Amazon MGM Studios has rounded out the cast of Oh. What. Fun., its all-star holiday comedy being directed by Michael Showalter, who is coming off the record-breaking success of the streamer’s romantic drama The Idea of You.
Jason Schwartzman, Eva Longoria, Joan Chen, Devery Jacobs, Havana Rose Liu and Maude Apatow have been added to the call sheet while Danielle Brooks has signed on for a cameo in the feature, which is currently shooting in Atlanta.
Michelle Pfeiffer is leading the ensemble that already include Felicity Jones, Chloë Grace Moretz, Denis Leary and The Holdovers breakout Dominic Sessa.
Described as both a love letter to moms and tonally a cross between Home for the Holidays and Planes, Trains and Automobiles, the story centers on a woman named Claire Clauster (Pfeiffer) who organizes a special Christmas outing, but her family forgets her in the shuffle. By the time they realize their mistake,...

Marvel debuted a new 60-second promo (check it out here) and poster for Deadpool and Wolverine earlier today when tickets went on sale, and we now have an updated synopsis for the studio's "most significant mistake to date."
We've seen a few different versions (most likely placeholders for merchandizing purposes) of this logline already, but this is by far the most unserious yet!
“Marvel Studios presents their most significant mistake to date - Deadpool & Wolverine," it reads. "A listless Wade Wilson toils away in civilian life. His days as the morally flexible mercenary, Deadpool, behind him. When his homeworld faces an existential threat, Wade must reluctantly suit-up again with an even more reluctantlier... reluctanter? Reluctantest? He must convince a reluctant Wolverine to - F*ck. Synopses are so f*cking stupid.”

After a busy couple of weeks which saw us getting almost daily Deadpool & Wolverine updates, it's been all quiet lately. Yes, there's a rumoured runtime floating around (we've heard it's inaccurate) but that's really been it.
Now, though, Marvel Studios has released a new behind-the-scenes still showing director Shawn Levy and stars Hugh Jackman (Wolverine) and Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) on the threequel's Time Variance Authority set.
Those colourful costumes pop and, yet again, there's no sign of Logan's mask. It's either only in Deadpool & Wolverine for a scene or two or it's been decided that covering Jackman's face in marketing materials isn't a wise move.
"Everyone assumed that Hugh's return was the result of me or Ryan pestering or pitching him relentlessly," Levy recently said of Jackman's return as Wolverine. "But even more miraculously, this was the result of a Hugh Jackman epiphany. He wanted to do...

With numerous films and TV series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s a daunting proposition for a newcomer to even think about getting caught up on the various characters and storylines.
But Shawn Levy, who directed the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine, says there will be no “homework” required to enjoy his film.
“I was a good student in school. I’ll do my homework as an adult. But I am definitely not looking to do homework when I go to the movies,” Levy told the Associated Press.
He added that his goal was to make the already established fans happy but also create a movie that anyone can enjoy.
“I very much made this film with certainly a healthy respect and gratitude towards the rabid fan base that has peak fluency in the mythology and lore of these characters and this world,” he said. “But I didn’t want to presume that.

There are entire generations that have no idea that Steve Martin was a stand-up comedian. They may recognize him as one-third of the trio that’s turned Only Murders in the Building into a streaming hit, or the long-suffering patriarch of the Father of the Bride movies, or maybe as that guy with the funny mustache who was in that one thing with Beyoncé (i.e. 2006 Pink Panther reboot). Some might have watched Parenthood or Planes, Trains and Automobiles with their parents when they were younger. He’s the celebrity who,...

The EFM (European Film Market) continues to heat up, with another promising project hitting the scene. Will Smith will star in the biggest-budgeted project at the show, Sugar Bandits. With a reported budget that circles $80 million, Sugar Bandits follows “a former Special Forces solider who joins an elite, vigilante squad aiming to wipe out the drug trade in Boston, but soon learns things are not what they seem.”
Sugar Bandits has sat on the Hollywood sidelines with Universal setting director Joe Carnahan on the project. However, it’s now heading to EFM, where filmmakers scope out independent projects. Sugar Bandits is based on the screenplay and novel Devils In Exile by Chuck Hogan, with Smith and Jon Mone producing through Westbrook Studios. Ryan Shimizaki oversees the project, with Stuart Ford joining the production effort through AGC Studios, which is financing the film entirely. Additionally, Richard Abate produces via 3 Arts Entertainment.

