Those who don’t follow professional wrestling may not appreciate just how tough and grueling it is. It isn’t enough to be on the road 200+ days a year, getting dropped on your head or your back every night, dealing with injuries, losing your spot on the roster, and worse. If you’ve seen films like The Iron Claw, The Wrestler, or the old Beyond the Mat documentary, you know that professional wrestling is grind like no other.
But the other aspect that goes underappreciated is how much wrestling relies on acting. If you have any hope of making it big, it isn’t enough to be able to do a tope suicida or Texas Cloverleaf on the way to a 5-star mat classic. You have to be able to act your role, day in and day out. Often, you have to act live, in front of an audience of thousands,...

In what’s being billed as the Saudi leader’s “first interview with a major American news network since 2019,” Fox News announced that Bret Baier will sit down with Mohammed bin Salman for a “no holds barred” conversation.
The pre-taped encounter with the controversial crown prince will cover a range of topics, including the future of the kingdom and its relations with the United States.
The latter is of special interest, given that the Saudis and the Russians agreed this year to an oil price cut that has sent futures prices for Brent crude and West Texas Intermediate, the benchmarks for crude oil, up 13% and 14%, respectively, and diesel prices up 40% since May.
More recently, Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Ct) this week demanded communications and records from PGA Tour and Liv Golf regarding their planned merger. Liv Golf is financed by the Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, which, Blumenthal says,...

While the names Vince McMahon and Hulk Hogan have been suplexed by controversy lately, it’s impossible to ignore how popular they had made the WWE, then WWF, back in the ’80s and ’90s. Enter No Holds Barred, Hulk Hogan’s first starring movie role and the first movie/wrestling crossover event ever! Oh, and did I mention it featured Friday favorite Tom “Tiny” Lister as the mega heel? Damn right. Let’s go!

The professional wrestling industry has always provided a gateway to make the jump into Hollywood for those talented or brave enough to try, with current WWE star Sasha Banks recently becoming a firm fan favorite after showing up in season 2 of The Mandalorian as Koska Reeves. However, not everyone gets to come anywhere close to the levels of success attained by a certain Dwayne Johnson.
For instance, Dave Bautista is an established figure in the industry with a solid filmography under his belt already, but Hulk Hogan was a much bigger name in the squared circle and it would be fair to say No Holds Barred, Suburban Commando and Mr. Nanny didn’t turn him into a movie star.
John Cena, meanwhile, is set to continue his steady rise up the ranks with a banner 2021 that will see him follow in Johnson’s footsteps by joining the Fast and Furious franchise,...

Tommy “Tiny” Lister, the hulkish character actor whose pro-wrestler frame and menacing onscreen disposition highlighted the first two Friday films, Jackie Brown, The Fifth Element, and more than 200 other movies, died Thursday at the age of 62. Welcome to this week’s Major League Wrestling: Fusion review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have Amber Heard tricking the whole damn planet into thinking Johnny Depp abused her, when she’s actually just a lying psychopath. Good luck starring in Lifetime’s murder mystery of the week, darlin’. Okay, we’ve got some good wrestling to get to, so let’s rock.
Match #1: Davey Boy Smith Jr. defeated Simon Gotch – No Holds Barred Match The following is courtesy of mlw.com:
If there ever was a Bulldog’s determination to an individual, Davey certainly has it tonight as he squares off against the veteran Contra member. Davey is the initial aggressor as he downs Gotch to the canvas, but Simon forces him out of the ropeless ring. Davey leaps right back up and lock up again. The feeling out process continues until Davey rolls Gotch down.

"No Holds Barred," episode 4 of No Tomorrow, had Evie and Xavier finally face one of the issues with living every day like it's your last. With someone as free-spirited and open-minded as Xavier, it came as no shock that this guy wouldn't be interested in monogamy during his "final days." This guy isn't going to be tied down to anything or anyone, that's his whole mantra. However, seeing him and Evie deal with this philosophy on relationships seemed to have both of them change their minds. Neither are being honest with each other, and at a certain point, they'll need to be. As comfortable with getting physically naked as they are, they need to learn to get emotionally naked.

