Colin Farrell has been a standout in the DC universe, captivating audiences with his gritty portrayal of Oswald “Oz” Cobb, aka The Penguin, in The Batman (2022) and the acclaimed HBO spin-off series The Penguin (2024). Sgt. Rock, DC’s superhero flick to team Luca Guadagnino and The Penguin‘s Colin Farrell, has halted production plans, sources have confirmed to Deadline.
While the film was supposed to enter production in the coming months, we’re now told it’ll look to shoot next summer. Studio insiders said that ultimately, shooting this summer was untenable, as the team would have had to rush through prep to hit the right weather conditions at the right time. The film is being shot primarily on location in the U.K. and shooting exteriors in the dead of winter would not have been optimal conditions for cast, crew and equipment.
The Sgt. Rock news comes as a shock as the film was greenlit months ago with a $65 million budget and plan to shoot this August. Sources close to the project say Guadagnino was scouting locations last week and that the studio...

Ezra Miller’s The Flash felt like a suppressed memory because of the controversies that plagued the franchise, as well as the long delay it endured. It should have been a highly anticipated movie because of the star-studded cast and the surprise cameos, but perhaps no amount of superhero legacy can fix a terrible script.
Despite the horrible experience that fans tolerated at the cinema, one thing it gave us was the unexpected duality of Ben Affleck’s Batman. We’ve seen several portrayals of the famed Caped Crusader from different actors, but for this one, Affleck gave us range.

"Batman: The Animated Series" is beloved for how accurately it adapted the "Batman" comics. Many consider the series to be the definitive depiction of Gotham City. Yet "Batman" also colored in the margins, where the creators left their own thumbprints.
The series didn't only adapt existing Batman comics and characters. The "Batman" team also introduced a handful of original characters, spicing up the stories they could tell. Some of these original characters were such successes that the comics started adapting them from the show.
Take Gotham police officer Renee Montoya, one of Commissioner Gordon's (Bob Hastings) inner circle. Or Nora Fries, terminally ill wife of the villainous Mr. Freeze. Nora's admittedly more of a plot device, but her presence casts a cloud over Freeze and is the foundation of his brilliant recharacterization.
Some of the other original characters were more sinister. The many illustrious villains of "Batman: The Animated Series...

Have you ever wanted to be the Dark Knight himself? Fighting crime, bringing justice, and saving Gotham? Then you are in luck because the Batman: Arkham franchise will present you with that exact experience on a silver platter.
Christopher Nolan gave us the best Batman trilogy since Tim Burton made Michael Keaton wear that stiff cowl in the original 1989 Batman films. Nolan’s movies were so influential that only one Arkham game has successfully captured the pure essence of it. Of course, we are talking about Batman: Arkham Knight. Let’s delve deeper into this.
Nolan’s trilogy made Batman more human and vulnerable
Batman: Arkham Knight is truly a masterpiece in the series. The game made by Rocksteady Studios is the fourth installment in the franchise, and it was released worldwide back in June of 2015. Joseph Kosinski is headed to Miami. The filmmaker behind the $1.49 billion hit Top Gun: Maverick is attached to direct a Miami Vice movie for Universal, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.
Nightcrawler filmmaker Dan Gilroy is penning the script, from an earlier draft by Top Gun: Maverick scribe Eric Warren Singer, who had to move on to commitments on Amazon MGM Studios’ Best of Enemies, starring Christian Bale and Bradley Cooper. The Batman producer Dylan Clark is producing through Dylan Clark Productions and Kosinski producing through Monolith.
Miami Vice began life as the Anthony Yerkovich-created TV series starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as two undercover Miami police officers known for their love of pastel suits. (“The ambition of the show was to break the form of everything that had come before,” executive producer Michael Mann told THR last year of the series, which ran from 1984-90 on NBC.

