Seven years ago, Lionsgate Home Entertainment revived the defunct Vestron Video label for the Vestron Video Collector’s Series of Blu-ray releases, and over the years that series has turned out to be pretty impressive. The list of Vestron Blu-rays includes Chopping Mall, Blood Diner, the Waxwork movies, Return of the Living Dead ///, The Gate, the Wishmaster films, the Warlock films, Slaughter High, Class of 1999, Beyond Re-Animator, Dagon, Maximum Overdrive, Shivers, Little Monsters, The Wraith, Dementia 13, Steel Dawn, Candyman: Day of the Dead, Dream a Little Dream, Extreme Prejudice, Earth Girls Are Easy, the Dentist movies, the Silent Night, Deadly Night sequels, and more. The thirtieth release from the revived Vestron is a Blu-ray of the 1987 horror comedy My Best Friend Is a Vampire – and the street date is next Tuesday, July 25th! Not all teenage werewolf movies are created equal.
As a kid, I couldn’t have been more primed to see 1985’s Teen Wolf, a movie that seemed positively made just for me. I was obsessed with star Michael J. Fox, first from his TV work as Alex P. Keaton on Family Ties and then as Marty McFly in Back to the Future, to this day my favorite movie of all time. Werewolves have always been my movie monster of choice, even as a boy of just eight years old. Combining Michael J. Fox with werewolves—in a high school comedy, no less, then (and possibly still) one of my favorite film genres—seemed a foolproof recipe for a classic. And, in its way, Teen Wolf is a classic: a movie that’s probably as good as it can be while still being far from great. It’s sweet, it means well,...

High schools have seen their share of monsters in the movies, be they werewolves (Teen Wolf, I Was a Teenage Werewolf, Ginger Snaps), vampires (Twilight, My Best Friend is a Vampire), aliens (The Faculty), or just your average, garden-shear variety slasher (Prom Night, Scream, etc.). You might think that the 1987 horror film Zombie High attempts to bring the undead to the high school hallway. You would be wrong. For proof, check out Scream Factory’s new Blu-ray of Zombie High, which isn’t really a zombie movie and is barely even a horror film.

The best thing about Silent Night, Deadly Night 3: Better Watch Out! is the cover, and to even suggest that it’s a great cover is solely based on the pre-shrunk Sndn branding from the original film combined with an absolute love for the Ive logo at the bottom of the poster/cover box. The content of the film is completely trash. Late 80’s hooey! I’m not gonna be the guy who’s complaining that it is a sequel in name only even if it does follow around poor Bah Humbugged Ricky Caldwell. I mean at least Ricky Caldwell’s back and following the late 80’s psychic saves the day/psychic causes all the problems trope. And yeah, there’s a Santa Claus and he’s a killer and there’s creepy Christmas imagery, so I can see why it has a fan base. This epitomizes how the direct...

One of the long “lost” (I’ll use that loosely) horror movies that’s been absent on DVD ever since the birth of the format has been Final Exam (1981). The film was directed by Jimmy Huston (My Best Friend is a Vampire) and starred Cecile Bagdadi, in her only on-screen performance.

Watching the trailer for the Canadian-produced TV movie My Babysitter’s a Vampire (making its American premiere Friday on the Disney Channel), the most glaring thing I couldn’t wrap my head around is why a kid that far in his teens still needs a babysitter – a babysitter that looks to be the same age as him.
Is this boy a juvenile delinquent? Is he a total sissy? Are his parents super overprotective? What’s the deal? And is it really a good idea to pair a teenage boy almost assuredly experiencing hormonal overdrive with a really cute girl of an appropriate age for him to engage in the sort of carnal activity the adult film world has taught me always happens whenever an attractive babysitter is hired? That doesn’t seem right at all. Same reason I think it should be illegal for women to order pizza or hire...

Robert Sean Leonard is probably best known in millennial circles for his work as Dr. James Wilson on House, but those of us whose pop culture knowledge runs a bit deeper will recall that he portrayed a vampire in the teen-friendly My Best Friend Is A Vampire. This film was part of Hollywood’s late Eighties vampire frenzy, a period in which actors like Jim Carrey (Once Bitten) and Chris Sarandon (Fright Night) also played these fiendishly handsome creatures of the night.
Well, as we all know, the vampire craze has experienced a resurgence over the last few years, thanks mainly to the work of one Robert Pattinson in the Twilight Saga. So when Robert Sean Leonard stopped by the set of VH1′s new morning show, Big Morning Buzz Live, we asked him if he, as an elder statesman of the Sexy Vampire set, had any advice for R Pattz.

Bite Nite We've got vampires....vampires...vampires!! Featuring a cast of over 120 actors and actresses, Bite Nite, a new horror comedy in the tradition of such classics as Fright Night, My Best Friend is a Vampire, Beverly Hills Vamp and Vamp is nearing completion of post production. The town's orphanage was built on a magnetic vortex to protect its power, however the magnetic waves of the vortex make human blood irresistible to vampires. Count Vagula and his vamps have been biting the citizens of San Gwynne for generations until a new gang with fangs discovers the secret. Tremors? Nightbreed? Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat? 976-evil? Are all on the list this year. And though there were not huge horror wins in sound editing through screenplays, the Technical Awards never cease to bring out the horror veterans. Notably Tim Drnec who contributed to such VHS classics as Alien Seed, Destroyer, and Prison won for his work on “Spydercam 3D volumetric suspended cable camera technologies.” An award also shared with Ben Britten Smith and Matt Davis who both also worked on Constantine.
But among all the winners, the Academy also honored some great loses in 2010. And though they mentioned some of our heroes, Dennis Hooper (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2), Kevin McCarthy (Invasion of the Body Snatchers) and Dino de Laurentiis (King Kong), they did not mention Zelda Rubinstein or Corey Haim. But we will in this last section and the others lost to us last year.
So farewell fight fans and remember,...

