which Cornwell slyly dubbed “the Circus.

Errol Morris has a thing for facing down squirmy subjects. For the 2003 Oscar-winning “The Fog of War: Eleven Lessons from the Life of Robert S. McNamara,” he cold-called the former U.S. Defense Secretary for an interview. A decade later, the filmmaker trained his Interrotron on another former Defense Secretary, Donald Rumsfeld, for “The Unknown Known.”
For the AppleTV+ production “The Pigeon Tunnel,” Morris again captured elusive quarry by recording four days of interviews with John le Carré (neé David Cornwell) in fall 2019; they proved to be the acclaimed author’s last. The film serves as a kind of adaptation of le Carré’s own autobiography, which he wrote after biographer Adam Sisman published “John le Carré: The Biography” in 2015.
“It’s not surprising to me that David took a competitive attitude towards it,” said Morris in a phone interview. “In the most direct way imaginable, he decided, ‘Hey, this...

With its list of new releases for July 2023, Prime Video is going to help you stay safe from the oppressive July sun.
Highlighting the Amazon Originals on the TV side this month are two heavy hitters. The first is The Horror of Dolores Roach on July 7. Based on a podcast of the same name, this series could best be described as a modern day Sweeney Todd? Why, you ask? Well you know why. Think about it. Then season 2 of Neil Gaiman adaptation Good Omens premieres on July 28. This season will follow angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and demon Crowley (David Tenant) as they seek to keep the Archangel Gabriel (Jon Hamm) away from both heaven and hell.
There aren’t any Amazon Original movies of note this month and that’s alright as the influx of library titles is more than enough. July 1 sees the arrival of The 40-Year-Old Virgin, No Country for Old Men,...

At last, a video game movie that’s more than just a video game movie.
In theory, “Tetris” — that primitive and highly addictive block-stacking strategy game — doesn’t lend itself to the big-screen treatment any more than Rubik’s Cube or Tic-Tac-Toe might. But Noah Pink has found an ingenious solution to a classic puzzle. The screenwriter realized that there’s more to Tetris than most people knew. Namely, there’s a terrific backstory about how this Soviet-hatched computer software made its way over the Iron Curtain, and telling it could play like a Cold War thriller as three teams of Western rivals race one another to Russia to secure the rights.
In a sense, the video game movie that “Tetris” most resembles is 1984’s “Cloak & Dagger,” which made an Atari cartridge the MacGuffin that all kinds of untrustworthy people want to get their hands on. Here, it’s...

“Escape From Kabul Airport,” a documentary airing on BBC Two in September, will tell the inside story of the 18 days in August 2021, when the U.S. withdrew its troops from Afghanistan, and the subsequent evacuation of thousands of Afghan citizens from Kabul airport after the Taliban seized the city.
The documentary is an Amos production for the BBC, in association with HBO and in collaboration with Arte France. It is produced by Emmy and BAFTA-winning Dan Reed (“Leaving Neverland”) and directed by Jamie Roberts (“Four Hours At The Capitol”).
The film combines never before seen on-the-ground archival footage from the evacuation, alongside interviews with evacuees, eye-witnesses, U.S. Marines and Taliban fighters.
Roberts said: “When the images of the chaotic Kabul airlift flashed across the news I immediately wanted to know more about what this historic moment looked and felt like on the ground, through the eyes of the people who were there.

Michelle Pfeiffer has been dazzling audiences as one of Hollywood’s most recognizable leading ladies for decades. Throughout her illustrious career, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has expressed its adoration for the actress by nominating her eight times at the Golden Globes, including her winning performance in 1990 for “The Fabulous Baker Boys.” Her latest bid is for “French Exit,” a surreal comedy from Sony Pictures Classics that could land Pfeiffer her second Globe and first win in more than three decades.
Pfeiffer faces off against Maria Bakalova (“Borat Subsequent Moviefilm”), Kate Hudson (“Music”), Rosamund Pike (“I Care a Lot”) and Anya Taylor-Joy (“Emma”) for Best Film Comedy/Musical Actress. None of Pfeiffer’s competitors come close to matching the veteran’s eight nominations to date. Pike had two prior bids for “Gone Girl” (2014) and “A Private War” (2018). The following year she was paired with Al Pacino in the blockbuster crime drama “Scarface.” In the nearly four decades since, she has co-starred with some of the biggest names in Hollywood in such hits as “The Witches of Eastwick,” “Married to the Mob,” “Tequila Sunrise,” “The Russia House,” “Batman Returns,” “Dangerous Minds,” “Up Close & Personal,” “One Fine Day” and “What Lies Beneath.”

