Taika Waititi is topping the box office with Thor: Ragnarok. But if you haven't explored his back catalogue, you're really missing out.
A minor spoiler for Hunt For The Wilderpeople lies ahead (but it's something that happens very early in the film!)
After a troubled production, the second Thor film was regarded as one of Marvel Studios’ lesser movies. The character of Thor was not a big part of the Avengers movies either, and so the prospect of a third Thor film was not keenly anticipated. Then, about two years ago, Taika Waititi was announced as director, and suddenly people got excited.
This is not because Waititi was in Green Lantern, and people who were involved in that seem to try really hard to make a good superhero film, but because Waititi’s movies have been critically acclaimed across the world, and have broken box office records...

So, we’re now three episodes into Marvel’s Inhumans and the big question is, has it gotten any better? After what many felt was a pretty disappointing and even downright awful two part premiere, has the show been able to course correct and get back on track? Perhaps proving us all wrong with our initial thoughts and reactions and having us change our tune? Well, not quite, but personally, I did enjoy this week’s episode better than what’s come before.
That’s not to say Inhumans is what you’d classify as a good television show, but for now, it’s watchable and call me crazy, but I do find myself somewhat hooked. Which means, that, in all likelihood, I’ll be tuning in next week as the search for Black Bolt continues and Maximus looks to make some moves. All of that and more is teased in the promo up above,...

When Frozen arrived in cinemas in 2013, its quick progression from hit movie to global phenomenon took many by surprise. As it turned out, the world clearly needed a story of sisters helping each other, and friends working together for the benefit of their community. Its global box office take of $1.3 billion earned it a spot in the top ten highest grossing films of all time – ninth, to be exact – and made the prospect of a sequel inevitable. However, there’s been little in the way of news or fanfare around Frozen 2 – until now.
Returning cast member Josh Gad – who plays snowman Olaf – has Tweeted a photograph taken as he began recording lines for the developing sequel:
It’s such a joy 2 back in the booth after this journey began 5 long years ago. The creative team has come up with a story worth the wait #F2 pic.twitter.com/RGYK...

Inhumans may not be cancelled yet, but even James Gunn believes Marvel and ABC’s family drama is beyond saving.
The Guardians of the Galaxy director recently hosted one of his regular Facebook Q&As, fielding questions about Vol. 3, Marvel’s current slate, and everything in between. When asked about the chances of him swooping in to “save” Inhumans, though, Gunn joked that, “it does not look like there is much saving left for the Inhumans.” Ouch.
There are, of course, certain logistics that prevent James Gunn from simply waltzing onto the set of Marvel and ABC’s eight-part series. For starters, the Marvel Cinematic Universe and its TV counterpart have been placed on two separate tracks, meaning that aside from some subtle nods here and there, shows like The Defenders and Inhumans have been hatched under Marvel’s TV arm and are therefore out of Gunn’s sphere of influence.

In a couple weeks, we’ll finally get our first taste of the new Fantastic Beasts movies, a film saga from Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling (though it’s unclear if she’ll pen the scripts for each one) that’s set to run for five movies. When the time comes, and we’ve all seen the movie, there will, of course, be plenty of comparisons to the Harry Potter series. After all, it contains magic, is set in the same world, features some of the same characters, is sprung from the mind of the same author, and it’s even been helmed by the same director.
In short, there are more than enough reasons for fans to start drawing up their compare and contrast charts, despite the fact that this movie will more than have to survive on its own merits. While at EW’s PopFest,...

When Christine Chubbuck, a 29-year-old reporter for a Florida television station, put a gun to her head and pulled the trigger in the middle of a live broadcast on July 15, 1974, she framed it as a protest against the increasing sensationalism of TV news. "In keeping with Channel 40's policy of bringing you the latest in blood and guts, and in living color," she said into the camera, "you are going to see another first: attempted suicide." By some estimates, only a few hundred people were watching as Chubbuck pilled the trigger.

Personality can take what would otherwise be a generic game and make it memorable. So it’s a shame that Livelock fails in this regard, despite how much work has gone into creating the sci-fi story and cooperative twin-stick shooter gameplay.