"Batman: The Animated Series" was produced to capitalize on the success of the Tim Burton "Batman" films. Both the films and cartoon played big roles in bringing a darker Batman to the wider public, the kind that may not have bothered picking up a copy of Frank Miller's comic masterpiece "The Dark Knight Returns."
"Batman: The Animated Series" is widely considered to be the superlative take on the Dark Knight and his rogues gallery. It helps that the series starred several villains never before adapted out of the comics. The pilot episode, "On Leather Wings," featured Batman fighting the monstrous Man-Bat. The 1960s "Batman" series tried and failed to include Harvey "Two-Face" Dent, but "The Animated Series" had him, gruesome origin and all. As the years go by, we continue to look back on some of Hollywood's biggest franchises only to see that they've gotten bigger over time. There are plenty of them too: The Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Jurassic Park movies, the countless DC films (including the Batman series alone), Terminator and so many more. And one of the most enduring of them all is Star Wars.
That franchise in particular features one of the most committed fanbases of all, and it's no surprise given how vast the world of Star Wars is and all of the legendary characters it has produced. That's even more true now that the saga's future reaches across film and television, with multiple beloved characters headlining their own projects in recent years.
As Lucasfilm brought audiences together at Star Wars Celebration Japan, a major announcement revealed that another significant figure in the lore is set to headline their own series.

1989's "Batman" made Tim Burton a box office hero, exposed mass audiences to a truly dark interpretation of the Dark Knight, and ensured Joker actor Jack Nicholson never ran out of money for the rest of his life. The movie was a major success, changing how Hollywood marketed blockbuster movies going forward and influencing every single superhero movie that came in its wake. Burton himself is a big part of why the movie worked as well as it did, holding fast to his artistic vision for the character even as Warner Bros. tried to steer him away from it at multiple turns. But we also wouldn't have that vision without Sam Hamm and Warren Skaaren's script, which contains some of the most memorable lines in superhero movie history, from Joker's "Where does he get those wonderful toys?" to Michael Keaton's legendary "I'm Batman."

The DC Extended Universe ended in 2023 with the sight of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom's Orm eating a cockroach. After a disastrous year for the brand, it almost seemed fitting for it to conclude on such a bum note, but it wasn't all bad for the Dceu.
Sure, it was a rocky ride, and there were perhaps more misses than hits over the years, but it would be wrong to write this franchise off as a total disaster. A few of these titles were even great comic book movies, and it's those that the Dcu will need to compete with.
Ahead of Superman's release in theaters this July, we're ranking each of the Dceu movies from best to worst. Remember, this is only one person's opinion, and you're likely to have a very different take; we'd love to hear those in the comments section.

The entertainment industry is always changing, but one way it's stayed the same throughout the years is with moviegoers complaining about casting choices. Even before we had Twitter or Facebook as outlets for our anger, actors were receiving backlash for taking on roles that were deemed unfitting, miscast, or seemingly impossible for them to play. Bu time and time again, undeniably great actors prove critics and detractors wrong.
Take, for instance, the recently-confirmed John, Paul, George, and Ringo in Sam Mendes' four-part Beatles biopic, hitting theaters in spring 2028. The decision to cast several "white boys of the month" like Paul Mescal and Joseph Quinn as the iconic musicians has some skeptics questioning if they'll be able to pull it off. For now, movie lovers will have to wait three years to see if that decision pays off, but in the meantime, let's take a look back at some casting choices from the past that,...

Rocksteady Studios’ Batman: Arkham Knight is considered by many as the best game in the entire Arkham franchise, and while some people have certain sentiments attached to it, the game is not exactly the best per se.
Although there are many factors that have made Arkham Knight the sort of disaster that it is right now, one of those elements is truly the most annoying one. Of course, we are talking about the main antagonist in the game, the Arkham Knight himself. Let’s delve deeper into this and find out more.
Batman: Arkham Knight could have been the best game in the entire quadrilogy
Batman: Arkham Knight is the fourth installment in Rocksteady’s Batman franchise, and although the game sort of blesses the players with Batman’s most esteemed Batmobile, the developers really fumbled with the antagonist on this one. According to many, even the story of the...

