Sad news. The iconic Barry Norman has left us, at the age of 83.
Aw, this is really, really sad news. I’m one of the many who grew up in an era where if you wanted to watch somebody talk and enthuse about films on the television, Barry Norman was your man. His Film programmes were a huge part of my growing up (the one he did just after the loss of his father remains etched in my memory), and it makes it extra sad that we have to report he’s died, at the age of 83.
Norman’s body of work is far broader than he was often given credit for. He was a journalist, a novelist, a film critic and television presenter, amongst many other things, and his last book, 2013’s See You In The Morning, was a moving account of the loss of his beloved Diana.

This review contains spoilers.
See related Netflix's Bloodline to end after season 3
To really catch your whodunnit audience off-guard, make the culprit a kid. Twelve-year-old Bobby killed Lucy Beale on EastEnders. One-year-old Maggie shot Mr Burns on The Simpsons. And sixteen-year-old Michael raped Trish Winterman on Broadchurch. He didn’t want to; a bigger boy made him. That’s about the long and short of it.
If I sound withering, forgive me. Broadchurch has done a great many things right this series, but revealing that Michael—groomed by swaggery young shit and serial rapist Leo—attacked Trish wasn’t among them.
Perhaps it’s plausible and rapists routinely recruit and induct apprentices, but Michael’s guilt had a little too much ‘Aha! Didn’t see that coming did you?...

William Devane Respects The Text
By
Alex Simon
Few actors ruled the big and small screen with such vigor during the 1970s as William Devane. Using his classically handsome Irish features to embody parts best described as “Ivy League menace,” Devane hasn’t stopped working since making his film debut in 1967. McCabe & Mrs. Miller, The Missiles of October, Marathon Man, Family Plot, Rolling Thunder, Yanks and Testament are just a few of the classic titles to which Devane brought his unique brand of charisma. The ‘80s saw him dominating the airwaves on the primetime soap Knots Landing as the nefarious Gregory Sumner, with dozens more memorable turns to follow.
Devane lends his gravitas to the new indie thriller We Gotta Get Out of This Place, a nifty neo-noir about a group of Texas teens (Mackenzie Davis, Logan Huffman, Jeremy Allen White) from a dead-end town who find themselves over their...

Former BBC TV presenter complains most films are aimed at teenagers with no interest in dialogue or character
Barry Norman may have left the BBC's Film show 15 years ago, but he's still an influential voice of cinema opinion, as his waspish comments at the Henley literary festival proved over the weekend.
According to the Mail Online, Norman told his audience "Too many films are made for a generation with the attention span of fruit flies ... I heard a depressing fact that films today are made for the 15 year-old to 18 year-old audience, who are there for the quick thrill and the fast effects."
Norman, 80, went on to complain that cinema failed to serve his generation. "You can't make a film on an idea you need a great story but sadly a lot of films today are made on special effects and the 'crash, bang, wallop' effect. We are at an age...

The film critic and author, 80, on perfectionism, being in love with Michelle Pfeiffer, and not bouncing any more
I've probably seen 15,000 films. Since giving up the day job [presenting Film 72 to Film 98] I've seen fewer and fewer – it's a relief to not have to watch so much crap, to be honest. I watch what I want, and a little bit of crap, to get a picture of what's going on.
Most days I feel 35 or 40. Then I step off the train to the platform and realise my limbs have lost all elasticity. I don't bounce any more. Old people just hit the floor.
I'm a perfectionist. I think there were quite a few people I worked with on television who were terrified of me, actually. I didn't have time for cocky kids coming in trying to cut corners on things, so every now and then I'd fly off the handle and frighten the shit...

With his new book See You In The Morning out now, Simon chats to Barry Norman about his writing, his BBC Film programme, writing and more...
There's a bit in his new book, See You In The Morning, where Barry Norman relates his frustration with movie stars being late for interviews, to the point where George Clooney was once kept waiting because Norman had gone off to the loo, so convinced was he that Clooney wouldn't be on time.
Let us tell you: the man practices what he preaches. Three minutes early, the phone rang, and we started talking to the man that so many of us grew up watching, thanks to his near two-decades of work on the Film programme on BBC One.

Film critic describes what happened when the Hollywood star challenged him over who was the taller
The broadcaster and film critic Barry Norman has told of a spat with Mel Gibson over the Hollywood star's height. In his new book See You In The Morning, out later this month, Norman describes meeting Robert De Niro, John Wayne and Braveheart star Gibson .
In the Radio Times, he writes: "There was the occasion at a private dinner in Hollywood when Mel Gibson insisted he was as tall as I was. I disagreed politely on the grounds that I was just over 6ft and he most certainly wasn't.
"But then he grew quite angry about it, until some diplomatic soul suggested we should settle the argument by standing back to back. This we did, and I could feel him going up on tiptoe behind me so that the top of his head would...

Lea tweeted about 'someone very special' on her 26th birthday — and we know who it was! Lea Michele and Cory Monteith's characters may be separated on Glee, but their real-life romance is still going strong! "Someone very special is already making it the best birthday ever," she tweeted Aug. 28, just one hour before turning the big 2-6. "So happy:) See you in the morning! #lasthourbeforeiturn26!!!!" "Someone very special," huh? We think she had to be referring to Cory, with whom she recently made her red carpet debut as a couple at the 2012 Do Something Awards. In fact, Cory even tweeted a hint a few hours later: "happy birthday @msleamichele! hope this was the best one yet :)" Lea was spotted Aug. 29 celebrating her birthday with friends at West Hollywood's Eveleigh, a "genuine neighborhood restaurant and bar" whose menu draws from "old-world European and American country cooking." But Cory's a thoughtful boyfriend,...

For this edition of The Guide, we're going to jump around a little through time and space. Well, if not exactly time and space, then at least relatives and hair. If you really think about it, Hollywood is all about hair -- who has it, who doesn't, who makes good use of his or hers, whose is a disaster (here's looking at you Helena Bonham Carter), whose haircut is in or out, whose color is real and which bald dude is hot. Sometimes I can get confused between the bald dudes, especially now that half the guys with receding or spotty hairlines have decided to just shave their heads instead of waiting for the inevitable. And sometimes, as with the Bridges-Russell continuum, a similar hair shadow (footprint?) leaves almost no way to tell a couple of hairy dudes apart.

Dorothy Bridges, the matriarch of Hollywood's famous Bridges family, has died. She was 93.
The actress/poet, wife of late veteran actor Lloyd Bridges and mother to The Fabulous Baker Boys co-stars Jeff Bridges and Beau Bridges, passed away at her Los Angeles home on 16 February.
Lloyd Bridges, famous for his role in TV show Sea Hunt and comedic turns in Hots Shots and Airplane, met Dorothy at university and they married soon after in 1938. They were together for 60 years until his death in 1998.
The pair studied acting together at the Actors Lab in New York, but moved back to L.A. when Bridges won a contract with Columbia Pictures.
Dorothy was a respected poet, performing for Bob Hope at the Hollywood Bowl and publishing the story of her romance with Bridges in the book You Caught Me Kissing.
She starred in several TV shows and films, appearing opposite her husband in Sea Hunt and with her four times Oscar-nominated son Jeff in See You In The Morning. She was also directed by three-time Emmy winner Beau in The Thanksgiving Promise.
She is survived by her two actor sons, her daughter Lucinda and 11 grandchildren.