Jeremy Irons is in many respects the quintessential English film actor. That’s not simply because of the honeyed diction and innate elegance, but the versatility that has enabled him to travel with ease between romantic leading man, edgy character actor and sinister villain, towards an Indian summer of ever-dependable supporting player.

Another year, another WrestleMania, and once again the WWE have put together their undeniably impressive Showcase of the Immortals, this year in Dallas, Texas.
Kicking off, as it did last year, with a seven man ladder match for the Intercontinental Title, Kevin Owens, Dolph Ziggler, The Miz, Sami Zayn, Stardust, Sin Cara and Zack Ryder put on a great match, delivering plenty of bumps and really setting the seeds for the ongoing Owens / Zayn feud now that both men are established on the main roster.
Next up was Aj Styles’s Mania debut against Chris Jericho, with both men giving their all but not quite creating the synergy that might be expected from two top performers. That said, Styles was impressive and will surely be a lot higher up the bill for Wm Xxxiii next year.

The ever popular New Day (Kofi Kingston, Big E and Xavier Woods) took on the League of Nations (Sheamus,...

Anyone who knows me knows that if a movie stars a professional wrestler, I’m immediately happy as a film fan. Yeah, I’m probably easily impressed, but still, whenever I see my favorite WWE (or otherwise) superstars make the leap to the world of feature films, it makes my inner child giddy. As a kid, it was the reason I first rented They Live, it was the reason I begged my mom mercilessly to see No Holds Barred in theaters, and when I learned in late 1986 that Jesse “The Body” Ventura was going to be co-starring in Predator, the next summer could not get here fast enough.
Even as an adult, I’m always a big fan of seeing wrestlers transition to movies, and that has a lot to do with my soft spot for Gregory Dark’s See No Evil. It features Glenn Jacobs (also known as “Kane...

WWE fan favorite Dean Ambrose loaded up a wagon with weapons during Monday’s “Raw,” stacking up artillery for Sunday’s No Holds Barred Street Fight against Brock Lesnar at “Wrestlemania 32.” And despite his undeniable talent and lunatic ways, Ambrose will need all the baseball bats-wrapped-in-barbed-wire he can get against The Beast. Paul Heyman is officially Brock Lesnar’s advocate, but he’s also the WWE Superstar’s best friend, social media connection and book co-author. It isn’t tricky for the pro wrestling promoter to puff up his boy Brock on TV — Heyman believes everything he says on the mic.

When the stadium has emptied and after venue staff have cleaned up plastic cups and garbage aplenty, literally millions of people will go to bed thinking about WWE’s WrestleMania. The annual pay-per-view draws in more affection for pro wrestling than any other event, it’s the one show each year that has such an incredible atmosphere surrounding it.
Credit where credit is due, WWE have managed to foster incredible excitement for ‘Mania. Yet, it will all wash away should people go away from the event feeling it was lacking even slightly. WrestleMania simply must be a proverbial home run for the company, the rest of the year perhaps depends on it. That’s something the promotion must be wary of, because they have booked themselves into a corner slightly with the show.
It’s expected that Roman Reigns will once again headline ‘Mania, this time opposite Triple H.

Dean Ambrose versus Brock Lesnar is the best match on the WrestleMania 32 card. It combines two of the best workers in the company in a No Holds Barred stipulation that is sure to deliver thrilling action.
Both men are mega over as babyfaces, but for the purposes of this feud, Lesnar will be playing the default heel. His vicious attack on Ambrose at the post-Fastlane Raw made the feud personal. At the same time, Lesnar can justify his actions by saying Ambrose started it with the steel chair attack at Fastlane. It isn’t like The Beast is a full blown heel, he’s more like an unforgiving badass.
In contrast, Ambrose is the Daniel Bryan style babyface, he’s a smaller guy who never knows when he’s beat. His heart and readiness to fight is resonating with the WWE Universe, propelling him to new heights of popularity.

