As years go, 2016 has been a rough one. The movie that’s helping me get through it more than any other right now is Beyond the Gates.
[Warning: This article contains minor spoilers for those who haven’t seen Beyond the Gates.]
This is the year that has claimed a number of brilliant and legendary artists. The year of more devastating terror attacks, of police shootings, and of Brexit. Like it or not, this is also the year that saw the election of a new president who has already been a more polarizing figure than any in recent memory. Reports of hate crimes are on the rise. America is irrevocably divided. This year has sucked, is what I’m saying. But Beyond the Gates gives me hope. Beyond the Gates is the movie the country needs right now.

Since any New York City cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.

A Paul Schrader retrospective is held this weekend, with the likes of Mishima and American Gigolo screening.
“Trouble Every Day: Halloween at Metrograph” brings several titles, including Claire Denis‘ new classic.
Arthur Penn‘s Night Moves and Roger Corman‘s Masque of Red Death screen on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

As the golden age of high-def horror continues, we aren’t just getting bells-and-whistles Blu-rays of films we never expected to receive such treatment—titles like The Mutilator and Squirm—but also of films some of us barely new existed. American Horror Project Vol. 1, the new Blu-ray box set from Arrow Video, collects three such films: low-budget independent horror movies from the 1970s that have either been forgotten or are in danger of being lost forever.
In attempting to find obscure titles that are still in good enough condition to be restored in high-def, the curators of American Horror Project Vol. 1 (among them Stephen Thrower, author of Nightmare USA, as well as books on both Lucio Fulci and Jess Franco) could easily have found esoteric films that fit the criteria but were, for lack of a more diplomatic way of saying it, better off staying lost. But that couldn’t be further from the case.

No matter how many times I go into a Bruno Mattei movie thinking it will be the one that stands out and justifies his long and prolific directing career, I always come away disappointed. It’s never enough to give up on him completely, as his work consistently achieves a kind of trashy delirium in its best moments to compel me to keep seeking his work out. So while 1983’s Women’s Prison Massacre—now out on Blu-ray from Scream Factory—is far from being Bruno Mattei’s undiscovered masterpiece, there’s enough violent weirdness in store that I’m sure I’ll be more than willing to check out whatever the next Mattei film is to cross my path. Even if it is against my better judgment.
Things start well enough in Women’s Prison Massacre (aka Emanuelle Escapes from Hell), which begins with an expressionistic sequence featuring three...

When you think of a slasher film, images of summer camp and college campuses might dance in your head, but in her first feature film, B.C. Butcher, Kansas Bowling uniquely sets a slasher story in prehistoric times. With Troma set to release B.C. Butcher next year, we caught up with Kansas to discuss making her first movie at the age of seventeen, shooting on 16mm, and much more.
Thanks for taking the time to converse with us, Kansas. Your debut feature film, B.C. Butcher, is a slasher movie set in the prehistoric era. How did you come up with this unique plot?
Kansas Bowling: Thank you so much for showing interest in my film! My friend Kenzie Givens and I came up with the idea when we were in high school. I was 15. It seemed like something easy to do on a tiny budget and it was something that had never been done before!

Corin Hardy's new horror film "The Hallow" premiered to solid reviews at this year's Sundance Film Festival and is now slated for release via VOD and in limited theaters on Nov. 5th and 6th, respectively. Last week the director hopped on the phone with me to discuss his Edgar Wright-supported shocker, which sees a young family being terrorized by a race of humanoid creatures at their new country home in Ireland. The film surprised me with its mixture of horror theatrics, social commentary (deforestation) and real heart -- not to mention a moment that's certain to make anyone who harbors a fear of their optometrist squirm in their seats. Read the full interview below; I've bolded the most essential highlights for speed-readers. In addition, you can check out a brand-new, HitFix-exclusive motion poster for the film above and below. HitFix: There's a layer of social commentary to this that I wasn't expecting,...

HitFix's Ultimate Horror Movie Poll, which highlights the 100 greatest horror films of all time as voted on by over 100 genre filmmakers and experts, not only showcased the enduring power of No. 1 finisher "The Exorcist," it also cemented the status of the '70s and '80s as a Golden Age of horror (films released during those decades took up nearly half of available slots). The '70s and '80s, incidentally, saw the artistic rise and mainstream breakthroughs of both Wes Craven and David Cronenberg, horror icons who placed more films in the Top 100 than any other director (four titles each). Meanwhile, the list revealed one undeniably bleak statistic: only one movie in the Top 100 was directed by a woman. For me, the most gratifying moment of our Ultimate Horror Poll came when compiling the data was finally over, and I could take a step back and fully appreciate, as a reader,...

Shot in 1971, released in 1972, and almost immediately forgotten, Amos Sefer's An American Hippie in Israel was a cult classic just waiting for a rebirth when the film was found by Grindhouse Releasing co-founder, Bob Murawski. Murawski is best known outside of the cult film world as an Academy Award winning editor (The Hurt Locker), but his apparent passion is cultivating a new crowd for lost classics like this film. Through the creation of Grindhouse Releasing with the late Sage Stallone, Murawski has helped to put films like this, Lucio Fulci's The Beyond, and the unique, indiosyncratic oeuvre of Duke Mitchell (Massacre Mafia Style, Gone with the Pope) back on cinema screens where they belong for nearly 20 years. An American Hippie in Israel is...

Those groovy exploitation dealers at Grindhouse Releasing are finally releasing Duke Mitchell’s Gone With The Pope. I have been waiting to see this film for some time and missed the only theatrical showing in St. Louis because it was shown at a different theater on the same nights I did a Late Nite Grindhouse show 5 years ago. This is awesome news for fans coupled with the release of Duke Mitchell’s later film, Massacre Mafia Style, hitting Blu-Ray later this month.
Trailer From Grindhouse Releasing’s website:
Lost for over 30 years, Gone With The Pope stars famed nightclub performer Duke Mitchell as Paul, a paroled gangster with an unholy scheme: to kidnap the Pope and charge “a dollar from every Catholic in the world” as the ransom.
Shot in 1975, Gone With The Pope was unfinished at the time of Duke Mitchell’s death in 1981. Sage Stallone and Bob Murawski...

Feburary’s Late Nite Grindhouse show was originally going to be Duke Mitchell’s Massacre Mafia Style. Unfortunately, there was a scheduling conflict with the only 35mm print of that film. Therefore, we have had to book another title. Massacre Mafia Style will show at a later date but I feel extremely lucky to bring you guys the restored version of Jess Franco’s Vampyros Lesbos. If that title sounds saucy, it’s because it is. Nudity, sex and blood will be shown on the big screen at the Hi-Pointe next weekend and you should join us!
Vampyros Lesbos
1971 / dir. Jess Franco / Digital
From Jess Franco, the filmmaker The Vatican called “the most dangerous director in the world”, comes the most celebrated movie of his legendary career: Stunning Soledad Miranda stars as a vixen vampire who lures women to a Mediterranean island to satisfy her insatiable lust for female flesh and blood.
