In the world of reboots, remakes, revivals, sequels, prequels, and the like, are endgames really endgames anymore?
Think about it.
Every television season nowadays, old shows are revamped and reworked to entice both an old audience and a newer one to indulge in a new set of stories set in a familiar world.

From Saved by the Bell to Gossip Girls to Raven’s Home to And Just Like That… to Night Court to That 90’s show and to Frasier — the list of shows that are changing “endgame” couples goes on and on.
Beloved sitcoms and dramas are returning to the screens with a plethora of new stories to tell, and for the most part, it’s exciting. A continuation of something you once loved so dearly can never be a bad thing, right?

When they joined the NBC-turned-Upn sitcom In the House, LL Cool J was a hip-hop star just starting his acting career. Alfonso Ribeiro was coming off his fan-favorite Fresh Prince of Bel-Air role. And Debbie Allen had the most comprehensive television experience of the bunch, having earned eight Emmy nominations for choreographing and starring in the TV show Fame. In the early 1990s, Allen was focusing on directing and producing shows like A Different World. It was famed record and film producer Quincy Jones who convinced her to return to acting. “He’d been trying to get me back in front of the camera for about four years,” Allen told the Los Angeles Times in 1995. “I told him, when you get a script that makes sense, about a woman who is on a certain level, we have something to talk about.” That project was In the House,...

Image Source Amazon You can add A Different World to the list of old shows that are getting a new generational reboot. Just as Frasier, The Conners (formerly Roseanne), Will & Grace, and Quantum Leap all returned more than a decade after their original finales, there are reports that Netflix is working on a new version of A Different World, focusing on the child of two original characters — Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne — as she spends her college years at her parents’ alma mater, Hillman College. Though it hasn’t been determined whether Jasmine Guy (who played Whitley) will be part of the new show, it wouldn’t surprise us to see her join the cast. We’ve spoken to her many times over the years about the show, and she’s always expressed a great deal of pride about her time on A Different World and what the show meant to so many people.

There are people who’ll tell you that Japanese folklore fantasy Monkey airing at 6pm on Friday nights in the 1980s was the highpoint of post-school, pre-bedtime TV scheduling in the UK. Let’s not tell them that they’re wrong; let’s just pity them for having mistimed their childhood by a decade.

As long as there was no Wimbledon, snooker, cricket, athletics or Horse of the Year Show, that’s where anyone too young to go to the pub found joy. Let’s dream the crow black dream. I’m Niki Minter and this week on the Eric Draven files, we have The Crow: Stairway to Heaven. This is the first time we have a series that I feel lukewarm about. However, this is one that does have its fans and there’s a reason, aside from the upcoming reimagining, that we’re discussing it. This should be a fun time.
Okay, so, I caught Stairway on the Sci-Fi channel a few times here and there during its initial run. It caught my interest but never enough to start it from the beginning. What’s interesting about this is that it’s based on the 1994 movie adaptation which was pulled from James O’Barr’s original comic. Mark Dacascos would be the one and only person ever to fill the role once held by Brandon Lee. This is an interesting take, right?...

When Variety broke down the 100 greatest TV shows of all time late last year, 12 creators were invited to discuss the series that inspired them. Among those welcomed was Lena Waithe, who didn’t waste a beat to credit “The Cosby Show” spinoff, “A Different World,” for sparking her early interest and getting her creative juices flowing.
“When it came time to name my production company, Hillman Grad just felt right,” Waithe says of the fictional college in the sitcom. “It represented a lot about who I was and how ‘A Different World’ was so inspirational to me as a writer, as a kid, as a person. It just made sense.” On June 29, Waithe will be honored with the Variety Creative Conscience Award at the 48th San Francisco International LGBTQ+ Film Festival (Frameline48) for her work and for helping directors tell their stories.

