Movie posters are an important advertising element for a film. But what happens when they don't do such a great job in promoting their film?
Movie posters are supposed to be the first and most prominent promotional tool of a film. Many times movie posters may be the first official material released for a film production as well as the first opportunity that the film has to reach its potential audience. That makes them very important. Like trailers, they are meant to capture your attention. Unlike trailers, they are not supposed to give too much away. There are various techniques that have been used over the years to accomplish this task including bright colors, eye-catching fonts, and the prominent inclusion of big name stars’ faces. Graphic design as well as a general nod to the production design of the film are important components for every movie poster. Before the advent of computers,...

Calling all dog lovers! Aziz Ansari recently partnered up with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and Amy Poehler's Smart Girls webseries, Heavy Petting, to lend his voice to an adorable pooch in need of a loving home. In the hilarious video, the Master of None star voices a Maltese mix named Buddy, who—despite his small stature—packs a powerful New York City punch with an attitude (and accent!) to match. "I chew with my mouth open because that's how we do it in New York," Ansari jokes as the pup gets busy munching on a snack. In the end, Ansari admits "the whole tough guy thing is a bit exhausting" and reveals...

Smart Girls at the Party has released yet another web series to add to its growing list of originals. The digital video network, launched by actress Amy Poehler in 2008 and owned by Legendary Entertainment, debuted its new female-centric talk show web series She Said on November 16, 2015.
Co-hosted by comedians and real-life fiancés Cameron Esposito and Rhea Butcher, She Said is described in a release as “a new kind of talk show that tackles sensitive and personal topics, with a lighthearted and candid ‘she said/she said’ look at the world.” In the debut episode of She Said, Esposito and Butcher discuss body-positive women’s health issues like getting their periods and going to the gynecologist. Future episodes will cover topics like women in sports, coming out, and female representation in film and TV.

Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls at the Party has a new series full of cute creatures to delight viewers. To celebrate Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, the digital network teamed with the Aspca animal shelters to launch the pet-centric series Heavy Petting on October 14, 2015.
As the potentially risqué name suggests, Heavy Petting fittingly combines the idea of adopting or fostering a pet with finding the next love of your life. Each episode will take the form of a Tinder-style dating profile of one cat or dog from an Aspca shelter around the U.S. For added comedic effect, well-known Hollywood names will lend their voices to the animals. The first episode features comedian John Mulaney as the voice of Bart the mixed breed puppy. Future pets will be voiced by acting talent like Ike Barinholtz, Aziz Ansari, Paul Scheer, Nick Offerman, and Aubrey Plaza (who’s no stranger to giving...

Exclusive: Funding body greenlights shorts from women directors.
Creative England has greenlit six comedy shorts for its iShorts+ Funny Girls initiative, run in partnership with Big Talk and Baby Cow, as part of the BFI Net.Work.
The initiative aims to find “bold, entertaining and original stories” from new female screen comedy talent.
The six finalist films were selected from around 240 applicant teams nationwide, after they attended seminars by comedy writers such as The Inbetweeners’ Simon Bird and Man Up’s Tess Morris, among others. There were also sessions with development executives and comedy script editors.
Each of the finalists has now received £10,000 ($15,000) towards the budget of their films from Creative England, as well as additional financial contributions and mentoring, and will all go into production in the next three months.
Celine Haddad, senior film executive at Creative England, said: “We’re incredibly excited to give the six selected filmmakers a platform to showcase and further hone their...

When held up to the heady heights of its BAFTA-winning spiritual predecessor Twenty Twelve, the first series of W1A fell short on occasions.
But with a new series opener in which a high-level management power struggle starts simmering alongside the usual japes, hi-jinks and gaffes at Broadcasting House, the BBC's self-flagellating satire is at last hitting its stride.
Hugh Bonneville's still the star of the show as Ian Fletcher, keeping a sharp focus on charter renewal as his contemporaries in the Way Ahead Task Force fall over themselves (almost literally at one point) to get one over on their professional rivals. There's whispers of a new senior post at stake, and everyone seems to have their eye on it.

Tiff’s Midnight Madness program turned 25 this year, and for two and half decades, the hardworking programers have gathered some of the strangest, most terrifying, wild, intriguing and downright entertaining films from around the world. From dark comedies to Japanese gore-fests and indie horror gems, the Midnight Madness program hasn’t lost its edge as one the leading showcases of genre cinema. In its 25-year history, Midnight Madness has introduced adventurous late-night moviegoers to such cult faves as Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused and Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs. But what separates Midnight Madness from, say, Montreal’s three and half week long genre festival Fantasia, is that Tiff selects only ten films to make the cut. In other words, these programmers don’t mess around. Last week I decided that I would post reviews of my personal favourite films that screened in past years. And just like the Tiff programmers,...

Twilight star Ashley Greene has a scruffy but adorable new companion—and no, it's not her co-star, Robert Pattinson. The 22-year-old actress has just acquired a white Toy Fox Terrier, which she's dubbed Marlow, and it's a total case of puppy love. "She was meant to be mine," Greene told People magazine while cradling her furry new pal in her arms at the For Joseph launch party at Kitson in West Hollywood on Thursday. "I wasn't looking for a dog, and I happened to see her picture online, and I was like, 'I have to have that dog.'" And according to Greene, we'll be seeing.

It is thinkable that within a year, there will be no more new Fords, no more Dodges, no more Chevys to drive to the levee. It is less than a year since the manufacture of Postum was discontinued. Meccano sets are made of plastic. Piece by piece, the American prospect is being dismantled. Will the pulse of teenage boys quicken at the sight of the new Kia or Hyundai? Will they envy their pal because his dad drives a Camaro? I think that's all over with. There will be a void in our national imagination. Let me tell you about how it used to be.
In my opinion, the mourner of Miss American Pie drove a Studebaker. It's simply that "Chevy" was an easier rhyme. Since the classic 50s Chevy we think of is the '57 Bel Air, it is reasonable to conclude that the ride of Miss Pie's friend...