Aaron Stanford is returning to the MCU, as it was revealed in the Deadpool & Wolverine trailer released during the Superbowl on Sunday. He is reprising the role of Pyro which he portrayed in X2 and X-Men: The Last Stand.
“I’m very excited to be revisiting this role, and couldn’t think of a better place for Pyro’s resurrection than the Deadpool universe,” Standford tells Deadline in a statement.
While details as to the plot of the film have thus far been under wraps, director Shawn Levy told Deadline at last year’s Toronto Film Festival that the goal was for the film to feel “grounded” and “real” — more like “a descendant of Midnight Run, and 48 Hours, and Planes, Trains and Automobiles” than “a descendant of Airplane.”

John Hughes was the patron saint of adolescents who found great success with a series of hit comedies, most of them centering around the plight of teenagers. Yet how many of those titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at 12 of his greatest films as both a writer and director, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1950, Hughes first came to the attention of Hollywood as a writer after penning “National Lampoon’s Vacation” (1983) and “Mr. Mom” (1983). That financially successful one-two punch landed him his first directing gig: “Sixteen Candles” (1984). A tender coming-of-age story about a teenage girl (Molly Ringwald) suffering one indignity after another on her sweet sixteen firmly established him as the premiere helmer of adolescent comedies, leading to “The Breakfast Club” (1985), “Weird Science” (1985), and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” (1986).
Yet Hughes also excelled at entertainments outside the classroom, including the road trip farce “Planes, Trains & Automobiles” (1987), starring...

Updated After 9:04 Am Post…After resuming production post actors strike in November, Marvel Studios’ Deadpool 3 has wrapped per its leading man Ryan Reynolds.
“The suit hides blood. Also sweat… But today, with Deadpool wrapping, it’s mostly tears. Deadpool 3 is officially wrapping up production, and Ryan Reynolds is celebrating the occasion with a picture of his crotch! Move over, Jareth, there’s a new codpiece in town! The superhero threequel has fought an uphill battle since cameras started rolling, with unpredictable weather, Hollywood strikes, and Hugh Jackman gumming up the works. As the only Marvel Studios film releasing in 2024, a lot is riding on the Merc With a Mouth’s next round of silver-screen shenanigans.
The good news is that fans are climbing the walls for the next Deadpool movie. The sequel carries an air of mystery as Jackman’s involvement means Wade and Logan will finally lock horns on the big screen. Rumors suggest Deadpool 3 includes aspects of multiversal madness, too, leading to surprising cameos and nods to bygone eras of Marvel’s cinematic offerings. Expect the X-Men to get roasted beyond recognition, True Believers.

You know what they say about Old Man Marley, the South Bend Shovel Slayer? Back in ’58, he murdered his whole family and half the people on a suburban Chicago block with a snow shovel. He’s been hiding out there ever since, disguising the remains of his misdeeds by turning victims to mummies, and using the dust off their bones to salt our streets.
That’s what the kids in the McCallister house tell each other every cold December night when the lonely stranger played by Roberts Blossom appears outside their window. It’s of course a lie, but the truth was originally a lot more enigmatic in the early drafts of the Home Alone screenplay penned by John Hughes, who was a maestro of family and youth entertainment during the 1980s and early ‘90s.
At its inception, Home Alone was both a departure and a return to the well for Hughes.

Few filmmakers have had their finger on the pulse of the American zeitgeist better than John Hughes in the 1980s. A former advertising copywriter and the son of a Chicagoan salesman, also named John Hughes, the now legendary screenwriter and film director rose to prominence in the mid-to-late 20th century by recognizing what audiences wanted to see and hear. And sometimes what they needed to feel.
It was that gift which allowed him to transition from moonlighting as a joke writer for standups like Rodney Dangerfield to writing proper comedy films outright—and sometimes lacing them with an emotional sentimentality that, if not universally true, almost always felt authentic. The ‘80s comedies he wrote and directed, including Sixteen Candles (1984), The Breakfast Club (1985), and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986), are still watched and celebrated to this day as much for their moments of earnestness (such as when Alan Ruck demolishes his neglectful...