John le Carré, whose bestselling novels about the chilly world of Cold War espionage were the basis for a long series of popular film and TV adaptations, has died of pneumonia. He was 89.
Le Carré’s literary agency, Curtis Brown, announced his death on Dec. 13 via Twitter. The beloved storyteller, whose real name was David Cornwell, was a favorite among writers and screenwriters for the naturally cinematic touches and propulsive narratives he delivered over a career that spanned a half century and 25 novels, the most recent of which was published in 2019, three days after his 88th birthday.

Sean Connery, one of the truly iconic actors of Hollywood, died overnight in the Bahamas at the age of 90. No cause of death was announced.
The Scottish actor’s career spanned five-decades in which he played a wide range of unforgettable characters, many of them iconic on their own. But he will always be known as the first, best and most recognizable actor to play the British Spy with the license to kill, James Bond. He played Agent 007 in seven movies, beginning with the first James Bond movie Dr. No in 1962.
But Connery was no mere espionage agent, and he certainly wasn’t secret. Connery starred opposite Tippi Hedren in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1964 film Marnie. He stood out in a crowded all-star cast in Murder on the Orient Express from 1974. He escaped Alcatraz in The Rock (1996), defected to the United States in The Hunt for Red October, saved the day...

New Delhi, Oct 31 (Ians) For a man who redefined the spy as a playboy and an action star with his James Bond roles, Sean Connery had once surprised the world declaring he was no great fan of the British superspy.
"I've only read two Bond books, I found Ian Fleming himself much more interesting than his writing," Connery had stated, in an article that The Guardian ran in December 1971.
That was the era when Connery ruled the mindset of Hollywood fans the world over with his back-to-back hits as Agent 007. It was almost a decade since his first bow, "Dr No", created global impact upon release in 1962. By December 1971 Connery had already starred in four other Bond blockbusters that continue to define the original essence of Bond -- "From Russia With Love" (1963), "Goldfinger" (1964), "Thunderball" (1965), and "You Only Live Twice" (1967). The sensational, overlooked film scores from the years 1990 to 1999 that really are well worth digging out...
The movies went through tumultuous and exciting changes in the nineties. Quentin Tarantino exploded onto the scene with Reservoir Dogs, Generation X gave rise to slacker marvels like Clerks, and blockbusters like The Matrix put the awe back into special effects.
However, the 90s was also a sensational decade for film music, gifting us classics including the likes of Jurassic Park, Titanic, Total Recall, Braveheart and countless others. But the sheer quality of these soundtrack treasures shouldn’t overshadow those undervalued hidden gems that demonstrate the extraordinary range and versatility of our finest film composers, ones that may have passed you by. So here’s our selection of those incredible works: ranging from the earworming to the unsettling, the melodic to the chaotic, these are the scores that simply demand your attention.

We have the highlights of what's coming and going from HBO Now and HBO Go in January 2020.
A new year will eventually mean a new HBO with the release of HBO Max. But for now HBO Now and HBO Go continue on and are putting their best foot forward with the HBO new releases for January 2020.
Comedy is the name of the game for the HBO originals in January 2020. Larry David returns as Curb Your Enthusiasm season 10 premieres on January 19. Veep creator Armando Iannucci takes his satirical ways to space with Avenue 5 the same night. The New Pope is...sort of a comedy and arrives on January 13. The Stephen King series The Outsider is very much not a comedy but it will come to HBO on January 12 all the same.