What was largely expected following WWE Fastlane was officially announced during Monday Night Raw, as Dean Ambrose will take on Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 32 in Dallas. WhatCulture previously noted this was the likely scenario moving forward.
Early in the day Monday, WWE cameras (disguised as “fan footage”) shot a scene in the parking lot prior to Raw. Dean Ambrose was shown arriving at the arena, but as we left his car, he was savagely attacked by Lesnar. Lesnar delivered several knee strikes to Ambrose before throwing him a couple of times on the hood and windshield of a limousine. The footage was posted on social media and shown during Raw several times.
During Raw, an in-ring promo segment with Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman was interrupted when Ambrose entered the arena driving an ambulance. He crawled out of the vehicle and slowly made his way to the ring,...

Wrestling’s not all that different from legitimate sports in a number of regards, among them the ‘what could have been’ instances. In sports, it could be one play in a game that, had it gone just a smidge differently, could have swung an entire outcome. For wrestling, it comes down to decisions, both from the office and the workers. Had all hands on deck agreed to go a certain way with a proposed idea, wrestling history as we know it could be much different in many aspects.
WrestleMania lore is loaded with ideas that ended up crumpled and littered on the power broker’s floor. Maybe an injury changed fate. Maybe somebody exercised creative control and killed an idea. Perhaps Vince McMahon himself, going through one of his many abrupt changes of heart, decided to roll in a different direction, as he’s apt to do.

[Originally appeared in the December 2014 issue of Deadly Magazine.] ’Tis the season to be nicer, more forgiving and charitable toward those less fortunate. Keeping these ideals in mind, this month is the perfect opportunity to celebrate my favorite terrible (but so terrible that I can’t help but love it) holiday film of all-time: Santa’s Slay.
Directed by David Steiman (who has yet to helm another film since—poor guy), Santa’s Slay stars Bill Goldberg as a murderous Kris Kringle. He returns to the sleepy town of Hell Township with revenge on his mind, after being forced to be nice to children for a thousand years when he lost a bet with an angel a millennium ago. There’s a bit of Santa-related mythology thrown in, but what makes Santa’s Slay worthwhile is all the over-the-top raucous action and pitch-black humor.
It’s fair to say that the film is about as subtle as a monster truck rally,...

Forget No Holds Barred, Ready To Rumble and The Wrestler. Pretty much every wrestling fan has seen them, for better or for worse, and they’ve penetrated mainstream pop culture through cable reruns and award shows.
However, there’s a whole world of bizarre, terrible and oddly wonderful wrestling films that once seen, cannot be unseen. There’s vanity biopics, Japanese science fiction, and family-friendly dog shenanigans (seriously), but the common thread that stretches between them all is our beloved pseudo-sport.
I’ve included Immortal Dialogue for all of these cinematic treasures, and I want you to know that I didn’t just crib these from an IMDb quotations page. Don’t get me wrong, I totally would have, but most of these movies are so obscure that they don’t even have quotations on their IMDb pages!
You’re welcome.
Proceed at your own risk, friends.

The main event of SummerSlam was announced during Monday night Raw: The Undertaker will face Brock Lesnar on August 23rd at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. It’s a rematch of their memorable encounter at WrestleMania 30 when Lesnar conquered the The Undertaker’s undefeated streak.
It was an announcement that was expected following Sunday’s Battleground main event when Undertaker attacked Lesnar during his WWE Title match against Seth Rollins. Undertaker started Raw, said he was sick of Lesnar (and Paul Heyman) bragging about beating him, so he was going to make them pay. Later in the show, Undertaker stalked Heyman in the ring, which brought out Lesnar.

When Lesnar confronted Undertaker, they got into a massive brawl that saw them fight all around the ringside area while security guards, police officers and the majority of the WWE roster were out there to try to break them up.