In order to awaken humanity, three people opt to put their minds into robots, so they can survive the crash without their squishy bodies. The British director Amma Asante achieved great acclaim with her 2013 film Belle – which greatly boosted the career of excellent lead actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw. Now, Asante is about to deliver her third feature film, and its cast need no such boost – featuring, as it does, high profile award nominees David Oyelowo and Rosamund Pike. The trailer for A United Kingdom showcases powerful performances from these two leads, as well as beautiful direction from the accomplished filmmaker at the helm.
The story is a historical drama that centres around African Prince Seretse Khama (David Oyelowo), who is summoned back to Botswana from London to lead his nation. During his time in London, however, he has met and fallen in love with Ruth Williams (Rosamund Pike) – and proposes marriage before he departs. As he returns to Botswana with his wife, the newlyweds find that their union stirs fierce international controversy.

When it comes to most films, the concept of a hero and a protagonist are one and the same, and so the two are assumed to be synonyms. The truth is that a protagonist is the main focus of a story, the person through whom the narrative flows, and the hero is the person who is trying to achieve the morally virtuous goal. It is entirely possible to take a villain — “a bad guy” — and make him or her into the protagonist of a story without compromising the inherent wickedness that makes them a compelling counterpoint to the heroes we are used to.
If someone had only explained this to writer-director David Ayer, the narrative promise of Suicide Squad might not have been lost in a sea of reluctant hero clichés and banal superhero action set pieces.
It is truly staggering just how rote and obvious the story of this...

When the time comes for the history of Hollywood in the 21st century to be written, there may be a surprising amount of space devoted to “The Huntsman: Winter’s War.” Few films better sum up this desperately franchise-thirsty era of studio moviemaking better. It's the followup to a gritty, big-budget reboot "Show White And The Huntsman," willed into existence by executives desperate for something that would let them compete with their universe building, tentpole rivals, despite 1) the original film’s female lead, Kristen Stewart, not returning, and 2) the original film underperforming theatrically and 3) no one liking the original film in the first place. And yet here we are, a little under four years on, with “The Huntsman: Winter’s War” helmed by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, visual-effects supervisor on the first film, taking over from Rupert Sanders, with Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron reprising their roles, original Snow White found in some archive.

If you walk into the theater expecting a direct sequel to Cloverfield, you may be disappointed, but I'd expect most audiences to be quite satisfied with the smart, character-driven thriller that is 10 Cloverfield Lane. Economically told from the start, the film moves beautifully. This is a strong feature debut for Dan Trachtenberg, working from a script by Josh Campbell, Matthew Stuecken, and Damien Chazelle, and a beautiful showcase for three very good actors. It is simple, it is direct, and it is impressive. Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) flees her marriage after something happens with her husband, and as she's on the road, upset, she is in a terrible car accident. When she wakes up, she is in a bunker owned by Howard (John Goodman), a farmer, who tells her that there has been some sort of attack on the surface, and they are unable to leave now. There is one other person,...

When the time comes to look back on the cinematic legacy of Robert De Niro, it's probably safe to say that "Dirty Grandpa" won't be a major focus of reflection. To be fair, it does find the actor doing something he's never done before, it's just a shame that thing happens to be an otherwise paint by numbers raunchy comedy. The advertising promised a surfeit of sleaze -- but the film is a superior thriller about a real-life, low-rent serial killers from back in the late 1940s. After a fan screening of The Magician's Apprentice at this year's Edinburgh TV festival, Steven Moffat and Brian Minchin gave a Q&A...
It's not long until Doctor Who takes its place again as a staple of Saturday night television. Peter Capaldi is back to helm the Tardis into his second run with Jenna Coleman's Clara by his side and in the two-part opener, Michelle Gomez makes her comeback as the Master's female incarnation, Missy.
At this year's Edinburgh television festival, an audience of fans were screened The Magician's Apprentice, the premiere episode written by Steven Moffat and directed by Hettie Macdonald. Following that there was a Q&A session hosted by journalist Andrew Collins with Moffat himself and fellow executive producer Brian Minchin in attendance.

TCA may has been in full swing for a week, but the powerful broadcast networks have had to wait for their turn at the plate. When the time comes for ABC, Fox, CBS, the CW and NBC to woo the critics at the Beverly Hilton, which networks will wow the crowd and which will fall flat? Broadcasters are facing increasingly stiff competition from cable networks and streaming services, so making a strong impression at the annual press tour is essential. Here is who TheWrap believes has the most to gain, and the most to lose. Most to Lose: NBC This one is.

Before 1979, Iran had a history of iconic female singers. Qamar al-Molouk Vaziri was in 1924 the first woman to sing in front of a male audience and still to “retain her good reputation”. It was a time when “women wore burkas and men were on opium”, sighs one of the protagonists of the documentary from the Iranian Ayat Najafi. Singers such as Delkash and Googoosh, as well as Sayeh Sodeyfi, performing in the film, were widely listened to, but have since then been made illegal. After the revolution, female solo-singing in public was banned on the grounds of »exceeding a certain vocal range« and »sexually arousing men in the audience«, and thereby breaking the rule of decency and of not deviating from their normal condition.

