Exclusive: Johnny Depp’s London-based film company In.2 is adding a new string to its bow with the release this Friday of French historical drama Jeanne du Barry.
Starring Depp as Louis Xv opposite French actress and director Maïwenn in the titular role, the picture opened the Cannes Film Festival last year.
As per Cannes’ stipulation for opening films, it released theatrically in France the same day, enjoying a successful run for distributor Le Pacte with the highest French gross for a Cannes opener since The Great Gatsby in 2013.
In.2 will release the movie on 70 screens on April 19 across the UK in a campaign spearheaded by Head of Production Stephen Malit.
The UK release will be followed by the U.S. launch by Vertical Entertainment on May 2, which has confirmed 600 theatres so far.

These unflinching documentaries, indie thrillers and anime fables can help us to understand the climate emergency, and how to respond
We are rapidly becoming the all-star cast of the biggest disaster movie of all time, and tragically it’s a global success. Towering infernos blaze over Canada, the Canaries and Rhodes, Bangladesh, China and even northern England have had their own devastating Poseidon adventures while the whole world continues to reel in the socioeconomic chaos of the Covid contagion and in fear of an H1N1 outbreak. Only the dramatic effects are no longer computer-generated, they are real, and people are really dying.
I went to the Odeon in the 1970s and was terrified and wowed by the disaster film genre. Since the late 1980s I’ve been watching the real world’s climate effects department ramp up its protests to our wholesale inactivity and disregard for the science that says,...

The Sex Pistols were a mythical band. Steve Jones couldn’t play guitar. Johnny Rotten couldn’t sing. Sid Vicious couldn’t always stand upright, much less keep his spiky hair on end. Malcom McLaren couldn’t manage. With Glen Matlock and Paul Cook rounding out the band, the personnel are just the stencils for McLaren’s silk screen. Danny Boyle’s Pistol, coming to FX on Hulu, perpetuates the mythology. This is probably part of the reason John Lydon didn’t sign off on the project. He likes to keep his public image limited. It also might be a little melodramatic for the former Sex Pistols frontman. That works for TV more than it does for punks.
Based on Jones’ memoir Lonely Boy: Tales from a Sex Pistol, the six-episode miniseries tells the story of the forgotten generation of London’s punk culture through the eyes of their most fabricated spokespeople: The Sex Pistols,...

This article contains Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness spoilers.
Marvel Studios is in absurdly fine financial shape. It seems odd to state that out loud, but given the “sky is falling” pieces running lately, it feels pertinent to remind folks of this fact. Their latest film, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, has grossed 700 million worldwide to date while being in theaters for less than two weeks. It will certainly cross 800 million. Considering the first Doctor Strange tapped out at 677 million worldwide, and opened at less than half what the sequel did, this is a commercial win for a studio that can still demonstrate audience-brand loyalty to a stunning degree.
Perhaps then it is the envy of that loyalty—and the fact that studios have spent most of the last decade attempting to emulate it to mixed results—which speaks to the real doom and gloom write-ups circling Doctor Strange 2’s reception.

Peter Jackson’s The Beatles: Get Back – The Rooftop Concert is heading back to Imax after a one-day, single-show screening last Sunday — the 52nd anniversary of the band’s iconic 1969 concert. The show and live Q&a with Jackson beamed directly to theaters had its share of sellouts, with audio and visuals about as close as possible to actually joining the band on the roof of their Apple Corps headquarters at 3 Savile Row. Disney and Imax are presenting it again February 9 at 75-80 locations, then on 200 screens starting February 11 through the weekend.
(The concert is also included in its entirety in Jackson’s six-part doc series The Beatles: Get Back, which hit Disney+ last fall. Click video above to play an exclusive clip.)
The film is one of of trio of music documentaries including New Worlds: The Cradle of Civilization and Poly Styrene: I Am A Cliché in theaters this weekend.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline was hard to keep track of before a universe-changing event occurred in Avengers: Endgame, prompting the main chronology of the series to skip five years ahead mid-movie. Now we’re on the other side of “the Blip,” and the five-year time jump it prompted, but what does that mean for the latest MCU movies and TV shows, including Spider-Man: No Way Home? Let’s break it down, year by year.
MCU: 2018
Endgame begins in 2018, not too long after the events of Infinity War where half the universe was “blipped” out of existence with a snap of Thanos’ fingers.
MCU: 2019-2022
While we have gotten some glimpses into life in the MCU during the Blip, for the most part, none of the MCU stories take place during this time. Many have compared this fictional period to the real-life experience of living during a pandemic, especially during...