There’s still weeks to go until WWE presents their next Pay-Per-View, Battleground on the WWE Network. Events are still offered via more traditional means, which is why they’re still classed as PPV events, but numbers have obviously fallen dramatically since the company started their own subscription-based model last year.
For example, WWE Payback, which took place on May 17th, 2015 managed just 54,000 buys in total. Only 19,000 of those were from the United States, with the remaining 35,000 coming from overseas. The show was headlined by a Fatal-4-Way encounter, as Seth Rollins defended the WWE World Heavyweight Championship against challengers Randy Orton, Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose.
It’s interesting to note that the overall number is down from 2014’s Payback show, which pulled in 67,000 buys. That event was capped off by a bumper No Holds Barred Elimination match, pitting The Shield against Evolution (Randy Orton, Batista and...

Wrestlers have been invading the movies for years. After all, who better to dole out some scripted, Ott grappling than the men who make it their living?
The wrestling industry has everything that Hollywood loves: stars with name recognition, fight scenes, rippling muscles, beautiful women and drama so heightened that it’s in danger of leaving orbit.
While the movies they appear in are often stupid stupid dumb stupid, megastars like Hulk Hogan, Steve Austin, John Cena and Dave Bautista have all achieved a certain level of Hollywood success, in movies like No Holds Barred, The Expendables, The Marine, and Guardians of the Galaxy respectively. Oh, and you may have heard of an actor on the independent movie circuit called Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson.

It’s no secret that wrestling involves a great degree of acting, so it comes as no surprise that a number of wrestlers have attempted to make it in the movie business. Indeed, over the years, wrestlers have moved in to acting on an increasingly regular basis – starting most notably in the late ’80s with Hulk Hogan starring in the likes of Rocky III and No Holds Barred, to later efforts by the likes of Randy Savage, Kevin Nash, and The Rock.
While movies featuring professional wrestlers are generally hit or miss, they have nevertheless produced a fair amount of great moments. More specifically, epic moments. Scenes that are so awesome that you find yourself watching YouTube clips of them for absolutely no reason other than to relive the epicness. And that’s the topic at hand today.

In years gone by, WWE has found it difficult the plug the gap between two of the biggest PPVs of the year.
The Survivor Series and the Royal Rumble are two traditions in WWE that often shape the direction of the following WrestleMania, so how do WWE keep everyone’s interest throughout December?
The December PPV hasn’t been as regular as many think. The first December PPV took place in 1989 when the WWE’s own ‘No Holds Barred’ film staring Hulk Hogan was shown before a series of pre-recorded matches. The next December PPV took place in the form of 1991’s ‘This Tuesday in Texas’ as WWE tried to make Tuesday nights theirs but failed coming just days after that year’s Survivor Series with a botched attempt to sell the same Undertaker vs Hulk Hogan main event.
There would be another four year hiatus until the ‘In Your House’ series started.

In 2000, WWE superstar The Rock took some time off from wrestling to film a small role in The Mummy Returns. The success of that movie eventually led to The Rock leaving WWE for the superstardom of Hollywood as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, turning from wrestling champion to box office champion.
WWE owner Vince McMahon saw The Rock’s Hollywood success as an opportunity to expand his pro wrestling empire. He established what would later be named WWE Studios, an in-house production studio that would make feature films starring WWE wrestlers.
What McMahon didn’t bank on is that few WWE wrestlers have the crossover appeal of The Rock. After all, McMahon already unsuccessfully attempted to turn 1980s wrestling superstar Hulk Hogan into a movie star with the 1989 film No Holds Barred.

Back in the Attitude Era, Stone Cold Steve Austin and Vince McMahon would have settled their differences in the ring. However in 2014, things are going to be done slightly different.
The Texas Rattlesnake welcomes his greatest nemesis onto The Steve Austin Show podcast which will be aired on the WWE Network immediately following next week’s Raw on December 1.
Austin releases two podcasts per week. One family friendly version on Tuesdays and The Steve Austin Show ‘Unleashed’ on Thursdays. As you would expect, a meeting with McMahon will be one of the ‘Unleashed’ variety.
The two men who contested the main rivalry of wrestling’s biggest period certainly have a lot to talk about and it promises to be a sensational showdown. As fans, all we can hope for is WWE doesn’t let their own agendas get in the way and no stone is left unturned.