One of the movies we're highly anticipating this year has got to be Henry Hobson's Maggie, partly because it looks like an unconventional zombie story and partly because it stars Arnold Schwarzenegger in a role that requires him to emote more than anything else he's done to date.
The events unfold in a world plagued by a virus that slowly turns people into crazed, flesh eating zombies. Abigail Breslin is the titular Maggie, a young woman who has become infected and is sent home with her father, Schwarzenegger, to spend her last bit of time before the infection takes over, with friends and family. When the time comes, can her father let her go?

Hugh Bonneville's 'Downton Abbey' character is like a ''pal'' to him. The 51-year-old actor is saddened by the fact he will soon be saying ''an affectionate goodbye'' to his character, the Earl of Grantham, which he has played for five years. He said: ''We're a month into filming the sixth series, there's five months to go, so there's a lot of ground to travel. Looking, Season 2, Episode 8: “Looking for Glory”
Directed by Jamie Babbit
Written by Michael Lannan & Jc Lee
Airs Sundays at 10 Pm on HBO
As they explain multiple times in “Looking for Glory,” Patrick and Kevin are now “a thing.” They’re living together at Patrick and Agustin’s place, they’re wearing each other’s clothes, and they’re debuting their new app at the GaymerX convention. It’s unclear how much time has passed since Doris’s father’s funeral, but Patrick no longer has a cast on his arm, so it’s been a few weeks at least since the two reunited. No one seems particularly thrilled by this coupling. Patrick and Kevin’s coworkers seem miffed and bring up completely valid points about the ethicacy of a boss having a relationship with his employee. Richie, condescending as ever, warns Patrick that he’s moving too fast. Agustin...

When the time comes for Paul Feig to finally make his decision on which actresses he’s going to pick to play the spook hunters in the Ghostbusters reboot, he’s not going to be short of names. Since the announcement citing Feig and The Heat writer Katie Dippold as the creatives behind the movie, a slew of actresses’ names have been thrown into the sorting hat. Some have been self-nominated (Gillian Anderson), and the rest have surfaced through speculation and interviews (Rebel Wilson.)
After yesterday’s discovery that Jennifer Lawrence had also met with Feig for dinner to discuss a role, it seems that her casual joking about the subject might have been to mask her excitement for the part. In yet another revelation from the Sony hacking incident (via Indiewire), a set of e-mails between Sony honcho Amy Pascal and original Ghostbusters director/producer Ivan Reitman emerged. The Undertaker is one of WWE’s biggest stars of all time. The legendary Deadman has done it all in Vince McMahon’s company, including being a seven time World champion, main eventing WrestleMania and having a near-perfect Mania record of 21-1. If there was ever a Superstar that has earned the moniker of icon, it’s definitely Taker.
However, The Undertaker’s ring time has been dramatically reduced over the past several years. Citing age, as well as physical wear and tear, he has been forced to take a step back. While his fans have undoubtedly been disappointed by this, the fact is the move has only heightened anticipation for his return at the beginning of each WrestleMania season.
Basically, The Deadman’s appearances mean more and his matches are more important than ever. However, his time in the sun is obviously drawing to a close. As...

Pouvoir intime (Blind Trust)
Written by Pierre Curzi and Yves Simoneau
Directed by Yves Simoneau
Canada, 1986
Pouvoir intime, or Blind Trust if you’re of the Anglo persuasion, is a film that has more or less fallen through the cracks of time. It was issued on home video once upon a time, in the long-past age known as the VHS era, and hasn’t been seen in a newer format since. Luckily, some enterprising folks at the Fantasia International Film Festival got together with the Cinémathèque québécoise and got them to dust off their 35mm print of the film. Showing these kinds of movies serves a very specific purpose: they add depth and texture to a film culture that was still figuring itself out even in the mid-80s. That said, Pouvoir intime isn’t a dramedy about the middle class, or a political satire, or an Nfb documentary. It’s a no-nonsense heist movie,...

