An excited crowd of country music festival-goers and Palm Springs locals looked on at the intimate stage as Charley Crockett started off the night by asserting a truth that any songwriter knows; “It’s easy to start a song. It’s a lot harder to finish one”. Stephen Wilson Jr. and Drayton Farley nodded in agreement alongside him. Rolling Stone’s Senior Editor Joseph Hudak had kicked off the night by asking the three groundbreaking country music artists their songwriting process in the latest installment of the ‘Rolling Stone Writers’ Room’, presented by George Dickel.

Slipknot donned 1999-style red jumpsuits and masks for their first concert of 2024 on Thursday (April 25th), kicking off a year-long 25th anniversary celebration of their classic self-titled album. The show also marked the masked metal act’s first gig with its new drummer, presumed to be ex-Sepultura stickman Eloy Casagrande.
The club show at Pappy & Harriet’s Palace in Pioneertown, California, was booked as a warm-up gig for Slipknot’s co-headlining set at the Sick New World festival in Las Vegas on Saturday (April 27th).

At one point during the concert, frontman Corey Taylor exclaimed, “Tonight it doesn’t matter where you came from, it doesn’t matter when you were born. This year is 19-fucking-99. We’re going to play you some songs from beyond that year, but goddamn it, it all started in ’99 and it is starting again here tonight.”

Meryl Streep has been regarded as one of the most successful people of all time. Having broken records with how talented she is, normality has long escaped her life. However, many might not know that the actress faced one of the most human tragedies of them all; loss.
Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada
Before getting married to Don Gummer, Streep was famously involved with her Measure for Measure co-star, John Cazale, who was best known for his work on projects like The Deer Hunter and The Godfather. The two shared a very close and intimate connection that lasted until his passing from lung cancer. Many have found the actress to be very brave to have gone through such sorrow while simultaneously working.
However, it is when greatness is in the company of greatness that they are finally allowed to be people. Al Pacino is at the same level of fame as Streep.

It’s been almost exactly one year since Columbia Pictures / Screen Gems brought The Pope’s Exorcist (read our review Here), a supernatural thriller starring Russell Crowe, to theatres. Just two weeks after the film was released, our friends at Bloody Disgusting heard that a sequel was in development… but everything has been quiet since then. During a recent interview with The Six O’Clock Show, Crowe confirmed that a sequel is in development – and that The Pope’s Exorcist was actually meant to be chapter one in a trilogy!
As it turns out, things have been quiet on the Pope’s Exorcist front because there was a behind-the-scenes shake-up with the studio executives, but it sounds like Crowe still has hopes that the trilogy is going to happen. He told The Six O’Clock Show (with thanks to MovieWeb for the transcription), “(A sequel) is in discussion at the moment. The...

Turns out the real demon in indie horror film “Late Night With the Devil” is its use of AI.
The IFC Films/Shudder release utilized artificial intelligence for a trio of still images — title cards, specifically — intended to enhance the ’70s aesthetic, according to the film’s directors Cameron and Colin Cairnes. That has not gone over well within the creative community on X (formerly known as Twitter).
“In conjunction with our amazing graphics and production design team, all of whom worked tirelessly to give this film the ’70s aesthetic we had always imagined, we experimented with AI for three still images which we edited further and ultimately appear as very brief interstitials in the film,” the Cairnes brothers told Variety. “We feel incredibly fortunate to have had such a talented and passionate cast, crew and producing team go above and beyond to help bring this film to life. Released soon after the end of the Great Depression and on the precipice of America’s entry into World War II, William Dieterle’s All That Money Can Buy is a peculiar and fascinating blend of the populist agitprop of the 1930s and the patriotic hokum that defined much of the war years.
In transposing the legend of Faust and his pact with the devil to a rousing bit of American folklore, the screenplay by Dan Totheroh and Stephen Vincent Benét presents greed as anathema to the American way of life, and in one of the few brief eras where that notion was anything short of risible. As such, rugged individualism is spurned in favor of collectivism, specifically in the exalting of the values of an agricultural grange—a communal safety net for small farmers like All That Money Can Buy’s protagonist, Jabez Stone (James Craig).

