Stephen King has never been shy about expressing his opinions, and his 2013 comments on popular YA and erotic fiction series simply proved his outspoken attitude. Sending shockwaves through the literary world and fandom, the horror genre writer surprisingly took aim at Twilight and even attacked Jennifer Lawrence’s The Hunger Games.

Criticizing Stephenie Meyer’s series, while going ballistic on Suzanne Collins’ trilogy, King also dismissed Fifty Shades of Grey. In response to an anonymous Hollywood producer pitting him against fellow actor Ryan Gosling, Glen Powell has made it clear that he will not stand for such drama.

On Tuesday, Powell acknowledged the comment with a nod to Gosling’s hit performance in the 2023 blockbuster movie, Barbie.

The “Twisters” and “Anyone But You” favorite recently took to X (formerly Twitter) to respond to a viral comment from an unnamed Hollywood producer who called Powell the biggest up-and-coming movie star in Hollywood and gave Gosling a back-handed compliment in the process.
The unnamed producer spoke to The Wrap and said that Powell is officially a movie star “in the sense that audiences now go to movies to see him.” But the comment included some Gosling shade as the producer added: “Unlike an actor like Ryan Gosling whose appeal is mostly limited to female audiences, Glen appeals to both females and males.”

Glen Powell was the hit of the summer. That winning smile, the Texas charm, the confidence mixed with dorkiness that permeated his characters in the blockbuster “Twisters,” screwball Netflix comedy “Hit Man” and traditional rom-com “Anyone but You.”
Hollywood’s no stranger to “it” stars of the moment, and each charts his or her own course that may or may not manifest the next Brad Pitt or Julia Roberts. With recent starring roles in disaster movie blockbuster Twisters, cool-as-you-like Richard Linklater joint Hit Man, and Sydney Sweeney rom-com Anyone But You, Glen Powell is one of the most instantly recognisable stars in Hollywood right now. And yet, in the first image from his upcoming co-written, co-created, and self-starring half-hour college football comedy series Chad Powers, Powell is virtually unrecognisable (and not in a Leonardo DiCaprio actually-very-recognisable Killers Of The Flower Moon way either.) “Twisters” star Glen Powell is barely recognizable in the first photo from his upcoming Hulu comedy series, “Chad Powers.”
The streamer announced Thursday that production has begun on the project, which Powell is coproducing with “Loki” executive producer and writer Michael Waldron.

Three years have gone by since it was announced that Edgar Wright was coming on board to direct a new take on the novel The Running Man, which was written by Stephen King under his Richard Bachman pen name. The Running Man was, of course, previously turned into a film back in 1987 that starred Arnold Schwarzenegger and had little to do with the source material. Earlier this year, it was announced that Glen Powell of Top Gun: Maverick, Hit Man, and Twisters is following in the footsteps of Schwarzenegger to play the lead role in the new adaptation – and during a recent interview, Powell said that, while the new film is expected to be closer to King’s writing than the first adaptation was, it will still have that “fun Edgar Wright flavor” to it.
Powell told Screen Rant that he’s preparing for The Running Man. “I have been doing a lot of sprinting.

Sydney Sweeney is one of the most talented actresses of the newer generation of actors. Being right up there with Zendaya and Florence Pugh, her performances in critically acclaimed projects like Euphoria, The White Lotus, and Immaculate truly showcase her skills in the craft. Crushing economic peril forcing otherwise sensible characters into playing potentially deadly games is an evergreen sci-fi topic — and usually, the dystopian circumstances in which the characters find themselves aren’t so difficult for us to imagine. Netflix’s Squid Game jumps off from the real crisis of personal debt in South Korea to present a 456-person, multi-round battle for a prize equivalent to $35 million Usd for whoever can outlast all their fellow contestants. Stephen King returned to the idea a couple of times: we’re only a year away from when he imagined a TV network airing The Running Man, a fight to the death only slightly more horrifying than some actual reality shows, and the spirit of The Long Walk lives on in “hands on a hard body” endurance contests. The Hunger Games features players who are drafted into participating rather than affirmatively choosing to enter, except for The Girl Who Lived,...