'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.' 2015: Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer. 'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.' movie is a domestic box office bomb: Will it be saved by international filmgoers? Directed by Sherlock Holmes' Guy Ritchie and toplining Man of Steel star Henry Cavill and The Lone Ranger costar Armie Hammer, the Warner Bros. release The Man from U.N.C.L.E. has been a domestic box office disaster, performing about 25 percent below – already quite modest – expectations. (See also: “'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.' Movie: Bigger Box Office Flop Than Expected.”) This past weekend, the $80 million-budget The Man from U.N.C.L.E. collected a meager $13.42 million from 3,638 North American theaters, averaging $3,689 per site. After five days out, the big-screen reboot of the popular 1960s television series starring Robert Vaughn and David McCallum has taken in a mere $16.77 million. For comparison's sake:...

One of the most famous authors in the spy thriller genre is John le Carré. Having published his first novel in 1961, the author has seen many of his works adapted to the big screen, such as The Russia House and The Constant Gardener. Many fans of the author and the adaptations of his work were interested to hear of his 2008 novel being next in line for the big screen. Titled A Most Wanted Man, the film is directed by Anton Corbijn, working from a script by Andrew Bovell. The film stars Rachel McAdams, Robin Wright, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Daniel Bruhl, and Willem Dafoe, and will make its premiere at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. An international trailer has now been released, and can be seen below.

You better watch Titanic, Top Gun and Braveheart while you can, because come 2014, Netflix will remove 80 films and a handful of TV shows from their streaming site.
According to Reddit, on New Year's Day, nearly 40 million streaming Netflix subscribers will no longer be able to watch some of the classic films and TV shows that have been so readily available in the past. Instead, they will have to join the seven million DVD subscribers and order their films to come in the mail.

The heads-up came from an anonymous post on Reddit, in which the user listed every film that is to be removed from instant streaming as of Wednesday, January 1. A Netflix spokesperson told CNN that the company often changes what films will be available for streaming based on licensing contracts made with the studios and filmmakers.

Life is ephemeral. Nothing lasts forever, least of all your favorite streaming movies and TV shows on Netflix. It used to be you could go to third-party websites to find out when movies would be expiring from Netflix’s streaming service, but no more. Now the only place to find that information is on individual listings within Netflix’s own website or apps. How are we to know which films we never got around to watching that we’ll be missing in a few days?
Well, where there’s a will there’s a way. In this case, that way is through the seedy back alley of the Internet known as Reddit, where one user was kind enough to list all the various films and TV shows that will no longer be on Netflix after the first of the year. Here is that very list:

A major downside of VOD services compared with having a vast Blu-ray or DVD library is timing. Services like Netflix, Hulu, etc. have contracts with content providers - contracts that expire usually around the end of a calendar year unless otherwise renewed.
Thus from January 1st, certain films will no longer be available on that service to watch when you want. We've seen Michelle Pfeiffer sing, we've seen her slink around Gotham City, and we've seen her as a drug lord's trophy wife, but now we'll get to see her as a mafia badass.
From "Dangerous Liaisons" to "Dangerous Minds," the Oscar-winning actress gets dangerous yet again in this week's "The Family" alongside Robert De Niro. Pfeiffer's Maggie Blake may look like a sweet little blonde lady, but don't judge a mob boss's wife by her cover -- she'll blow up your convenience store if you make fun of her French.
Pfeiffer has been on both the big and small screen for the last 34 years, but there are still a handful of facts you probably didn't know about her, such as her penchant for oil painting. Check out 20 little-known tidbits below about the actress below.

"I don't like to go down the same road with films, I don't like to repeat myself," director Fred Schepisi told us recently over the phone from Australia. Indeed looking over his filmography, one can't deny the diversity of his work in a career that has spanned more than four decades. From bracing drama ("A Cry In The Dark") to a John Le Carré based thriller ("The Russia House") to comedy ("Roxanne," "I.Q.," "Mr. Baseball"), Schepisi has worked with talent ranging from rising actors that would go on to become worldwide superstars (Will Smith in "Six Degrees Of Separation") to bonafide legends (Paul Newman in "Empire Falls"). And for his latest, "Words And Pictures," which premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival this week, Schepisi is once again trying something different. Starring Clive Owen and Juliette Binoche, the film tells the story of former literary star turned prep school English teacher Jack Marcus,...