We can confirm that it’ll have been a noteworthy 2024 for Hanna Gray Organschi. With a recent visit to Sundance Screenwriters Lab and the eventual premiere of her next short in “F*ck That Guy,” we’re set for what might be a new acerbic and clever voice – with a possible thorny, circa 1990s dramedy-like exploration of entrepreneurship and reproductive rights sub-genre sphere circa 1990s. With one of her first creds being an Director’s Assistant for Antonio Campos on The Devil All the Time, there’ll be some connective tissue between the pending short project and her eventual feature in Rubber Hut.…...

I'm sorry, do you have some prior commitment? Well, sit down and grab a cube of cheese because the leading ladies of The Devil Wears Prada are reuniting at the 30th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards. Nearly 18 years after the release of the iconic 2006 film The Devil Wears Prada, actors Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, and Anne Hathaway will come together on stage — hopefully all donning the Chanel boots.
The two recently opened up in a Variety interview about working together on the film, now turning 18 years old (that’s old enough to drink in England), and delivered some iconic quotes. “Is there some reason that my coffee isn’t here? Has she died or something?” and “Can you please spell ‘Gabbana’?” were just a few.

Some apotheosis of film culture has been reached with Freddy Got Fingered‘s addition to the Criterion Channel. Three years after we interviewed Tom Green about his consummate film maudit, it’s appearing on the service’s Razzie-centered program that also includes the now-admired likes of Cruising, Heaven’s Gate, Querelle, and Ishtar; the still-due likes of Under the Cherry Moon; and the more-contested Gigli, Swept Away, and Nicolas Cage-led Wicker Man. In all cases it’s an opportunity to reconsider one of the lamest, thin-gruel entities in modern culture.

Amigo the Devil is prepping for the release of his new album, Yours Until the War Is Over, arriving February 23rd. In advance of the LP, the dark-folk troubadour has unveiled a new song, albeit in an unconventional manner.
Following the official release of the singles “Cannibal Within” and “The Mechanic,” the singer-guitarist also known as Danny Kiranos has leaked another new tune, “Once Upon a Time at Texaco (Pt. 1).” Although it was posted unlisted on YouTube a few days ago, many fans discovered the new track via a voicemail at the phone number (458) 867-1239.
That phone number came from a wild and wacky late-night TV commercial promoting “The Mechanic” that Amigo hoped to get aired on MTV and Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim block. Unfortunately, the ad got resoundingly rejected for being “too violent.”

Prominent Korean filmmakers and arts organizers will hold a media event in Seoul on Friday calling for an investigation by authorities into the circumstances that led to the passing of Parasite star Lee Sun-kyun, who died last month at age 48 of an apparent suicide.
Before his death, Lee had been under police investigation for several weeks over suspected illegal drug use, accusations he strenuously denied. The actor claimed that he was the victim of a blackmail plot and that if he had consumed drugs, it was because he had been tricked into doing so. South Korean police have said that Lee passed several drug tests and sat for lengthy sessions of questioning, including one marathon meeting days before his death that lasted 19 hours. His lawyers have told local media outlets that the actor was upset by the way police were handling the investigation and how details were being leaked to the press,...

There was no shortage of quality Korean shows to watch this year. From mystery thrillers and classic dramas to riveting reality series and heart-fluttering romances, 2023 was truly the year K-content ruled the roost. More recent releases like 1940s historical thriller, Gyeonseong Creature, with Park Seo-joon (The Marvels) and Han Soo-hee (My Name), and the latest season of horror drama favorite, Sweet Home, prove the momentum isn’t dying down anytime soon as we head into 2024.