The majority of Stephen King's novels (and many of his short stories) have been adapted into films or TV projects over the years, but there a few outliers that have yet to make the leap from page to screen. While it seems inevitable that sooner or later, every King work (with one notable exception) will be adapted, you have to wonder why some books have yet to materialize as movies. In 2016, King was asked by Deadline if there were any books he was surprised hadn't been adapted yet, and he had an answer: "The Regulators." If you came of age in the 1990s, as I did, and were a Stephen King nerd, as I was (and still am), you know all about "The Regulators," because it wasn't a normal Stephen King release. In fact, it technically wasn't even a Stephen King book — it was attributed to King's pseudonym, Richard Bachman.

Abrams’s mysterious Warner Bros film. Plot details remain scarce, but sources say it’s a time-traveling movie with Abrams penning the script and producing.
Jenna Ortega’s star is burning bright after her sensational portrayal of Wednesday Addams in Tim Burton’s Wednesday, followed by head-turning performances in Scream VI, Finestkind, and the controversial dramedy Miller’s Girl. Ortega’s Hollywood dance card finds one studio after another courting her for their latest feature, with projects like Takia Waititi’s Klara and the Sun and Alex Scharfman’s Death of a Unicorn on the horizon. Beyond filming the sophomore season of Wednesday with Tim Burton, the duo has Beetlejuice Beetlejuice haunting theaters in September. Jenna Ortega plays Astrid in the long-gestating sequel,...

Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney may have their on-screen reunion before many fans expect it.
Edgar Wright is confirmed to direct The Running Man, with Glen Powell locked in for the lead role.
The long-awaited Stephen King adaptation is about to see Powell’s Anyone But You co-star Sydney Sweeney boarding the project for a reunion between the two fast-rising stars.
According to a report by Daniel Richtman, per MovieWeb, the Euphoria star Sweeney is wanted for the female lead in the film, which is set to begin production in London in October.
Wright will direct the film from a script he’s written with regular collaborator Michael Bacall, with the duo penning a take believed to be more in line with the original Stephen King/Richard Bachman novel.

Hollywood star Glen Powell is trading movie sets for textbooks as he returns to the University of Texas at Austin to complete his undergraduate degree.
The 35-year-old actor, known for his roles in Top Gun: Maverick and Anyone But You, is set to finish his studies in Spanish and Early American History through a combination of distance learning and occasional campus visits.
Powell, who left Ut after his freshman year to pursue acting, said that the university is accommodating his busy schedule. “They’re letting me figure it out with distance learning,” he told IndieWire. The actor plans to attend classes via Zoom and return to campus two or three times per semester for proctored exams.
The decision to complete his degree comes at a busy time for Powell, who is currently working on Edgar Wright‘s upcoming film The Running Man, an adaptation of Stephen King‘s novel. Wright...

The Glen Powell business is booming in Hollywood, and if “Twisters” does well in theaters this weekend, expect the actor’s ascension to superstardom to happen even more swiftly than it already is. “Twisters” is Powell’s last big release of 2024, but he has Ari Aster‘s “Huntington“ and Edgar Wright‘s “The Running Man” remake on the way, too.

Glen Powell is definitely the man of the hour. While he may have been in the film industry for a long time, the actor has been making his way up to the top with ease, finesse, and dedication like no other. After getting the recognition he deserves with movies like Set it Up, the actor has gone on to star in some of the best projects of recent years.

Have you got any salt handy? You may want to take a pinch of it for this one. Following recent star turns in Top Gun: Maverick, Anyone But You, Richard Linklater's Hit Man, and buzzy summer disaster movie blockbuster Twisters, it would be fair to say that Glen Powell is very hot right now. But he could be about to get hotter — quite literally. In a recent interview with CNBC posted to the broadcaster's YouTube channel, Imagine Entertainment co-founder Brian Grazer said not once, but twice, that a remake of Ron Howard's 1991 firefighting classic Backdraft is in the works, with none other than Powell set to star. Check out the interview clip below (feel free to scrub through to 1:20 and 2:20);
Now, as we say, some salt-pinching is required at this stage because neither Powell nor original Backdraft director Howard are on the record as saying this film is happening just yet.

