Amitabh Bachchan as Ganga Ram, Mithun Chakraborthy as Jamuna Das ( Mithun replaced Jeetendra), and Rishi Kapoor as Saraswati Chandra, were the original trio to star in this film. Mukesh Khanna was approached to play the main villain. It is rumored that shooting with the trio had taken place before the final changes took effect.
The original script was written by Kader Khan, but due to rivalry between Manmohan Desai and Kader Khan the script was changed. In the original script the movie was a three hero project, and the third hero's role was written for Rishi Kapoor.
The song Disco Bhangra was conceived with Mithun Chakraborthy in mind. When the script was changed,Amitabh ended up doing the song. He self admittedly felt uncomfortable doing the song.
While writing the original script of Ganga Jamuna Saraswati, Kader Khan's relationship with Amitabh turned bad . Kader stated "My association with Amitabh Bachchan started with Khoon Pasina and Manmohan Desai's Parvarish. We still speak on the phone once in a while. But, in between, our relations had soured.I don't want to say much about why that happened.I had told him not to enter politics, but that is a different story. After he renounced politics, his behaviour changed.I always called him Amit, but, one day, when I called him Amit, it did not go down well with him.One of the producers from the south asked me, "Aap sirji ko mila?" I asked "Kaun sirji?" He was shocked and said, "Sirji tumko nahi maloom? Amitabh Bachchan." I told him, "I call him Amit, he is a friend."He said, "Nahi. Aap usse hamesha sirji bolna, Amit nahi bolna abhi, he is a big man." Amitabh was approaching us and he thought like all the others I would call him 'Sirji', which I did not. From that day, I never called out to him and he never spoke to me. After that, I went south to do films and mostly wrote the dialogues of the south remakes that Jeetendra did.
Mithun Chakraborty didn't co-operate to dub his dialog's and Sudesh Bhonsle stepped in who dubbed some of his dialogues. The speculation at the time was that Mithun felt the director Manmohan Desai played favorite to Amitabh Bachchan. Mithun was upset with how much his role was edited out. His role now seemed very weak. So in retaliation he refused to complete his dubbing The film released in 1988 with a few scenes with Mithun's voice dubbed. Surprisingly in later years a different version was released on DVD. In this version released, Mithun's voice was not dubbed in any scene's. Mithun spoke his dialogues in his own voice and not a dubbing artiste as in the original released version. This would come as a complete shocker due to the story of Mithun not completing his dubbing due to problems with Manmohan Desai. Many wonder when Mithun dubbed for those scenes and why this version was not released in 1988 when the film was first released . Both version of the film are on you tube.