If ever there was a book I was guaranteed to review, it was this one. I cannot put into words how much I love the original Superman film, and the Christopher Reeve version of both Kal-El and Clark Kent. I first saw it as a young kid and was absolutely mesmerised by it. I have watched it literally hundreds of times down the years. Reviewing this book was an obvious slam dunk. Why Superman ’78 though? Those nostalgia dollars. DC have put out a few of these nostalgia fest books, Adam West’s Batman and Linda Carter’s Wonder Woman notably, and all have been hugely entertaining. There’s clearly a huge audience for these books, one of which is typing this. Superman ’78 though is the big one. The film literally changed superhero movies and DC Comics with its release,...

Still theorizing about every little thing you saw in “WandaVision” potentially being an Easter Egg? Same. The Emmy-nominated series has wrapped up, but there are definitely episodes that still have some fans puzzled, and the great thing about streaming is that you can always go back and re-watch episodes.
The first Marvel series for Disney+ follows Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff (aka Scarlet Witch) and Paul Bettany’s Vision (aka the humanoid super-computer who seemingly died in “Avengers: Infinity War”) living in wedded, suburban sitcom bliss through the decades. And while aficionados know all about the characters’ comic book pasts, casual Marvel Cinematic Universe viewers might not.

Exclusive: Wanda Sykes has been tapped for a recurring role in the upcoming fifth season of Robert and Michelle King’s legal drama The Good Fight on Paramount+.

There was a definitive answer given to the idea of a WandaVision season 2, and it was a no, but Kevin Feige has decided to weigh in on this decision and has been a little vague, but purposefully so since it’s been mentioned that Wanda will be showing up in various other places throughout the MCU as Phase 4 continues on. This is a little more uplifting than simply saying that there won’t be another season at all, but it’s also a good indication that if there is another season that it won’t be something that will be a high

Bryan Fuller’s cult hit series Hannibal is a spectacular take on the world of Hannibal Lecter—and it’s leaving Netflix next week.
“Hannibal follows behavioral psychologist Will Graham (Dancy), who’s brought in by the FBI to assist with tracking down serial killers. To keep his fragile psyche in check, he’s assigned to regular sessions with Dr. Lecter (Mikkelsen), a forensic psychologist. Any self-respecting movie buff knows Lecter better as Hannibal the Cannibal, but Will is none the wiser as he endeavors to track down another killer, called the Chesapeake Ripper.”

The long and short of why Doctor Strange wasn’t in WandaVision, after a lot of words that weren’t really needed, is that the desire to keep the focus on Wanda and not shift it over to Doctor Strange. It’s not a bad reason to be certain since Stephen Strange is bound to become a bigger name in the MCU moving forward, but it was still a bit of a disappointment in a series that continued to hype up certain moments only to let the fans down. WandaVision was a lot of fun, there’s no doubt of that, but there were

This past week I happily immersed myself in the latest book by protean film critic/biographer/sometime novelist David Thomson, A Light in the Dark: A History of Movie Directors. Even as he approaches 80, the author of the invaluable Biographical Dictionary of Film editions is able to find fresh things to say about such cinematic imperishables as Hitchcock, Welles, Lang, Renoir, Bunuel, Hawks, Godard and Nicholas Ray.
Midway through the new tome, Thomson delivers his most unexpected and welcome piece, a savory appreciation of a director who, almost defiantly, is not an auteur and therefore remains somewhat taken for granted, far too much so, despite having made any number of notable films of considerable class and merit. That would be Stephen Frears, who himself will turn 80 in June.
Like such Hollywood non-auteurs as Michael Curtiz, Raoul Walsh, Don Siegel, Henry Hathaway, Richard Fleischer and any number of others, Frears is not a writer.

However, on April 19 the cable network announced the contenders for the 2021 ceremony, which will air on two nights: May 16 for scripted entertainment and May 17 for reality programming. Scroll down for the full list of scripted contenders.
Disney+’s “WandaVision” leads the way with five nominations: Best Show, Best Performance in a Show (Elizabeth Olsen), Best Hero (Teyonah Parris), Best Villain (Kathryn Hahn), and Best Fight (Wanda vs. Agatha) — alas, no love for Paul Bettany as Vision. Its rivals for Best Show are a trio of Netflix offerings — “Bridgerton,” “Cobra Kai,” and “Emily and Paris” — along with Amazon’s dark superhero satire “The Boys.”