For my money, the Monkees are way, way more interesting than the Beatles.
According to Andrew Sandoval's thorough and invaluable book "The Monkees: The Day-By-Day Story of the '60s TV Pop Sensation," an ad was put in Variety and the Hollywood Reporter on September 8, 1965, looking for "four insane boys" to be the members of a new pre-fabricated pop band. The band would also star in a TV series -- deliberately meant to evoke Richard Lester's 1964 Beatles film "A Hard Day's Night" -- that would use their real names, but present their lives as a fictional merry-go-round of kooky shenanigans.
The producers zeroed in on former child actor Micky Dolenz, a friend of musician Stephen Stills named Peter Tork, a British, boyish heartthrob named Davy Jones, and heir to the Liquid Paper fortune, Mike Nesmith. Their TV series debuted on September 12, 1966, the week after "Star Trek" debuted, and...

And if you collect Blu-rays, you've come to the right place! Because, as usual, I've rounded up some of the best new Blu-ray releases just for you, dear reader. This installment features what might be Christopher Nolan's masterpiece, an early Martin Scorsese picture, a pretty darn good horror sequel, a new Poirot mystery, Denzel Washington kicking ass, and a bonafide classic starring Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones. So let's get to it! And remember to keep spinning those discs.

The sequel to 2018’s Believer has left fans more than dissatisfied. It’s already an established fact that the only good thing about the film is Han Hyo-Joo’s performance, which has taken over social media for her badassery alone. The film attempts to fill the gaps like plastering over the Mona Lisa, making a terrible sequel to a well-received film. What made Believer a big hit was the impressive cast, the action-packed story that kept you on the edge of your seats, as well as the impactful ending. Believer 2 begins before that open ending, leading up to the moments there, and then completely ruins it. We suppose you can’t trust anything with Believer in the title right now. If you’re looking for some fantastic Korean thrillers to make yourself feel better after seeing this blunder, here’s the perfect list for you.

When NBC premiered "The Cosby Show" on September 20, 1984, the network effectively claimed ownership of Thursday night primetime television for several decades. This was the unofficial beginning of Must-See TV (the moniker wouldn't be coined until 1993), and the series' ratings prominence throughout the mid- to late-'80s anchored NBC's lineup, allowing them to switch out sitcoms in the 8:30 and 9:30 slots as needed.
The other Thursday half-hour slot deemed untouchable by the network was the 9 p.m. post dominated by "Cheers." Created by James Burrows, Glen Charles, and Les Charles, the show built around a neighborhood Boston bar where everybody knows your name bounced around during its first two seasons before permanently bellying up to 9 p.m. for the rest of its 11-season run. It was the lightly ribald counterpart to the family-friendly antics of "The Cosby Show," and it never had a bad season.

Among the myriad reasons we could call the Criterion Channel the single greatest streaming service is its leveling of cinematic snobbery. Where a new World Cinema Project restoration plays, so too does Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight. I think about this looking at November’s lineup and being happiest about two new additions: a nine-film Robert Bresson retro including L’argent and The Devil, Probably; and a one-film Hype Williams retro including Belly and only Belly, but bringing as a bonus the direct-to-video Belly 2: Millionaire Boyz Club. Until recently such curation seemed impossible.
November will also feature a 20-film noir series boasting the obvious and the not. Maybe the single tightest collection is “Women of the West,” with Johnny Guitar and The Beguiled and Rancho Notorious and The Furies only half of it. Lynch/Oz, Irradiated, and My Two Voices make streaming premieres; Drylongso gets a Criterion Edition; and joining...

A short wretch and slight taste of bile comes upon realizing we are firmly in “awards season,” that time of disgrace and degradation recently portended by the first round of Look Upon My Suffering Narratives––Bradley Cooper took two hours to apply a fake nose, but is that braver than Michael Fassbender never blinking?––and established, now, by the announcement of Gotham Award nominees. Credit where it’s due, though, that this voting body gives a mite more attention to films of substance and note: leading the pack are Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest and Andrew Haigh’s All of Us Strangers, while a director nod went to Raven Jackson for All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt, Cristian Mungiu earned a screenplay nomination, and Franz Rogowski might win a best actor prize.