This episode was too clever by half, but that’s better than too incoherent by a billion. We get ominous conversations at the Hastings homestead, flashbacks to Hanna’s origin story with some very important blanks filled in, and a funereal fashion faux-pas. Must be Tuesday in Rosewood. 1. Spencer (last week: 3)When the time comes to list all great, manipulative, secret-hoarding, low-talking fictional families throughout history, the Hastings family shall surely earn a place in the top ten, somewhere near the Lannisters, the Dollangangers, and the Popes. Can you imagine Thanksgiving with these people? Also, I like Spencer’s bird sweater, and how she sits primly on the couch in the dark waiting for her dad to come home so she can spook him upon his arrival, just like Jason did last week. Aww, siblings. But really, Spencer could win the episode for her dialogue alone. Her words packed more...

His podcast is a hit and he’s also not shy when he does interview as well. Recently he spoke to DigitalSpy.com about a number of subjects including WWE’s decision to end The Undertaker’s win streak at WrestleMania:
“I loved it, I thought it was great. It was a legitimate shock, it got everybody talking. I think the right guy got it, if you’re going from a credibility standpoint, and if you’re going from a believability standpoint. As much as people and fans and journalists want to believe that it’s the case, I’m not sure if Undertaker had too many matches left in him. Maybe he doesn’t want to wrestle again. Maybe he knew that he couldn’t take any more.

Is killing off The Big Blue Boy Scout a good idea for the future of Superman at the cinema? Rob has a look…
The Death of Superman is a 155 page graphic novel which ties together the events of Doomsday!, an iconic Superman arc written by a mammoth 12 authors, which originally ran across several different titles in 1992.
Described on the cover as ‘the best-selling graphic novel of all time’, although Watchmen might since have nabbed that title, this arc sees Superman truly beaten to the point of death, as you might have guessed. The unstoppable force that brings this about is a seemingly mindless killing machine Doomsday, truly one of the strongest foes to ever face Superman.
In the comic, Doomsday emerges from captivity and begins ploughing a trail of destruction across America. As Superman gives a televised interview to the school children of the United States,...

Whose bright idea was it to open a posh cinema that serves meals and drinks while you watch a film?
My wife and I have a date. We're only going to a movie, but she's booked seats in a posh cinema with reclining lounge chairs, little pivoting tables and buttons to call waiters who pad silently up and down the aisles all through the film. It's more expensive than our usual excursion to the local multiplex with a stop along the way to buy chocolate from Poundland, but it makes for a convenient, one-stop evening.
"It starts at 6.45," she says, "so we should leave here by six."
"Ok," I say. "What are we seeing?"
"12 Years A Slave," she says.
A brief silence follows. "Oh," I say.
"I thought you wanted to see it," my wife says. "You said you wanted to see it."

Babies are the talk of the latest episode of Castle. Here's Laura's review...
This review contains spoilers.
6.10 The Good, The Bad, And The Baby
Let’s be clear about this: I loathe the baby-turns-tough-woman-into-marshmallow-ready-to-spawn trope. According to television, any woman, regardless of her attitudes about reproduction or degree of life-incomptaibility-with-infants, when placed in the same space as a baby, will automatically but begrudgingly bond with said baby and re-evaluate her position on said reproduction.
There are a few clear problems with this trope.
One, it happens almost exclusively to women on these shows and is based on the misogynistic belief that biology is destiny: all women are mothers or mothers-in-waiting. When we accept this premise, we are also buying into the idea that women who absolutely do not want to be mothers are less than women.
But don’t worry, because that never happens.

Strictly Come Dancing judge Bruno Tonioli has suggested that Graham Norton would be a good host if Sir Bruce Forsyth decides to step down.
Rumours about Forsyth's future on the show have been swirling for some time and the 85-year-old was forced to pull out of the show last month after being taken ill with the flu.
Tonioli has now hinted that Norton would be a good successor if Forsyth were to leave the role, telling The Sun: "The hardest thing to do is to find the right balance of characters and the person that can lead that, like Graham Norton. There are people out there that are very good at the BBC that could do a great job.
"When the time comes, the great powers above will make the decision and we subjects will have to obey."

Novak Djokovic defended his Atp World Tour Finals title against the world number one. Rafael Nadal has been in outstanding form all year but the big Serb was simply too good for him at the o2 Arena in their 39th career meeting.
Players and pundits see the end of season championship as the biggest prize after the four Grand Slams so Djokovic will be especially happy to have beaten Nadal, who confirmed his world number one status by reaching the final.
The Serb continued his excellent run of form, which has seen him take 22 straight wins, against an opponent who is never truly happy on a hard court, especially when it is indoors. Throughout the match Nadal didn’t really look in the game, with Djokovic forcing him to run the full width of the court with every rally.
Rarely could the Spaniard use his deadly forehand to great effect...