Toronto is in the final push of getting things ready for Tiff and it looks like the red carpets will be even starrier, and premieres even bigger than previously thought. With over 80 new films announced today, there won't be a moment to spare this year at the festival, and even more peeks at the upcoming films have arrived. Flying a bit below the radar is "Words And Pictures," pairing up two actors we dig in Clive Owen and Juliette Binoche. The film comes from Fred Schepisi ("The Russia House," "Six Degrees Of Separation," "Roxanne") and it seems right in his familiar wheelhouse, blending comedy and drama. Here's the synopsis: Clive Owen and Juliette Binoche star in this playful comic drama about an English teacher who challenges the school’s art teacher to a "war" between words and pictures — and, in the process, sparks an unlikely romance. Meanwhile, things go period...

Anton Corbijn's adaptation of the John le Carre thriller, "A Most Wanted Man," began principal photography this week in Hamburg. The film stars Philip Seymour Hoffman, Rachel McAdams, Willem Dafoe and Robin Wright. Corbijn ("The American") directs the film, which Australian writer Andrew Bovell ("Lantana") adapted for the screen. "A Most Wanted Man" tells a gripping story of a half-Chechen, half-Russian immigrant who emerges in Hamburg's Islamic community, aiming to find his father's illegitimately-gained fortune. When German and Us security agencies seek to deter his efforts, questions about the morality of the man's intentions loom as tensions reach a boiling point. The adaptation of this novel marks the ninth of John Le Carre's 23 books to reach the screen. Others include "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy," "The Constant Gardener," "The Russia House" and "The Spy...

In the 1980s and 1990s, Australian director Fred Schepisi was something of a big deal. The 73-year-old filmmaker got his start back in Oz with 1976's "The Devil's Playground," made his U.S. debut with the underrated Western "Barbarosa," and went on to make acclaimed, successful pictures like "Roxanne," "A Cry In The Dark," "The Russia House" and "Six Degrees Of Separation," as well as a few that didn't quite connect in the same way, like "I.Q." and "A Fish Called Wanda" semi-sequel "Fierce Creatures." The filmmaker's been relatively quiet in the last ten years, with 2003's Michael/Kirk/Cameron Douglas disaster "It Runs In The Family" and 2005's acclaimed HBO drama "Empire Falls," which featured Paul Newman's final live-action performance, as his only output.

Russell was famed for being experimental and flamboyant with his films which had heavily sexual overtones and often rebelled against the otherwise rigid and subdued tone used by other famed British filmmakers. It earned him the nickname 'The Fellini of the North'.
Russell first came to notice with 1967's "Billion Dollar Brain", the third film in the Michael Caine-led Harry Palmer spy drama series based on Len Deighton's books. Two years later he directed his signature film - an adaptation of Dh Lawrence's "Women In Love".
'Women' scored numerous Oscar nominations and featured the now infamous nude wrestling scene between Oliver Reed and Alan Bates that broke the taboo of full frontal male nudity on camera in a mainstream film.
That lead to numerous films in the 1970's that have since become infamous.

Last night the world lost one of its movie authors when famed British director Ken Russell died peacefully in his sleep, aged 84. Which seems somewhat at odds with his hellraiser public reputation, or his gloriously controversial filmography. Ken Russell never shied away from putting an edge in his films. Films like "The Devils" or even genre fair like "Lair of the White Worm" still make people frown because he didn't just include nudity but, when necessary, would put masturbating nuns in them. Aside from that he was also a very good character actor, as seen in films like "The Russia House". But I hope he will be best known not for the controversy of his films, but for the sheer artistry and vision in...

As the star of two of the most successful film franchises of the ‘80s, Harrison Ford was the obvious choice to take on the role of Jack Ryan for director Phillip Noyce’s Patriot Games, released on Blu-ray last week. Following on from Alec Baldwin’s portrayal of the character in The Hunt For Red October, where Ryan was very much a supporting role to Sean Connery’s Russian submarine captain, producers required a more bankable star to fill Ryan’s boots for a story focussing more on Ryan and his family as he takes on a terrorist splinter group.
Based on Tom Clancy’s international best-seller, Patriot Games follows former CIA analyst Jack Ryan as he travels to London for a vacation with his wife (Anne Archer, Fatal Attraction) and child (Thora Birch, American Beauty). Meeting his family outside Buckingham Palace, Ryan is caught in the middle of a...