I remember the day — March 4, 1994 — when I learned that John Candy, big of heart and large of funny bone, had died from an apparent heart attack at age 43. I was a movie critic and a film writer in the Life section of USA Today, distracted by the Winter Olympics TV coverage of Nancy Kerrigan’s silver medal comeback. But the minute I heard that one of the warmest and funniest actors around had passed away, I poured myself immediately into writing his appreciation.
As someone who grew up in Buffalo, I was lucky to have early access to “Sctv,” the Canadian sketch-comedy counterpart to “Saturday Night Live,” long before the series was picked up by NBC. I was cued into the genius of Candy and his clowning cohorts Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Joe Flaherty, Andrea Martin, Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas as they inhabited sundry out-sized characters who worked at a fictitious television station.

It appears that we here at /Film are in collective agreement: November is the perfect month to catch up on all the spooky season stuff you didn't get around to in October. Great Thanksgiving films are few and far between, and unless you're just really into the winter holidays, it's too early to start diving into your favorite films and series about Christmas, Hanukkah, you name it. Plus, this is also the time of year when studios begin marching out their awards contenders in droves, so you've got to make room for those as well.
Case in point: For years now, November has seen Netflix roll out its first wave of serious Oscar hopefuls, and 2023 will be very much business as usual in that respect. That's not to say it's all prestige offerings and biopics for the next four weeks. For example, "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" fans will finally...

Deadpool 3 loses its May release date as the strike continues to affect the 2024 theatrical schedule
We’re hearing disappointing news concerning 20th Century Studios‘ Deadpool 3 release. According to Deadline, the highly-anticipated threequel starring Ryan Renolds and Hugh Jackman will lose its May release date because of complications related to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. Deadline says that even if the strike ends in the next few weeks, it’s almost impossible for the superhero sequel to keep its original release date. In its current state, the movie is half-finished. In other words, there’s lots more work to do on the film before it can hit its target of May 3, 2024. While the Deadpool 3 delay is a bummer, it’s understandable, given the circumstances.
According to sources, there’s a chance Captain America: Brave New World could move to an earlier date, seeing as it’s finished production. Additionally, if Deadpool 3 can’t open by July 26, 2024, it could move to November, a sweet spot for MCU success.

“Only Murders in the Building” Season 3 contains a cast of heavy hitters joining the staple trio of Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez. Each addition drives this season’s murder mystery, particularly Paul Rudd’s Ben Glenroy, whose second and certain death earns him consideration on the murder podcast.
Also entering the puzzle this season is Meryl Streep as aspiring actress Loretta Durkin, who auditions and gets cast in the role of The Nanny by Oliver himself in his new play. All her life she has been waiting to hear the words he says to her after she finishes her monologue. Amazon’s Prime Video is in negotiations to acquire a John Candy documentary from Colin Hanks and Ryan Reynolds, TheWrap has confirmed.
Hanks, son of Tom Hanks and star of “Life in Pieces,” “Orange County” and “A Friend of the Family,” will direct the project while Reynolds, star of “Deadpool,” “Free Guy” and “The Adam Project,” will produce alongside George Dewey via his Maximum Effort production company.
The documentary feature will explore John Candy’s life and career, including starring roles in “The Great Outdoors,” “Spaceballs,” “Planes, Trains and Automobiles,” “Uncle Buck” and “Cool Runnings.” The actor was on the verge of establishing himself as a comic actor who could also handle dramatic roles in weightier fare like “Only the Lonely” and Oliver Stone’s “JFK” when he died in 1994 of a heart attack at the age of 43.

