Anybody who has ever taken a stab at acting knows one aspect of the process deemed the absolute worst: the audition. Imagine stepping foot into a room filled with several people who are all there to judge you. Your looks, personality, emotions… every aspect of who you are on display for a room full of strangers. Well, in Hollywood, there is a legend of one audition that has been deemed the best put on tape. It was an audition for a new film by a director who was credited with single-handedly creating the summer blockbuster and who had a dream about crafting a more intimate family story about a kid and an alien. Imagine the immense pressure any actor, let alone a ten-year-old child, would be under to nail this audition. Yet this audition was so good that within seconds, the director, Steven Spielberg, uttered the words that would forever change this ten-year-old life: “Ok,...

Here’s a story about a different kind of ‘lockdown.’ This near-perfect Americana drama might be the real pinnacle of Sissy Spacek’s wonderful career. The no-baloney tale of rural life on the Texas coastline during WW2 is packed with strong emotions and solid sentiment. Wartime hardship and catch-as-catch-can romance strike an uneasy balance with more threatening material, including a highly suspenseful finish. First-time director Jack Fisk hits this one out of the park, with help from Eric Roberts, William Sanderson, Tracey Walter, R.G. Armstrong, Sam Shepard and little Henry Thomas. This is one of those special pictures that creates a warm feeling about people. The ‘Rum and Coca Cola’ scene is perfection of a special kind.

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit platforms. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
Adaptation (Spike Jonze)
It’s almost depressing to rewatch Adaptation in 2016, because it’s a reminder of how strong an actor Nicolas Cage is when he actually invests himself in good projects. It was soon after this that his career went off the rails, but he’s remarkably impressive here, playing the dual roles of Charlie Kaufman and his fictional twin brother, Donald. As much a mind-fuck as any other Kaufman screenplay,...

Tuesday’s Short + Feature: These Boots and Mystery Train
Music is at the heart of this program, which pairs a zany music video by Finnish master Aki Kaurismäki with a tune-filled career highlight from American independent-film pioneer Jim Jarmusch. In the 1993 These Boots, Kaurismäki’s band of pompadoured “Finnish Elvis” rockers, the Leningrad Cowboys, cover a Nancy Sinatra classic in their signature deadpan style. It’s the perfect prelude to Jarmusch’s 1989 Mystery Train, a homage to the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll and the musical legacy of Memphis, featuring appearances by Screamin’ Jay Hawkins and Joe Strummer.

Actor and director Dexter Fletcher pays tribute to the much-loved star, who died on Wednesday, aged 71
Actor and director Dexter Fletcher remembers his friend Bob Hoskins, with whom he appeared in The Long Good Friday and The Raggedy Rawney
I first met Bob Hoskins at a party when I was nine. It was good to connect with the man from On the Move, in which he played a character who couldn't read. He was likable and open, just like on the telly. A few years later, we worked together on The Long Good Friday. For me, as a child actor, it was an inspirational lesson in acting and one that will stay with me for ever.

Bob Hoskins, the celebrated English actor who brought gravitas and a wicked smile to any genre he worked in, from crime thrillers like The Long Good Friday to fantasy comedies such as Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Hook, died from pneumonia Tuesday. He was 71.
The actor claimed to have never taken any acting lessons – according to him, he was waiting at a theatre bar for a friend to finish an audition when someone gave him a script and said, “You’re next.” He scored the part at that audition and soon after, the short-statured Hoskins became a giant on the stage and screen, beloved by audiences around the world.
Hoskins appeared in various UK television series and mini-series during the 1970s, when he also found a calling on the British stage. However, the actor broke through on the big screen in the 1980s. His first major role was in the...

I'm hugely saddened to report that Oscar-nominated British actor Bob Hoskins -- the quintessential Cockney gent of latter-day cinema -- has passed away. Aged 71, he died in hospital following a bout of pneumonia. His wife, Linda, and four children issued a statement clarifying that the Londoner "died peacefully at hospital last night surrounded by family," and thanked well-wishers for their "messages of love and support." Hoskins' health had been declining for some time: he retired from acting in 2012 after being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. His last screen role was in "Snow White and the Huntsman." After supporting roles in such films as "Zulu Dawn" and a BAFTA-nominated turn in Dennis Potter's TV landmark "Pennies From Heaven," Hoskins' film breakthrough came in his late thirties with the role of conflicted East End crime boss Harold Shand in the 1980 gangster classic "The Long Good Friday," which earned him another BAFTA nod.

The actor Bob Hoskins has died, at the age of 71. The news was broken by his agent, revealing that Hoskins had been suffering from pneumonia. Hoskins had retired from acting last August, following a diagnosis of Parkinson's disease the year before.
He leaves behind an incredible body of work, including many of our favourites. Few will forget the mark he left on films such as The Long Good Friday, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Brazil and Mona Lisa. Even in lesser films, Hoskins could be relied on to bring something worth handing over the admission money for. Even Super Mario Bros, a film that Hoskins himself hated.
He dabbled in directing too, with the features The Raggedy Rawney and Rainbow.
Hoskins' final film was Snow White And The Huntsman. He is survived...