The Eye Of The Storm recently won The Age Critics Award at Miff. Director Fred Schepisi spoke with Alice Terlikowski about his return to Australian storytelling, upcoming projects and the industry at large.
Roxanne, The Russia House and Six Degrees Of Separation, to name a few, are all under the belt of Australian director Fred Schepisi but it’s his latest work starring Geoffrey Rush and Judy Davis that holds a particular significance to the Australian industry.
The 71-year-old director told Encore he’s been working on Australian stories for “quite a long time” but has always aimed to strike a balance between work in Hollywood and at home. The Eye Of The Storm is his first Australian film in 22 years, since Evil Angels – based on the story of Lindy Chamberlain.
“My generation grew up on very few Australian films. In most of the cinemas were American films but if...

John le Carré makes a cameo at an MI6 Christmas party, while former Lars von Trier protege Susanne Bier no longer has time for the controversial film-maker
The spy who came in with a cameo
Writer John le Carré gave his blessing to the new film version of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy by appearing in a scene. Readers of this column (and other keen-eyed viewers) may spot him, as I can exclusively reveal that le Carré – real name David Cornwell – makes his screen appearance standing next to a spy who is dressed as Lenin at a party. It is only the second time he has popped up in a work adapted from one of his books, following an appearance in The Little Drummer Girl. The new film, directed by Swede Tomas Alfredson and starring Gary Oldman as George Smiley, will have its world premiere at next month's Venice film festival,...

Well it looks like another John le Carré novel is about to be adapted into a feature film. In 1965, Martin Ritt directed the first film adaptation of a John le Carré novel, The Spy Who Came in from the Cold. In 1966, Sidney Lumet directed The Deadly Affair. In 1969, Frank Pierson directed The Looking Glass War. In 1984, George Roy Hill directed The Little Drummer Girl. In 1990, Fred Schepisi directed The Russia House. In 2001, John Boorman directed The Tailor of Panama. In 2005, Fernando Meirelles directed The Constant Gardener, and just last year it was announced that Peter Morgan and John le Carré were writing a cinematic adaptation of the novel Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.
Now according to THR, director Anton Corbijn (The American) will bring us the ninth adaptation. Corbijn has signed on to direct A Most Wanted Man from a screenplay by Andrew Bovell (Edge of Darkness). The tale is loosely...

In 1980, the Francophile Vladimir Vetrov, a senior Kgb officer disgusted with the direction in which the Soviet Union was going, approached French intelligence offering to provide invaluable information about Soviet spies and the Kgb's penetration of the west. He was given the codename "Farewell", François Mitterrand shared the coup with President Reagan, and Vetrov helped hasten the collapse of the Ussr and brought about his own death.
Farewell is a somewhat fictionalised version of this relatively little-known story, with Emir Kusturica as the reckless, quixotic, idealistic Kgb agent (here renamed Grigoriev) and Guillaume Canet as the French engineer and the reluctant go-between. It is a richly intriguing tale about high intrigue, though at times a trifle uncertain, and comes over as a cross between two John le Carré novels, The Spy Who Came in From the Cold and The Russia House. There's a neat turn by Fred Ward as Ronald Reagan.

Here's a look back at Christmas weekend through the years: 5 Years Ago - 2005 Eight movies entered nationwide release, but King Kong and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe still packed a one-two punch. Kong's second weekend showed some relative weakness by beating Narnia's third weekend by $1.5 million: Kong made $21.3 million (down 58 percent), while Narnia generated $19.8 million (off 38 percent). Fun with Dick and Jane was the biggest new release with $14.4 million, followed by Cheaper by the Dozen 2 at $9.3 million. Memoirs of a Geisha expanded unmemorably to $6.8 million, The Ringer plopped down with $5.2 million, and Munich was unspectacular with $4.2 million (at 532 venues). Three movies had only one day of nationwide play, due to opening on Sunday, Christmas day, and all three were modest: Rumor Has It at $3.5 million, Wolf Creek at $2.8 million and The Producers at $1.6 million. * Weekend Report: 'King Kong' Clings to Christmas...