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you haven’t seen “The Series Finale,” the ninth and final episode of “WandaVision” on Disney Plus.
From their very first meeting about “WandaVision” to shooting the final scene of the game-changing Marvel Studios series for Disney Plus, actor Elizabeth Olsen and head writer and executive producer Jac Schaeffer have spent countless hours together crafting the story of how Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff grieved the death of Paul Bettany’s Vision. But when Olsen and Schaeffer recently joined Variety over Zoom to talk about the show, it had been many months since they had actually seen each other.
“It’s good to see you Lizzie!” Schaeffer said, using Olsen’s preferred nickname. “I was really looking forward to this, because I felt very solitary, in a bubble with all the press.”
Schaeffer and Olsen certainly know uncommon bubbles within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. On “WandaVision,...

It’s gonna be a gas!
Marvel fans were treated this morning to a mid-season trailer of the trippy, time-hopping Disney Plus original “WandaVision,” a blend of sitcom tropes through the decades and Marvel Comics lore all wrapped up in a not-so-neat (or linear) story centered on Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany). Though the 90-second spot doesn’t reveal much to solve the series’ many puzzles, it does showcase a couple of new scenes, namely of S.W.O.R.D. agent Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) in the present, nosy neighbor Agnes (Kathryn Hahn) in the ’80s, and Wanda and Vision in later television eras. The trailer also shows scenes from the first couple of episodes, including clips of Doctor Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings) and Jimmy Woo (Randall Park) trying to solve the broadcast case.
“WandaVision” was the first Marvel Studios original to debut exclusively on Disney Plus.

Welcome to Rolling Stone‘s weekly coverage of Disney+’s WandaVision. I reviewed the series yesterday, and have specific, spoiler-filled thoughts on the first two episodes, coming up just as we decide if gum is food…
After that review published, several readers asked how much knowledge they needed of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to follow this show. Knowledge of, and affection for, Nick at Nite, I told them, would probably be way more valuable than remembering which side Wanda and Vision were on in Captain America: Civil War.

“WandaVision,” the first of several live-action series coming to Disney+ as part of Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, makes its long-awaited debut on the streaming service on Friday after being delayed, like so much else, by the pandemic. Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany are reprising their roles as Wanda Maximoff, aka Scarlet Witch, and Vision, respectively, which is interesting in that the latter, an android created during “Avengers: Age of Ultron” (2015), initially bit it at the end of “Avengers: Infinity War” (2018). Of course, we all thought Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes died in “Captain America: The First Avenger” (2011) too, and look what happened there.
When the show premieres, Wanda and Vision are in a period of domestic bliss, living in an idyllic, suburban town known as Westview. But all is not what it seems, and it soon becomes apparent that something is very, very wrong. The trailers for the...

Given the phrase “Marvel Cinematic Universe TV show,” your mind probably doesn’t conjure up anything that looks like “WandaVision,” the first episodic series from Marvel Studios. After two dozen movies teeming with chiseled heroes, bombastic violence and swelling orchestras signaling some catastrophic twist, “WandaVision” throws Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany), two of the MCU’s most powerful and tragic characters, into the jarringly low-stakes world of a picture-perfect sitcom neighborhood circa 1950-something. Gone are the sprawling military bases, high tech galactic speedsters and far flung corners of the Earth that acted as backdrops for the Avengers’ latest battles. Instead, Wanda and Vision have to bumble their way through a series of classic sitcom storylines without their nosy neighbors realizing that they’re living next to a witch and the walking, talking personification of the galaxy’s most powerful AI. There’s no explanation for why Wanda...

Spoiler Warning: This piece contains spoilers about Disney+’s upcoming Marvel series WandaVision.
Something strange is a foot in suburbia, and that’s the thread which Disney+’s upcoming Marvel series WandaVision tugs on.
While Marvel has traversed the streaming space before with a number of Netflix series, i.e. The Punisher, Jessica Jones, The Defenders, Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist, what makes WandaVision notable is that it’s the first streaming series to employ Marvel Cinematic Universe characters as protagonists, specifically Scarlet Witch aka Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and b.f. Vision (Paul Bettany). WandaVision drops its first episode this Friday, Jan. 15. While the Netflix Marvel shows dropped an entire season at a time, McU Boss Kevin Feige is stoked by the ongoing fan discussions which are spurred over the series’ longer run given its weekly episode release.

A new TV spot for the highly anticipated Disney+ series “WandaVision” dropped on Monday featuring an original theme song by Oscar-winning songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, the latter of whom is an Egot recipient. In keeping with the show’s throwback aesthetic to the sitcoms of yesteryear, the song is a clear homage to comedies of the ’50s and ’60s, with a chorus cheerfully crooning, “Oh, a newlywed couple just moved to town, a regular husband and wife.” Watch the one-minute trailer above.
The songwriting duo, known for penning the catchy tunes for both “Frozen” films and “Coco,” are proving their versatility by writing songs that reflect multiple decades, all the way up to the 2000s. “‘WandaVision’ is such a cool, strange, one-of-a-kind project,” says Lopez in a new statement. “We loved the bright feeling of American sitcoms mixed with the deep sense of unease the story had, and...