All Of Us Strangers by Andrew Haigh led the Gotham Awards Nominations today, with some love for Celine Song’s Past Lives and Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest, and with a Best Performance nod to Ryan Gosling for Barbie after the indie-centric awards removed a longstanding budget cap on eligibility, an opening for big-budget studio and streamer fare to submit for consideration.
All Of Us Strangers was nominated for Best International Feature, Best Screenplay and Outstanding Lead and Supporting Performances for Andrew Scott and Claire Foy. Past Lives was nominated for Best Feature, Breakthrough Director, and Outstanding Lead Performance by Greta Lee.
The disappearance of the decade-old budget cap, which had been set most recently at $35 million, is the biggest change this year. The Gotham Film & Media Institute, announcing the shift last summer, said it was meant “to broaden our reach in terms of recognition and accessibility to the wider community.

Every time spooky season rolls around, there are a few traditions that brighten up our jack-o-lanterns. One of the funniest is a new episode of The Simpsons' Treehouse of Horror.
A new year of gruesome and campy tales that brings our favorite family into unexpected chaos. From horror movie parodies to pop culture references, Treehouse of Horror is the chance to break away from the main story with some Halloween treats. And some tricks along the way!
With nearly 33 specials, The Simpsons has covered it all.
Each episode typically has three spooky segments, some arguably better than others. But with decades of stories (which you can watch online via TV Fanatic), there are many to choose from.
Below, we've picked out 25 stories from The Simpsons' Treehouse of Horror that capture our love of the season. They're great binge-watches to get in the mood for Halloween. Check them out below!

These last few years the Criterion Channel have made October viewing much easier to prioritize, and in the spirit of their ’70s and ’80s horror series we’ve graduated to––you guessed it––”’90s Horror.” A couple of obvious classics stand with cult favorites and more unknown entities (When a Stranger Calls Back and Def By Temptation are new to me). Three more series continue the trend: “Technothrillers” does what it says on the tin, courtesy the likes of eXistenZ and Demonlover; “Art-House Horror” is precisely the kind of place to host Cure, Suspiria, Onibaba; and “Pre-Code Horror” is a black-and-white dream. Phantom of the Paradise, Unfriended, and John Brahm’s The Lodger are added elsewhere.

Since his breakthrough 1994 feature Once Were Warriors, a troubling and fiery coming-of-age story indie set in New Zealand’s Maōri community, Lee Tamahori has almost exclusively resided in the realm of pulpy B-grade action cinema. From directing Pierce Brosnan’s final Bond in Die Another Day to Ice Cube in XXX: State of the Union to making a Guy Ritchie-lite actioner about Saddam Hussein’s son (The Devil’s Double), Tamahori has a strong familiarity with cheesy espionage plotlines and passable entertainment. Both sides of Tamahori’s filmography come together in his latest historical epic The Convert––results are expectedly mixed.
Presented in a decidedly prestige manner with sweeping camerawork and a plotline that decides to burn slow in building the relationships of its characters, The Convert tells of John Munro (Guy Pearce), a British preacher who is brought to the settlement of Epworth to help serve the community of settlers there.

For those following the awards season as a celebration of cinema rather than just a long trail to the Oscar stage, the Film Independent Spirit Awards can represent a treasure trove of delightful surprises. Last year, no choice caused more shock than one lone nomination for Our Father, the Devil in Best Feature. For most, this directorial debut by Cameroonian filmmaker Ellie Foumbi came out of nowhere. At the time, it was an oft-forgotten title with scant hopes of a commercial release that had been making the festival rounds since 2021, winning some juried prizes along the way. In retrospect, the Spirit nomination did its magic, and now, Our Father, The Devil is enjoying a limited release in American theaters.