Pro wrestling is, and should be, wacky. It’s a live action puppet show that kids and adults alike can go to so they can cheer and boo their hearts out. Theater for all ages
Just look at the above photo: There are likely few wrestling-related images in history evoke “live action puppet show” like this. It appears to be “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan (in is King Duggan guise) visiting Hershey Park…where he’s greeted by anthropomorphic chocolate and what I’d hope is some kind of tour guide in…what is that? Is it an elf costume? A chocolate-making elf? But it’s a pro wrestler who’s best known as a living, breathing cartoon character being flanked by costumed confectionaries and, well, it actually looks kind of normal.

It may be a little boring to say this, but I find that I like WWE more when they get down to the business of actual wrestling. I’d argue that this is what should be happening on a pay-per-view anyway and yes the storyline has to be present of course but the actual fighting in the match should have more importance than the drama of the event. This is why I found myself enjoying WWE Payback 2014 because it focused on actual fighting for the most part, though there was the Daniel Bryan segment but this was just a reason to get him at the event in some form.
Starting off WWE Payback 2014 with a Cesaro match is a good idea because he normally brings quality. Although Sheamus isn’t the most technical wrestler the WWE has got the match still had good chemistry. Putting Cesaro’s style against Sheamus...

Many people tend to think that being a pro wrestler and being an actor are two very similar professions. Well, that couldn’t be any further from the truth. It is true that there are some aspects of wrestling that can be carried over into acting, but in-ring success doesn’t always translate to the big screen. There are few exceptions to that rule, however, with the most obvious one being The Rock. After hanging up his boots in 2003 to pursue an acting career, Rock went from having a brief cameo in “The Mummy 2″ as The Scorpion King to being featured in his own blockbuster film “Hercules” over a decade later.
Not all former main event players have bode well in Hollywood, though. Hulk Hogan is the perfect example. Hogan is easily one of the most influential figures in pro wrestling history, giving birth to Hulkamania in the...

SummerSlam is mere days away and all eyes are on the main event billed as “The biggest fight of the Summer.” John Cena defends his WWE World Heavyweight Championship against one of the most talked about wrestlers of 2014, Brock Lesnar. No doubt about it, Brock is a draw. His larger than life presence, his genuine intensity, his extremely physical style and of course, his mouthpiece the absolutely brilliant Paul Heyman, all combine to create a can’t miss Superstar. When Brock Lesnar shows up the world pays attention. And he’s the man that WWE desperately needs.
With underwhelming subscription numbers, the WWE Network has so far been a financial misfire for WWE. Failing to break even on their most ambitious project ever, the WWE has brought in the man guaranteed to put butts in the seats. This Sunday, the man who conquered the Streak looks to conquer the face of the WWE.

As we near WWE's Biggest Party of the Summer, let's take a look back at the 1989 edition's questionable main-eventer.
SummerSlam is coming up this Sunday and the big match involves Seth Rollins yet again trying to take the WWE Universal Championship from "The Beast Incarnate" Brock Lesnar. These days, Brock Lesnar is treated as the ultimate end boss of WWE, but it wasn't always like that. Prior to breaking the Undertaker's streak and demolishing John Cena, Lesnar had a rather strange role in the company. He was a special attraction who only appeared a handful of times, but was ruined by some high-profile losses. His first match back to the company was a loss to Cena and then he had a big loss to Triple H at WrestleMania. It took a while for WWE to figure out what to do with him.

Summerslam’s rich tradition as one of WWE’s premiere annual shows continues in just weeks, as the company promotes its 27th annual blockbuster event.
Not all WWE plans have come to fruition, others did and would result in classic matches with unbelievable back stories or financial implications. From unbeaten superstars, to insane payoffs, to matches that could have been, Summerslam has put a unique thumbprint on wrestling history both inside and outside of the ring. After taking the event throughout three countries, the show has developed into a regular west-coast attraction, as the WWE has made the Staples Center in Los Angeles the permanent fixture for the show since 2009.
Even after 26 years, Summerslam remains one of the biggest pay-per-view shows of the year, and has been a launching pad and career highlight for the likes of Brock Lesnar, Davey Boy Smith, and many others. The show also...