The late comedian John Candy is getting the documentary treatment from Colin Hanks and Ryan Reynolds.
Amazon’s Prime Video is in negotiations to acquire an untitled film that Hanks has been quietly directing. Reynolds — who, like Candy, hails from Canada — is producing alongside George Dewey via his Maximum Effort production company.
The film will explore the life and legacy of the iconic funnyman Candy, who died of a heart attack in 1994 at the age of 43. But insiders say the film will go beyond the persona and delve into the inner life that Candy kept private off-screen. With the full support of Candy’s widow, Rose, and their two children, Jen and Chris, Hanks will utilize never-before-seen home videos, archives and interviews with the family to explore the man behind the movie star. The title of “Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project” teases galactic possibilities and plays with the notion of the unfinished work. Not the film’s labor — directors Joe Brewster and Michèle Stephenson have crafted an eloquent and engaging portrait — but that of its spiky, brilliant subject. One of the luminaries of the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s into the 1970s, the now 79-year-old Giovanni continues to address the pain and joys, the anger and resilience of the descendants of the Middle Passage, who know much about uncertain and dangerous journeys.
Giovanni was born in Knoxville, Tn, in 1943, before moving with her parents and sister to Cincinnati, Oh. During the summers as a child, she returned to Tennessee to visit her maternal grandparents. She later attended Fisk University in Nashville and currently lives in Christiansburg, Va, not far from Virginia Tech, where until recently, she was a Distinguished Professor of Writing and English.

Over his decades-spanning career, Mike Myers has crafted some of comedy's most memorable characters. You might know him most fondly as the headbanging hero Wayne of "Wayne's World," whether on "Saturday Night Live" during his '89-'95 tenure or in the celebrated movie adaptations. Perhaps you recall how he dominated the late '90s as both villain and swinging protagonist in the spy-parodic "Austin Powers" movies, and the subsequent inability to walk down the street without hearing a poorly-feigned Dr. Evil impression. Maybe ogres are your bag, making Myers' turn as an unrefined Scottish mean green machine Shrek the zenith of his talents. Or perhaps the name is fairly new for emergent comedy fans, the product of stumbling upon the cult-centric laugh-fest "The Pentaverate" on Netflix. Myers' influence on comedy is well-established, but what influences the influencer?

"This movie could never be made today" is an increasingly familiar refrain in our fractious times. As our society grows more diverse, and we reckon with the racism and sexism of less enlightened eras, some crotchety members of the old guard have a tendency to throw up their hands and lament that an assortment of classic films with perceived problematic content would never make it past development in modern Hollywood.
In certain, screamingly obvious cases, this is a very good thing. D.W. Griffith's "The Birth of a Nation," a virulently racist movie that celebrates the Ku Klux Klan's heroic lynching of a freed slave would be a one-way ticket to infamy (or a three-picture deal with The Daily Wire). The mere notion of Walt Disney's "Song of the South" would probably result in the creator being ousted from his own company (and maybe offered a gig as the chief...

John Candy may no longer be with us, but he's still Canada's national treasure. Amongst his raunchy '80s peers, the Second City comedy alumnus had a gift. His warmth never failed to give us a smile when he appeared on-screen. His best films built on that endlessly loving part of Candy, turning him into an honorary family member, a silly babysitter for our darker days.
Despite his comedy prowess, his dramatic roles made us look at him in a new light. When he died in 1994 at 43, we lost decades of potential work where we could have deepened his craft. As a Canadian whose vibrant attitude borrows from the best in Candy, Ryan Reynolds understands what Candy means to all of us. Reynolds' production company is working on a documentary on Candy's life and legacy. For now, we have Candy's movies to remember him by when we miss his infectious laugh.

Drew Barrymore flexed her producing powers at the turn of the century when she adapted the popular 70s primetime series Charlie’s Angels into an action comedy starring her and Cameron Diaz. The movie became a blockbuster hit and spawned a sequel. Although Barrymore had recently situated herself on television as the host of her own daytime talk show, she recently revealed a desire to make another adaptation with Diaz.
According to IndieWire, when close friend Adam Sandler made an appearance as a guest on her show when she spoke about reuniting with Diaz for a remake of the John Hughes Thanksgiving classic, Planes, Trains and Automobiles. She revealed that she wants to play the Del Griffith role, played by John Candy. However, either Diaz or Sandler could be the Steve Martin character.