Ranking Every Live-Action Batman Actor By Box Office Success (Photo Credit – Netflix)
Over the years, Gotham’s favorite brooding billionaire, aka Batman, has been played by everyone from a Twilight vampire to an American Psycho, and every version brought its own cape, growl, and gadgets to the big screen. With Batmobiles revving since 1989 and fans still lining up like it’s Joker season, Batman remains one of Hollywood’s most bankable masked vigilantes.
But forget fan polls and online debates, today, we’re letting cold, hard cash do the talking. From nipple suits to noir vibes, we rank every Batman actor based on their box office muscle. Who’s Gotham’s real moneymaker? Is Christian Bale still the box office Bruce Wayne to beat, or did Robert Pattinson sneak in with his eyeliner and vengeance? Grab your grappling hook and calculator, because it’s time to see which Caped Crusader...

If you're a Batman fan (or even if you aren't), you must've heard of Christopher Nolan's "Dark Knight" Trilogy. Led by Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne, these three movies — "Batman Begins," "The Dark Knight," and "The Dark Knight Rises" — have raised the bar for every Batman movie made since. But are there truly only three Dark Knight movies?
The 2008 animated feature "Batman: Gotham Knight" was released as a tie-in to "The Dark Knight." Warner Bros. sold the film as a prequel to their new blockbuster, set between "Batman Begins" and "The Dark Knight."
"Gotham Knight" is not a single-feature, but an anthology of six shorts, each one with a different director and writer. The six shorts lead into each other, forming a narrative thread but still an episodic one. The shorts, which offer treats for both Batman and anime fans,...

Imagine Christian Bale as the tormented Jedi who falls to the dark side, or Leonardo DiCaprio donning the robes of Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars. According to an old rumor from the early 2000s, both Oscar-winning actors were seriously considered to play young Jedi who would eventually become Darth Vader.
In the early 2000s, the galaxy far, far away nearly had a different Chosen One. Long before Hayden Christensen became the face of Anakin Skywalker, the Batman star Christian Bale was widely rumored to be George Lucas’ top pick for the iconic role in the Star Wars prequel trilogy.

Back in 2000, as Lucasfilm prepared to cast the central figure of its upcoming Star Wars movie, Episode II— Attack of the Clones, speculation swirled about which rising star would land the pivotal role.

If you look at a lot of the best films in the superhero genre, a common denominator is Batman. The Caped Crusader's 80+ year legacy makes him one of the comic book heroes most open for interpretation. Different filmmakers have produced widely different, yet equally excellent, Batman movies. 1966's "Batman: The Movie" is a camp classic. "Batman Returns" is a gothic German Expressionist melodrama only Tim Burton could have made. Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight" and Matt Reeves' "The Batman" are both fantastic crime dramas with big ideas most superhero movies don't even reach for.
But it'd be a big mistake to leave animation out of this conversation. "Batman: The Animated Series" is generally considered the finest Batman adaptation ever, proof positive the Dark Knight can excel on film no matter the medium. There are also many more animated Batman movies than live-action ones at this point. Many of them...

Perhaps, it’s time to take out your tissues over your black capes, because Gotham might be losing another Batman. Yep, it’s looking real gloomy, because we’ve already been facing the dreadful delay situation with Robert Pattinson’s The Batman 2. And now, reports suggest that his broody eyes and emo eyeliner might be facing the axe.
And who warned us about this, ages ago? Zack Snyder fans, of course! They’ve been waving red flags louder than a Bat-Signal. Now, James Gunn is reportedly scouting for his own version of the Dark Knight for the rebooted DC Universe—and things aren’t looking good for Robert Pattinson’s Batman.

Everyone knows Batman's origin story. Let's see if we can condense it into a few simple sentence fragments, the way that Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely's "All-Star Superman" did for its lead hero.
Rich couple. Mugging gone wrong. Orphaned son. A Dark Knight.
People often complain that Batman movies put too much focus on the death of his parents. But while Thomas and Martha Wayne are (almost) always doomed as Bruce's origin story, different films offer different interpretations of it.
Christopher Nolan's "Batman Begins" wasn't the first film to show the Wayne murders, but it was the first to show how Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) moved on from that tragedy to become Batman. The film bases its first act on Dennis O'Neil and Dick Giordano's 1989 comic, "The Man Who Falls," showing Bruce traveling the world and learning...