Criminal: John Hawkes, Pat Healy, & more join Charlie Hunnam in Prime Video’s Ed Brubaker adaptation
John Hawkes has been one of my favorite character actors since he first came to my attention back in the ’90s with roles in films like Roadracers, Night of the Scarecrow, From Dusk Till Dawn, and I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, so it’s cool to hear (from Deadline) that he’s going directly from a multi-episode role in the latest season of True Detective to landing a recurring role in the Prime Video series adaptation of Criminal, the Eisner Award-winning graphic novel series written by Ed Brubaker and illustrated by Sean Phillips. Hawkes, along with Pat Healy (Better Call Saul), Taylor Selé (Bmf), and Logan Browning (Dear White People), join previously announced cast members Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy), Adria Arjona (Hit Man), Richard Jenkins (The Shape of Water), and Kadeem Hardison (A Different World).

The former Sons of Anarchy star is set to play the lead in Prime Video’s highly anticipated Criminal, which is based on a series of graphic novels by Ed Brubaker. The series returns Hunnam to the world of organized crime, a genre that’s paid nice dividends for him in between Sons of Anarchy and The Gentlemen. According to Deadline, Hunnam is set to play the lead, “Leo, a brilliant master thief who sees all the angles, and specializes in plans with no guns and no violence. Like a chess player, Leo thinks three moves ahead. Exclusive: Kadeem Hardison has been set as a series regular in Ed Brubaker’s Prime Video graphic novel series Criminal. He joins the previously announced cast Adria Arjona and Richard Jenkins.
Criminal is an interlocking universe of crime stories based on the multi-Eisner Award-winning graphic novel series created by Brubaker and Sean Phillips.
Hardison will portray the character Gnarly, an old friend of Leo and Ivan. Gnarly was his nickname as a boxer back in the 1970s and it’s all anyone calls him. He walks with a limp, an old one. Gnarly’s a local legend, and he can go from warm to fierce in a heartbeat. He commands respect, partly because he can inflict massive physical damage, even at his advanced age — and partly because he has the authority and gravitas to stop other men in their tracks.

Taking cues from The Cosby Show’s iconic spinoff A Different World but updated for some 30 years later, Grown-ish, the Black-ish spawn premiered on Freeform in January 2018 by following Yara Shahidi’s Zoey Johnson, Dre (Anthony Anderson) and Bow’s (Tracee Ellis Ross) firstborn, to college. Similar to its predecessor, Grown-ish tackled many controversial topics, including university investment in the prison system, drug use, pre-nil exploitation of college athletes, sex, the value of college and more, but did so with a fresh voice and perspective.
Zoey’s college world included her competing love interests — woke Black campus activist Aaron (Trevor Jackson) and ultimate hipster Luca (Luka Sabbat) — as well as Latina Republican Ana (Francia Raìsa), Jewish rebel Nomi (Emily Arlook), first-generation Indian American and all-around hustler Vivek (Jordan Buhat), Olympic-bound South Los Angeles track stars Jazz and Sky (sisters Chloe and Halle Bailey, who perform the show’s theme song) and later,...

Kenya Barris was deeply inspired by “The Cosby Show” when he created “Black-ish” in 2014. The writer and executive producer wanted to create a similarly beloved family sitcom that was expressly Black, not only with the characters, but also in the subject matter the show covered. That mission was achieved, and like “The Cosby Show,” “Black-ish” went on to spawn a TV universe that would also make an impact.
“Grown-ish” was the first “Black-ish” spinoff. It has now gone six seasons and will air its 100th episode this month. Similar to “A Different World” with Lisa Bonet’s Denise Huxtable from “The Cosby Show,” “grown-ish” has chronicled the college adventures of “Black-ish” characters Zoey Johnson (Yara Shahidi) and later Andre Johnson Jr. (Marcus Scribner). “Grown-ish” has become a tentpole series for Freeform, according to Simran Sethi, exec VP of programming and content at Freeform and ABC.

Comedian Sinbad shared his first social media post since suffering from a stroke in 2020.
Sinbad joined his A Different World cast on Zoom for a tour of historically black colleges and universities. The tour began at the Atlanta University Center.
In his video, Sinbad watched a clip from the event and began crying as he saw all of the college students watching him in an auditorium.
“Thank you for your prayers, support, and positive thoughts,” he captioned the post. “They’ve carried me this far and will see me through to the finish line. It really is a different world out here!”
“Expect to see more of me soon, and don’t freak out if you turn around and I’m standing right behind you,” he continued. “‘Sinbad I can’t believe you’re here!’ You can’t believe it? You better believe it. Miracles happen.”