Drew Barrymore may be reuniting with Cameron Diaz onscreen.
The daytime talk show host told her longtime friend and co-star Adam Sandler that she has been discussing a “Planes, Trains, and Automobiles” remake with Diaz. And while Barrymore has her sights set on playing the role of an overbearing salesman originated by late star John Candy, the Steve Martin marketing executive character is still up for grabs between Diaz and Sandler.

“You could do a good Candy,” Sandler responded. “You know who could do Candy the best? [Chris] Farley. He would walk around the office and say lines from ‘Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.'”

“Planes, Trains and Automobiles” may be an unlikely choice for a 4K transfer, but the new 35th anniversary Blu-ray for Paramount’s John Hughes comedy classic is a must-own for one very good reason: it contains 75 minutes of never-before-seen deleted and extended scenes.

Another Blu-ray column is upon us, here in the wake of our Thanksgiving feasts. If you're somehow still feeling the turkey day hangover, maybe just sit back and take in this list of new Blu-ray releases. It requires very little effort! Just move your eyeballs. This latest Blu-ray round-up is pretty stacked, featuring a 4K release of "Reservoir Dogs," a new release of "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" featuring long-lost footage, the massive Sony Pictures Classics 30th Anniversary 4K Ultra HD Collection, and more.
Reservoir Dogs 4K
Quentin Tarantino burst on the scene with "Reservoir Dogs," and he's either been thrilling or annoying people ever since. The story of a group of well-dressed thieves who turn on each other makes great use of dialogue and a few locations, and it's stood the test of time. Is it Tarantino's best? Absolutely not — he only got better. But the impact of "Reservoir Dogs" cannot be denied.

Ad-libbing is an art relished by many of the great comedy actors of our time, like Steve Martin, the late John Candy, and Robin Williams, just to name a few. It helps actors add their own unique flavor to their respective roles, which makes for more authentic and natural performances. The downside is that capturing actors' off-the-cuff quips can cause complications on set, as was the case with Martin and Candy on the holiday classic "Planes, Trains and Automobiles." Another example can be found in yet another holiday classic: 1988's "Scrooged."
In the movie, which is a modern update to Charles Dickens' 1983 novella "A Christmas Carol," Bill Murray plays Frank Cross, a young Ebenezer Scrooge-like TV executive who is ironically the showrunner of an upcoming live production of "A Christmas Carol." Before the show, he is visited by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future. They respectively show him his evil origin story,...

The 1988 Christmas fantasy film "Scrooged" takes us on a wild and dark ride with Frank Cross, a mean-spirited, anti-Christmas TV executive who oversees a live production of -- guess what? -- "A Christmas Carol," the classic Charles Dickens novella that the movie itself is based on. "Scrooged" itself is, in some ways, one of those overlooked holiday movies. If one were to ask its star, Bill Murray, why that is, he might single out the way the movie was shot as the reason it hasn't caught on with a larger audience.
A real-life Scrooge, Frank (Murray) loudly berates his subordinates -- and when I say loudly, I mean loudly. He forces a single mother (who has to run her mute son to the doctor) to work overtime, fires a guy who dares to critique his random and absurdly violent commercial that has absolutely nothing to do with "A Christmas Carol,...

In the classic Holiday comedy "Elf," Buddy (Will Ferrell), a human raised as a Christmas elf on the North Pole, returns to New York City to find his father. A fish out of water, Buddy fails to understand America's holiday traditions. Naturally, his ignorance gets him in a lot of trouble, including into a fight with a mall Santa, played by Artie Lange. According to Lange and director Jon Favreau, that scene had to be shot in only one take.
Buddy inadvertently lands a job at a Gimbels department store working as an elf. To his dismay, he discovers the mall Santa is not the one he grew up with on the North Pole. "He's an imposter!" Buddy yells to the crowd of children lined up to sit on Santa's lap. The mall Santa tackles Buddy into a Christmas tree and decorations, chases him, and swings a metal stanchion at him.