Top Christopher Nolan movies at Box Office (Photo Credit – Instagram)
With Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan not only tackled complex themes but also achieved massive box-office success, proving that you can make an emotionally charged, intellectual film and still rake in the big bucks. The film broke records and left audiences in awe, but interestingly, it’s not even Nolan’s highest-grossing movie to date!
That’s right, despite its impressive earnings, Oppenheimer takes a backseat to a few other Nolan flicks. The filmmaker has been on a roll for decades, pushing the limits of what a summer blockbuster can be while packing in deep philosophical musings. From time manipulation to psychological twists, Nolan’s movies have become synonymous with big ideas and even bigger paydays. So, let’s dive into his top five highest-grossing films and see how the man has cracked the code for success.

Prior to the 2000s’ live-action superhero boom, the ’90s marked a significant shift for this genre, as both DC and Marvel were on a roll with gems like Batman: The Animated Series and X-Men: The Animated Series. But amidst the plethora of action cartoons that revolved around pre-established IPs, the ’90s were also no stranger to original superhero shows, which involved Swat Kats: The Radical Squadron.
Created by Christian and Yvon Tremblay, the show was notable for gearing toward a more mature tone with its action and themes, and even though its tenure was short-lived, its impact still lives on through its cult following. With the two on board to embark on a new chapter of the classic show, the Tremblay brothers reflected on their inspirations for the show’s rogues’ gallery during an exclusive interview with Fandomwire at Mumbai Comic Con.

The 1960s "Batman" television series can be pretty zany, but for many of the actors who appeared on the show it was no laughing matter. Incredibly talented character actors like Frank Gorshin, Cesar Romero, Eartha Kitt, and Julie Newmar all brought intensity to their roles as various members of the caped crusader's rogues gallery, taking their performances deadly serious despite the show's ridiculous levels of camp. Among the great "Batman" television villains is Burgess Meredith as The Penguin, the arctic bird-based baddie with designs on taking over Gotham through political avenues. Meredith was no stranger to really giving a role his all, even allowing himself to be lit on fire for an episode of "The Twilight Zone," and he approached the Penguin with just as much pride in his work.

It's no secret that Ben Affleck's time as Batman was a bit of a mixed bag. From the, shall we say, not-so-great initial reaction to his casting as the Caped Crusader to the pretty negative reviews for "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," it all got off to a rocky start. Then, when director Zack Snyder's "Justice League" turned into a commercial disaster, things went from bad to worse, with Affleck departing the role before he ever got a solo film. That's to say, there's a lot for Affleck to dislike about the experience.
In an interview with GQ, however, the actor, director, and producer revealed that his least favorite part of the experience has nothing to do with the reception (nor the frustrating missed opportunity that came with him ending his run as Batman). No, it was...

The DC Extended Universe is dear to its fans, even if WB decided to reboot and bury it entirely. James Gunn’s version of the franchise is set to be a lot brighter than what Zack Snyder attempted, and Ben Affleck might have sussed this issue out as well.
Zack Snyder’s version of the DC Universe was definitely not aimed at kids, with the IP employing a grittier look that resonated with a section of the audience. However, Ben Affleck, who essayed the role of Batman, was very familiar with the fact that Snyder’s interpretation of the DC Universe might be in for a problem.

"This is going to be the most expensive home movie I ever made." Those are the alleged words of director Matthew Vaughn, according to Christopher Mintz-Plasse, one of the stars of 2010's "Kick-Ass." In an interview with Chron at the time, the "Superbad" star explained that Vaughn's R-rated superhero movie "almost didn't get made" and that "nobody wanted to touch it."
That all may be hard to imagine now. Why wouldn't a studio want to back a comic book movie with a killer cast? And this is Matthew Vaughn we're talking about! But 2010 was a very different time. Vaughn hadn't yet reinvented the "X-Men" franchise with "First Class," nor had he delivered the "Kingsman" property. He was merely a stylish filmmaker...