At the end of the late ‘80s teen movie, My Best Friend is a Vampire, the titular night walker, as played by future House star Robert Sean Leonard, is confronted in a cemetery by his parents. He’s accompanied by a very androgynous girl, and his parents are devastated because they don’t want their son to be gay, which they’ve confused with his vampirism the entire movie. Fortunately, he reassures them, he’s not gay, and boy, are they relieved. The implication throughout the scene is that it’d be a lot worse if he were gay, and that being a vampire is...

Teenage vampires are commonplace today but 20 years ago they were a new phenomenon. In the 1980s we had such films as 'Fright Night,' 'Once Bitten,' 'My Best Friend Is a Vampire' and the most famous teen vampire film of all, 'The Lost Boys' (1987).
The idea for the film came from 'Peter Pan.' The screenwriters apparently noticed that Peter flies, never ages and only visits Wendy at night. Maybe J.M. Barrie was writing a vampire story and didn't know it.
The original screenplay for 'The Lost Boys' called for "a bunch of 'Goonies'-type 5th-6th grade kid vampires." The David character (Kiefer Sutherland) was originally named Peter and the other vampires were named after the Lost Boys in 'Peter Pan.' However, when unknown Joel Schumacher was tapped to direct, he hated the kid angle...

Producer Jonathan Sothcott has revealed details of his next film to Dread Central. Sothcott you may remember is behind the remake of classic 70s horror The Asphyx, and while we have to wait a while longer for work to start on that film, in the meantime Sothcott has announced what sounds to be a sure-fire Friday night beer-n-booze no brainer: Strippers vs. Werewolves!
It sounds like one hell of a showdown… Says Sothcott:
The script has been written by a very talented guy named Pat Higgins, who has made a string of micro budget genre films in the UK including Hellbride, KillerKiller and Bordello Death Tales. His stuff is very stylish and he’s already developed quite a cult following. We’d been chatting about doing something together and he said he was working on a script called Strippers Vs Werewolves. “This I must see”, I thought. I read it...

You may not be familiar with Brit director Pat Higgins but he's certainly paying his horror dues. Higgins is responsible for writing and directing some low budget UK horror titles such as 'Bordello Death Tales', 'The Devil's Music', 'KillerKiller', 'Hellbride' and 'TrashHouse'. And now he's back with the intriguingly titled 'Strippers vs. Werewolves'. Check out more about the flick below and what producer Jonathon Sothcott has to say as well as news on the first casting for the movie - ex-soap star and out-and-out hottie Adele Silva (below). Television watchers may know him best as Dr. James Wilson, the steadfast number two to Hugh Laurie's misanthropic medical anti-hero on "House," but my fondness for Robert Sean Leonard goes back to his early days. In 1988 he struggled admirably adjusting to life as a newly undead teenager (My Best Friend is a Vampire), and a year later he struggled further to express his inner artist at a 1950's era prep school (Dead Poets Society). (Without a doubt, Robert Sean Leonard is and was a fine on-screen struggler.)
However, my favorite movie to watch Leonard struggle in came during his fruitful twentysomething years, when he and a 19-year-old Christian Bale partnered to hoof it up in the face of fascism. Yes folks, I'm talking about the best and only Nazi Germany period dance drama ever made: Swing Kids!

Parents, it is popularly thought, do not understand. This sentiment has been a constant running throughout human history, but it seems like parents have understood even less in the past century. It’s been 60 years since the word teenager was first coined, and parental understanding has just gotten murkier since. What the hell is their problem anyway, trying to instill you with their personal system of values? It’s Bs and we all know it is. This is why it’s necessary to rebel!
Doing something dangerous is usually a successful strategy for rebelling against parental authority. Bliss Cavendar, as played by Ellen Page in this week’s “Whip It!,” knows a good thing in the sport of roller derby when she sees it. Your mom trying to get you into the beauty pageant scene? DVD Rating: 2.5/5.0 Chicago – Let’s be honest. Most ‘lost’ films are not found for a reason. It’s so funny to me that movies that were probably ignored for a good reason can suddenly become cult hits just because they’re unavailable for a few years. Having said that, there are one or two movies worth re-finding in Lionsgate’s ’80s-themed “The Lost Collection,” but there are also six to seven that should stay lost.
In “The Lost Collection,” Lionsgate has released eight ’80s movies that time has essentially forgotten. With stars like Drew Barrymore, Robert Sean Leonard, Keanu Reeves, Leslie Nielsen, and Jon Cryer (twice!), “The Lost Collection” has something for everyone. Or nothing for someone. Or something for a few people. I’m confused.
The Lost Collection was released on DVD on April 14th, 2009.

Milk (Universal) Sean Penn deservedly captured his second Best Actor Oscar (and Dustin Lance Black a statuette for his original screenplay) in director Gus Van Sant’s portrait of San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man to hold public office in the U.S. Alternately heartbreaking, infuriating and very funny, a film that both captures a bygone era and is still very timely.