Pack your bags, hold onto your designer shower curtain rings, and don’t forget your passport because we’re about to travel back to 1987 for a look back on John Hughes‘ Planes, Trains and Automobiles. This legendary and heartfelt comedy stars Steve Martin and John Candy as Neal Page and Del Griffith, respectively. The story revolves around a Chicago advertising man’s (Martin) struggle to travel home from New York for Thanksgiving, with a lovable oaf of a shower curtain ring salesman (Candy) as his only company.
Viewed by many as a departure for Hughes, Planes, Trains and Automobiles shines thanks to Martin and Candy’s outstanding chemistry as two comedic titans trading blows throughout the misadventure. Oddly, early test screenings pegged the film as a misfire, with audiences saying both characters were unlikable. After returning to the drawing board and introducing new plot elements, Hughes established the perfect balance for the odd couple.

Just in time to take home for the Thanksgiving holiday, an updated version of the classic film Planes, Trains and Automobiles is being rereleased with more than an hour of additional footage.
The Steve Martin and John Candy comedy is now on 4K Ultra HD and includes a bonus “lost luggage” Blu-ray disc with recently found deleted and extended scenes from director John Hughes’ archives.
The film details the struggles of Martin and Candy to get home to Chicago after their plane is rerouted to Wichita, Kansas. Hilarity ensues, capped by a touching final scene
The bonus Blu-Ray disc also features Dylan Baker’s audition for the character of Owen, who provides a ride in his orange pickup truck, as well as a tribute to the late John Candy and a two-part documentary about director John Hughes.

"What he really wanted was to spend Thanksgiving with his family. What he got was three days with the turkey."
The tagline of "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" promises laughs, and writer-director-producer John Hughes delivers plenty in its snappy 97-minute runtime. Though his 1987 feature is a comedy, Hughes was diverging from the wry humor of his early National Lampoon days and earnest teen-centric comedies like "Sixteen Candles."
It would star Steve Martin as the uptight marketing exec Neal Page, whose journey from NYC back home to Chicago is disrupted, and ultimately enriched, by John Candy's heart-of-gold salesman — and tagline "turkey" — Del Griffith. What should be a cab and a flight home in time for Thanksgiving turns into a three-day trek that rivals Lope de Aguirre's odyssey of folly, except instead of the Amazonian landscape, the unforgiving travel routes of northeast U.S.A. threaten the hero's ambitions at every turn.

Hollywood has traditionally overlooked Thanksgiving in favor of literally any other holiday. Christmas has thousands of movies, Halloween has hundreds, and Thanksgiving has about two (all numbers rough estimates). Which is a pity! The best Thanksgiving movie, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, is also the best holiday movie. It is a lean, 90-minute film about two men yearning for home. Unconstrained by the tinselly pomp that is de rigueur for the holiday genre, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles is at turns side-splittingly funny and throat-tighteningly sad. It’s a masterpiece.
If you’re not already familiar with the film, it stars Steve Martin as Neal Page, an advertising executive trying to get home for Thanksgiving. He encounters Del Griffith (John Candy) early in his journey, and the men end up traveling companions, by circumstance and eventually by necessity. The film is about how the concept of ‘home’ takes on an almost mythical allure at the holidays,...

Even though it’s now 35 years old, John Hughes‘ 1987 film “Planes, Trains, And Automobiles” remains a classic comedy and maybe the best Thanksgiving movie ever made. It may even be Hughes’ most beloved film, too: a controversial pick, but certainly in the running. Now, in the lead-up to Turkey Day, Vanity Fair wants fans of the film to check out a long-lost deleted scene from the film that sees John Candy and Steve Martin at the height of their odd-couple chemistry.

It’s Thanksgiving time, and one of the most beloved Thanksgiving movies comes from none other than 80s comedy maestro John Hughes, with the turkey holiday classic, Planes, Trains & Automobiles. The buddy comedy is a classic tale of a journey to be home in time for Thanksgiving dinner, but with travel being so tumultuous around this time, our star, Steve Martin, finds himself stalled and dragging along an unwelcomed companion with John Candy in one of his most famous roles.
Entertainment Weekly reports on the newest remastered release of Planes, Trains & Automobiles in glorious ultra HD 4K quality. One of the coolest, exclusive features for this release is the unveiling of never-before-seen deleted scenes revealing extended performances from the comedy duo. Deleted scenes aren’t anything new for classic releases. However, this set features an entire hour of deleted and extended scenes that were uncovered from John Hughes...