Edgar Wright’s take on Stephen King’s 1982 novel The Running will go in front of cameras in just a couple of months, says Glen Powell, the film’s star.
Earlier this year we heard that Glen Powell had been selected to play the lead role in Edgar Wright’s take on The Running Man. It’s been over three years since the project was first announced and fans of both Wright, and Stephen King’s original 1982 novel, have had to wait patiently for news of a production date. Meanwhile, occasional news regarding Wright’s other potential projects have sometimes bubbled up, throwing into doubt whether The Running Man would even be the next film on his slate.

Glen Powell’s stock rose significantly since his turn as the traditional team antagonist in Top Gun: Maverick, which followed in the footsteps of Val Kilmer’s Iceman in the original. As he partakes in romcoms (Anyone But You), quirky character pieces (Hit Man) and the upcoming big-budget disaster film, Twisters, the last year has been quite the ride for Powell. Of the many projects he’s been announced to partake in the future, one that the star admitted he vied for was the lead in Edgar Wright’s upcoming re-adaptation of The Running Man.
IndieWire recently sat down with the star when the subject of The Running Man entered the chat. Powell stated, “It was so fun for me because I searched ‘Edgar Wright’ in my email the other day, writing ‘Edgar.’ We’ve been going back and forth on script stuff, and it’s so fun. The world...

Ron Howard is reportedly developing a sequel to the 1991 hit film Backdraft, and Glen Powell is said to be considering joining up.
Here’s an interesting story which suggests that Backdraft, the 1991 firefighting drama may be getting a sequel. Well, another sequel that is given that Universal Pictures Home Entertainment released a direct-to-video follow-up in 2019. Given that Ron Howard’s production company are involved this time though, we’d imagine that should this come to fruition, this one would be a proper bells and whistles sequel with a sizeable budget and lots of movie stars.
One movie star whose name was almost certain to pop up was that of Glen Powell.
He’s the man of the moment right now and he’s not averse to putting in a turn in legacy follow-ups either. Powell is currently appearing in Twisters, a loose follow-up to the 1996 film, Twister. He’s also...

Glen Powell, a master multitasker. The Twisters star says he’ll finish most of his university degree over Zoom while he also completes his next movie, but will head back to the University of Texas at Austin’s campus for exams.

Here’s something unique about Glen Powell. In the middle of this interview, he casually mentioned our last two interviews, which were both at decidedly different and important points in his career.
The first was in support of “Everybody Wants Some!!,” in which Powell played Finnegan, a breakout character who has it all figured out. As audience members, we all know we could never be Finnegan ourselves, but would at least consider trading a kidney for his friendship. The second was for “Top Gun: Maverick,” with Powell on the cusp of a whole new level he was pretty certain would happen. And what else is there left to say about that role? He famously lost out on the role of Rooster, but then Hangman got to basically play Han Solo, saving the day at the end.
Now, here we are with “Twisters,” where, after “Top Gun” and “Anyone but You,...

Stephen King can't stop. The best-selling horror novelist is nothing if not prolific, churning out books on a steady, unstoppable pace for decades now. For years, King said in interviews that the only days he didn't write were Christmas and on his birthday. Later, he admitted that was a lie — he wrote on those days, too. When you write that often, you produce a lot of work. But as King's career began in earnest following the publication of his debut novel "Carrie" in 1974, the publishing world had a curious rule: authors should only publish one book per year. That wasn't good enough for King — he wanted more.
"I've been asked several times if ... I thought I was overpublishing the market as Stephen King," King wrote later. "The answer is no. I didn't think I was overpublishing the market ... but my publishers did." King struck upon a solution to publish more...

When it comes to reboots of mid 80s cult sci-fi movies that we've been eagerly awaiting fresh news on, there can be only one! And it ain't Edgar Wright's The Running Man (although we are very excited for that one). No, we are of course talking about Chad Stahelski's hotly anticipated new take on Highlander, which is set to see Henry Cavill enter the swords and sorcery fray as the franchise's latest immortal hero. And, at Malta's Mediterranean Film Festival this past weekend, Stahelski revealed that his ambitious new project is set to start filming next January.
"We start shooting in January," said Stahelski in an interview with Collider's Steve Weintraub at the festival, "I go to Scotland on Monday to do the final location scout." And what's more, in the same interview Stahelski — the action master who brought us John Wick — also talked up his ambitions...