If there’s one sin in criticism that many writers––myself included––fall victim to at one point or another, it’s assessing a film’s narrative by comparing it to the one they wish they saw. Our Father, The Devil, the directorial debut of Cameroonian filmmaker Ellie Foumbi, is the kind of intriguing but flawed effort that may leave some viewers wishing to sand down its rougher edges, especially as its initial slow-burning character study transforms into a moodier, altogether more conventional kidnapping thriller. A surprise nominee for Best Feature at last year’s Indie Spirit Awards, not least because it remained almost entirely under the radar within the festival circuit, it is an effective calling card for Foumbi, showcasing a talented new filmmaker equally at home making a restrained drama as she is a splashy, violent genre effort.

Ellie Foumbi’s Our Father, the Devil is an exceptionally haunting, masterful film. A highlight from both Venice (a Biennale College Cinema selection) and this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, this tour-de-force is destined for indie awards recognition.
Part psychological thriller, part spiritual journey, part cathartic experience, Our Father defies characterization. Foumbi’s script follows the entanglement of two African refugees, Marie (mesmerizing Babetida Sadjo) and Father Patrick (otherworldly Souleymane Sy Savane); despite an unspoken connection to a bloody past, they’ve built new lives in a tranquil French mountain town. A study in contrasts, the film poses profound questions: Where to draw the line between past and present, fear and faith, guilt and forgiveness, the Devil and God?…...

There are some wounds that cannot be healed. Some psychological and emotional damage that no time or distance can make better. Some horrors live within a heart and soul for an entire life, perhaps at the edges of a psyche, but always there, a constant cloud in what should be a beautiful sky. And even the opportunity to seek revenge on those that caused such trauma, does nothing to help. Our Father, The Devil, the feature debut of actor and filmmaker Elli Foumbi, tells the story of one woman's harrowing experience in fighting the most evil person she has ever known. At times a bit uneven, yet focused on its characters, it features an incredible lead performance and scenes of intensity and terror, in which...

Plot: After her dead friend’s cat runs away, Anna grows desperate to find him, ignoring the fact that her life (and body) are totally falling apart.
Review: Booger deals with the aftermath of a massive loss and how that can affect a person. Your twenties are a tough time regardless of circumstance so adding in the loss of a best friend is enough to push most people over the edge. So it’s easy to understand where Anna is coming from. Her friend Izzy isn’t simply just another person, its someone who knew the very being of Anna. Losing Izzy means that Anna has lost a part of herself, so her grief is for more than just physical loss. And anyone that’s experienced intense grief knows how strangely that can manifest itself.

The Fantasia International Film Festival is back for its 27th annual edition, running July 20 through August 9, and it’s bringing one of Hollywood’s biggest stars––in spirit now; he’s officially canceled so as to not cross the picket line of the current SAG-AFTRA strike––to Montreal with a world premiere and career recognition. Nicolas Cage, his new film Sympathy for the Devil, and his Cheval Noir Career Achievement Award aren’t the only draw for this three-week event, though.

If you are a fan of the house Miranda Priestly called home in The Devil Wears Prada, there is some good news. The stately New York City home can be all yours. It’s going to be costly, though. Harrison Ford has had feuds with several big-name actors throughout the course of his career, from Alec Baldwin over the Jack Ryan role to Josh Hartnett on the set of Hollywood Homicide. And you can add Brad Pitt to that list, who Harrison Ford butted heads with while making the 1997 thriller The Devil’s Own.
While Harrison Ford does praise Brad Pitt overall, he says in a new Esquire profile that their issues stemmed from exploring their characters and developing the screenplay. “Brad developed the script. Then they offered me the part. I saved my comments about the character and the construction of the thing—I admired Brad. First of all, I admire Brad. I think he’s a wonderful actor. He’s a really decent guy. But we couldn’t agree on a director until we came to Alan Pakula, who I had worked with before [on 1990’s Presumed Innocent] but Brad had not.

Adrian Grenier is one of the most talented actors in the business. He will always be remembered for his outstanding portrayal of Hollywood A-list star Vincent Chase in HBO’s hit show Entourage. Alongside his co-stars, Grenier did a phenomenal job of bringing these vivid and realistic characters to life.