Matt Reeves has done a tremendous job with the way that he has created the world of The Batman, but there is one thing that his show, The Penguin, arguably does better than the film, despite largely having the same tone and being set in the same universe.

Zoë Kravitz is undoubtedly one of the most prolific actors of this generation. From starring in one huge film franchise to another, she recently proved that her talent can extend beyond acting with the release of her acclaimed directorial debut, Blink Twice, just last year. Now, Kravitz may be stepping behind the camera once again after the successful theatrical debut of the psychological thriller. According to Deadline, the actress-turned-filmmaker is in talks to direct Sony Pictures' How To Save a Marriage. It is reportedly still in early stages of development.
While plot details about How To Save a Marriage remain under wraps, sources close to Deadline say that the film exudes "edgy undertones" akin to Blink Twice. The film's dark nature reportedly pushed the executives behind the project to choose Kravitz as its director. Amazon MGM Studios is in full control of the James Bond franchise, and doesn’t everyone know it! After years of being stalled since Daniel Craig hung up his license to kill in 2021, the studio’s take-over of the franchise from Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson has already caused plenty of waves, and now it looks like another big upheaval is coming for the franchise – but this time it is all about where the next Bond movie will be made rather than who will be starring in it.
According to a report from The Sun, filming restrictions that are about to be imposed on London in the U.K. have Amazon looking to send James Bond north to film his next action adventure, with Liverpool being thought to be top of the list of locations that could become the home of the Bond franchise. Zack Snyder's Justice League was the movie that all Snyder fans wanted to see when Joss Whedon’s version of the Dceu film was released in 2017 to a whole host of criticism. They finally got their wish in 2021, when Synder’s recut, reshot, and reedited version of the movie was finally given its time to shine. While it was still not perfect by any means in the eyes of critics, the film seemed to right a cinematic wrong in several ways. And that is something that Ben Affleck reflected on in a recent interview with GQ.
While Affleck was denied a real runout as the Dceu’s Batman, instead sharing Batman vs Superman with Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel, and subsequently making small appearances in other heroes’ movies, he is still fond of his time as the Dark Knight. In the age of binge-worthy television, few series manage to rise above entertainment and land a lasting social impact. That’s exactly what happened when Michael Keaton stepped into one of the most powerful roles of his career. At the center of Hulu’s Dopesick, Keaton helped tell a story many Americans already knew, but few fully understood.
It was a story about a family, a drug, and a devastating betrayal of the public trust. The Hulu mini-series creator, Danny Strong, reflected on the story behind the show’s unflinching portrayal of the epidemic and the scandal of the world’s most evil family.

Even though Ben Affleck liked playing Batman, he certainly doesn't seem to miss wearing the iconic batsuit, as he described it as "horrendous." Ben Affleck played Bruce Wayne / Batman in the Dceu films Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, Justice League, and The Flash. Despite the initial fan reaction to Affleck's casting being overwhelmingly negative, the same audience that initially rejected him eventually came to embrace his depiction of the Caped Crusader and still wants him to return to the role. Yet Affleck certainly doesn't sound nostalgic about putting on the cape and cowl again.
Speaking with GQ about his expansive career, when the subject of 2023's The Flash came up, Affleck was asked if that film had his favorite Batsuit. Affleck revealed that he hated wearing not just that Batman costume but all of them, describing them as "horrendous to wear" and "the least fun part" of playing the iconic superhero.

For years, comic books have been adapted into films or television, some of them more successful than others. However, there are a few titles that are universally praised as impeccable films.
Academy Award-winning filmmaker Christopher Nolan helmed one of the most influential superhero trilogies, The Dark Knight Trilogy. The films started in 2005 with Batman Begins, continued with 2008's The Dark Knight, and 2012's The Dark Knight Rises. Although all three of them received praise for different reasons,The Dark Knight is largely the most haunting of them all, and is often referred to as the best superhero movie of all time. Its influence is undeniable, as The Dark Knight has just become a hit again on Netflix, 17 years after its release, via Tudum.
Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy was released on Apr. 1 in the U.S. in its entirety. However, only one film drew the attention of several subscribers: The Dark Knight.