As moviegoers hurried into the Cineworld Leicester Square cinema in London on Thursday evening, eager to catch final screenings before what could be a six-month closure, some staff couldn’t believe the beeline of customers before them.
“I wasn’t expecting all these people,” says one slightly stunned front-of-house employee from behind a mask, glancing nervously over his shoulder. Staff have received strict instructions not to speak to press, and most comply, fearful that doing so will affect any potential redundancy pay.
It’s been just over five days since most Cineworld employees discovered, via social media, that their jobs were at risk as the company planned to temporarily shutter all U.K. and U.S. cinemas, affecting some 45,000 jobs. For the 5,500 impacted in the U.K., there’s little clarity on prospects after the credits roll on tonight’s final screening. New reports indicate that some salaried and contracted...

It looks like WandaVision will take Vision and Scarlet Witch from 1950s domestic bliss to Brady Bunch and Roseanne style sitcom homages.
Just under a year out from the release date of Disney+’s Marvel series WandaVision, we still don’t have a full idea of what the gosh darn thing is about.
We know that the show will continue the adventures of Avengers Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) a.k.a. Scarlet Witch and The Vision (Paul Bettany). We also know, thanks to some stylish promo photos that show the couple in ‘50s style domestic bliss, that it will likely borrow liberally from Tom King’s speculative comic series Vision. The speculative fiction nature of the series would make some sense given the fact that The Vision is dead in the Avenger films continuity.
Now a new Marvel teaser released by Disney+ during this year’s Super Bowl offers up even more clues.

I don’t know if you’re anything like me, but I can often spend hours upon hours trawling through iTunes looking for new movies to buy… Usually I’ll randomly come across a title I haven’t seen in years and use the “Cast & Crew” links to make my way down the rabbit hole to the more obscure side of Apple’s digital movie service.

Some of which have been made available in the UK for the first time since VHS and a Lot that have been added to the service in their original uncut form!

We live in a wholly different landscape from as recent as ten years back. Back then, most of a film’s box office gross came from North America. And why not? Most of the Hollywood fare appealed to the Americas, so why wouldn’t they be the main market? Nowadays, the world has gotten smaller, and with it, Hollywood is able to make a pretty penny overseas. The biggest overseas market that’s really starting to come into its own is China.
According to THR, last year, China spent the equivalent of $6.78 billion on box office tickets, which is a crazy increase of almost 48.7% when compared to 2014. Additionally, according to The Economist, the country is opening more than 20 new theaters a day. This, of course, is no real accident. How would you program this year's newest, most interesting films into double features with movies of the past you saw in 2014?
Looking back over the year at what films moved and impressed us, it is clear that watching old films is a crucial part of making new films meaningful. Thus, the annual tradition of our end of year poll, which calls upon our writers to pick both a new and an old film: they were challenged to choose a new film they saw in 2014—in theatres or at a festival—and creatively pair it with an old film they also saw in 2014 to create a unique double feature.
All the contributors were given the option to write some text explaining their 2014 fantasy double feature. What's more, each writer was given the option to list more pairings, with or without explanation, as further imaginative film programming we'd be lucky to catch...

Earlier today (Aug 19th) one of my all-time favourite directors, Albert Pyun, announced via his Facebook and Twitter pages that he would be stepping away from movie-making and all that it ensues, due to health reasons… He’s since expanded on the problems with his health in a further post on his Facebook page, that I urge everyone whose ever enjoyed an Albert Pyun movie to read.
Hi Everyone – sadly I’m going to have to shutdown my facebook and other movie related efforts including Director’s cuts attending film festivals and screenings due to my health issue. I have to take the time to address this condition as its a long term but not life threatening. I’ve had some heart issues but through Cynthia, that was being stabilized and in control. But this new one is not as dangerous but far more widespread across my entire body and...

People's critic digs Pacific Rim's robots, but wishes they could take out Grown Ups 2 along with the aliens. Skip this like it's cafeteria mystery meat• Grown Ups 2 The opening scene of Grown Ups 2 features a deer urinating into Adam Sandler's mouth. That's rich, given that he's the one who thinks you'll swallow anything. This pathetic sequel to the bewilderingly successful 2010 Grown Ups finds Sandler's Lenny Feder back in his hometown, living near old buddies Eric (Kevin James), Kurt (Chris Rock) and Marcus (David Spade) - but not too near, since Lenny is way richer than those guys.