Glen Powell is having a moment. Propelled by the box office success of "Anyone But You," and its subsequent streaming domination, the most handsome man you've ever seen is slowly taking over Hollywood. His Richard Linklater-directed Netflix film "Hitman" quickly conquered the streamer's charts when it debuted in June, and Powell will soon guide us all into the eye of the suck zone with the upcoming blockbuster legacy sequel "Twisters." Soon after, Powell will face what might be his biggest test yet in Edgar Wright's upcoming adaptation of "The Running Man." But considering the man's resilience — his first film role was in the more-than 20-year-old "Spy Kids 3" — he should be up to the challenge.
It hasn't been an easy road from "Spy Kids" to leading man, however. Take "Misconduct" for instance. You've likely never heard of this 2016 legal thriller, which is probably for the best considering the...

Once he’s done with his new take on The Running Man, it looks like Edgar Wright will press ahead with directing Baby Driver 2.
Edgar Wright once upon a time expressed a little frustration about the gap that seems to crop up between his films. Yet if his current schedule shapes up the way it seems to be doing, then he’s stacking a few movies that might just get going pretty much back to back.
His next film is set to be a fresh adaptation of Stephen King’s The Running Man, which will take away Arnold Schwarzenegger and dashing yellow lycra in favour of something closer to the source text. The Running Man looks to be going in front of the cameras this year.
After that, jumping up the queue is the mooted sequel to Baby Driver, which for the sake of both convenience and bulking out the...

The sheer number of Stephen King adaptations is so overwhelming they have long become a genre of their own. Hollywood loves taking the celebrated author’s stories to big and small screens, resulting in over 100 adaptations total — but quite a few of them are tackling the same stories, remaking and rebooting each other to no avail.
The dystopian Stephen King classic is getting a remake with a Top Gun: Maverick star soon, and the actor claims it’ll be better than the Schwarzenegger-led original.
New Running Man Will Respect the King
In 1987, Arnold Schwarzenegger played the lead part in Paul Michael Glaser’s The Running Man. The movie didn’t do too poorly, but not too well, either. As an adaptation of Stephen King’s novel of the same name, it barely resembled the book.
Glen Powell became famous for his supporting role, and his acting career has only been going uphill since then.

Intro: At the time of writing this episode of Arnie Revisited, it’s just been confirmed that Hollywood is once again scouring popular IP with the upcoming reboot of The Running Man from Edgar Wright, with rising star Glen Powell attached to the project. The Top Gun: Maverick actor is certainly hot property right now, having just cosied up to Sydney Sweeney in Anyone But You. However, it was another actor, whose star was crashing through the sky in the 80s, who first took on the adaptation of Stephen King’s short story, which was written under his Richard Bachman pen name.
Arnie had just battled camouflaged alien hunters in Predator, released in June 1987, and the same year saw him take on another action sci-fi project, albeit this time with less aliens but similarly memorable action and one-liners. It was quite a departure from the original short story, but the...

Glen Powell may be blowing up thanks to roles in Top Gun: Maverick and Anyone But You, but like any other actor, he struggled on his way to the top and lost out on some major roles, including Han Solo in Solo: A Star Wars Story.
While chatting with GQ UK, Glen Powell spoke of coming “agonizingly” close to playing Han Solo, only to drop the ball at the last moment. “I can joke about it now,” he said, “[but] I blew that final audition.” The role ultimately went to Alden Ehrenreich, but with Powell’s charisma, you can see why Disney was interested in him in the first place. The actor also said he screwed up auditions for Captain America and Cowboys & Aliens over the years, but he’s accepted that it just wasn’t meant to be.

Glen Powell may have a lock on a slew of beloved 1970s and 1980s franchise reboots, but the actor almost traveled to a galaxy far, far away a decade ago.

Ansel Elgort also auditioned but it was Alden Ehrenreich who was instead cast in the lead role. The feature, directed by Ron Howard, bombed at the box office.
