There’s never a great time to learn that the corporate entity producing your TV show is calling it quits. For the folks behind Quibi’s Swimming with Sharks, however, the timing of the streamer’s demise was particularly less than ideal.
“We actually learned about the platform officially ending on like the third-to-last day (of shooting),” Sharks showrunner Kathleen Robertson tells Den of Geek. “I found out while at the monitor watching (the performers) act. I literally got an alert and it was from Deadline saying like ‘Quibi is no longer.’”
Quibi, the now-legendary icon of streaming era hubris, launched on April 6, 2020 with the working theory that audiences preferred their content in “quick bites” (hence: “quibi”). After audiences resoundingly responded with a firm “no thanks”, Quibi closed its doors on Dec. 1, 2020, leaving dozens of original TV series and movies without a home. That’s when The Roku Channel swooped...

Backstabbing. Ruthless. Two-faced. Revenge.
Those words appear in a towering font on the poster for the 1994 film “Swimming With Sharks,” behind an image of (now disgraced) actor Kevin Spacey screaming directly into the face of his co-star, Frank Whaley. The film gave audiences an unflinching look at Hollywood’s workplace culture — as it was then, before current efforts to eradicate toxic and inexcusable behavior.
Verbal and physical abuse, staplers and phones hurled at employees, 20-hour workdays, sexual harassment and rampant degradation all play out in the film, which was reportedly based on writer-director George Huang’s experiences under producers Joel Silver and Scott Rudin. “Swimming With Sharks” has become a touchstone for industry survivors, and Roku will unveil a TV series adaptation of the film on April 15.
In the nearly two decades since it was released, a subgenre has sprung up surrounding these backlot stories, especially in the post-#MeToo era.

When someone has just returned to this mortal plane after scaling Mt. Everest, it is perhaps premature to ask them which vast rock they would like to climb next. Yet that’s exactly what we feel obliged to do following news over the weekend that Steven Spielberg—Hollywood’s own veritable Edmund Hillary—is done with musicals after West Side Story.
The revelation came via Variety, which reported about Spielberg attending the PGA Awards Breakfast on Saturday. There, the director and producer had nothing but lovely things to say about his experience of adapting West Side Story to the screen. His efforts have resulted in the musical receiving some of the best reviews in Spielberg’s 21st century career, as well as netting him his eighth nomination for Best Director at the Academy Awards. Nevertheless, Spielberg took the opportunity to say that he was done directing musicals after his first...

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
Arab Blues (Manele Labidi)
The original French-language title of Arab Bles is Un divan à Tunis, and true to the echo of Chantal Akerman’s psychotherapeutic meet-cute A Couch in New York, Manele Labidi’s debut feature is the frothy tale of an analyst coming to terms with her own sense of dislocation, while tending to the many seriocomic needs of her flock. In this case, the psychoanalyst is Selma (Golshifteh Farahani), who leaves Paris and returns to her family’s apartment building in Tunisia, where a neighbor looks at her poster of Sigmund Freud and asks her: Who is he, your father? – Mark A. (full review)

The film stars Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler as Tony and Maria, and will receive a theatrical premiere on December 10th, 2021, after being delayed for a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The trailer harkens back to the iconic opening sequence from the 1961 film adaptation, with shots of the Manhattan buildings and territories where the Jets and the Sharks lurk. Many of the shots and dance numbers are also recognizable, including the school dance sequence,...

For many years, sharks—the creatures of water—were misunderstood by society. There is no doubt that cinema and television contributed to said fear of the water and “blood-wanting monsters.” Sharks, however, are not all that. There are many adventurers; people brave enough to explore these animals' natural environment and help us understand that the overwhelming fear we have is unnecessary. One of them is Valerie Taylor. In Playing with Sharks, which premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, Sally Aitken showcases Taylor's remarkable life and ends this documentary with a touching finale.
Valerie Taylor, a remarkable scuba diver, started spearfishing in the ’60s. She was one of the few women who took part in this activity. One could always notice her. Taylor always wore a pink or a red suit; a color that was not accidental. It was to commemorate the legendary Jacques Cousteau and his ever-present red cap. She...

Joel McHale’s “Card Sharks” was no guppy on Sunday, when ABC was first place in the key demo’s ratings. Of course, it helped a great deal that there was no football competition. Leading in to “Card Sharks,” Jimmy Kimmel’s “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” also grew week to week. The CW’s “Batwoman” added more eyeballs to the previous Sunday’s tally, though it stayed steady in the adults 18-49 demographic. Sunday was the NFL’s off week between the conference championship games and the Super Bowl, which airs on CBS. The setting for Super Bowl Lv will be Tampa Bay, Fla.’s Raymond James Stadium, home to the NFC Champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It’s the first time a Super Bowl team will play the big game in its own stadium. The NFL is expecting 22,000 fans to attend Sunday’s game. Of them, 7,500 are vaccinated healthcare workers.

Sharks have been lurking in the depths of our cultural consciousness for decades now. From the fear that Jaws instilled in audiences in 1975 to the endless consumption of bogus Shark Week docufiction that Discovery Channel peddled, there has been a sense of terror around these unique creatures that few have tried to truly dissipate.
To look at Valerie Taylor’s best known film works, including Jaws and Blue Water, White Death, one might believe the diver and photographer to be one such perpetrator of these myths. But Sally Aitken’s documentary Playing With Sharks offers an in-depth look at the way Taylor (and her husband Ron) dedicated her life to showcasing the beauty of the ocean’s most misunderstood creatures.
As Taylor herself jokes, she often appeared as something of a Bond girl through the lens of her husband’s cameras and the perspective of the audience that witnessed their documentaries.
